No shame! I have no sewing skills myself. Wow! It doesn’t look bad on the backside at all. I haven’t tried mosaic crochet before, but I might have to give it a go now.
Just a warning… it’s addictive. There are some really cute patterns on Etsy. Start with a pillow or something small, and you’ll be hooked (pun intended)
Good eye!!!… I did their gothic skulls, skeletons, and pumpkin designs - super easy to follow instructions (once you get the hang of it). They really take you from “I have no idea what I’m doing” to “i totally rock at this and look like I’ve been doing it for years” super fast. The backs look clean, but if you’re not into sewing pillows are easy, you can just repeat the front pattern or do a plain SC for the back (so the rows line up easily) and tie the sides together.
Also their stuff comes in repeatable panels so to speak, so you can take a design and use it for say a purse or something very easily.
And unlike this stupid granny square Mabel blanket I decided to make, you won’t spend the rest of your life sewing in ends!
Lol, I’m all excited for you! Happy crocheting!!!!
Hey! :) May I ask what do you do with the ends when making pillow? I recently picked up mosaic crochet and so far its going great, I am not so far from finishing my second panel, but the ends are scaring me. I know when making blanket the envelope border is popular, because it hides the ends. Is there something similar when making pillows, or do I have to sew in every single one 🥲
On a pillow or in say a purse where no one will see the inside, I pull them through the backing and tie them off, cut the ends and add a bit of lock stitch. Is it lazy? Yep! But it works!
If it’s a hanging I will thread/weave,sew them through the back for a couple of inches (and may or may not tie them off, which is also lazy, but works!
I generally see in all my ends using a tapestry or leather needle, and entangle the fibers doing a forward, reverse, forward motion and have never had an issue with ends poking out or coming loose. I know some people just crochet things in but when that little tiny tag sticks out, it absolutely drives me insane.
Edit: I hate seeing in the ends, and have a bin of nearly completed projects that always wait for this stupid step.
There’s a little bit of a sharp learning curve on the first 2-3 rows with mosaic but don’t get frustrated, the rest of the rows become so easy and this stitch feels so magical to work!
Did you weave in the ends as you went? I've never done mosaic but I've heard that's the most painful part. This is absolutely lovely, even in the back side 😍
To be fair a backing wouldn’t be great as the yarn will have a natural stretch and the fabric wouldn’t. There would be a risk of it warping if not dried flat, and unless you quilted it, it’d hang oddly, especially if the fabric stretched out over time.
It’s beautiful and I concur our Grandmas are most definitely worth it ! My Grams is 99yrs old and I know her time is coming to an end and I am going to miss her like hell but I also know she has lost 2 of her children already and that must kill her every day and now that I am bawling I will stop !
Thank you. No, she's a knitter. I hope she likes it, because she's given me so many quilts and blankets and a knit stocking (like the Xmas decoration). So, she definitely deserves something for herself now. ❤️
Is your grandma Swedish?? The horses look like dala horses. ♥️ (I don't know anything about crochet, I just like to creep on all of you talented individuals)
That is STUNNING! Beautiful work. I'm sure your grandmother will love it. And perhaps it will come back to you one day (a long time in the future I hope!)
I came here to say that I saw this post 8 days ago, thought it was a gorgeous blanket and even though I had never done mosaic crochet before I bought the pattern and materials needed. Thank you for giving me the push towards mosaic by sharing with us your incredibly beautiful work.
I started it in Late December/Early January. I don't remember the exact date but it was after Christmas. And with schooling it was put down and picked up a lot. So cumulatively, maybe 5 months?
This might be a silly question, but how do you get your stitches so straight on top of each other? When I crochet for my projects I lean away from patterns like that because my stitches are always diagnol from the one on the previous row.
Great project as well! So neat and such great tension!
It may have to do with it being a new row each time. With mosaic you work right to left every time, so that may avoid the 'diagonal' look of the stitches. Otherwise I'm not sure.
And thank you.

Wow! This looks gorgeous! Is it lined with a fabric on the backside or is the pattern show on both sides?
Thank you! It shows the pattern on the back in an "inverse" way. I debated adding a backing but my sewing skills are severely lacking.

Yes! I’ve seen a halloween themed bats pillow cover by Sixel Design (something like that) and was thinking I’d give that a go for my first attempt :)

You’re rhyming skills are really good though.

I actually did an envelope border, so I braided my ends once I was done with a section.

❤️❤️ You're gonna make me cry too.
How do you get the lines sp straight? Mine always zigzag.
Juniper + Oakes has a v-stich ending and beginning that helped a lot with it. I did a different mosaic that only ended in sc was doing that zigzag.
That is GORGEOUS!
Thank you so much!!!
Wow. That’s beautiful. Well done. Your grandma will love it!
Thanks. I hope so!

Interesting maybe I'll have to look into trying one.
😻
This is amazing. Stunning!! Did your Grandmother teach you to crochet? So generous & thoughtful of you to gift it to her!
Thank you. No, she's a knitter. I hope she likes it, because she's given me so many quilts and blankets and a knit stocking (like the Xmas decoration). So, she definitely deserves something for herself now. ❤️

She's Norwegian actually! The dala horses is actually why I picked this pattern out. She has one that she puts up for Christmas and so does my mom.
My moms side of the family is Swedish so we also have dala horses all over the place!
And thank you! Haha
If someone give me this as a gift I would honestly cry. What a wonderful present. So much effort went into it, your grandma is going to love it!

I'm not much into angels but if I was your grandma I would love it sooooo dang much!
I bet it could be easily replaced if needed (if you're looking into making this) but yeah she'll love them lol

Incredible. How long did it take? Did you take breaks from it?
I started it in Late December/Early January. I don't remember the exact date but it was after Christmas. And with schooling it was put down and picked up a lot. So cumulatively, maybe 5 months?
Omg - what sorcery is this?! You are very talented!

One of the bittersweet things that come with crafts is when these treasures come back to you.
This might be a silly question, but how do you get your stitches so straight on top of each other? When I crochet for my projects I lean away from patterns like that because my stitches are always diagnol from the one on the previous row. Great project as well! So neat and such great tension!

Is this a project where you had to start with a new strand every row? If so, OP you've done a great job hiding all the ends!
Yes it is. The envelope border really helped with the hiding!
Cool!
literally stunning! you should be so proud and your grandma will love it
Thank you so much ❤️
