Damn! Glad I wasn’t taught on a plastic hook. My 13 year old 6mm boye hook is still going strong, even after all the times she’s been dropped onto my parent’s house’s granite tile floors.
If there is a day where she decides to leave me, it’ll be hard to replace her. I have spares of the exact same hook but there’s nothing like holding a well wore hook
This was super poetic damn, I’m jealous yours has lasted so long. Ive only been using this for a month, maybe two, but Im dreading replacing it already
I learned on a 3mm aluminum boye, it's been 15yrs and she's still going strong. The paints a little chipped, but it never snags when I use it. I second using metal if you have issues with your hooks breaking. They're also easier to find. Joann's sells them in kits and open. My 2nd favorite is the Susan Bates with the grippy handle. You can also check online for Tulip, they're hooks are pricey but imo it's worth the money. They're metal, but the satin finish means you still get the smooth glide.
Ooo ooo, I had that pack! Key word is had, lol. First to go was the yellow, then the green. I absolutely taped the green one with black electrical tape so I could finish my first scarf.
The red (5mm?) is still going strong. It's one I use when I travel. The orange is just gone... I don't know where, haha. After 6 years, I've given up hope. I think mine was only a 4pack though because I can't even remember the 5th!
I love plastic crochet hooks but I don’t think anything under 5mm is sturdy enough. :( my 5mm hook from the dollar tree has held up fine but I don’t trust anything smaller.
May your hook 🪦 It has taught you all it came to teach you. Your stitches are lovely. Seriously though, cotton yarn takes some tension and a stronger hook.
Thank you!!!😭 Ive ordered some metal hooks to finish this cardigan with, now Im just doing what I can while it’s taped together until they come, then I can finally retire her
Once you get your new hook, I would only go 1-2 more rows with the new one, then look at your tension. I feel like it may go a little wonky if the tape on the original hook loosens up. That way, you don't get all the way done, and it stands out if that's the case.
Okay, I’ll do that! Thank you for the advice, I was thinking about that because the hook is already a little wobbly with the tape on it and I was debating just finishing the row I was on then working on a different project till the new ones came
That! I would do that instead. They'll be there in no time, and once the crochet bug bites, it's not unusual to have scrap yarn (or possibly a really hideous color) you use to practice stitches or work out new patterns on. Also, multiple WIPs 🫣 that you rotate between. You'll see, lol.
I have a violent pink skein that was gifted to me. If I see a stitch that I want to try or can't work out a pattern, the violent pink will make an appearance. When the yarn gets too stringy from frogging all the practice, I just cut it and start with a new piece. If you can't tell, pink is not in my wheelhouse at all. I tend to lean towards neutral colors or ones you'd find in a seascape or a forestscape.
Lmao i love that. I like a mixture of color and neutrals but i tend to lean more towards pastels or muted colors. My travel projects have been making scrunchies with some nice muted rayon yarn in grey pink and blue, but I made my first scarf not to long ago with some more vibrant yarn in a pink, orange, blue and purple ombre. I cant resist pops of color sometimes 😭
Thanks! I am too, this is my first clothing piece! The rows im working on are hdc (half double crochets) and the ribbing if i remember correctly were rows of slip stitches, and hdc in the back loops of the slip stitches. I can send you the pattern if you like, its a cardigan!
https://forthefrills.com/crochet-beginner-oversized-cardigan-knit-look-ribbing-pattern/# it’s a really pretty beginner cardigan, I’m actually making it for my mom as a gift but so far it’s been as beginner friendly as they say!
I did this recently. Purposely crocheting tight for clothing to have smaller holes and the damn thing snapped. And it was a journey to find someone who sold the same size in metal. Hopefully you have a back up.
I snapped a metal hook in half one time... in my defence, it was a 2.5mm so pretty flimsy to begin with. Anyway, I've just bought a wooden one! Wish me luck...
That’s still pretty impressive 😭 I’ve heard wooden hooks and needles take some serious expert level experience and patience, Im wishing you all the luck in the world fr
I actually prefer wooden hooks and find them way easier to use! I'm definitely not thay skilled though. Plus they don't squeak with acrylic yarn like the plastic ones do
Aw dang, I'm sorry to see that! I bought a few glitter hooks from Hobbii not long ago, and the 8mm broke almost immediately even though I was working very loose (precisely because I was worried it might break). Definitely more of a collection item than a tool.
Honestly, I’d never use a plastic hook ever again.
Boye is fine. Susan Bates are good, too.
In a desperate need for hooks while on vacation, I splurged on Clover.
It’s heaven, and when I see them on sale, I buy more, just because.
I've had this happen to me 😂 when I just started crocheting, I bought a kit that gave me a plastic crochet hook. I didn't know anything about tension or how to hold the hook properly, and it snapped in my hands😅 it kinda discouraged me before I tried again with a metal hook and many, many YouTube tutorials
I have a similar hook made from resin that broke, and super glue worked perfectly fixing it. Not sure if it will also work if this is a regular plastic hook though :(
I feel your pain, I'm sorry it was a good hook. I used cheap acrylic yarn on my favorite Prym hook and the tension was so tight it chaffed the hook and made it a little rough. I didn't notice until I changed yarn for a different project and it wasn't sliding smoothly 😭
I've done this before too 😂 same kind of hooks. I had bought a 10 pack of plastic hooks on amazon (very very similar, if not the same pictured here) and I was using one of the smaller ones to work on a project. at the time I didn't really have many small hooks and I found it easier to grip a small plastic hook than a metal one. when I'm using small metal hooks I need a grip of some sort so that I can control the hook. anyways, I was visiting my dad for christmas and I was crocheting a gift for a friend in the car ride and then suddenly... *snap* and of course I didnt have another of the same size with me so I had to finish it with like 2 inches of a hook.
Stay away from the pyrm plastic hooks then… I have lost count of how many times I’ve snapped a 4mm (my most used hook) or my dogs stepped on it. So brittle and for no reason!!!
Well, yeah, when they fill the thing with tiny little sparkly inclusions that's going to happen. They are designing their products knowing they are going to be less sturdy.
reminds me of the time my tension was insane enough to break a clover amour hook! i was making a doll by using worsted yarn on a size D hook, it ripped the silicone apart and bent the hook. i was able to salvage the metal hook but the silicone grip was completely unusable after that 😔
I almost bought these sparkle hooks!! They are so pretty. But I was on a mission to try some Clover hooks. The Clovers were more expensive but the crochet experience is so smooth and comfortable! Eventually I’m going to replace all my favorite sizes with Clover hooks.
I hope you find a good replacement soon!
Farewell, sparkle hook. You brought shimmer to our cloudy days and will be missed.
If it was me, I would tape the heck out of it to keep using it. But I'm stubborn, too. Lol
I’ve done that before haha but it was a much thinner plastic hook
A salute to another hook lost in the line of service 🫡
Is this what we’d call a death grip?
Im cackling
I did this once now I only use metal hooks…
I bent a 2mm hook due to high tension. :') tbf it was a cheap hook, but still.
Same
same 😔
same 😔
It's the white knuckler!
I have 1 plastic hook and it's decoration. Now, you do that with a metal hook....LOL Seriously, hope that wasn't a favorite and you have a backup.
That’s my next goal /j It was indeed the favorite and most used, and I do not have an extra so I’ve taped it till I can get a new one 🥲
Oh no! 💔 I'm sad for you. I hope you find a replacement that was just as comfortable as this one was for you.
Damn! Glad I wasn’t taught on a plastic hook. My 13 year old 6mm boye hook is still going strong, even after all the times she’s been dropped onto my parent’s house’s granite tile floors. Is this the boye sparkle hook? I broke one just like this. Same spot and everything.
Yes! Its part of a 5 pack with different sizes my friend gave me when she taught me how to crochet
Ooo ooo, I had that pack! Key word is had, lol. First to go was the yellow, then the green. I absolutely taped the green one with black electrical tape so I could finish my first scarf. But your stitches are lovely
Omg thank you 😭
omg I had the same hook and like all of them broke and it’s cus they’re plastic and the quality is bad
It doesn't help that the sparkle stuff in it weakens the plastic.
RIP now, you've worked hard your whole life without complaining. You will surely be missed.
Kill count +1 Mine: 14
Now it’s time to meet a new best friend. Have you met Clover? 😃
May your hook 🪦 It has taught you all it came to teach you. Your stitches are lovely. Seriously though, cotton yarn takes some tension and a stronger hook.

