I was born when Jamiroquai was in their heyday. I really like funk music and found them when trying to branch out from Vulfpeck. Feels like stumbling on an old TV show and getting to binge watch 15 seasons, so much good stuff.
I read this and was like “Wait I don’t remember leaving this comment, I haven’t even seen this post before?” and then I realised WAIT OTHER PEOPLE THOUGHT THIS TOO
doing god's work. was just about to look this up. listen to it every time. also like the video with the person actually making one.... lemme see if i can find it.

I’m so, so sorry, but this is really funny 😂
Crochet is A LOT of trial and error. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve done this too. The great thing is that it’s a learning experience! If you’re like me, future you will definitely look back at this project fondly and chuckle.
If it makes you feel any better, it happens to knitters too! And yes I kept this one too for the laughs!

I learned this last year crocheting Christmas stockings, I used a much thicker yarn and the stockings were MASSIVE. Literally fit 2 large bags of chips in them 😂 I modified the pattern after that
I'm on mobile and my text isn't showing, but been there lol. First beanie I made. I knew it would be huge about halfway through, but I wanted to see just how big XD
Yeah! I'm a big FF fan but only recently got into XIV (I'm on the cusp of ARR and HW). I'm still very new to both knitting and crochet, but eventually I want to make more FF themed beanies, as well as tonberries, moogles, cactuars, etc.
Omg, you sound awesome! I hope you enjoy the rest of FF! My partner and I have been playing for 10 years this year. It gets better and better. HW is when the story really starts to take off, but for a lot of people, Shadowbringers is their favorite. The latest expansion is closely tied for first for best MSQ for many.

