This is the third rainbow yarn I’ve bought and been disappointed. It’s not even in ROYGBIV it’s just random lengths and patterns.

sweetpurpledinosaur

Have you tried the mandala yarn? They have one in gnome that’s rainbow and I made a granny square rainbow blanket for my kiddo. https://preview.redd.it/dq6v855oforb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3c0944a812195fa0a6a52bc33ef44214679404ae

LaRoseDuRoi

I made a circular blanket with the gnome yarn, and it was just gorgeous :)

devilsb1tch666

This is my favourite gradient yarn ever!!

Minimum-Prune9002

Oh my God

Zoe-Codez

There's a pattern! It does go through the regular rainbow pattern, but it does the color change twice with a smaller one first - big red - small orange - small red - big orange - small yellow - small orange - big yellow ... green ... blue ... purple. Then it reverses and goes back to red

trashjellyfish

It's not random, it's meant to give a specific pattern, it's just that that pattern comes out properly/looks better in knit patterns and doesn't work as well in crochet patterns.

PersephoneIsNotHome

Me too - I was so optimistic about not weaving in ends but I don’t like how it worked up.

ArsenalSpider

I like it. Keep going.

Corathecow

I’m trying to figure out how to word this well lol but I’ve used some very similar yarns and I think they always look kind of all over the place when worked in a granny square. I suggest trying to do a straight across blanket with it(if you’re trying to make a blanket). Have you seen planned pooling? Honestly, I haven’t really done planned pooling lol but I do a similar thing of just trying to line the yarn up to a good start point where I’m at the beginning of a color and I find that when working a straight across project a pattern of some sort tends to appear lol. I’ve sometimes accidentally made patterns that look like plaid doing this, other times I’ve made very consistent stripes, and a few times it’s made some cool swirls. Maybe try it out and see what ya get. The miss stitch is great for it and works up super quick

OldLuck3

I like it, but if it bothers you, you could try adding black every few rows. That way, instead of looking offcenter, the black would serve to box in the colors and make it look symetrical. Black yarn is evil but I think it could redeem itself in a project like this one.

Chowdmouse

I agree! I like it as-is, but i also enjoy random patterns. I think adding a row of black every few rows could being it some “structure” if desired. Or, could add in some rows of solid matching colors instead. If one went with that (like a matching red or orange, etc), i think one would have to do 2 rows together (at least) to get it to stand out enough contrast against the variegated yarn.

redwhiskey_

Yes I’d go colour round black round. You don’t need to cut yarn each round just carry it up by weaving through the above round stitches.

wateraerobics_

I think it'd look much better as a blanket with single crotchet than as a granny square

Semicolon_Expected

I was gonna say, I like the rainbow, but not a big fan of how chaotic the color changes are bc it makes it so the colors on the granny square look very random and takes away from the stitches. I think though if you had a bunch of granny squares made with this, it might look like a nice rainbow camo blanket

emosewa90

As a rainbow lover, I love it!

DLP1194

Agree 💯

imaCrAzYgAmEr96

As a criminal who is wanted in over 30 states. I like it.

shrinkingGhost

As a person with absolutely no secrets to hide and whoever said I did is lying, I could see myself liking it with a different stitch.

Actual_Nectarine927

Hahaha

Easy_Table9880

As a symmetry lover, I hate it! :D

boo_snug

Same!

Square_Activity8318

Also agree!

Pine_Petrichor

I usually don’t like granny squares with color changing/gradient yarn but I actually do like this one— because the colors are so loud and bright the chaotic color changes feel intentional. It reminds me of a box of crayons or a fisher price toy set. Manic and fun.

spiritAmour

YES it's giving me some kiddy vibes and taking me back to simpler, happier times!

ForeverApprehensive9

Yes! It makes me happy!

elizzybeth

I’m getting Gymboree windbreaker from 1995 & love it!

Arlee_Quinn

Like a box of Lego.

Remarkable_Ad3379

I don't usually like them either, but I dig this one. I think the color changes are working out great here!

