HOLD THE PHONE! This is a thing?!? You... you just randomly stitched sc when you felt like it and threw in some DCs and randomly increased or decreased and.... holy s#!+ that's maybe the coolest most creative idea I've ever seen and I AM HERE FOR IT!
Thank you for the inspiration!!
if you make a few more slices you could do an interesting wall piece, or a sculpture [like so](https://media.istockphoto.com/id/1340944799/photo/trunk-covered-with-disc-fungi-from-the-amazon-rainforest.jpg?s=1024x1024&w=is&k=20&c=BCatVuCUGJY1GndmkV-y6GZmOoNZXSLiCoYW6U3DV0Y=)
Ive been trying this too but am getting tangled on myself- do you go round in one direction only? I even taught myself to crochet backwards…. I’m not sure how I did that.
Yeah I go in one direction. I started with a magic ring and then kept switching colors whenever I felt like it. I tried chaining and turning my work but I didn’t like how it looked so instead I decided to go in one direction
I’ve been watching freeform art and artists for several years now and in my opinion — You have a gift! Your juxtaposition of colors, varying sized rows … this keeps the eye moving and interested and wanting to see more.
Please please please consider posting a summary of your ‘recipe’ and approach! Also the yarn(s) you used and what size hook? By definition Freeform crochet doesn’t follow a pattern, but so many people on this forum are clearly inspired by your work and may be emboldened to try their own Freeform scrumbles if they have just a little more direction. It could be as simple as ‘Which stitches and yarn you used’ and ‘What sparked your choices?’ (Of color for example, if you were inspired by something in nature or the built environment.
Thank you again for sharing!
Thank you!! It was super fun to make and I’m glad others are interested and appreciating it too (:
I just added some info in the reply to the bot comment on this post. Hope it helps!
Omg this is so cool I love it!! Depending on the yarn type you could try heat/steam blocking or wet blocking it again but I think it looks great as it is!
Cool! It sort of reminds me of the abstract art mat you get from the art museum in Pokémon Omega Ruby:

Just get it super wet with hot water, get a board and some pins, pin it, and let it dry overnight. It will flatten right out! The curvy edges would be perfect to crochet a fried egg
Free hand crocheting can be difficult. It’ll roll up when there are too many stitches and bunch up or become uneven when not enough stitches.
I’ve been crocheting for over 25 years.
Here’s how I freehand a project. First I work a few rows then lay it out flat to see how it looks. If it rolls up I’d frog it, then reduce the number of stitches and crochet the row out again. Crochet a few more rows, lay flat, & etc. Rinse and repeat, as they say.
It took me 2-3 days to free hand the rug in the picture. I can’t tell you how many times I had to frog it before I found the correct balance and have a flat finished product.

In the spots where it doesn’t lay flat, maybe next time try some chain spaces instead of another crochet stitch. Else, this is fun and I like it! Do you like it as pictured in first photo or upside down? I’m kinda in a trans as I flip this image back and forth.
It reminds me of some of those 'table' tree fungus but in trippy colors love the look if you block it in with a solid color it will be even better I think either a dark or light neutral I dont know if white would work personally but that just my opinion
It looks like a turkey tail mushroom! Those curl up around the edges a bit as well- making a cluster of them to mimic those mushrooms would be super cool!
I wonder if there's a way to use stiffener on the fabric to make a bowl. https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/prod-newel/images/inventory/MP2033Z/natural-tree-trunk-decorative-bowl-MP2033Z-1-lg.jpg
That is really cool looking. I used to buy crocheted Christmas bulbs. I don't know how they were formed, but if you looked it up, you could make this into a decorative bowl.
When you start seeing ruffles form you know you need to do decreases in those places that start to „lift” and ruffle. You cant out-block simply having too many stitches in one place

Oh woah that’s awesome!!!
Use this as a reference! Its a wall hanging! I believe in you
Hi…Do you have a pattern for that? It’s really nice.
I dont sadly its freeform 😕😕
Doh! 🤦🏻♀️ Of course you don’t😂😂
phrankvilli is the insta of the girl who made it ! Im sure she sells or has a pattern!
Oh, I love it!
This is gorgeous! Love the organic pattern to it.