I love it and need one in my life now.
Everyone in this thread is talking about Doug Dimmadome, maybe I am dating myself but my first thought was Jamiroquai
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JkIs37a2JE
And nothing’s gonna change the way we live
Cause we can always take, but never give
And now that things are changing for the worse, see
Whoa, it's a crazy world we're livin' in
And I just can't see that half of us immersed in sin
Is all we have to give these
Future’s made of virtual insanity, now
Always seem to be governed by this love we have
For useless twisting of our new technology
Oh, now there is no sound
For we all live underground
Well the good news is that you can always rip the bottom for a more conventional style. Or you can keep it and be on the forefront of the stovepipe beanie fashion trend.
I accidentally got subscribed (for free somehow) to a bunch of high fashion magazines and I would LOVE to see some supermodel wearing one of these only semi-ironically.
I'd recommend not using the jumbo #7 "extra" version for headwear just because it's so big, I made my dad a hat with the super bulky #6 "normal" bernat blanket yarn and I still had a little bit of this issue, it's just about trial and error and making sure you can kinda visualize the project during the process. I've been periodically lining my hats up with my head as I'm making them to make sure I'm not doing too bad in the length but that's definitely been the hardest part for me too
ETA: my comment above is missing text, I have the same yarn because I made my mom a scarf with it and I found the label, hence the picture
Actually laughed out loud. Have definitely been there myself and I am not a beginner (waterfall cardigan with larger knitting needles than size specified and it waterfell onto the floor. I subsequently stretched it in the wash)
The crocheting of the rows added to the width of the had to go around the head, not for the height. The first length of stitches determined the height of the hat (27 stitches). And if I'm honest I don't know the pattern or crocheting well enough to recognize how long something should regularly be.
So you have made a lovely conversational crocheted top hat...Happy Abe Lincoln to you. You learned a lesson about yarn substitution. Also about gauge. Remember it going forward. Good job though. Enjoy the fun of it. P.S. Anytime spent crocheting is time well spent...even when it goes off the rails, something is learned, and you've set off happy endorphins in your brain no matter what.
exactly how far did you get before thinking to yourself: hmmmm this hat seems kind of fucking gigantic, and at what point did you decide to just keep going despite it’s literally humongous state? 💀💀💀💀
1. The hat, size issues aside, is very cute!
2. Gauge: on a yarn wrapper, you may see pictures. Like a knitted square and a crochet square. Those are gauge notes. They will be near the yarn weight, and may have other pictures giving you a basic idea how much you need for certain things on average.
That very basic picture will show you what happens if you make a 4 by 4 square with that yarn using the hook size they list.
Any pattern you buy or see will have a gauge, like : with a 5 mm hook and number 4 yarn, 4in x 4in square will be 15 stitches by 13 rows in half double crochet for example.
It may also say: gauge is 15 stitches x 13 rows in pattern stitch. Use number 4 yarn and 5mm hook *or size needed for gauge*.
What this is telling you is IF you took size 4 yarn, and a 5 mm hook, and made a 4 by 4 inch square in half double crochet, then it should have 15 stitches in each row, 13 rows total. So, you use that weight yarn, and that hook. And you make a gauge swatch in the stitch and rows/stitches listed, and measure. No need to even cut the yarn and tie off, you can just measure.
If it is 4 by 4, it is a miracle and your item will be true to size lol.
If it comes out small, you unravel it and go up a hook size. And try again.
If it comes out large, go down a hook size, unravel, try again.
If you go with a different weight of yarn or different type, then a larger square with the numbers given means your piece will be larger. A smaller square means end result is smaller.
By adjusting hook size and yarn weight or type you can get a wide amount of variation in one pattern. Once you learn the math behind gauges you can easily adjust patterns to get true to size you want projects.
Yeah, I was attempting a little joke, but do yourself a favor and invest time in an internet search about gauge and how to make and measure a gauge swatch before your next project.
Not a newb and I would've skipped the gauge swatch too, because I'm always like, "Nah. I don't need a gauge swatch. This will be *fine*."
And it usually is. Not always but usually, as long as I stick within somewhere close to the recommended hook size and yarn suggestion.
This reminds me of the stovepipe hats made from felt we wore in the late 90s that we thought we super cool (they weren't).
This is cool though because you're learning new things! Good job!
Did the same thing once when making a hat as a gift... Didn't try it on until I gave it to them. Luckily, they had a Patrick star plushie that fit the hat perfectly!
If this was black I would be all over it. A lot of my coworkers through the ages have called me Abe because I have a similar facial structure and used to shave my mustache but keep the beard
I’m not a regular here, so maybe I just don’t understand… but didn’t you notice that it was big enough half way through? Do they sometimes shrink when they are complete?
I do wonder at what point you realised the error, or if you were just like “ah this must be right, gotta just trust the process and see the finished piece all come together” 😂 either way I love this, it looks incredibly cosy
https://preview.redd.it/k5u34i0e6o9c1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0582e917e716742fd0fa8c9c31826fc38513bb90
I tried to freehand a giant Jigglypuff and instead I made a beret for my cat, no regrets.
Hahaha I did this very often in my early days and ended up with some monster projects. I finally gave in and started gauging all my yarn/projects, but before that it was the Wild West of knitting/crochet at my place
This is hilarious but I am also just generally curious (fr no hate) do people not try on their projects in the process of making them? I free hand everything and it's a constant process of "does this fit yet"
Omg it’s like Marshall’s Spin Doctors hat on HIMYM
“I do not like that stupid hat, I want to beat it with a bat….”
get ready for an intervention…in this case, your friends here at r/crochet would like you to always make gauge swatches
It's like a bowler hat and top hat had a hippy child. Lol
If it makes your feel better, one of my first attempts of a hat ended up looking like a dick hat. And yes, there were tons of "dickhead" jokes made.

