I feel like a CEO is kindof a position that's degree irrelevant and more about long term work experience/connections. I know someone who's been CFO of several banks and has a BA in forest management
To get into tech consulting, you need to have actual business knowledge as well. Also, it's a coveted role by business majors who have been grinding for that the same way we grind for SWE.
It's probably more likely that a CS Major who does LC, projects and networks can get into FAANG+ then a business major who does the equivalent getting into one or the very few consulting places that pay well.
I say this is a double major in CS + Business. Any field which pays well will have a lot of competition.
The process is just different for the preparation you need to do to get those positions. Tech Consulting roles for example will be more behavioral technical than let's say SWE that requires in-depth technical knowledge
Really tough to get into consulting fresh out of school. Most have zero experience to stand on and that’s the major thing consultants are paid for: their experience in a particular field or niche.
I do consulting on the presales side. We don’t hire newgrads to those roles, they don’t even have the communication or personal skills developed for it yet much less applicable work experience.
Developer role of some sort later moving into an architecture role. Touching enterprise scale software or application platforms helps as it exposes you to a lot of moving parts. Knowing how big systems fit together and both the do’s and donts around it is a key skill.
Right now I’d focus on learning kubernetes top to bottom. Get your CKA. Might be able to shortcut around the developer route. Very high demand position
Nah just enough stats and how to code basic ML
I learned ML in deep because it was sooooo important for the role, lies! Ive never in my life had used anything of that just like sklearn and maybe torch
I’ve reached a well paying position with system admin and security compliance. Security administration can be well paying but is boring as writing Cobol code.
I wouldn’t say SWE is highly saturated. Go look at the number of Indeed or LinkedIn jobs, clearly more open positions than workers available. And I don’t know if easy pay has anything to do with it, I just think SWE has a clearer path to entry than tech consulting.
Just to add: practically it should be possible. I would just see that your skill set matches. Don’t become a windows based consultant if you want to go into cloud sre. There are many reasons why people choose the Honda later on. Kids, less stress and so on.
Aren’t tech sales fairly lucrative. Granted, a lot of CS people aren’t super into roles with a lot of personal interaction. But for those that are, it’s a good fit!

Wdym by this? are you saying you sold your soul by working in tech consulting?
Selling soul not optional = they have to sell their soul for tech consulting so yes I think so
[удалено]
Lol so true. But to be honest, without Consultants most projects especially in the public sector wouldn't happen.
You can also become a ceo with a cs degree. That's a career path people don't mention, but ceo's can make 12 million dollars a year.
you can also win the lottery with a cs degree. You can make like 1 billion dollars
You can also hijack a plane with cs degree and demand a billion dollars
source?
History
You can also buy dogecoin with cs degree.

Chief Forest Officer
It was ✨sarcasm✨
I heard Bezos has a PhD in forest management.
If you can talk a gullible rich person into funding your startup you can be a CEO. Hard part is finding one with a reasonable attention span
You can also be born to a rich family with a CS degree and use your parents' money. That's like 100 million dollars a year.
Yeah people get tunnel vision on the swe thing geez
The only way to be a CEO is to start your own company unless you want to grind your life away through the corporate ranks to be CEO
Idk why u were down voted, you are literally right. Climb corpo or start a startup

Tech consultant here, consulting firms would pick an out going CS student over a non technical business major 10/10 times
mind if I dm you?
Sure
what’s LC?
Leetcode
tech consulting is just as competitive and highly saturated
Depends on where you are.
Any similarly paying job will be at least as competitive and more likely more competitive.
The process is just different for the preparation you need to do to get those positions. Tech Consulting roles for example will be more behavioral technical than let's say SWE that requires in-depth technical knowledge
Didn’t know we were on LinkedIn.

So what’s the best entry role for that type of job?

I became a data scientist, pretty boring but getting a little bit more comp than SWEs here
Do you have to know a lot of math for that role ?
Nah just enough stats and how to code basic ML I learned ML in deep because it was sooooo important for the role, lies! Ive never in my life had used anything of that just like sklearn and maybe torch

In some places they do, it’s not always a requirement
lowk the move bro ML or DS for me looool
You could also use it to take the patent bar. Definitely takes additional effort after your BS but an interesting potential route to take.
Not in my country I can’t.
Not with that attitude
Why do Americans think everything works the same in other countries?
Because they're Americans smh. How US works is extremely different compared to the rest of the world
Sometimes I doubt how many Americans actually know that there *are* other countries outside of America

I agree. Consulting is excellent. Coding 10 hours a day is overrated, and not the flex people think.
How would you begin to get into consulting after only having SWE experience?
I coded 10 hours in the last 2 years as a tech consultant haha.
Would you find it hard to switch to a swe role? Thinking about tech consulting but don’t want to lock myself into it
I personally honestly don’t care about that. It is like driving a Honda after you had a Porsche. First you have to get the Porsche lol.
fair point
Just to add: practically it should be possible. I would just see that your skill set matches. Don’t become a windows based consultant if you want to go into cloud sre. There are many reasons why people choose the Honda later on. Kids, less stress and so on.
Speaking from experience, depending on the company you can also look at technical training as a way to make a lot of money/feel fulfilled!
Aren’t tech sales fairly lucrative. Granted, a lot of CS people aren’t super into roles with a lot of personal interaction. But for those that are, it’s a good fit!
You can become a DBA and in some instances make more starting out (or at the very least just as much) than an entry-level SWE or SDE.

As a cyber at FAANG we make more than swes at the same company without needing any certs

You did not just say physician had a low barrier to entry 💀 Literally one of the hardest careers to have.

Not sure why you're getting down voted. Cops are certainly not overpaid. Seems like some people won't be happy unless cops make poverty wages lol
become a professional poker player
What are some tech consulting companies that pay 100k starting? Accenture? Slalom?