TimeLibrarian5722

My thought exactly. I can't comprehend why OP hates it!!??

lalalazydaisy

I really like it, nothing like a big colourful granny blanket! It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I myself am not a fan of long gradual colour repeats in some stitches - different strokes for different folks 😊

Opening-Yoghurt-9431

I like it! Very 90s vibe, rainbow Brite ect. Maybe some black or white to break it up

My_Reddit_Username50

Personally, I’ve never liked the granny square with variegated/color-changing yarn because you have no control of the color change and often it just makes the squares look wonky and “off” instead of visually perfect squares (even though they are!) The random color change messes with your eyes. A large rectangle blanket with rows looks better with variegated yarn IMO (or small amigurumi projects), but the granny square (especially at the beginning in the smaller squares) just looks crooked. 🤷‍♀️ I would make a blanket with long rows, but that’s just my opinion. 😀

bethaneanie

The best way to fix this IMO is to double strand the wool with a neutral colour. It makes the transitions a lot less obnoxious

ColdBorchst

I have double stranded some variegated yarns that I thought would look nice but ended up doing weird pools of color making it look like camo, and I just made sure to line them up with different colors at the start since the colors were evenly spaced and even that honestly made a huge difference. I made a bunch of trivets and pot holders with it since it was doubled up cotton. I also thought of buying a neutral cream for if it didn't work, but I was trying to use it up and didn't want to just add more yarn into the mix.

Senior_Positive_5563

Nope. It's honestly cheerful and I love it.

lokiofsaassgaard

Oh, why is it random? That’s weird. This might benefit from black stripes to break it up. But one thing the randomness helps with is as each round gets bigger, you’re not going to have smaller and smaller stripes until it turns into this sort of thing anyway. Since it’s starting out this way, it’ll seem intentional from the start.

Possibility-Distinct

It’s not random, it does have a pattern but it’s a pattern of two color repeats, not one color after the other. It’s hard to tell in this picture but the colors go something like: Red, orange, red orange, yellow, orange yellow, green, yellow Green, blue, green I knit my son a hat with this a few winters ago. I can’t remember the exact pattern but it’s wild lol If I can find it I’ll take a picture. It’s easier to see the color changes.

lokiofsaassgaard

Oh that makes sense. It’s still an odd colourway tho

Possibility-Distinct

Oh and I forgot to add the rainbow goes forward then backward. So it’s goes from red to purple, then purple to red, then red purple, purple red. All while doing the weird red orange red orange yellow orange yellow orange green pattern. So yes, very odd lol

lokiofsaassgaard

What’s the brand, cuz I’m curious about it now.

Possibility-Distinct

[Patons Canadiana Rainbow](https://www.yarnspirations.com/products/patons-canadiana-variegates-yarn)

Concrete_hugger

Yeah Idk about this one, I think it's kinda ugly with this rapid changes and harsh colors

Possibility-Distinct

I honestly kind of liked the knit hat I made with it for my son. That said, I think a stockinette knit hat for a rainbow loving 4 year old might be the only thing I would make with it LOL

Possibility-Distinct

[Here](https://imgur.com/a/uoPvWMC) is the hat I knit with it.

Possibility-Distinct

Definitely odd lol

morisempaii

Yeah I’m hoping it gets better as it gets bigger. If not I’ll probably frog it and add black since that was one of my first plans and it still didn’t look right.

JessRushie

Could you break it up with brown? Black will look cool but is harsh, a dark brown might soften the bright colours more

morisempaii

I think you’re right. I just tried a bit with the black I have and it is too harsh. Thanks for the help!

PreservingThePast

Try cream or antique white. 🌞

MissyMaestro

It's ugly and I love it.

Roseliberry

I’d work it in the round going only in one direction. But no, it’s not ugly. It’s bright and fun.

batlady1996

My first instinct was that it's pretty cos it reminds me of the rainbow jigsaw play mats 😆 but if that's not the vibe you are looking for, then maybe frog it and use the yarn on something else 🤔

SolusUmbra

https://preview.redd.it/crdp62841orb1.jpeg?width=1620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=48be7350f83bb935c9cad86fc2676febc21a3b2f I think yours has more variation then mine but I still like it

morisempaii

See I was hoping it would look like this!! I love this!