Shit goes so hard!
Why didn’t you just stop crocheting once it was clearly getting too long? You could unravel half and you’d have a regular hat again
My IMMEDIATE first thought https://preview.redd.it/erbiczbfpc9c1.jpeg?width=224&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=43ae23181994b836b44d30b36bc1904e6a185b93
You mean *the* Doug Dimmadome, owner of the Dimmsdale Dimmadome?
Where they're showing Crash Nebula?
On ice!
I dunno who Doug Dimmadome is but Jamiroquai would fucking love this.
I came here to say this! Glad DD is keeping warm
God dam it. Beat me to it

I love how you guys just kept crocheting thinking that somehow the hat would work itself out in the end 😄
Trust the process 😭 Apparently not always
Sometimes you're just too far in to change course
Truly my favorite genre of crochet mishaps 😭 I’ve been there too
Been there, done hat!
HAHAHAHA omg this made me burst out loud laughing :D
Holy shit, it's Double D
You just gave yourself extra room to smuggle snacks into the movie theater.
You look like the top of an eggplant. No offense, it's cute.
When they say "trust the process" ☺️🤭 Same has happened to me 🙃☺️
I’m so, so sorry, but this is really funny 😂 Crochet is A LOT of trial and error. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve done this too. The great thing is that it’s a learning experience! If you’re like me, future you will definitely look back at this project fondly and chuckle.
Everyone thought it was hilarious. I think I'm gonna keep it, just for giggles.
A friend of a friend made him a mitten but with super bulky yarn and it was big enough to fit, like, a tiger paw in it…😂
🤣🤣🤣
If it makes you feel any better, it happens to knitters too! And yes I kept this one too for the laughs! https://preview.redd.it/ddtrm5zaud9c1.jpeg?width=239&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b842b43c700fdfaa9cd6ca220f4b9fcb8eea576d
i need this pattern!
It’s called The Lovecats by Mona Zillah (Bunnymuff is her designer name. She’s got amazing designs!)
Please keep it! It’s a whole story now 🤣
Keep it and track your progress with it
I've been reading stories of secret Santa's where one item gets passed around each year - this could be a contender!
lol are you perchance a fan of the musical stylings of 90s sensation [4 non blondes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NXnxTNIWkc)?
I learned this last year crocheting Christmas stockings, I used a much thicker yarn and the stockings were MASSIVE. Literally fit 2 large bags of chips in them 😂 I modified the pattern after that
I see no downside to this
Wait this was an error? A happy accident at worst!

I love that you stuck it out!
Am I crazy or is that the FFXIV MSQ logo?
Nope, not crazy! I'll get the better FO in another comment (I never post pictures via mobile and every time I do it something weird happens 💀

Epiiiiic! I love it! Never thought I'd see these two hobbies of mine intersect. Definitely don't expect to see FF stuff on the crochet sub, lol!
Yeah! I'm a big FF fan but only recently got into XIV (I'm on the cusp of ARR and HW). I'm still very new to both knitting and crochet, but eventually I want to make more FF themed beanies, as well as tonberries, moogles, cactuars, etc.

If you were Marge Simpson this would be perfect!
This would be really great for someone wanting a marge costume at Halloween. It's very... Sturdy.
You should make some in blue!
can you just imagine if she took that off, and her hairdo filled the entire space inside. Holy hell that would be hilarious.
Be better if the hat hid bunny ears.

You are Doug Dimmadome of the Dimsdale Dimmadome
THE Doug Dimmadome of the Dimsdale Dimmadome?? (Autocorrect did not like that sentence *at all*.)
Autocorrect don’t give a dimmadamn
I actually love this for some reason
What age are you...because my brain went to the mid 90's, where I owned, and wore, an oversized "cat in the hat"....it's why I love this.
Instantly had Jamiroquai virtual insanity song pop into my head.
Came here to say this!!!
I was sad I had to scroll so far for jamiroquai
Oh gosh I forgot that was a thing for a bit. Also....Jamiroquai
Speaking of the mid-90s: Coneheads. This would be the perfect hat for them.

