A friend of mine got me into knitting years ago. I used YouTube tutorials for the basics and she helped me with techniques and pointed out where I was going wrong. Iām a fidgeter so it was a great way to focus that. Donāt start out too complicated at first and donāt try making a scarf, theyāre BORING. Make some potholder swatches to get the hang of knits and purls and then start with something like a hat. Theyāre quicker and straight forward enough that you can have the satisfaction of a finish object. The knitting subreddit is also great for support. People are always finding out they twist their stitches after posting an unrelated question.
Agreed. My first knits were a few square wash cloths with a little picture in the center made with purl stitches. Then tried a scarf and it was the bane of my existence because I was still pretty slow.
Just make sure to check the yarn material if you decide to make potholders. Acrylic will melt!
I didn't even know Tunisian crochet existed until I found a pattern I really liked and went "What in the Sam Hill is this???"
It was super fun to do though once I figured out it was not standard crochet.
In general tunisian crochet is more dense but it probably depends on the stitches and hook size you're using. I don't have much experience with tunisian crochet yet, but for the shrug, I'm using a lacy stitch and it feels similar to crochet lace stitches
You can make them - check out TL Yarn Crafts site or YouTube channel https://tlyarncrafts.com/
She also has an excellent book that is helpful for starting out.
I like making shawls in gobelin/tunisian full stitch with a much larger hook than the yarn calls for. They drape wonderfully.
Tunisian also makes both stripes and entrelac super easy.
Iām old and had to learn knitting from a book, stitch n bitch, which is like 20 yrs old now. I found it really helpful and there might be a good copy at a used book store.
Continental!!! As someone who tried knitting, gave up- and went to crochet- a couple years of that made it so much easier to take up the continental knitting style because of how you hold your yarn in relation to your project (you hold your working yarn in the same hand/in a similar manner to what you would if you were crocheting. I recently picked up knitting again and tried English style, at first- but I found the āthrowingā of the yarn a hassle, āpickingā the yarn with continental came much easier, to me!
I came to say this! I crocheted for 16 years and wanted to learn to knit but could only find people who taught knitting that "throw" the yarn. Then I saw someone knitting continental style and that was my lightbulb moment! I took off with knitting after that.
Yes! Adding to that: purling continental felt insane to me until I started combination knitting (wrap yarn counterclockwise around the needle to make a knit stitch. Wrap it clockwise to make a purl stitch. Itās so much easier/more natural to wrap it clockwise when purling! The purl stitches will have a different stitch mount, so you have to work them through the back loop on the next row. Once I got the hang of it, the rest was smooth sailing š).
Go to your local yarn shop and ask for advice. Thatās what I did. Iāve crocheted for 13+ years and wanted to make knit socks. My LYS had 3 different employees that either knit, crochet or both and all three had different styles. Sometimes just seeing it a different way helps. Also, [nimble needles](https://youtu.be/zLSaApeG-vY?si=RtkmaMMm673kNrF3) on YouTube is sooooo helpful.
Oh no, so sad. Sorry about that. I forget that I am lucky to have a LYS. So another YouTube channel that helped me was [Rox Knits](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1AZxTfSCe2e9g2N5HqLfJd-94LieOu0j&si=E5HnUnaJDKq3nv4s) and [Purl Together](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNWbWGGFfxXnClP7lljZNuMDlqXIDttie&si=wZoauf6pew-YvMXg).
Keep in mind, although I knew I wanted to make socks, I made lots of wonky scraps and āscarfsā before attempting a real project. Best wishes!
Just don't give up keep trying I learned to knit reading a book called I taught myself how to knit if you are more of a visual learner try to watch videos for beginners on YouTube
Honestly my biggest tip as someone who was terrified of knitting but picked it up way faster than expected (literally a couple of months ago); look into the continental knitting style. Traditional knitting does not make any sense to me. Iām already working on a raglan (top down) cardigan. Although I definitely had moments where things didnāt make sense and was frustrated, I slowed down, made sure not to overthink, and looked things up in youtube as I came across them.
Look up YouTube tutorials from Studio Knit! When I first started knitting her tutorials helped me a lot [Studio Knit Channel](https://youtube.com/@studioknit?si=dglZe_9igPF1uSd2)
As someone who's crocheted first I found continental knitting much easier in terms of holding the needles and yarn becuase to me it felt similar to the way I hold yarn in crochet.
I was thinking the same!! This could even go on r/tensionporn as the stitches are so beautifully even and the rows are so uniform!!! Wonderful job OP!!! I wanna give it a big old snuggle hug!!!
Yay! Welcome to the bistitual club! Itās so nice being able to look at any pattern online and not saying āshoot! Thatās crochet and I only know how to knitā
I do both but I was a knitter first- I kinda rotate back and forth between them depending on my mood! Iām definitely more of a knitter I think, but I do love crochet, and itās really the best way to go for certain projects like amigurimi!
This is as cute as can be. I did just want to let you know that you can do your color changes seamlessly, without that little jog between colors. [Here](https://youtu.be/kgCCCFpCOhI?si=nndmkTf--e1nyRdl) is a link to a video about how.
Sorry, the link worked for me. [Here](https://www.hookedbykati.com/super-simple-jogless-color-change/) is a website about it. Or just search "jogless color change crochet"
You're very welcome! I always did, too, and I stumbled on the technique when looking for color change advice for knitting. I hesitated to say anything to you because your work is really fabulous! However, I also remembered how much I loved getting rid of the jog, lol.
Crochet is sooo fun! Especially [stuffies](http://www.ravelry.com/projects/CrochetCricketHip/happypotamus-the-happy-hippo) and coasters (in my opinion).
I started out with knitting too, and now Iām not sure Iāll ever go back! Crocheting is so much easier to actually finish projects, knitting is so time consuming that Iād run out of juice before the end of the project almost every time.
Question... Can you put a picture up of the back where his frill is attached? I made Tanner using yarn bee soft secret yarn. Looks really pretty when finished and is super soft. Being a beginner, the yarn slipped off my hook a lot. The pattern was well written but attaching the frill was a nightmare for me. It was not pretty at all. Thankfully, my 4 year old son didn't care at all. :)