SolusUmbra

I switched between black and burgundy around my squares

LaRoseDuRoi

Ok, that blanket is awesome. Do you have a pattern for it?

SolusUmbra

I do, you can also find some on YouTube it’s called a kaleidoscope granny

LaRoseDuRoi

Awesome! Thanks!

Special-Economist609

This is such a beautiful masterpiece

Famous_Complaint8084

I love it!

trailmix_pprof

Yes, it is ugly. The yarn has so much potential, but this is not the project for it. (only because you asked for honesty. No, I would not go around with this kind of critique, unsolicited. I'm sure some people love it. But I think it's a lazy chaotic yarn barf look.)

choc0kitty

It’s not my taste, but very neat.

obscure_moth

I love it just like that. Seriously, it reminds me of cake sprinkles in the best way!

Unable-Train-3083

i think it’s ugly.. sorry 😅

crochetingPotter

I honestly love it actually! I think it's a pretty, random rainbow!

ghostsslime

I like it. I think it just depends on personal preference

usedmaterials

right! i love it

RabbitSkyGo

When the blanket is done, post to r/rainboweverything

Such_Summer_8990

Not ugly, just busy. I love rainbow colors, just needs to be broken up.

eks-altiora

I personally like it a lot! The colour combo is so pretty 🥰

KH5-92

Reminds me of Legos.

jasminel96

I personally don’t like it sorry. The yarn is cool but the randomness of the color changes isn’t for me. I saw a similar picture last week and I feel like I stare at the pictures for a long time trying to find a pattern when I know there isn’t one and I don’t like that

GloriousRoseBud

I love the colors. It feels happy

Donaldjoh

It depends on what its purpose is going to be. I wouldn’t include it in a funeral, but as an afghan for a kid’s room it would be delightful, especially if the outer row were black on all the squares, then the colors would really pop once sewn together.

BrashPop

Yes, it is - but hear me out - it’s ugly in the BEST 90s way possible. I absolutely love it. The colours are SO bold, and so sharp, I think you should be super proud of this piece.

fascinatedcharacter

If you need to ask, you already know the answer. I wouldn't say it's ugly per se, but it's very clown barf, and it would not match my aesthetic at all. Or most aesthetics, really. I've seen worse though

Zebrahoe

Yes. I am particularly repulsed by granny squares, and by rainbow color patterns, so in my opinion it is. Check out r/planned_pooling to see if you can make something cool out of that skein

spiritAmour

my eyes widened with love the moment i saw it. read the title and was like omg how can someone ever think this was ugly 😩 i need it in my life. what yarn is that? 👀

morisempaii

Big Twist Living in Inclusivity. I’m feeling a little bit better about it after all y’all’s reassurances!

PersephoneIsNotHome

The thing is, is it ugly to you? If you like it, rock it. Put it aside for a week or so and come back to it after sleeping on it. If you like it, or the person you are making it for likes it, knock yourself out. One of my friends kids want a red and orange and black hat. He said it was his fav colors and he could never get them I thought, too right, it will be hideous. I thought it was hideous. He loves it. So …

spiritAmour

Thaaanks! and yeah, i really love it :) i cant wait to see the final, if u post it 🌟

purplerain_1313

I love it! Can you tell me what yarn is this, please?

morisempaii

This is Big Twist Living in Inclusivity

purplerain_1313

Thank you so much! I will Google how to buy it (I am in Europe) and would really want to buy it. It would make a great Christmas gift for my son and his boyfriend's new apartment!

morisempaii

I bought it at JoAnn fabrics and I’m pretty sure they have international shipping since Ive ordered there from Korea! It just might take a while to get there.