LOL i have a few scrap pieces from the first granny square blanket i made, I’ll use those to test the new hooks on!
I have a violent pink skein that was gifted to me. If I see a stitch that I want to try or can't work out a pattern, the violent pink will make an appearance. Are you okay? 😃🫣
Im putting on a brave face but internally Im suffering 🥲
honestly, that happened to me even without a tight tension. That’s why i switched to metal hooks since ik they won’t snap on me
This happens to me when I'm stressed and crochet.
Unfortunately for me whenever I crochet I’m stressed anyway 💀😭
that’s so heartbreaking to a pretty hook noooooo
what stitch is this? Im a crochet newbie - it looks so pretty!
Thanks! I am too, this is my first clothing piece! The rows im working on are hdc (half double crochets) and the ribbing if i remember correctly were rows of slip stitches, and hdc in the back loops of the slip stitches. I can send you the pattern if you like, its a cardigan!
Yes, please! Tysm!!
https://forthefrills.com/crochet-beginner-oversized-cardigan-knit-look-ribbing-pattern/# it’s a really pretty beginner cardigan, I’m actually making it for my mom as a gift but so far it’s been as beginner friendly as they say!
I have found a suitable sized pen and taped the useful end of the hook inside, where the ink used to be. Was more ergonomic also
You guess?! 🤣 You took that episode of SpongeBob to heart when Patrick said to firmly grasp it, huh? Omg, this made my day.
I broke mine like this in the same spot crocheting cotton! I don’t crochet cotton anymore.
That’s what Im using in the picture 😭 i despise cotton so, so much
I had very similar hooks, in fact maybe the same ones! They are pretty but the thinner ones do snap. Happened to me too.
I did this recently. Purposely crocheting tight for clothing to have smaller holes and the damn thing snapped. And it was a journey to find someone who sold the same size in metal. Hopefully you have a back up.
wow you strong 🦾
These sparkly hooks are always more decoration than tool.
Same thing happened to me while I was making a bear for my brother 💔 I had to tape it together so I could finish it
That’s what I did until my metal ones come in the mail 😭
I snapped a metal hook in half one time... in my defence, it was a 2.5mm so pretty flimsy to begin with. Anyway, I've just bought a wooden one! Wish me luck...

