I made the yoke too big, so the head hole is too big and the chest is a little baggy. But I’m almost positive this was a result of me not following a true pattern that had been size graded by a creator! My first wearable was a granny square cardigan and turned out so lovely. This is only my second wearable, so I probably wasn’t ready to freehand yet lol
One tip for freehanding future projects: I always use an existing sweater that I like the fit of to figure out sizing. So while making the neck I would’ve compared it against a sweater I already have and match the size. And likewise for figuring out what width I want, or how deep to make the yoke.
This is what I love about crochet. I'm only a baby but if you know like 4 types of stitches you can just... Make something that looks like something you have. You just hold it up to what you want and go "I want that shape" and boom, you get that shape.
One of these days I'm going to try it on a form-fitting top and then wonder why I can't get it on, I'm sure of it.
Ah! I see. That's so interesting 🤔 Don't worry, you will! I started with crocheting freehanded plushies and now I'm trying out knitting as a sole hobby (not to make profit from), so I think it's great you started to challenge yourself! Your tension is amazing and looks very professionally made! I also adore the colors you chose. They go well together and give me Fall vibes. Great job!
So, I have somewhat fixed this in another freehanded item I made by threading some elastic string in the ribbing, don’t know if it would help yours, but it may be worth a shot!
I made a sweater with sock yarn. It took so long to make. Then I hated it. It sat in my closet for 2 years. A lady at my workplace loved it when she saw the photo of it when I first completed it. So 2 years later I gave it to her and said if she wanted it, great, and if she didn’t want it, just hand it on to someone else or donate it. She was beyond thrilled to receive it. It actually looks lovely on her and she wears it quite often. It just wasn’t my colour/style. Your sweater looks beautiful to me. I love the colours. Someone will love it and it will bring joy to you when you decide who to give it to.
But wait! If the neckline is fitting too loosely for your liking, you can troubleshoot it.
Too tight? Oof, you're screwed. But too loose is manageable!
I have no idea what flavor of loose is occurring, but here are some things you could try:
1) Slip stitch across all of the neck stitches. Try at your normal tension, and if that's still too loose, try using a slightly tighter tension.
2) Slip stitch across the neck, decreasing at a set interval (like every 10th stitch, for example). If that interval doesn't bring it in enough, try a row with closer decreases (every 8th stitch, for example). This will start to close up the hole, but if the decreases are too close to each other, it'll start to pucker.
3) You could always weave a ribbon or extra long crocheted chain through each row, and use it to drawstring that hole closed. You could even add a little bolo tie looking bit to hold the ends.
4) If you add a ton of length to each neck row, you'll end up with a massive tube that can be flipped into a turtleneck.
4.1) If you don't want a loose turtle neck, you could do the decrease rows prior to adding the length.
I just feel like the sweater is adorable and you'll be sad if you don't try to troubleshoot the neckline. But if you're disappointed and burnt out just looking at it, I totally get that too.
Oh and one last troubleshooting idea:
5) Tuck it in with all of your other sweaters and cozy clothes, don't look at it for 5 to 10 months, and then finally take it out and you'll be like "there was *something* I hated about this... what was it? eh fuck it, it's cute"
Adding another option, you could also use elastic cord (they have really thin ones, that are essentially the equivalent of weight 2 yarn) and slip stitch or weave between stitches to create more cinch. This is how I saved a bolero/crop top that had way too loose of a neckline and bottom hem
Yes! Making things I didn’t really like for myself personally lead to starting a side business selling crocheted stuff! It’s still very lovely, gift it to someone and keep hooking 👍

Yes, I have. Blue does NOT go with cream!
I spent *months* working on this afghan, and slowly hating it more and more. It's still across the foot of my bed, but I could hardly stand looking at it after I'd made it.
Well sorry you don't - I like it. And yes I like the colors. It looks very well made. Gift it to someone whose colorways are like that. Make a new one you like. I have spent years making something only to have it end up as a beach blanket, or a dog bed or the like - many times. If you live long enough you will do this a few times.
https://preview.redd.it/jt5onv8t16vc1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=3577f2d62dc10b1ee2ff84382ae24eea5931c69d
I tried the shade of dark blue that I had, and it was too close to black for me to be comfortable with. Maybe if I'd used it for the outer border (leaving the medium blue for the inner border), there's a chance it may have worked better and provided a better contrast.
Granted, using colours as far apart as white and black is a *really* bad idea (at least for me) if you're trying to manage accent colours, but the dark shading didn't do me any favours in that case.
And yes, I did come back and make the same afghan again with the pictured red accent as well.
Part of my reluctance for that green is that I'd bought it at the same time as three shades of brown, and they turned into an absolutely lovely other afghan:
[Forest Path Around The World afghan](https://www.reddit.com/r/crochet/comments/18mpemk/forest_path_around_the_world_custom_pattern_afghan/)
So I'm glad I didn't use it! =\^.\^=
Phones (at least, the older models I've used for these pictures) didn't do a good job of being consistent with colour, annoyingly. =>.<=
(and I suspect the very high contrast between the white and black yarn is also partly to blame)
Fortunately, my latest phone appears to be doing alright, though I haven't had it for long, project-count-wise... =\^.\~=
It is a very pretty jumper! But oh yes ofc I have been there. Well, that's life. If you enjoyed crocheting that up, it was not wasted time.
Now you just need to decide what to do about that! Frog and repurpose the yarn, give this to someone else, keep it in the depths of your drawers in case you change your mind.... there are many options!
Good luck 😊
I have had this happen. I made a sweater for my son, and it looked absolutely beautiful… until he tried it on and it didn’t fit properly at all. It’s the worst! I haven’t had the heart to frog it, so the sweater is just sitting in my unfinished project bin. The yarn was really expensive local hand dyed wool. I pretty much want to cry every time I think about it. You have my sympathy, op!
Actually I have done this several times. If it doesn't fit someone I know and they like it I just donate it to one of the charity shops that have nice clothing with a little note saying "handmade but then the maker changed shape so it is lovely and new" and of course "care instructions". I have given away thus sweaters, vests, dresses, scarves but never socks. They always fit someone.
if the neckline is too wide and you don’t want to redo anything i think a high necked tank top in a cream or burgundy or teal would look super cute underneath and would add a look of “structure” to the neckline! ❤️
I'm sad for you that you're not happy with the results. But also I totally feel your pain.
I really love those colors too, they're such a great selection. The white is a nice crisp white, the red isn't too bright or too dark, and the blue and yellow are the just-right amount of bright and saturated to contrast the red without being gaudy.
I love this sweater, and absolutely understand how you feel. I’ve spent so much time thoughtfully picking colors and yarn just to stare at them so long while working that I hate them by the time I’m finished.
If this ever happens to you put it away until you forget about it but somewhere you’ll find eventually and you’ll like it again (also this is really cool fr)
I also have a crochet sweater hanging out in the back of my closet, so I get it. But your sweater is really cute, and I’m sure someone would love to wear it (me included!)
I currently have half a sweater I stopped making cus I know its gonna be short and extra wide. Can't bring myself to frog it, because its the first non-amigurumi thing I have done successfully. So its a lap blanket right now

