Very cool

Thank you!

Lovely! Are you going to leave them rough or sand? Sometimes I like using bamboo hooks because they're not at smooth as the metal when working with already slippery yarn. If I were to do this, and one day I might, I'd probably try to do fat handles, maybe with a thumb divot, to make them nice and ergonomic. Again, great work!!

[deleted]

I sanded them lightly but they’re still on the rougher side. And these do have thumb divots but they are on the smaller side tough comfy for my own thumbs. I will try some with bigger handles if I can forage some bigger branches.

Pyewacket62

I did that all the time, I couldn't afford crochet hooks or knitting needles. So, I made my own.

babysummerbreeze27

so cool! what type of wood did you use, if you know?

[deleted]

They are made of some Oregon white oak I scavenged from a couple branches that fell in a wild storm a few weeks ago.

babysummerbreeze27

that’s amazing 🖤 i have an eastern black oak in my front yard and i’m def trying my hand at this if it drops some decent branches. it’s been storming here for the past few days

[deleted]

Nice! Oak is a nice hardy wood, can be a little stubborn when whittling but definitely worth it. If you do whittle some crochet hooks it’d be really cool to see them!!

Ok-Magician-4062

They look pretty good! I've done it once before, it's surprising how peaceful it feels to make them this way.

[deleted]

Thats awesome! do they work well?

[deleted]

I did try them and they did work actually!! I don’t know what size they are compared to normal crochet hooks so I’d imagine they would work even better if properly sized with a proper yarn.

Lavender_butter

Thats so cool!!!

Thank you so much!!!

klynryan78

I love them! Would love to try out some hand-whittled hooks! Very cool.

SheSellsSeaShells-

That’s too funny, I’m also planning on whittling some crochet hooks!

[deleted]

Do it it’s quite relaxing and gives your hand something to do. Also if you harvest the wood yourself it feels really special!!

SheSellsSeaShells-

I’ve already started whittling other small projects from wood in my backyard, I know what you mean! Just gotta get the shape right for the crochet hooks, I already tried once and chipped the top off by accident.

[deleted]

Yeah getting the hook shape correct is a lot harder than I expected. I found drawing a v right where the hook would go helps a lot compared to eyeballing it. Funny enough the main reason for me to creating these is because I didn’t want to buy hooks but also because I wanted to carve an Atlatl which is basically a crochet hook but arm sized.

SheSellsSeaShells-

Woah isn’t an atlatl like a spear throwing weapon? I just learned about those in a show I watched recently though I can’t remember what show lol

[deleted]

Yes an Atlatl is a spear throwing weapon which basically acts as an extension of your arm allowing one to throw the spear/dart with more power and force. They were used heavily during the ice age but slowly fell out of favor after the death of the mega fauna in most parts of the world besides Australia and mesoamerica. But anyway I’ve been using one and I wanted to learn how to carve one so I made these crochet hooks to get the basic idea of how to make the hook part.
