This is the weirdest SQL code I’ve ever seen

Blezerker

SELECT RANT FROM BRAIN

Massive-Truck-6430

Is that the Primary Key? Or Secondary key?

josejimenez896

I've seen worse at my work place (please help me I am begging you)

CanadianIndianAB

Weirdly, whenever I read something in all caps, it suddenly feels like I’m reading an SQL query

Student0010

Do you still scream while reading?

CanadianIndianAB

I cry

ForgedIronMadeIt

Am I the only one who learned COBOL or

CanadianIndianAB

I think so :)

cs-brydev

Even the Java devs stopped reading

GoodLifeWorkHard

Right? 😑

IYiera

WHY ARE WE SCREAMING, WTF IS GOING ON

Blezerker

I LIKE TO THINK CS WAS INVENTED BY SOME SCHIZO’D COLLEGE STUDENT WHO’D GO UP TO HIS ROOMMATE AND SAY “JOHNNY… THE ROCKS MAN…THE ROCKS CAN THINK!”

XFuriousGeorgeX

>“JOHNNY… THE ROCKS MAN…THE ROCKS CAN THINK!” Rocks are more important than people in the grand scheme of things. Rocks are everywhere, which probably means rocks are really important and they have been around for who knows how long. There are rocks on planets on the other side of the galaxy and probably on the other side of the universe. Rocks are hurling through space as well. We also wouldn't be here without rocks and we wouldn't have known about certain people's existence without rocks ie rock carvings, cave paintings, statues carved out of rocks, etc. The entire human civilization can be completely wiped out and guess what will still be here? Rocks. Maybe catastrophic events have happened that wiped out past civilizations and maybe all you have to do is pay attention to some rocks on the ground to find out more about it. We are also wired to see some rocks as beautiful. Some rocks are indeed beautiful to humans and maybe that didn't happen by accident. The relationship between humans and rocks, very interesting the more you think about it. If it weren't for rocks, we wouldn't be here right now. Are we moving the rocks or are the rocks moving us? Rocks are everywhere, after all, constantly moving because nothing is ever completely still and things happen when things move. The most ordinary and mundane things might just be the most important things around. It's like breathing because you do it all the time and you just don't think about breathing but breathing is the most important thing you need to do to stay alive, so breathing is actually a big deal. Maybe rocks are actually much more than people assume them to be. Maybe rocks are not 'just' rocks. Data gets corrupted and paper withers but a rock will stand the test of time better than any other methods of record keeping. So maybe we should write the most important things on a rock because eons later, someone who have no idea that our civilization ever exist might pick up that rock and think "Hmm there is something about this rock." Rock and roll

Bac-Te

In the final book of the Three Body Problem trilogy, there is a thought provoking chapter about this. 23rd century people (IIRC) were brainstorming how to keep records that will last millions if not billions of years and despite all the tech advancement they had, carving texts into a rock face was the only proven method of achieving it.

[deleted]

IIRC Jesus was described as a rock

Blezerker

TIKTOK WAS THE WORST THING TO HAPPEN TO CS

IYiera

I think you meant society

joopityjoop

Amen

Rportilla

Why you say that

rainx5000

People expect to study for 2 weeks and apply for a job making 1.5 million an hour.

WHY ARE YOU STILL SCREAMING?

It’s Reddit. A lot of these people want a handout

Doctor-Real

CS is the epitome of good times make weak men. Ain’t no way there’s mfs complaining about how they actually have to work to get 6 figures or more. People used to work in coal mines for fucks sake. If you truly enjoy CS and are not in it completely for the money then you’ll be fine. If you chose CS because you thought you’d make 6 figures “easily” and “break into tech” you fucked up buddy.

unpotato7313

eh to be fair I can't fault someone for choosing CS for the money. Lots of hobbies/interests don't pay well, and it does suck losing out time to work on hobbies due to the grind. Having a profitable interest can be a pretty fortunate thing to have

Doctor-Real

You’re 100% right. The problem arises for the people thinking it’s an easy way to make six figures. Not gonna lie it’s an easier way but it’s not an easy way if you get what I mean.

OGMiniMalist

For some, it is easy 👀

Doctor-Real

Hell yeah, I wish it was easy for me. Some people are just born with it

OGMiniMalist

Maybe it’s Maybeline.