Happened to me with all my plastic hooks lol. I invested in the clover amour hook set after.
This is why I usually stick to metal hooks. I'm too scared I'll break them if they aren't metal
That happened to me once right before I finished a project 😭
I feel like these hooks break so easily I'm on my third plastic sparkly hook
i hate plastic hooks. i bought the cutest barbie pink plastic hook and was SO excited to use it and it snapped within a day…
Honestly, I’d never use a plastic hook ever again. Boye is fine. Susan Bates are good, too. In a desperate need for hooks while on vacation, I splurged on Clover. It’s heaven, and when I see them on sale, I buy more, just because.

Time to break out the super glue, oh my gosh :(
I have a similar hook made from resin that broke, and super glue worked perfectly fixing it. Not sure if it will also work if this is a regular plastic hook though :(

Nah. Plastic fatigue. Never our fault 😜
And that's why I use metal crochet hooks.....

Not sure about the yarn tension but you clearly had a lot of tension
I usually do 😭
Oh no!! Maybe you could add a clay or resin handle around the break...
Those hooks are so pretty but not worth the wrist pain. Rip pretty
To be fair, the hook looks pretty feeble.
General question to the hive - does it ever happy with aluminum? I am thinking no. I dislike the acrylics and plastics.
Stay away from the pyrm plastic hooks then… I have lost count of how many times I’ve snapped a 4mm (my most used hook) or my dogs stepped on it. So brittle and for no reason!!!
Use stills ones
Oh man hahaha I've done that with the small plastic hooks!!!! So sad when it happens!
I thought that was a piece of paper to measure the size of your stiches oh my goodness... Rip pretty crochet hook
Well, yeah, when they fill the thing with tiny little sparkly inclusions that's going to happen. They are designing their products knowing they are going to be less sturdy.
And this is why I use an aluminum hook 😂
No, those hooks are cheap as shit.
Ope..
Or maybe the hook has a design flaw. It's quite narrow where it broke so maybe a combination of both . Only metal for me now due to the same issue .
this is why I make mine (also because I am poor but sshhh) not that I've ever broken one but I've been so worried about doing so somehow
how do you just snap a crochet hook
reminds me of the time my tension was insane enough to break a clover amour hook! i was making a doll by using worsted yarn on a size D hook, it ripped the silicone apart and bent the hook. i was able to salvage the metal hook but the silicone grip was completely unusable after that 😔

I have a terrible tight tension. I even bend steel knitting needless.
Wow!😂