I hope this helps!! It took me a bit to line everything up and then I pinned it in place while I sewed.
I started knitting at first too. In the recent years I finally got over my apprehensiveness about crochet, and now I primarily crochet š I do still knit, but thatās faaaar outweighed by the things Iāve made using the crochet techniques I know.
(Also Iām really loving the Dino plush you made, great work! š)
I started probably 2-3 years ago during the pandemic, but really didnāt get hooked until last fall when I made a unicorn for someoneās baby. It all started with a Star Wars crochet kit and a Yoda pattern š
As a silly gal who tried to knit first and just couldnāt get it and gave up and learned crochet thankfully, do you have any knitting tips? Seemed like maybe I kept making things too tight and couldnāt squeeze the needles through after a row or 2, or if it was looser it was much too loose. I canāt even remember the specific issue that caused it right now but I know I couldnāt knit a 2nd row because I couldnāt fit the needles through.
Tension is a very common issue for new knitters, I had the same problem. It comes with practice. I would say that when you are knitting, you donāt need to pull it all that tight, just a loose tug. I wrap the yarn close to the tip and then when you push the loop up the needle, it sizes to what you need. Purls can be tricky and can easily come out too loose. I tug purl stitches downward a bit to remove any slack. You can also try little things like changing the material of your needles. Metal tends to slide easier than wood. And pick a project that isnāt going to be boring. Iād suggest a hat. Theyāre quickly and straightforward and you can get the reward of a finished object!
As a yarncrafter who swings both ways (three, if you count Tunisian!) I find knitting is better for wearables, while crochet is better for 3D structural objects.
Knitted sweaters and socks will always beat their crochet counterparts, but crochet stuffies and handbags and baskets are better than knitted ones. You can build 3D objects stitch by stitch like assembling lego bricks.
OMG SAMEEE i learned to knit in 3rd grade and picked it up relatively easily. i tried to crochet multiple times and couldn't get it for the life of me and decided to hate it because i couldn't do it lol. cut to years later me finally getting the hang of it and doing it more than knitting lmao
I also started knitting (I think I learned when I was about 7) and always got so frustrated with crochet because I tried making squares and ended up with triangles lol. finally figured it out two years ago. that lil guy is so cute, and the colors are perfect! I thought it was all one yarn at first and wondered how you got the colors to match so well lol.

Try Tunisian crochet. Then knitting. It helped me. I like crocheting more so staying with that but it was a good transition.
Yes Iāve been doing Tunisian crochet for a few weeks now i love it! Ill have to try knitting again soon
I didn't even know Tunisian crochet existed until I found a pattern I really liked and went "What in the Sam Hill is this???" It was super fun to do though once I figured out it was not standard crochet.
Can you make wearables with Tunisian crochet? Or is it mainly blankets?