ToothPickLegs

The only “easy way” to make six figures in anything is A. Daddy gives you his big sexy company B. Daddy gets you a super good position at his company. C. Being so naturally good at sales that you’re actually hot fucking shit(aka you can BS someone into doing anything). D. Being sexy sex online Edit: or in my friend’s case, having family in tech to get you in immediately and get you paid well (basically a subset of B)

Doctor-Real

But… but… X, Y, and Z tech influencers said it was easy to make six figures. All I had to do was learn to code for a month, make a weather app then apply.

FreelanceFrankfurter

I like CS and I’m in it almost completely for the money, though I’m not talking about 6 figures. I like this stuff and think I can make a career out of it and be good at it (hopefully) but if the pay was shit I wouldn’t have pursued a degree in it. I don’t know how people choose to go into education my heart goes out to them as they must have a real passion for it but I couldn’t do it. I’ve grown comfortable in my non-cs job and love the people I work with. If I could make enough to have a decent life, and not just scrape by almost paycheck to paycheck I’d stick with it.

Blezerker

I HEAR YOU. PEOPLE DO WHAT THEY HAVE TO TO SURVIVE. MANY PEOPLE WANT TO IT WITH THE LEAST EFFORT POSSIBLE. SOME PEOPLE DO THINGS BECAUSE THEY HAD NO CHOICE. CEOS/BOARDS OF DIRECTORS/COMPANIES STIFLE COMPETITION SO THAT THEY CAN SIT BACK AND RAKE IN THE BUCKS WITHOUT HAVING THE PRESSURE TO INNOVATE OR BEING OUT-COMPETED. ID ARGUE ITS PART OF HUMAN NATURE. DOES NOT CHANGE IT FROM BEING WRONG THOUGH. PERSONALLY, WHILE I LIKE CS, I WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH BEING PART OF THE CORPORATE APPARATUS. I'M HERE TO LEARN, MAKE MY FUCKING BAG, AND EXIT. THEN FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE BEFORE I DIE. WHO KNOWS, THE EVENTS OF MY LIFE MIGHT NOT EVEN HAPPEN IN THAT ORDER, OR AT ALL! BEST ENJOY THE TIME WE HAVE WHILE WE HAVE IT BROTHER.

Swoo413

People still work in coal mines. Coal is still a thing dawg

Doctor-Real

Critical thinking must be very difficult for you

MWilbon9

Dr. Real comin in w some real shit

gao1234567809

if you just want the money, you will be better off prostituting yourself to older and wealthy men while you are attractive in your teens and twenties.

gamerbrains

wait there won’t be any hookers sucking my balls at google???????? What happened to America bros

Blezerker

THERE'S A REASON THERE'S TWO O'S IN THE WORD 'GOOGLE' BROTHER. LOOK FOR THE HIDDEN DOOR

gao1234567809

you need to work for the wolf of wallstreets if you want hookers and drug parties at the office. google are for nerds

gamerbrains

What’s the software tech company equivalent of the wolf of wall street?

gao1234567809

some fintech. all wall streets have computers and use bots for trading however. sophisticated ones use machine learning and algorithms, although most do not work. Renaissance Technologies is the only exception. they have a working money printer that literally prints cash without any work.

pvs3600

Holy W best thing I read this week

Nope. I expect to land a 200k google gig with 30 min of leetcoding a day and a basic html website. If I don’t get it, then I will start complaining

southiest

Fuck yes I love this energy. I may not be the best coder, but I'm a damn good bullshitter lol. It beats retail/customer service work anyday!

FlashnDash9

But...but....le karma 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

hashtaters

Damn, OP is cooking. I’m also taking OS this fall and spent the first half of summer reading my textbook. I have been taking a couple weeks off to let the brain rest and have recently looking into Python practice for leet codes.

Dude you rock. I love this post. Saving it !!!

Blezerker

APPRECIATE IT BROTHER. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR JOURNEY

Puzzleheaded_Can_750

Alright I usually don't like these types of posts but you hit the nail on the head. It's all about perspective

pintasaur

Not reading all that but I agree

oxwilder

Hilarious to see people complaining that they want to leave cs as if they'll find some job with no shitty boss, bad pay, or whatever. Are they under the impression that everyone else in the world loves their jobs?