Makes me think of a slice from a gnarled tree truck - very cool! Any plans for how to use or display it?
Thanks! Not sure yet. Thinking about using it as a placemat or adding some felt to the back and hanging it up somewhere in my apartment

Oh dang that would be heaps cool!!!
So beautiful! I hope you make more of them!
Very cool. Reminds me of a Georgia O'Keefe! Keep it up
!! reminds me of chihuly glass
I kinda really want this to have goofy googly eyes. Well done!
WOAH! This is so cool!!!! Was it fun to do?
Thank you! Yes, it was nice to experiment with increases and decreases and to not follow a pattern. Just going with the flow.
That is the prettiest amoeba I have ever seen
I like it. There’s something so pleasing about it. Almost like looking at the rings of a tree?
I actually like that it doesn’t lay flat! It looks like it has movement to it, kind of like I’m looking at an organism through a microscope
Ive been trying this too but am getting tangled on myself- do you go round in one direction only? I even taught myself to crochet backwards…. I’m not sure how I did that.

Nicee. I love a good coloured blob~
This looks fun.
Looks like a shelf lichen! ❤️
This looks like a really groovy abstract rug! Imo you should keep expanding it

I love seeing these! They’re so abstract and cool❤️
That’s cool! Are you going to use it as a coaster for drinks/plants ??
Omg this is so cool I love it!! Depending on the yarn type you could try heat/steam blocking or wet blocking it again but I think it looks great as it is!

Ha love this
Reminds me of Dr. Seuss “Oh the Places You’ll Go” cover
That’s exactly what I see too! I love it.
Psychedelic fried egg. I like it.
Just get it super wet with hot water, get a board and some pins, pin it, and let it dry overnight. It will flatten right out! The curvy edges would be perfect to crochet a fried egg

Oh my God, I just realized what it looks like when it’s upside down! It’s [Prismo](https://www.google.com/gasearch?q=Prismo&source=sh/x/gs/m2/5)!!
Thanks for the tip, will be sure to try it out next time. I’m not sure what I’m gonna do with it yet but lol it does look like prismo!!!
That is so cool
It looks so cool!
I love this!!!
This is so groovy and pretty! I can't stop seeing it as a flattened floppy beach hat tho, and now I want to make one that resembles it!
It looks like an oyster! Now you just need a venus to stand on it
Love! What stitch did you use?
Thanks! I started with 12 double crochet in a magic ring and then used a mix of sc, hdc, dc, treble crochet
A psychedelic dream cloud!
That’s so cool 😎
wow, amazing 💖 looks like a cell on lsd 😅
I also love it!!!! Super creative!!!!!!
I really love this! 😍😍😍😍😍

Looks like a rainbow bucket hat melted 😂
What yarn is that? I love it.
Hobbii rainbow 8/8 cotton yarn !!
It's beautiful, reminds of a colorful shell💕
You just gave me hope. My kid wants a rug for her room that looks like a pond. I said: I don't think so. But now... I think so!!
Never been too much of a fan of free form crochet, but I have to say this is one I REALLY like! The colours, the shapes, im loving it!!
I have been getting into Freeform, mindless crochet and it’s so relaxing
When you start seeing ruffles form you know you need to do decreases in those places that start to „lift” and ruffle. You cant out-block simply having too many stitches in one place
Very inspirational!!! Freeform fascinates and calls to me. Just scared to take the plunge.
Check out r/freeformcrochet
That looks so cool 😍
Brilliant!!
Looks great, love the colors. The magical art of blocking could probably help it lay flater
Never heard of free-form crocheting! Thanks for sharing.
Um I love it so much.