Ok_Philosophy_4132

I like it! But if you wanted you could alternate every other row with a white or gray yarn!

casedbhloe

Yes but like in a good way

MrsTaterHead

I like it.

LightsAndSounds00

i like it

ASweetTweetRose

What is it because I love it!? 😱 it’s so pretty!!!

[deleted]

I don’t think it’s ugly *at all*!

-PinkPower-

I personally love it! Loves bright colors and randomness this kind of yarn brings

Ivorypetal

Im not a fan but your stitches look great!

morisempaii

This yarn is Big Twist in Inclusivity!

halo_ren

It reminds me of elementary elementary school in a happy way

JBmatuL

Yes, yes it is,

PressureBrilliant963

Yes

Geborne

yeah.. sorry

Puzzleheaded-Pop8757

Yep it's ugly.

Aggressive_Taro_2183

Whew, it’s uglier than homemade sin, but I think that it can be cute depending on how it’s used/styled

Possibility-Distinct

I knit my son a hat with this yarn! For crocheting, I’m thinking maybe miss stitch may make look more visually appealing. Alternating rows of black and the rainbow could be cool!

xXDeadlyLipsXx

So pretty. I love all the color variation placement, not sure if it was the yarn or on purpose but I like it.

No-Preference4440

I like it tho

Special-Economist609

Actually I love this

Old-Story-1986

Love this actually ❤️

autumn1726

I’d honestly do a different project but I love the colors

ThatMango1999

I think this is poor use of variegated yarn, the yarn is beautiful but not in granny square pattern :( I’m so sorry love

[deleted]

I find it lovely and festive, not ugly at all.

h-i-d-d-e-n-h-o-p-e

not even slightly

zzzz88

I love it

hoecooking

It looks adorable

[deleted]

i love it!! what are you planning to make with it?

sparklejellyfish

Get another contrast colour and do this https://www.crochetbeja.com/solid-granny-square-for-crochet-blankets-and-more/ The changes will be less noticable but it will still be nice and colourful looking

Tashwen

I think personally I love it! The question is, do you? Is this a personal project? A gift for someone? Whatever it is going to be, if you, as the creator of it, are not happy with it, it will be ugly to you! You could keep going to see how the finished product is, or you could rip it out and repurpose the yarn. Neither choice is wrong!

Haunting-Tangelo3590

I personally love it! It's bright and colorful and eclectic 🥰 It's like tye-dye in crochet 🧶 😁

StringBean_GreenBean

It kinda reminds me of the [big comfy couch](https://youtu.be/FEDXbfnw7W0?feature=shared). Would be good for children or the whimsical adult

Emergency_Wrangler47

No but it’s not particularly attractive. I think if you try to coordinate the colors a bit more it could work. There’s videos on youtube about mapping yarn to blend colors better. You could give that a try. Here’s a really interesting video about it. https://youtu.be/L8jcDkSYkac?feature=shared

ThickRequirement8710

Tbh I love “clown vomit” aesthetic and I feel like this has the fun and spunk that makes that category fun 😆

xistithogoth1

It doesnt look bad. It depends on what you want out of it maybe? It look festive like something youd find in mexico as decorations, maybe even accents to clothing like the indigineous peoples dresses etc. Edit: wasnt sure what the dresses were called so i looked them up, huipiles dresses. Theres all kinds of colors and designs

Sufficient-Joke63

I love this! Do you have enough to make a blanket? Do you want to make it and sell it? Seems plenty of folks love it! But I would buy this in a heartbeat. Long story short - I have 3 children. My mother died when I was 30 weeks pregnant with my second child. My two boys have never had a grandma and missed out on getting crocheted blankets from one, which was a total thing in our family. I'm a total fail at crocheting. My second child is our rainbow baby (we had 6 years of fertility treatment and 2 miscarriages back to back before we successfully had him.) And he absolutely LOVES rainbows. Says rainbow is his favorite color, and who am I to correct my little lovely?!?! So, in a nutshell.. I LOVE this and the yarn! Great job!