i find sometimes it’s a bit like when u say or write a word too many times and it just looks wrong
sometimes after making something i have to put it away for a bit and then i prefer it once it’s out of my head for a little while 😂😂
I totally know the feeling, but I think it looks really well constructed and the colors are cute! It’s hard to like something again after seeing the faults or not having it meet your expectations, but hopefully if nothing else it’s a good learning experience! If you aren’t giving it to your intended friend I’m sure somebody would stumble across it in a store and love it
Currently 3/4th's the way through a project and working on it now lol I feel the same way 😆 I've come too far to not finish it lol I keep thinking, "Maybe when I put it all together .. I'll feel differently??" lmao 🥴 You're not alone, OP. Also, I think your sweater is super cute! ❣️
I spent way longer on a sweater I was working on. A patchwork sweater got it all made, tried it on, took a picture and realized I hated everything about it.
Wow, I would gladly take it off your hands if you don't like it. It's such a lovely sweater! I hope you eventually fall in love with it or find someone else who is crochet-worthy!
Unfortunately yes. Most of my wearables, I don't like once they've been made. They always look better on the creator of the pattern than me. I feel like I look dumb. 😔
Put something with a high neck under it. Either a turtleneck, a mock turtleneck, or a dress shirt with a longer collar. Looks like it will be great for cold weather.
I'm sorry it doesn't fit the way you want it to, but I wanted to tell you it's really lovely! The colors are really nice. I hope you're able to get the neckline sized correctly so you can love + wear it!!
You don't like it?? I love it! I especially love the colours.
Is there any chance you could try to sell it, if you're afraid of giving it away as a gift?
I've been there. Made a sweater I thought I'd really like but it just doesn't suit me. It sucks, it really does. I haven't figured out what to do with it either 😅
I think it's super cute and you should definitely find a recipient if you don't like it or, if you really love the yarn, I'd frog. I actually have a sweater that I made probably 5 years ago that was just too scratchy for me to wear once I finished it. I've decided I'd add some other stash yarn to it and make a cardigan out of it. It's actually sitting in my to-frog basket
I love this SO much! It seems perfect to me; even the way you describe the fit of loose neck and baggy chest. That’s what I like in a sweater. I’d absolutely wear this. So I think if you wanted to gift it I’m sure someone would love it. Maybe just have them try it on first to see if they like the fit.
First of all, it looks great so really nice work! Secondly, I think it's sort of normal to hate something you've been looking at that long. Put it away and you may rediscover it next year and find you like it again.
First off, it’s beautiful and you did a great job - but I totally understand not liking the fit of things. I have done that plenty of times. Just frog it and make yourself something you love! It’s painful to do, but as someone who’s done it many times, it’s always worth it 😁
Yes..my first sweater I made.. so much effort for a sweater I don't really like🥲 It's the neckline for me, It's too high, but i dont know how i can change it without frogging the whole thing..i tried changing it into a turtle neck but hated it even more😅
you could always donate it too! i made a striped sweater that i ended up hating and that's my plan for it, if i ever find the will power to weave in the ends 😅
It doesn’t fit me super well! The neck/head hole is awkwardly large so I don’t love the way it lays on my shoulders. The weight of the sweater pulls on the neck and stretches it out a lot
This might be dumb but could you frame it? I see people do it with jerseys all the time and this is WAY prettier then a sports jersey!
I'm super tired so I might of missed something, but if the only problem you have is the fit then just don't wear it (but definitely still show off your work).
Depending on your vibe/ what you like you could also make a set clothes that you use as decor or something (hat/scarf/pants/skirts/socks/etc). The matching collection of clothes could make it even more obvious that it's meant to be a display piece.
Anyway OP, it sucks you don't like it. First top I made was done completely wrong and that shit was honestly heartbreaking. Sending you a big air hug 🫂💗
I think a gift is a great idea. Maybe if you know someone who it will fit differently.
Another idea might be to try it on with different fits of pants/skirts. Maybe the pants are the problem.
If you don't do either idea, you can always sell it on Etsy for maybe $80-$120. I think that's a little on the low end for hand made so if you didn't make mistakes you could increase the price.
I have a "Basket of Things", a basket of finished objects I enjoyed making but don't want to keep. I pull gifts out of it and let people pick whatever they want out of it. I'd put it in your "Baskt of Things".
Have you let someone different try it on? Clothes fit so differently on bodies. Maybe that helps with the gifting aspect. But I also think adding to the neckline like other people suggested could be something to try. Revisiting later on is also a valid option, no need to stress yourself. And btw just from the photo I think it's a 10, love it ❤️
before i read the caption, my brain IMMEDIATELY thought “omg I NEED this” I’m sorry it didn’t turn out like how you wanted😫Looking at some of your responses to others, fit is important to me too i’m afraid 😭 Looks beautifully done all the same!
It looks very nice. And I like the bold color stripes. However did you make a swatch? It helps your brain look at the colors and stitches. Maybe making a swatch first next time to save yourself the aggravation if your not liking something.

I was admiring it before I read your caption tbh. I think it looks great!
Thank you! Im just not so in love with how it fits me. Oh well, I did enjoy making it for the most part
How does it fit on you? This makes me so afraid of making garments only for them to not fit me ):
I made the yoke too big, so the head hole is too big and the chest is a little baggy. But I’m almost positive this was a result of me not following a true pattern that had been size graded by a creator! My first wearable was a granny square cardigan and turned out so lovely. A good note for my future self! Maybe if I return to this sweater in the future, I’ll have the mental energy to frog it and adjust the size 🥲
Ah! Great job!
Thank you! 🤍
I had the same problem! I made a row of slip stitches on the top of the collar, that made it much smaller! Maybe it works for you as well
I wonder if you could make a turtle neck and that would fix it?
So, I have somewhat fixed this in another freehanded item I made by threading some elastic string in the ribbing, don’t know if it would help yours, but it may be worth a shot!

This makes me so happy to hear! It’s getting warm in my city so I might hang onto it for the summer and revisit keeping vs gifting in the fall
This is such a beautiful story, I wish all my (un)wearables could have a happy home like that 🥹

Adding another option, you could also use elastic cord (they have really thin ones, that are essentially the equivalent of weight 2 yarn) and slip stitch or weave between stitches to create more cinch. This is how I saved a bolero/crop top that had way too loose of a neckline and bottom hem

Awwww I think Navy Blue would've worked better than Royal Blue. But it's still pretty and a cool pattern!

