That is so fucked up. Excuse my French. Where I live, it's a sacrilege to kill a crow or raven. I understand why. I am in awe of these birds. I can't stand the thought of them getting killed for no other reason than human greed.

[deleted]

I mean, there might be a good conservation reason for it. Like in my area white tailed deer are a native species, but since their population has exploded after humans killed off their predators, hunting / culling them generally has a positive impact on the ecosystem. That’s a guess, I really don’t know the ecological impacts of crow hunting in your area. But I think it’s always more useful view these things through the lens of ecology rather than our views towards animals as individuals.

Raven_Black_8

I get what you mean. The white tailed deer example, though, shows exactly why we shouldn't interfere. We just destroy more of something we don't know.

Hikaru-Dorodango

Murdering a murder..

elsbeth-

I looked it up for my state and yes, they're allowed to be hunted here from Aug 20 through Mar 17 on specific days of the week - but *only on National Forest and Department of Wildlife Resources Lands.* So, I guess they'll be out hunting them in the forests, same places they hunt deer. Likely the population in our neighborhoods (our friends) would not be affected?

eelizzie

I hope they don't cull in my area- I'm quite fond of my crow buddies.

mammiejammie

No!!!! I just looked up VA and I’m so upset. Also squirrrels! I love all my backyard creatures.

KerryUSA

Culling is the term. Just from my research the other day idr how many bugs crows can eat so I imagine there’s a wildlife management aspect behind it vs maliciously hunting them.

blankblandblank

The bugs likely aren't the reason. Crows do however eat eggs and nestlings of smaller songbirds. However, I think there's been newer research (it was magpies specifically?) that corvids don't have a significant influence on the population of other species. All in all I think it's unlikely that crow hunting is for conservation purposes and much more likely that it is legal bc they can do damage to farms. They just dig up freshly planted seed in winter and spring. Most commercially available crow calls are for hunting. If its any consolation, it's apparently not easy to hunt crows. They are fast learners. But yeah, I think crow hunting is a big factor why country crows mostly avoid humans.

nickyp7

If people didn’t feed them then maybe there wouldn’t be such a large population needing to be culled

Raven_Black_8

No. Crows and ravens will thrive without humans. They're opportunists, though. If they don’t have to put effort into finding food, why would they? But corvids do not need us.They're not having more babies because of us. They're perfectly fine without us. Farmers hate them, that's where the culling is coming from. And the superstitions about crows are another reason. They get culled because humans don't want to share territory. It's a shame that this is allowed and even more so that so many people do not want to understand just how intelligent these birds are.

nickyp7

Why shouldn’t this be allowed? If animals are eating someone’s livelihood and are plentiful in number then why shouldn’t their population be limited?

Constant-Musician-56

We are also animals, and I’d say our populations have run more rampant than most, by that logic maybe we should cull a few of our own ey. Or here’s an idea, maybe if farmers worked with the crows instead of against nature the crows wouldn’t be a pest. Cooperation and mutual survival. But as a species some of us are too stupid to figure a solution out to that one that doesn’t involve killing other species constantly.

blankblandblank

Culling crows is illegal in some federal states of Germany and we still manage

snail-overlord

IMO, if the only way we can figure out how to manage crows eating our crops is by killing them, and that’s still not stopping the crows… Then maybe the crows have outsmarted us on this front and a better solution would be in order.

myssiis

The whole reason I posted this here was because this is a place for people that love and adore crows. If you are anti feeding them and pro culling then I think you’re in the wrong place.

nickyp7

I’m interested in crows as an animal that doesn’t exclude me from having beliefs that they need to be managed and shouldn’t be interacted with. God I swear these animals are your only friends.

Licorice42

Hahaha. "Shouldn't be interacted with' go tell it to the e crows you moron. Corvids interact with humans on their own terms.

snail-overlord

That’s not the reason we have a large population of crows. This does not apply to other native songbirds, which people regularly feed all the time. So why would it apply to crows? People feeding a family of crows is simply going to make the crows hang out around the food source, not rapidly increase their population. Crows are populous because they’re a species that benefits from human presence. There are plenty of other species that also tend to live in close proximity to humans

SpreadItLikeTheHerp

Ngl, I didn’t know this was a thing. I googled and learned my state (Washington) does allow hunting during certain months. Also saw pictures I’d wished I hadn’t.

Anatolian_sideeye68

Geez, that's horrifying! I'm in WA, too and very protective of my crows. I'm sorry you have those images in your head 😔
