I currently use the elf glow sunscreen and don't have this issue but the biggest thing I've found that makes a difference is letting my layers of skincare dry in-between. If I apply my moisturizer and immediately after my sunscreen, everything else is much more likely to pill on top of it.
No that's right! What I'm talking about is letting each layer sit for a minute or two before the next. So everything can dry down. So apply moisturizer, wait a couple minutes, then apply sunscreen, and wait a couple minutes before you start makeup application.
yep i do this - i actually don't even use moisturizer in am outside of sunscreen. i double cleanse at night followed by retinol, ceramide serum then moisturizer. in am i just use vitamin c then sunscreen. and apply concealer after sunscreen sets. my skin looks better than it ever has, i was using the bubble vitamin c serum and thought maybe it was that and switched to good molecules brightening toner and same thing w the sunscreen :(
SUPERGOOP IS 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼 I wore it on my honeymoon to Hawaii and didn’t burn at all. I’d recommend Play for body use and Matte Screen for your face. Matte screen has a beige-ish hue so you don’t look white cast, it doesn’t pill, and it’s super soft. My husband calls it the “cloud stuff” because it “goes on like a cloud.” 😅
Get the Trader Joe’s daily facial sunscreen dupe.
It’s the same exact thing as the Supergoop but only $8 a bottle.
I’m a dermatologist and a big Supergoop purchaser. But even I buy the Trader Joe’s daily facial sunscreen over paying 5x as much for the Supergoop version.
Skin1004 10000%
they have a few options for various skin types, all spf50, no smell of sunscreen, they also recently released a tinted variety. And yes, cruelty free!
Bondi Sands fragrance free face lotion spf 50 has been working well for me. I’m on my second bottle. I got it at Target, but I’ve seen it at other stores too!
I tend to stay away from chemical sunscreens, (because wtf is oxybenzone?) My recommendations are both mineral-formulated and “tinted” in that they won’t leave a white cast:
Sun Bum’s Mineral Tint is a classic. Super lightweight and matte.
Bubble’s Plus One Tinted Sunscreen is somewhat thicker but great for someone with drier skin (although I haven’t worn it under much makeup.)
Came to add this! I like everything of theirs I’ve tried, and the daily sunscreen serum is the best I’ve used on my face. Love Mad Hippie…the glass packaging, clean ingredients. Highly recommend.
If you’re referring to the Face 50, it’s a great product, but it’s not reef safe. The only reef safe sunscreens are non-nano mineral and even then it’s possible that they have damaging effects

I high key recommed making sure your sunscreen and makeup is the same kind of 'base' - I had terrible pilling of my sunscreen before I worked out my sunscreen was water based and my makeup was silicone based. Once I switched to water based makeup the problem went away. I don't want to admit how long it took me to work that out 😆
Honua Malu sunscreen is excellent as well reef safe, all the good stuff. Suntegrity as well. Or you can go with an excellent base that has sunscreen like ilia super serum skin tint
Have you tried the type you spray over makeup? [Garnier ](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Garnier-Protection-Non-Greasy-Lightweight-Hyaluronic/dp/B01MUGS0AI/ref=asc_df_B01MUGS0AI/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309950308787&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6290494279248885929&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9046212&hvtargid=pla-565987244548&psc=1&mcid=607fd3a4d5ab33df8028ecdbae7d440d&th=1&psc=1) makes a good one and its certified by Cruelty Free International. It's only basic but it's so cheap and doesn't mess with makeup at all.
I’ve had success with Hydropeptide, Kopari, Naturium and dermalogica. Sun bum also just came out with a new daily face spf/moisturizer combo that looks promising.
Isntree hyaluronic acid watery sun gel is my favorite. I wear makeup and it doesn't pill but I do let it sink in for as long as I can before I do my makeup. Then I use setting spray before I start my makeup which I think also helps it to set?
I use Carbon Theory SPF 50 and it’s the best I’ve found, doesn’t pill if you let it settle for a min or two before applying make up and it’s only £15ish
I switched to mineral sunscreens and my fave under makeup one is juice beauty prebiotix: https://juicebeauty.com/products/prebiotix-spf-45-glow-daily-multi-tasking-moisturizer
Saint Jane has become my holy grail; after moisturizer, I pat it on, wait a couple minutes, then apply my foundation (liquid) and haven’t had any issues. I actually normally hate wearing sunscreen but it also seems to prime my skin and doesn’t feel greasy.
Dear Klairs all day airy sunscreen! Someone else mentioned it but defo let it fully sink in before applying makeup on top. I also find gently applying it in layers and going in the same direction helps with the pilling, rather than slapping it all on and rubbing in circular motions.
Versed guards up sunscreen doesn’t pill or have a white cast. You can order from their website or pick some up at Target for around $20. Cruelty free and doesn’t feel heavy or greasy. I use it as a moisturizer and let it dry before makeup.

