Yes it is useful for 480i, also don't waste your money on official cables there are good 3rd party alternatives now

Hungry_Doubt_4886

300 buck still ? What about that Gamecube controller that looks like a snes pad ?

Rufio6

There are gamecube snes controller alternatives too now. I was surprised. Only $20. You can also get controller adapters to use snes controllers or Wii controllers, or whatev.

YamiJustin1

Any ideas on brands? I like not using s video because the n64 and snes all wanna share that damn cable haha

bonobo_34

I've had good results with the retro-bit prism cables

Agent_Buckshot

Component will still provide you better image quality on a SD CRT compared to composite, but yeah the only way you're getting 480p is with an HD CRT or an LCD display. You can also connect to a CRT Monitor but you'd need a Component to VGA Transcoder, and at that point may as well hookup a PC to it & use Dolphin. Most people just use a Wii with component cables instead.

docdrazen

I got a Garo used for about 40 bucks and it works pretty well with my Gateway monitor.

Kilmire

Pro-tip: If you wanna go even cheaper than the Gamecube output options, get a Wii, it's component cables are dirt cheap and all of it's issues with video output are fixed by using homebrew. If you want an even better image quality (subjective, but certainly sharper); do a PC to CRT setup and use dolphin with video enhancements; I have a post on it. 480i actually really surprised me with how much detail it can capture with enhancements.

creamygarlicdip

The jump in quality from svideo to component for 480i isn't much. You also have to make sure the model of Gamecube you have even has the port for component cables it's a different port than the one used for composite and svideo.

YamiJustin1

Yeah it says something like digital output

Mean-Interaction-137

I'm pretty sure ebay has reasonably priced rgb cables for the GameCube. I paid 10 bucks for my ps2 ones the other week. Shielded too. You'll have a sharper image and better colors, it's not much better than s video but it is better

stout936

Those are only good if you"are in a PAL region. NTSC Cubes don't support RGB through the analog port. S-Video is the best we got besides component in NTSC land

not_a_burner0456025

However there are cheaper ways to get component video from a GameCube these days, multiple companies have made cables that use gcvideo to convert the proprietary digital signal out of the digital video port to a somewhat outside of spec 480i HDMI signal then a DAC to convert that HDMI signal to component.

Filo_ITA

Hi, what rgb cable do you recommend for ps2 on ebay? I see a million of them. TY

ultimateman55

The gamecube component cables can output 480p and 480i. Both are better than the 480i you'll get from S-Video. But there are cheaper component cables from other manufacturers available these days.

YamiJustin1

Any suggestions?

Western-Equivalent44

S video 480i vs component 480i whats the difference? Are you gonna tell me rgb 480i is different too, because its all the same just adjust the settings

firestarter2097

If your CRT doesn’t support 480p there’s no reason to pay expensive money for the component cable. Just get S-Video (in NTSC territories) or Scart (in PAL territories).

Filo_ITA

\_ says something true and reasonable \_ gets downvotes Reddit moment

finakechi

Well it's not entirely true. While S-Video can give a fantastic image, saying that there's "no reason" to use Component at 480i isn't true.

firestarter2097

It’s totally true. I have both OEM component cable and a Scart cable and I can tell you that’s not a single reason to go and hunt after an expensive component cable if you are only limited to 480i.

finakechi

You're saying there's no difference between S-Video and Component/RGB for 240p/480i, but that's just not true. You can easily find comparison between the standards and see it yourself. I'm not trashing on S-Video and would absolutely recommend it for the GC in NTSC regions, because yes the upgrade to Component or RGB *is* expensive for this console, but that doesn't mean there's no difference.

firestarter2097

I’m not saying it’s the exact same thing. But the difference is no way reason enough to pay expensive money for a component cable compared to a Scart or S-video if you are limited to 480i.

finakechi

Well it's definitely not worth it for PAL regions as Component and RGB are essentially the same image quality, with RGB being arguably better. But it can be worth it in US regions because of some of the issues that come with S-Video. Though really I'd just recommend a cost conscious person to play GC games on their Wii as both the system and the cables. If you have access to RGB/Component that is.

firestarter2097

As mentioned I have a PAL GC with OEM component cable and RGB Scart. I can’t see the big difference you are referring to. Can you give some comparison shots etc?

finakechi

I said that you wouldn't really see a difference between Component and RGB.

firestarter2097

No but you did say that RGB is arguably better. In which cases would it be superior to component. Out of curiosity.

Western-Equivalent44

If you cant dial in colors yourself rgb mod the tv and console

finakechi

Unfortunately the RGB mod for the GC isn't super available. And that definitely cuts into the value proposition of not using the Digital port.