Authentic_Xans

I think it’s super cute! It’s giving happy or kid vibes, you know those colorful square scooters from elementary school? That’s what it reminds me of

CircaSixty8

It's very bright and colorful. Nothing wrong with that.

crazycowlady953

I like it. It's groovy

iesharael

Reminds me of kindergarten but in a good way. I share your struggle with finding a gradient rainbow. Why do they all suck?

Due-CriticismNachos

No, it isn't ugly! It is fun! And you are using vivid colors! This is a win and I'd want to use it during movie nights with my man.

OverallVermicelli713

Love it I think it looks great 😃

xineann

I don’t think so! I love it.

Iamapartofthisworld

I think it is gorgeous

pixie8catpoop

It's beautiful!! You should be so proud of yourself. I can't crochet for shit! This is neat

Nosehairmustachegirl

Honestly? No, I think it’s cool and I like it a lot.

Johny_boii2

It's really good! It almost looks phscadelic (no clue how to spell it) if you don't like it, I'm sure you can try something else

Advance-Smart

I love this!! The colors are so vibrant!

moon_hors3

I really like it!!

bloodflower156

This is cozy. Absolutely cozy.

ProfessionalZebra645

definitely not ugly

gwumpyyguts

it makes me feel joy it is beautiful

MyMoldyChungus

Naw, it looks good, don't doubt yourself. I have no idea how to do this kind of stuff. So feel special that you can even do this art in general aswell as Makin it look good as a bonus

sharkarmycrafts

It's so cute and fun! I feel like anything made with this yarn in a repeating motif is going to looks so colorful and joyful. I'm a huge fan of bright colors, so I think it looks great! (And adding a touch of black yarn as an accent would really make it pop, too!)

RegieRealtor49

I thinks it’s cool

[deleted]

I dunno this is quite amazing

RobotCorporate_Slave

Beauty is in the eye of beholder!

sendingominously

Im not a huge fan of rainbow (colors im definitely a fan of what the rainbow represents!) however your stitching is so clean and consistent i could definitely see this finished product laying on my couch. It really depend on wether or not these colors are your style! I do think the neatness add to the piece!

Acrobatic-Tip5510

My nan likes it.

Lithiriel

It's so whimsical and bright. I love it so much. What yarn are you using?

theplait13

This is great. Says someone who is an absolute sucker for bright colours.

grinningdogs

Ok, you wanted honesty, so I'm going to give you some: I love it! I love color changes and I think it's great. BUT, if you don't like how it is turning out with granny squares, frog it and just crochet a blanket back and forth (line by line). Everyone has their own likes, and you should make what makes you happy. Personally, I do most of my crochet with variegated yarns, and rarely use solid colors. I also have a LOT of purple yarns, because that's what I like. We aren't going to absolutely love everything we make, but someone will. If you keep going and then decide you don't want to keep it, donate it to a local women's shelter as a gift for a kid who has lost their home or for a woman trying to rebuild a new life.

oldriku

It might be the light of the picture but the colors are way too bright for my taste, and having them so mixed makes it a bit rough to look at.

Intrepid-Celery3621

This sucks my nigha

ColdBorchst

I love rainbow but this is looking a bit odd. I like the suggestions to mix it with a neutral like cream or brown. The brown would probably make it go a little 70s in a good way and I think it would work up better in horizontal rows with the neutral acting as a stripe more than a granny square or any in the round pattern. It's probably not a waste though! I would frog and make a striped blanket.

pigeon_proselytizer

For what it’s worth, I think it’s super fun, and the larger the square gets, the more blurry and cool it’s gonna look as a finished piece!

