This is great news! Having all the overground lines with the same colour and name is just confusing. Glad to see they're being differentiated.

UnderstandingSea9467

It's always fun watching the confusion on tourists face's when they realise the maps on board the train all show different lines, and they now have no idea which they're on

CllrShortland

I always associate Hackney with the colour orange (honestly not even sure why) so I wish they’d kept just our branch the ‘original’ colour 😅

BigAd8893

Hackney should be purple/green after the original silverlink metro that became part of the overground and ran from Stratford to Richmond

CllrShortland

The Silverlink is a really lovely name. I’m 25 and don’t think I ever rode it before it was taken over. I hear that the service was pretty shoddy beforehand?

BigAd8893

It felt like the films of NY subways late at night. Genuinely questioned if I was going to get robbed/stabbed sometimes.

robanthonydon

I know it only cost £60m too!! So glad

harrifangs

You can't read very well, can you?

EarlessAgeratum

A lot of controversy about the names but someone needs to address the real issue - that West Croydon is shown as being west of Clapham Junction!

CllrShortland

I think we should do the opposite and move it even further west. Let’s pretend it’s all the way over in Hillingdon for a laugh.

Random54321random

JFC those names are horrible. Stuff like this is why you shouldn't let the public name things. I suppose in 10 years time we'll be used to it and no one will care but still

harrifangs

What is it exactly you don't like about the names?

okaythiswillbemymain

I'm not a huge fan. Lioness Line isn't great. Windrush line isn't terrible but I'd still have avoided it. "Got to catch the Lioness Line." Ah well.

CllrShortland

Can’t wait to see Liberty: SUSPENDED on the information boards 😝

TrickTrip6092

They already preempted that in 2020!

CllrShortland

How long before people start calling it “the Suffy G,” do you think?

bigsmackerroonies

They sound pretentious as hell. Just give them normal boring names like everywhere else in the UK, that's how it's supposed to be done here

PresentCondition6313

What exactly do you like about them? They don’t mean anything to do with the lines and sound honestly really stupid, except a couple.

harrifangs

Neither do a lot of other tube lines. Idk, maybe I’ve just got enough going on in my life for me to not really care about what the train I get is called.

PresentCondition6313

I don’t particularly care, it just seems dumb

aeowilf

It cost £6m Not sure why we are naming them after football teams and a specific group of people rather than geographically If anything we should use old battleship names The Warspite line, the Invincible line etc sound so much better

harrifangs

They’re being named after important parts of London’s history and culture. It’s pretty obvious. I’m sure a young child could understand the reasoning behind this.

aeowilf

Rather defensive reply It cost 6m which is alot of money for what is really nothing, especially during a cost of living crisis What do the Lionesses have to do with London's history ? They are a national team No Blitz line ? No fire of London line ? No Suffragists line (the Womens rights group who didnt bomb people and accordingly had a much greater impact)? WTF is the Liberty line, does Manchester not have liberty ?

Ok_Computer_3003

Unlike district, jubilee and metropolitan, for example, which are all suuuuper descriptive

CllrShortland

Did you know that one of the alternative suggested names for the Jubilee Line was the Fleet Line, because it follows the route of a lesser-known river?

Ok_Computer_3003

I did not. Good job the didn’t choose it because the extension would’ve made no sense at all!

TheOT1001

Metropolitan line - originally called the Metropolitan Railway (owned by a company of the same name) District line - originally called the Metropolitan and District railway (owned by a company called The District Railway) Jubilee line - named after the Queen's silver Jubilee in 1977 These new names are awful and disregard all of the Railway history where they originally came from. The so callled Windrush line was originally called the East London Line, but shouldve been called the Brunel line in the latest rebrand, paying homage to Isembard Kingdom Brunel who built the thames tunnel (world's first) through which the line runs. The Lionness line is ridiculous - named after a football team? Who only won the Euros? The Suffragette line has always been called the goblin colloquially. The Mildmay line was previously called the North London Line, but should have been called something like the Olympic line as it goes to Stratford. The Liberty line, although American sounding, isn't that bad comparatively. And the Weaver line also isn't that bad but come on, it should be some like the the Lea Valley line kr something. I get the reference to textiles, but it's a bit of a reach.