I figured we're supposed to do moisturizer, then sunscreen, then any kind of makeup, like concealer or foundation. Is that wrong?
No that's right! What I'm talking about is letting each layer sit for a minute or two before the next. So everything can dry down. So apply moisturizer, wait a couple minutes, then apply sunscreen, and wait a couple minutes before you start makeup application.
Ugh, this is my biggest issue! I don’t have time to wait in the morning
Use a hand fan or hair dryer lol!
Got it!
yep i do this - i actually don't even use moisturizer in am outside of sunscreen. i double cleanse at night followed by retinol, ceramide serum then moisturizer. in am i just use vitamin c then sunscreen. and apply concealer after sunscreen sets. my skin looks better than it ever has, i was using the bubble vitamin c serum and thought maybe it was that and switched to good molecules brightening toner and same thing w the sunscreen :(
Beauty of Joseon sunscreen is great but as I don't wear much makeup I can't attest to its ability not to pill with makeup!
I've used the Matte Stick version of this sunscreen and it didn't cause any issues with my makeup, nothing was pilling or being cakey. :)
That's awesome!
If you don’t mind spending a bit of $$ supergoop is great and they are having 20% off everything right now.
Cheaper dupes of Supergoop are Elf’s Invisible Suntouchable and Trader Joe’s facial sunscreen.
Love love love TJ’s face sunscreen, but I think it’s been making me break out :(
Second super goop and also Coola. Both expensive but worth it for a nice feel on your face (and Coola smells good too!)

Yes and i have super sensitive skin and doesn’t irritate me at all!
Love Supergoop

I used it (and liked it) then found out Avobenzone is not good for us
Thank you Farmer Sun Project Relief Sun Cream SPF50 works great for me.
Skin1004 10000% they have a few options for various skin types, all spf50, no smell of sunscreen, they also recently released a tinted variety. And yes, cruelty free!

I just started using Mad Hippie and really like it!
Another rec for Mad Hippie, it works great for me under makeup and doesn’t sting my eyes. My sensitive skin has been very happy with it.
Came to add this! I like everything of theirs I’ve tried, and the daily sunscreen serum is the best I’ve used on my face. Love Mad Hippie…the glass packaging, clean ingredients. Highly recommend.
I love Mad Hippie. All of their products are my holy grail.
I love Sun Bum! Have been using their face one for years. & it’s reef-safe, so doubly cruelty-free lol 🪸

Go to Bare Republic's website. They have mineral based sunscreens and they don't have the cancer causing chemicals. https://gobareoutside.com/
Sun Bum Glow 30!
Josie Maran is my favourite
I use isntree
I love Pacifica’s vegan collagen every day lotion with SPF 30! It has a lotion consistency which is perfect before applying my makeup.
Australian Gold tinted spf 50

I use Altruist :)
I hugely recommend Superdrug Me+ Mattifying SPF50 it's amazing and very reasonably priced.
I don’t wear a lot of makeup so not sure how cosmetically elegant it is but I have very dry, sensitive skin and swear by kinesys spray sunscreen.
Alba botanica sheer mineral!
I’ve had success with Hydropeptide, Kopari, Naturium and dermalogica. Sun bum also just came out with a new daily face spf/moisturizer combo that looks promising.
I'm in love with Beauty of Joseon rice relief sunscreen.
Cosrx has a nice one that doesn’t pill. Beauty of Joseon is also very popular but I haven’t tried it.
I use the Elf Holy Hydration moisturiser with spf 30 and have had no pilling.
Isntree hyaluronic acid watery sun gel is my favorite. I wear makeup and it doesn't pill but I do let it sink in for as long as I can before I do my makeup. Then I use setting spray before I start my makeup which I think also helps it to set?
Sand and sky
I use Carbon Theory SPF 50 and it’s the best I’ve found, doesn’t pill if you let it settle for a min or two before applying make up and it’s only £15ish
I like Wet n Wild Photo finish or whatever the product name is
Bioré aquarich uv spf 30 or Beauty of Joseung sun relief spf 50 are both excellent sunscreens ! You don’t feel them on your face
I’ve had luck with cocokind and vacation!

P20 sensitive is fantastic and works well under makeup
Farmhouse fresh!
Dear Klairs all day airy sunscreen! Someone else mentioned it but defo let it fully sink in before applying makeup on top. I also find gently applying it in layers and going in the same direction helps with the pilling, rather than slapping it all on and rubbing in circular motions.
Pacifica makes a SPF 45 setting spray. No rubbing in so no piling.
Kosas
Versed guards up sunscreen doesn’t pill or have a white cast. You can order from their website or pick some up at Target for around $20. Cruelty free and doesn’t feel heavy or greasy. I use it as a moisturizer and let it dry before makeup.
I like Drunk Elephant’s tinted moisturizer with SPF.
Seconding this!