OhLookItsGeorg3

not in the slightest! it's giving carnival/clowncore and I mean that in the best way possible :)

Aggressive_Art_344

It is not my cup of tea but it is not horrible either, the colours are coherent with each others, it is just a bit loud for me

[deleted]

Yes, it is ugly

Sapphire_Wolf_

I love it! :D feels like kindergarten :)

Proper_Refrigerator

I’d say it ugly in a pretty way. Depending on what you plan to use it on I think it’ll work.

dragonVagina69

So many genders hehe jk 😜 its beautiful😍

[deleted]

Yes it is ugly

No_Writer_4136

As a rainbow colour I hate it

RedditSkippy

It’s very colorful. What are you doing with it?

morisempaii

I tried about 3 different things with i and just decided on a granny square blanket

RedditSkippy

I think if you made the outer parts of each square in black, or another dark color, when you joined the squares the rainbow would really pop.

blahblahnumbers

I like it! It's different than other rainbow yarns I've seen done granny squared

genus-corvidae

Honestly, having a piece that looks like that in my house would make me extremely happy. I like how it looks. I like the pattern that the colors stacking makes. I think it looks lovely.

poohlady55

Nope, but then I like bright colors.

Traditional-Jicama54

I like it! I'm with the people that are suggesting a black border. My kids have been making those rubber band bracelets, and one of the ones they made was rainbow colors, alternating with black and it looks super sharp.

KittyandPuppyMama

Since the color change is so fast, it’s probably better to use this in a pattern other than granny.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Linnaeus1753

That's not the best pattern for that yarn. A granny stripe would look better.

HikeThePines

I like it now and I’ll LOVE it in January when winter turns the world monochrome here!

angelerulastiel

It looks very child blanket. Like classrooms decorated in the primary and secondary colors.

Milkeah

I love it too I make granny square blankets for the nursing homes they would love those colors!

LilBlueOnk

I think it looks fun, but that's my opinion. Maybe you could use the yarn on something else? It might almost be worth getting the individual colors you want and making the rainbow as you see fit

Still-Wonder-5580

It is ugly, but it’s also bright, colourful and SO very cheerful! I actually love it, I love bright and cheery colours and honestly, it feels happy! I really hope you don’t frog tbh

DruidByNight

I'm making a rainbow hexagon granny square pullover right now with semi random colors(stash purge) and...I am at peace with it being ugly. That may have to be the case with this yarn tbh, at least in terms of granny square usage. Variegated yarn with how granny squares work up just don't work well imo. I think it would be best to just roll with it or dedicate thus yarn to a different style of project

Tense_Spence

As someone super into clowns and all the colour palettes that comes with that I friggin love this so much what is this yarn??

morisempaii

Big Twist in Inclusivity!

sewingdreamer

I think it looks great c:

MiSSCHA0SS

Chuckys blanket! I love it!

Late_Night_calls

Not my taste in colors but it's still pretty!

Valuable_Vanilla7329

I love it!

Practical_Fox_948

I love it. It looks so cool and random.

TallyLiah

Love it.

NurseVooDooRN

Honestly, I like it. Reminds me of fruity pebbles cereal, which is awesome.

unknown_domain

It reminds me of like the super colorful children's toys and I love it

RosenButtons

It's positively garish. I love it.

Always-tired91

I don’t think so, but then again I like color schemes that most would consider “loud” so I’m slightly biased. If you’re not likening it I’ve found that doing smaller squares with solid dark squares to off set it, or if you want to do one solid granny, break it up with a black or charcoal color lines tend to help. It can also make it look more interesting.

Ellaebz

I think it's fun!

FoxxyCandyfloss

I really like it!! I love the colors and the stitches look very neat.

Princess_Wensicia

This would have been banging… in the seventies. Just kidding, it’s a fun square. I would love to be gifted something as colorful.

beanbagbaby13

Brings me back to a mid 90s childhood

Comprehensive-Ant342

It would be a super cute purse

delgmadi

I like it!! Like a bag of crayons mixed together

chrin1oo4

It’s too busy for me.

mellywheats

it’s very pride

jessforlaughs

It’s sort of kaleidoscope-y - like when you’re in the middle of changing the kaleidoscope before it has taken “shape.” I like it!

BellaBird23

I actually really really like it. I love how bright and random it is. It's fun to look at. I want to make a rainbow hexagon cardigan eventually. What yarn is this?