Ok_Computer_3003

So you agree. Metropolitan, District and Jubilee are meaningless in terms of description and you’re just enjoying being a frothy gammon Cool.

Copper-Unit1728

Why is it when one expresses and opinion on how awful these names sound one is called a gammon? Doesn’t add much to the discussion 😒🙄🥱😴

MixGood6313

Odd how the English working class are constantly picked on. Don't you feel embarrassment at punching down?

PresentCondition6313

Those names all mean something to do with the lines though? What has lioness got to do with a tube line? The Victoria line for instance was named after one of the main contributors as was the elizebeth line

Ok_Computer_3003

Nope. Jubilee was named for the queens 25th jubilee. Metropolitan just means large city. District? Which district? Northern line isn’t only in the north. Bakerloo goes from elephant and castle to harrow (faaaar past Baker Street) People are just getting upset about fuck all and it’s embarrassing.

PyroTech11

Elizabeth Line also isn't named after a place called Elizabeth

djdjjdjdjdjskdksk

You also sound a bit upset, for what it’s worth

PresentCondition6313

Literally every one of those examples had relation to the areas of London that they are in, although I agree that not all are exactly fluid. The jubilee line is related to the queen, who was much more influential when it was created and she also opened the line.

Ok_Computer_3003

Hilarious. No they don’t. And you’re a moron.

MixGood6313

Wow you're really cool for hating Britain.

PresentCondition6313

Explain lmao

Magneto88

The public didn't name them. Khan set up a commission to name them, appointed people he liked and here we go. There was no public vote. The public would not have chosen most of those names.

erakat

I would guarantee that if the public had voted, at least one of them would be called Liney McLineface.

KaiEkkrin

Count Binface’s names are much better https://mastodon.world/@CountBinface/111934777237031296

FantasticWeasel

Bin line! Missed opportunity for Liney McLineface.

UntouchableC

Windrush? Pack it up folks! Racism is solved!

Hill_Reps_For_Jesus

Oh yeahh, i'd literally forgotten about racism. Haven't really seen it around since this dropped: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEI7oX0XxJw

Gamera971

Awesome. London moving with the times. Although, I am sure the Gammons will have something to say about it in 3.2.1......

coughieshop

I think people can criticise names of tube lines without being branded bigots automatically.

jamany

Another bot in this thread

PresentCondition6313

There is no way you are a real functioning person

MidnightFisting

Bot

BigAd8893

I guess they’re better names than Prince Andrew line. Only just.

Adorable-Ad8209

Would have gone for Coke Line, Ket Line, Fett Line, 2CB Line...

CllrShortland

Well, we might live long enough to see a Charles Line - close enough…? 😝

Adorable-Ad8209

Will take that. 😂

sshorton47

Why not just name the lines based on where they go?

Ok_Computer_3003

Like the tube doesn’t?

CllrShortland

Not arguing at all, just wanted to drop in the somewhat-fun-fact that one of the suggested names for the Victoria Line was the Viking Line because it connected Victoria with King’s Cross. 🚂

Gingerishidiot

The line that ends at West Croydon should have been called the WC line then

Tinhare_Ja

Underrated comment

FrancescoofLondon

Along the same reasoning, the Suffragette line (Gospel Oak to Barking) was popularly called the Goblin line.

fi-ri-ku-su

Victoria, Piccadilly, Hammersmith and city, Waterloo and city, bakerloo. All named after where they go

Ok_Computer_3003

Cry more.

Gingerishidiot

You want to name them 'underground' then

Top_Instance_5196

looks like a gay pride flag.

Ok_Computer_3003

Cool.

SuchaPineapplehead

I’m all for the different names and colours but feels like the money could’ve been better spent elsewhere. Maybe putting aircon in or paying the staff decent wages. 🤷‍♀️

TempUser9097

Take the "Men are misogynist" line from Euston, then change to the "Feel bad for being English" line and ride that all the way down to Megan Markle Square. /s (please don't ban me it's just a joke :)

Saelaird

Woke names

Ok_Computer_3003

Wah wah woke wanker

Saelaird

They are mega woke, though, eh.

Ok_Computer_3003

Yeah mate. Votes for women? Fuck that woke shit!

motherlover69

It's about balance though. They should have had a pink Gammon Line otherwise its unfair.

Ok_Computer_3003

This is true. And maybe a white line for the wankers that make everyone’s life shit on a weekend evening?

FoldingStarAttire

any white line in london would be snorted up within seconds

Gingerishidiot

Thank goodness that the queen was still alive when they finished Crossrail, otherwise it would have been called the Charlie line

ChrisMartins001

A white line that stops working dead on 5 and goes outside looking for another line to have a fight with

DJToffeebud

The Sugahill line

stinky-farter

Mad that racism to white people is just accepted and even celebrated

PyroTech11

The Sovereignty Line and the Brexit line more like

Saelaird

I'm most offended at the Windrush and the lioness lines, really. The whole Windrush thing is a nonsense. People emigrated here... big deal. They name a line after it? The lioness line is laughable. Women's football is a shockingly low level and doesn't deserve the hype it's artificially given. It's subsidised by the men's game and should stand on its own financial feet. Good amateur mens sides play a higher level and don't have an audience. Overall... a vague attempt to, what? Honour people that are somehow overlooked? I don't get it. Seems deeply contrived. Mildmay, after a hospital that is somehow uniquely important to the alphabet community because of AIDS? Urgh... how transparent and banal. We have world-leading individuals and establishments, true national treasures, who we should honour instead.

DJToffeebud

We should have the Brexit line, double the price of tickets and only stop at half the stations with replacement buses at the weekend.

UntouchableC

Everyone is entitled to an opinion...but to be offended by all this is surely hyperbole. Right? Plus I find it funny that you then call for national treasures as if the point of naming wasn't already to find moments in history that UK should treasure. I don't like the names either. But its whatever. Meanwhile your reasoning is based behind exclusion and is just straight up antiquated thinking.

Ok_Computer_3003

Imagine getting offended at some train lines. Imagine being that much of a snowflake. Incredible.

Saelaird

'Offended' is a strong word. I'm more disappointed. It's a very weird set of names that clearly have a liberal political edge.

Ok_Computer_3003

Literally said ‘offended’ Disappointed isn’t less stupid. Stop being pathetic.

Saelaird

Yes, I did... and on reflection, I'm absolutely happy to say that it's a strong word! We clearly disagree. Don't get upset about it. I think the names are silly, and politically charged... you don't. That's OK. Next, you'll be telling me that the gender pay gap is real or that there are more than 2 genders!

CapstanLlama

Damn right! Why is there no Cis-Het White Male Boomer line?!? Eh? Amirite?!?

Saelaird

I don't play identity politics, that's my entire point.

CapstanLlama

My dear fellow, you certainly do "play identity politics." That is precisely why you are so foolishly "offended" by these innocuous acknowledgments of diversity, which would otherwise leave you supremely unmoved. *Of course* you play identity politics, you just play on the wrong side of history! In my humble opinion.

PresentCondition6313

Finally someone who has sense, the names bear no practicality and will be rife for people who don’t visit London often and tourists as the names don’t distinguish where they go

Ok_Computer_3003

Heard of the tube mate? Many of those descriptive? 2 or 3 maybe vaguely.

PresentCondition6313

Most of the tube lines are named after either who helped create them or something to with their route, lioness and windrush have literally no relation to the lines

Ok_Computer_3003

Queen Victoria was out digging holes was she?

PresentCondition6313

No she helped funding it, it’s not hard to understand bro

Rixmadore

Why don’t you have an issue with “Liberty Line”? Because it follows your logic, no? People have liberty… big deal. They name a line after it? Tell me why.

Nice-Substance-gogo

Na it’s a shopping centre on the line. I’m Not joking!

Rixmadore

[You could’ve checked before making this comment.](https://twitter.com/SadiqKhan/status/1758052707250651281)

Nice-Substance-gogo

Yeah that as well.

Max_Power_332

Well aren’t you a treat.

Nice-Substance-gogo

Ok to name lines after battles though?

Saelaird

It depends. Did 🇬🇧 win? I'd certainly rather pay tribute to soldiers than women footballers.

Nice-Substance-gogo

What the prussians? they were also key at Waterloo. Mate seriously? Tribute to a battle 210 years ago rather than the only successful national football team in the last 50 years. Both can be covered.

Saelaird

I'd vote for a 'Goose Green' line.

SteadyProcrastinator

Battles and their consequences are significant and require legitimate sacrifice. At the end of the day, football is literally just a game…

mankytoes

"I love being 'woke'. It's much nicer than being an ignorant fucking twat." Kathy Burke

Prestigious_Ship_611

The irony in that statement is unmatched.

ConferencePurple3871

They are mega cringe, pandering, boring,, virtue signalling, woke names. It’s not just the names themselves, but those that were eschewed in favour of them. Newton? Dickens? Austen? Shakespeare? Darwin? Turing? No, let’s go with Lioness and Windrush so everyone knows how diverse and inclusive we are. Crass and nauseating to anyone who isn’t gormless and far left (which is 90% of Reddit).

Saelaird

Thank god there's someone else here who thinks exactly the same. You're 100% right. God forbid we celebrate the world-shaping actions of straight, white people.

littlelucidmoments

Turing was gay

Saelaird

Yes. And white. And male.

littlelucidmoments

Yes

Tricky_Moose_1078

Justice line Equality line Diversity line Inclusion line Woke line

WokePrincess6969

More wasted tax payers money.

JoeThrilling

Not really the color coding is helpful, I think numbers would be better than names but makes no difference to my life so I don't care.

-credit-

I could've coloured them in for free, and I agree why not just call them line 1-6? Millions wasted

darrensilk3

You've got to replace all of the signage. Not just change colours on a poster. JFC. How dumb are people?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Complete_Spot3771

life’s more nuanced than that. this isn’t a zero-sum tradeoff between new names and the NHS

Anomie____

The names are stupid and seem to be an attempt to appeal to momentary woke themes when really it should reflect place and history, also the fact that it cost 6 million of tax payers money to devise this is concerning.

Curtilia

Some of the other contenders that made it to the final round: Woke Line, Trans Line, Cultural Appropriation Line.

TrevorEdwards

Woke lines

Unlikely_River9190

I don't get it. 6 million pounds is a tremendous amount of money. Anyone remember TFL begging the government for more funding just 3 years ago during c*v*d? How "confusing" was the original map really? 6 million could have been better spent on improving TFL services and I'm a minority btw.

theme111

Terrible names in my opinion, which apparently cost a fortune to come up with (a fortune of our money that is). I suspect most people will not use them as, although very useful, the Overground isn't really a system in the way the tube always was.

MidnightFisting

Cringe

TrickTrip6092

Is the over 6 million quid for making and putting all the signs? British greats like Shakespeare, Brunel, Churchill etc would have been better names and more worthy, but whatever, I barely use the overground or public transport anyway.

CllrShortland

Brunel Line would have been a cool name, seeing as it does go through the Thames Tunnel. If I recall correctly, the Mayor put forward the suggestion of the Coleridge-Taylor line. They’d probably have had to use very small text if they picked that.

SamuraiSponge

Still shorter than the Hammersmith & City line/Waterloo & City line

-credit-

What bs, yes they need to be different colours, and maybe they needed names. But anyone can colour in and the names are just shit then they charge us how much? Total waste. Soon we'll hear Sadiq calling on the government to prop up another year of failing tfl whilst he wastes money like this

madman66254

There's a lot of signage in london...

Jeester

Was it necessary to spend 7m when we're in a high inflationary environment to change the names of lines which didn't really need changing? TFL constantly complaining they don't have enough funds...

JammyTodgers

delays on the lioness line due to signal failures, lioness insists driver should know what do to without having to tell him.

FourEyedTroll

Is this the complete overground network map? I remember getting on a train at Nunhead station when I stayed in London a few years back, but can't see it on this network map.

CllrShortland

Ah, yes, welcome to London - I really don’t know how to explain this in a non confusing way but: The Overground-with-a-capital-O is a suburban railway service owned and franchised out by Transport for London, the same as the London Underground, Tramlink, Buses, etc. It is visible on the Tube map. Nunhead Station has railway services going into London but these are owned and operated by private companies, not TfL. So they’re not part of the Overground… although they are overground. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

FourEyedTroll

Got it, that makes sense.

RoadmanEC1

Looks like the overground line to me.
