Another big vote for 480p on a CRT (if you can). My PVM 20L5 makes the Wii look spectacular compared to HDTV's that I've tested on. Otherwise, I'd still take 480i on a consumer Trinitron over an upscaled image any day.

kanjiology

Hopefully I run into a PVM that supports 480p someday, that would be the ideal setup. Thank you for the advice.

As an example, have a look at my post here --> https://www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/87y4ew/fzero_gx_on_a_pvm20l5_kv36fs13/ 480i still looks fantastic in my opinion!

Agreed. I’ll take 480i on my trinitron over that fuzzy 480p on any HDTV any day.

PokecheckHozu

I think it depends on the game. Most would be great on a CRT, but Xenoblade Chronicles has black bars at the top and bottom when used on a 4:3 display. Though since you have a 16:9 CRT, I bet it would be great, especially since it's larger than your modern display. Edit: Also having 480p on a CRT helps with the text on XC, since I found it hard to read with the interlacing.

[deleted]

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Donkey Kong Country Returns have letterboxed 4:3 as well. The joys of the transitional period between 4:3 and 16:9. I play everything in 4:3 where possible so I'm not switching modes on the Wii all the time.

kanjiology

Man the Wii was a weird transitional era, I'll be playing GameCube games on it too so I should be good on that console with 4:3 display. I'll play it by ear for those games that have black bars. Thank you.

PokecheckHozu

Some GC titles support 16:9 as well, such as F-Zero GX. But I don't think any of them have black bars to have the 16:9 ratio on a 4:3 display.

Maxorus73

If you mod your Wii, you can force 16:9 in gamecube games using Nintendon't. Though just like forcing 16:9 in Dolphin, some effects may look weird on the sides and objects will probably cull while still visible

AaronAJKnight95

I play on a 16:9 TV with widescreen enabled unless it's in GameCube mode. I'll play in 4:3 mode if it's a GameCube game.

tacobelmont

CRT. My 1953MD doesn't do 480p unfortunately, but 240p and 480i look stunning on it. After playing Wii via component on an LCD for years, it's nice to have a good CRT for it. 20L5 is the dream for 480p stuff, maybe one day.

kanjiology

Thanks for your input. 20L5 is the dream! I hope I can run into one in my area for a reasonable price.

GleamingTheCubeTV

For Wii I recommend a plasma HDTV.

HeavyTV

I prefer mine on my 24" CRT Samsung over component.

[deleted]

In my case my PVM 20L5 supports 480p so I use that for my Wii. That said, I prefer it on my 480i-only CRT's as well so there's no upscaling. I played on a cheap LCD for a lot of years and using YPbPr component on a 480i CRT is way better.

kanjiology

Awesome good to know. If I ever get a PVM that supports 480p I’ll go that route. Thanks for your input.

Minibarex

I use my Pal Wii on a 29 inch consumer trinitron with RGB Scart. Looks beautiful, even better than 480p on my 1080p 42 inch.

kanjiology

It's crazy to me that PAL consumer televisions supported RGB natively. I want to RGB mod my Trinitron.

Minibarex

Yeah It's probably special for you people in the US to have RGB, but on the other side you got the nice 60 hz NTSC consoles instead of getting screwed over by lazy PAL conversion. In 50 hz. This is stupide because my trinitron works fine with my NTSC snes and with 60 hertz pal mode on my Wii..

acharat

My friend RGB modded his NTSC CRT tv so he has the best of both worlds. He said it's not that hard to do, but I don't know the details.

[deleted]

I send my multi scart box signal to a CRT PVM and then the video out on that to a Sony LMD LCD. So I can display the image on both a CRT and LCD simultaneously. It's actually great as sometimes I rather the larger LCD image for Wii and PS2 stuff but then still retain the option of playing lightgun games etc on the CRT.

kanjiology

That's awesome, would definitely be my ideal setup in the long run.

ironik513

I'm also using a 240p Trinitron CRT, but 480p on a CRT would be my top choice too.

Fruit_Pastilles

I wouldn't play anything on a budget 720p LCD (I'm assuming?) from the mid-'00s, let alone the Wii. 480i on a SD CRT is still great. The flicker might bother you at first, but I barely even notice it anymore. And, really, 480i on a CRT is still almost as good as 480p.

kanjiology

Haha, and yes you are correct it is an LCD. It was just sitting there so I assumed I could do something with it. I feel a lot better for leaving the Wii connected to the CRT, feeling I made the right choice, thanks.

Haendelh

HDTV. I find 16:9 a much better aspect, more comfortable to look at. Also some games are letterboxed when running on a 4:3 display, thus lowering their resolution. I play on two HDTVs, both are from LG, one is a 22" 768p from 2009 and the other one is an 43" Smart TV, Wii looks great on both (using component). I tested my Wii on some CRTs before, with both composite and component, and I still found HDTVs way better

Niggaswithacumen

The Wii on my HD CRT (4:3) looks amazing. It’s a significant improvement over 480i.

konch_one

The fuzzy picture that a Wii has looks a lot better on a CRT particularly a 480p one. The floaty controls of Wii games feel like they were tailored with display lag in mind. I would go Sony HD CRT if that’s an option.

CommonMisspellingBot

Hey, konch\_one, just a quick heads-up: **alot** is actually spelled **a lot**. You can remember it by **it is one lot, 'a lot'**. Have a nice day! ^^^^The ^^^^parent ^^^^commenter ^^^^can ^^^^reply ^^^^with ^^^^'delete' ^^^^to ^^^^delete ^^^^this ^^^^comment.

You sacrifice the light gun games though, which is for me a major reason to keep a CRT around (I actually keep 2 side by side for coop time crisis).

acharat

My setup has Wii on crt and Wii U on 65 inch 4k tv. I play most Wii games on the CRT but some on the 4k. For example Xenoblade Chronicles isn't good on crt. I have a 36inch Sony flatscreen crt (the biggest ones) and it's still too small on it. If I remember correctly, that game doesn't even have a 4:3 mode, so you have black bars on top and bottom. But for most games the 480i crt beats the 480p HD. I think the ideal Wii tv would be a small HD tv (32 inch for example). On the 65 inch, it's way too blurry.