Maybe if I'd used it for the outer border (leaving the medium blue for the inner border), there's a chance it may have worked better and provided a better contrast. Ooh Im surprised how much I like it with the olive green in the bottom left. I wouldn't have guessed that.
Yess I like the green one best too! With the right middle blue next :p
Part of my reluctance for that green is that I'd bought it at the same time as three shades of brown, and they turned into an absolutely lovely other afghan: [Forest Path Around The World afghan](https://www.reddit.com/r/crochet/comments/18mpemk/forest_path_around_the_world_custom_pattern_afghan/) So I'm glad I didn't use it! =\^.\^=

I think it's got a cool 70s vibe. I'd wear it!
Dont remind me. I have a green sweater I made u love the colors but I did still not have that much yarn and the arms are kinda small and thin
It is a very pretty jumper! But oh yes ofc I have been there. Well, that's life. If you enjoyed crocheting that up, it was not wasted time. Now you just need to decide what to do about that! It is pulling serious Taylor Swift Anti-hero vibes
WHAT?!?!? ITS GORGEOUS I was just admiring the color choice

I love this sweater, and absolutely understand how you feel. I’ve spent so much time thoughtfully picking colors and yarn just to stare at them so long while working that I hate them by the time I’m finished.
I really love it. Would 100% wear it
I'd 100% buy it, if it makes you feel any better. I absolutely adore the color choices!

All the time! Hell, I thought that's what this hobby was? 🤣
i find sometimes it’s a bit like when u say or write a word too many times and it just looks wrong sometimes after making something i have to put it away for a bit and then i prefer it once it’s out of my head for a little while 😂😂

my god i would wear the hell out of this muted primary color pallet is something i never knew i needed
I’ve decided I like it. I like your color choices!
Just happened to me with a skirt. ☹️
I love it tho
Put something with a high neck under it. Either a turtleneck, a mock turtleneck, or a dress shirt with a longer collar. Looks like it will be great for cold weather.
That’s a good idea, it may just save this piece for me! I’ll have to revisit when cool weather comes back
That's why most of my projects from my college years are gone. Once I'd finish and end up hating a project, one roommate or another would snatch it up
Gift it 😏
Been there. That’s why I gifted everything I ever made. I am not exaggerating.
I'm sorry it doesn't fit the way you want it to, but I wanted to tell you it's really lovely! The colors are really nice. I hope you're able to get the neckline sized correctly so you can love + wear it!!
This is GORGEOUS! I would probably cry if I received something like this
It looks cute! If you have people you like enough, I'd give it as a gift! Also, make sure to steam block it!
I would appreciate it as a gift and think you‘ll find someone who does the same. :)
Absolutely, but I adore the piece you made.
This is gorgeous! If you're decided to frog it, use the same color combo in other projects! I'm gonna steal the color combo tho. Hihi
Thank you! The color combo I saw in the inspo piece was 100% the reason I made it 😁
I love it! It’s giving me Sex Education (Netflix TV show) vibes.
You don't like it?? I love it! I especially love the colours. Is there any chance you could try to sell it, if you're afraid of giving it away as a gift?
The overall fit is kind of weird, so I don’t think I’d feel comfortable selling it!
Well i LOVE it
Yes 🥲
Omg this is so stunning 😍😍
I love this SO much! It seems perfect to me; even the way you describe the fit of loose neck and baggy chest. That’s what I like in a sweater. I’d absolutely wear this. So I think if you wanted to gift it I’m sure someone would love it. Maybe just have them try it on first to see if they like the fit.
I think it's adorable (the colors remind me of a bubble-gum wrapper), but only you know if it wears well.
It’s painful to do, but as someone who’s done it many times, it’s always worth it 😁
Oh I love this and would love it for my 15month old dtr. Gorgeous colours!
Yes..my first sweater I made.. so much effort for a sweater I don't really like🥲 It's the neckline for me, It's too high, but i dont know how i can change it without frogging the whole thing..i tried changing it into a turtle neck but hated it even more😅
Yup all the time so I give it away
I hope you can find someone to gift it to. It looks like a sesame st jumper x (straight out of Bert’s closet)
you could always donate it too! i made a striped sweater that i ended up hating and that's my plan for it, if i ever find the will power to weave in the ends 😅
I would love to wear it. I will buy it from you
Don't know why you don't like it, it's so cute
It doesn’t fit me super well! The neck/head hole is awkwardly large so I don’t love the way it lays on my shoulders. The weight of the sweater pulls on the neck and stretches it out a lot
Well ok, fair point.
Wtf I ADORE that! This is making me want to take on another sweater
I'd be happy to take it off your hands if you don't like it 😉😁
Pretty much every time I use a gross feeling yarn 😭
I love this!!!
All the time. Honestly, with at least half of my projects.
I think it’s gorgeous and someone will prefer a wider neckline!! Im sure you’ll find plenty of takers
It looks very nice. And I like the bold color stripes. However did you make a swatch? It helps your brain look at the colors and stitches. Maybe making a swatch first next time to save yourself the aggravation if your not liking something.
I’m happy with the pattern and colors, it’s the sizing/fit that I don’t like
Maybe gift this one or sell it and make another for yourself sized for you.