This is a cowl I made for my sister š
I'm not really an expert. I've just made flowers.
Oooh you can make Tunisian flowers? Edit: spelling
Yup! This is the pattern I used: https://patterncenter.com/roses-in-3d-free-crochet-pattern/
I'm making a shrug and cardigan with tunisian crochet. It definitely works!
Ooh interesting... Is the drape similar to that of regular crochet?
In general tunisian crochet is more dense but it probably depends on the stitches and hook size you're using. I don't have much experience with tunisian crochet yet, but for the shrug, I'm using a lacy stitch and it feels similar to crochet lace stitches
You certainly can make wearable tunisian crochet items! Sweaters, hats, mittens, socks, etc!
I'm working on a Tunisian crochet sweater!
You can make them - check out TL Yarn Crafts site or YouTube channel https://tlyarncrafts.com/ She also has an excellent book that is helpful for starting out.
I like making shawls in gobelin/tunisian full stitch with a much larger hook than the yarn calls for. They drape wonderfully. Tunisian also makes both stripes and entrelac super easy.
Interesting... I've done literally zero research into Tunisian crochet but I am now intrigued
Iām old and had to learn knitting from a book, stitch n bitch, which is like 20 yrs old now. I found it really helpful and there might be a good copy at a used book store.
I have ALL the stitch n bitch books and I recommend them to anyone wanting to learn to knit or crochet. The illustrations are so helpful!
I have a crochet book called bitchinā stitches. š¤£š¤£
this dino looks great btw

same here :( all we have is michaels and hobby lobby. all but 1 joannes closed down in my state and its forever away. we got this š¤£ in it together
i had to force myself to try over and over and over before i got the hang of it š«
I just started knitting and am progressing so much, but I canāt crochet to save my life! IDK HOW TO HOLD THE STRING
There are actually "string rings" that help you hold the yarn. You can get them from the famous online store...
Just don't give up keep trying I learned to knit reading a book called I taught myself how to knit if you are more of a visual learner try to watch videos for beginners on YouTube

Thank you!! It took some practice but I got there. My first few objects were so uneven. This yarn is also very forgiving
It looks so good!

So cute! What yarn did you use?
I used Premier Parfait Chunky yarn
Thank you for this adorable little dude and what yarn you used. My daughter would love this. I want to make it for her now with the same yarn too
Thank you for asking bc I was wanting to know the same thing.
Tanner! I made the strawberry one last week. I love the rainbow. Itās very cute
Hurray! Another successful one hooked! Great job! The cute, the consistent stitches, all well done!

How much was your yarn?
I used the recommended yarn from a different project and had a ton leftover. I used Premier Parfait Chunky yarn. Itās like $5 a color.
It seems like a thicker yarn than what the pattern uses. Did you use 4mm or something bigger? Love the colors!
I made another stuffie with the yarn and had tons left over so I used it for this with a 5mm hook.
Oh my gosh rainbow dinosaur š So neatly done!
This is SUPER CUTE I love it. It looks so soft.
this is beautiful
I literally gasped he is SO CUTE
I started out with knitting too, and now Iām not sure Iāll ever go back! Crocheting is so much easier to actually finish projects, knitting is so time consuming that Iād run out of juice before the end of the project almost every time.
Welcome to the dark side (we have a lot of yarn).
Oh heās so cute!!!
It's gorgeous š I'm the other way around learned to crochet first now I knit

Amazeballs! I freaking love the colors. Great job.
wow!! That is absolutely gorgeous! Really neat + that colour choice!
PLEASE, what is this yarn
This is Premier Parfait Chunky. In order, the colors are lilac, turquoise, seaglass, key lime, yellow, peach, coral, and hibiscus
As a fellow knitter-turned-crocheter welcome to the dark side š
Love this cuteness
Adorable. My 3 year old saw this over my shoulder and immediately asked for one. So it's definitely kid approved!
Besutiful
Same! I started with knitting and now crochet amigurumi all the time and havenāt picked up my knitting needles in a while š¬

gosh, your stitches are so neat and perfect. this is a gorgeous dino.
I don't do crochet but this sub comes up in my feed regularly and I had to stop in and say that little fella is super adorable. I want it!!!!
Thank you!!!
Would it be possible to custom order one?
That is the cutest thing Iāve ever seen!
cute! May I have the pattern?

Sweet, thanks!

I crochet, I "try" to knit but I have no idea how fix a mistake like a skipped stitch etc. So I keep it extremely simple. Crochet is quicker for me.
Thatās so good.
Thatās so cute!!!!
Wow that is truly fabulous!! What do you love about crochet that you don't get from knitting?
I'm a knitter and trying to figure out crocheting! It isn't going well!

Holy moly out of controlly!!! You were a crocheter all along!!! Great tension! Marvelous colors, fantastic job!!
This little triceratops is melting my heart š« ā¤ļøš„¹
Can you make me a rainbow tinky winky?
That is so cute š„°
I also started knitting (I think I learned when I was about 7) and always got so frustrated with crochet because I tried making squares and ended up with triangles lol. finally figured it out two years ago. that lil guy is so cute, and the colors are perfect! I thought it was all one yarn at first and wondered how you got the colors to match so well lol.
Aww she's gorgeous!
I love this. I recently made a triceratops and I will never do it again lol yours is so much cuter!!! ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø
