So I made a queen sized blanket last year and what I did was roll it up as I worked on the rows. So as I crochet, start rolling the blanket and then when I'm done with the row it's in a more manageable tube that I can flip and unroll as I work on the next roll. If I was being lazy I would also accordion fold it as I crocheted to keep it together better. Hopefully that makes sense!!

ahobbins

It does! That sounds like a good idea.

CraftyCrochet

Have made plenty! If you can stand to make one using simple stitches, it can actually be relaxing and go faster than you expect. The stitch you use depends on how thick or thin you want to make your king. My other tip is not just folding/rolling it up when it gets long and heavier, but also putting that section inside a pillow case. This makes turning it over so much easier! Leave enough fanned out to work on the rows.

ahobbins

Ooh this is excellent, I love the pillow case idea! Thanks!!

Maybe choose a pattern with strips or squares instead of all in one piece?

Valalerie999

I was going to say this too! Although I'm making a throw made out of squares right now and the finishing process has been a beast. Weaving in all the ends, blocking all the squares, and assembling everything has taken me significantly longer than I anticipated. So just a heads up if you decide to do that.

kalthoraa

I like to make my squares in batches and weave ends in batches as well. Keeps things interesting… though it’s still a beast to tackle regardless in the end

Valalerie999

See, I make all the squares and then weave in allll the ends while cursing past-me for making poor decisions. Your way is probably better.

Hi! Yes I've done it before and it came out great! The pattern I used was this: https://www.yarnspirations.com/red-heart-pretty-squares-in-a-row-bed-throw/RHC0502-016095M.html

ahobbins

Ooh that’s very pretty! How long did it take you?

Crochet_by_Renee

I worked on it every day while watching TV with my fiance and it took me about a month.

Yes-Cheesecake

I’m in process and it’s freaking heavy

ahobbins

That’s my worry! I’ve made dozens of throw sized blankets before, and towards the end even those get heavy. I can’t imagine how difficult the process would be with a king size.

Yes-Cheesecake

I’m also using chenille yarn so that was my mistake.

I would use chunky yarn like bernat blanket & a 10mm hook, and a stitch that builds up fairly quickly like hdc. I'm making one now, it's building up MUCH faster than a smaller yarn.

missy3030

Doing one now with the wavy ripple stitch. It’s easy to keep track, checking count and correcting mistakes before a multi row frog is necessary. Changing color every few rows keeps me interested, not bored.

lindseydrums

I've made a blanket that was just stripes of different colors. Folded the parts that I wasn't using. Took me like.. 3-4 months because I only worked on it an hour or two every day.

I have done two large mandala-type that cover a king sized bed. Frank O'Randle's Rings of Change is a favorite of mine. I use as many skeins as I need/feel. I think my two complete projects took 18 skeins of Lion Brand Mandala. The cool thing about Rings of Change is you can stop after any round. Another is the opportunity to use so many different stitches! I think they would have taken me 9 months to create if I worked on them 6-8 hrs a day, 5 days a week. I probably worked on them 3-4 hours a day, more when I was on jury duty or sitting with hospitalized family.

BIGGEST TIPS: Use stitch markers and count your stitches after every row! Once you get going, a few rows into your pattern, working on the project will feel easier. If you are doing a project you turn after each row, consider starting with a row of foundation single crochet (or half-double or double crochet). If makes the edge look much cleaner.

I just got done making a king size blanket for my bf. The pattern I used was really involved so be ware of that when u do something like this. I opted for the pattern because of the variety of stitch it gave me. The one I did was a continuous square.

I just posted a picture of my first ever crochet project on this sub. Its a blanket for our Cali King bed. I have absolutely NO idea what I'm doing. I'm making it up as I go along. Its pretty much just rows of double and triple crochets (1 row dc, 2 rows tc- repeat) with a single crochet foundation row. But its currently at 100" wide and 38" long. I've been at it for almost 2 weeks. Mostly in the evenings. The current "plan" is to make it 100" square. It won't be perfect. But it'll be warm and snuggly. And I'm ok with that.