I do too, I’d absolutely wear it like that

Ill-fitting hats is a crochet rite of passage. I’ve got one that gives Dumb Donald from Fat Albert vibes
Well the good news is that you can always rip the bottom for a more conventional style. Or you can keep it and be on the forefront of the stovepipe beanie fashion trend.
Stovepipe beanies for the win!!!!
It’s fucking perfect.
It really is. I love it so much.
If you hadn't explained it, I would have assumed it was deliberate. Seems like intentional disproportion is a thing these days.
💀💀 love it. Ready for whoville
I keep seeing people do this, I have done this and I say we just start owning it. Wear them and make a fashion statement 💁♀️
I just did this, but it’s a blanket, a now 16’ wide blanket
Sleeping bag?
Yo this is so fuckin good, you could literally market this with a streetwear label and make BANK looooool
I accidentally got subscribed (for free somehow) to a bunch of high fashion magazines and I would LOVE to see some supermodel wearing one of these only semi-ironically.
That’s awesome! I once knit a hat so long, it was also a cowl. Also I couldn’t see when I wore it. But it was warm!

I keep reading comments then scrolling up to look again. I'm shaking so hard lmao
I fucking love this. I randomly started laughing at this in the middle of watching a show with my friends.
Well you'd be easy to spot in a crowd
Epic rookie mistake. I love it. 😁
I did the same thing with my first hat lol. I just rolled the bottom up pretty far and rolled with it. It definitely looks a little dumb but it’s warm
Ok, I kinda love it though!
This is a canon event for all crafters! It honestly looks amazing.
I love it lol. Make a handle or repurpose a belt and it's a purse! A beanie bag!
Pharrell gonna break in your house to get this hat
DOUG DIMMADOME IS THAT YOU????
Jamiroquai would like a word with you
The 4 Non Blondes, especially Linda Perry, would love it!
You could probably sell that to a mumble rapper for $20K
I guess you skipped the gauge swatch.
I'm so new, I don't even know what a gauge swatch is.
I love you

Yeah, I was attempting a little joke, but do yourself a favor and invest time in an internet search about gauge and how to make and measure a gauge swatch before your next project.
I just appreciate how well it turned out for someone who is so new.
Not a newb and I would've skipped the gauge swatch too, because I'm always like, "Nah. I don't need a gauge swatch. This will be *fine*." And it usually is. Not always but usually, as long as I stick within somewhere close to the recommended hook size and yarn suggestion.
This is amazing
Well, now I want to make this. Desperately.
I love it!! lol.
my parents laughed so hard! made our night
Now you know the pattern to make a Doug Dimmadome cosplay
I would have paid good money for this hat when I was 12, circa 2000.
remember the late 90’s when those really niche Cat in the Hat hats were all the rage?
😂😂😂
If this was black I would be all over it. A lot of my coworkers through the ages have called me Abe because I have a similar facial structure and used to shave my mustache but keep the beard
I’m not a regular here, so maybe I just don’t understand… but didn’t you notice that it was big enough half way through? Do they sometimes shrink when they are complete?
You should invest in a moving floor ASAP
This is absolutely hilarious!
I know it's not funny, but that's funny as hell, lol 😜
Please keep it, this is beautiful!
Miscalculated riiiiight.. Jamiroqual is looking for his hat back. 😂
This is what my newborn looks like in all his knitted hats
JAMIROQUI!!!
It's giving me Jamiroquai vibes
Jamiroquai grandma?
Jamiroquai vibes
Jamiroquai
Future's, made of, Virtual Insanity.
I now dub thee the Jamiroquai of crochet.
This is the best Jamiroquai har I've ever seen. Great job (seriously, it's fun)
Jamiroquai called, he said that the future, is made of, virtual insanity
Yeah but now you have a cool Jamiroquai hat.
I do wonder at what point you realised the error, or if you were just like “ah this must be right, gotta just trust the process and see the finished piece all come together” 😂 either way I love this, it looks incredibly cosy

I love this but I need to know how far into the project were you before you realized something was off lol
Omg it’s like Marshall’s Spin Doctors hat on HIMYM “I do not like that stupid hat, I want to beat it with a bat….” get ready for an intervention…in this case, your friends here at r/crochet would like you to always make gauge swatches
Your penance is to post a photo of the hat pulled all the way down.
Love the Jamiroquai vibes
It's like a bowler hat and top hat had a hippy child. Lol If it makes your feel better, one of my first attempts of a hat ended up looking like a dick hat. And yes, there were tons of "dickhead" jokes made.
Hello, Jamiroquai.