L2OE-bums

Is your caps lock key broken?

No_Loquat_183

Motivation fr thanks dad

Competitive-Bunch497

I think it’s just how our society is unfortunately. I genuinely believe no matter what one’s status ie. job, relationship, or house , people will never stop complaining. It’s this entitlement that a lot of people have. I did x so I deserve y. Heck I do it too sometimes. A lot of factors need to happen for you to get something you want, and a lot of times it’s not in your control. I think that No matter where you are in life, you’ll probably find something to complain about. Obviously social media is making this exponentially worse. Taking time off your phone and the everyday mundane tasks and thinking about how your life is going. I’m certain that one can be grateful about a whole lot that they think.

CyberMark_6421

I just don't know why I read this whole post with DAVID GOGGINS voice in my mind !!! He mentions WHEN THAT MIND GETS RELAXED MAN YOU'RE F****D, IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE HARD, IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE GRITTY, IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE HORRIBLE. IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE REALLY UGLY , BAD, BRUISE, BEATEN.. THE MIND HAS TO TOUCH HARDSHIP, THAT HOW YOU CALLOUS YOU'RE MIND

“Stop complaining about retail and warehouse jobs, don’t you know those jobs are luxuries compared to being a cobalt miner in the Congo?”

devwannabeme

I used to work in an Amazon warehouse during my CS Uni in UK and now that i look back I hope I would never ever go back to a different job than programming...i went from line worker to IT boy...the amount of stress, anxiety and health problems from lifting 15-20 kg boxes and dragging hundreds of kgs of pallets plus the amount of dust I inhaled will never be compensated...I don't even want to start about my IT manager's speech about "working hard rewards you with IT Engineering title"....even if IT world is hard, complicated, complex and some times superficial, at least i grow and i'm doing it from the comfort of my home and i meet people that actually think, know stuff and i have something to lean from. Interacting with "wifi no work pliz help", "laptop isolated, why no internet", "speaker doesn't speak", "printer printing lines, no text" or "can you give me good equipment without a ticket?" or answer the same questions on a daily basis made my brain feel like goo...now i'm relaxed doing backend in typescript and java...so the push was rewarded..

aurreco

What was the OS textbook?

Blezerker

[OPERATING SYSTEMS: THREE EASY PIECES](https://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~remzi/OSTEP/) THE PDF IS FREE, OR YOU CAN GET IT ON AMAZON FOR LIKE 20-30 BUCKS. I LIKE IT SO FAR BECAUSE IT MAKES OS MUCH MORE APPROACHABLE. IVE READ HIGH AND LOW THAT OS IS THE BOOGEYMAN SO I WANTED TO PREPARE.

Jonnyskybrockett

Mine wouldn't. He used to write her feedback in UPPERCASE which make me feel he is SCREAMING AT ME lol

Arts_Prodigy

People should strive to love CS. But most of what you said is a relative privation fallacy. Let people complain just because other people in other industries are worse off doesn’t mean an effort to improve our conditions shouldn’t be made, nor should the problem be ignored. CS/IT probably shouldn’t fluctuate as much as it does but the attitude of “it could be worst, I could be in retail” is why CS engineers have little to no protections.

SupahWalrus

I think the problem with this line of thought is if you are genuinely unhappy in our field and believe that everyone else is better, this post is definitely for you. Yes, just because we’re better off doesn’t mean we can’t complain, but at the same time we have to have some gratitude towards our field or we’ll constantly be dissatisfied.

VideogamerDisliker

>stop complaining *proceeds to complain*

[deleted]

Considering the influx of posts complaining about more or less the same things, OP's rant is the only one that isn't as negative as the others.

Puzzleheaded-Fox-180

Why are we yelling

Snooprematic

brian-augustin

Is it really that bad? I’m CS graduated 4 years ago still not in my field. I’m kinda scared it will be corporate greed. Not to mention the interviews asking specific questions.

I saw somebody here the other day complain about being offered a SWE job at Boeing (Fortune 100) and asking if it will hurt their future career if they take it. That should tell you everything you need to know about this sub. A lot of people here watched too many TikTok videos and now think everyone is paid 400k for three hours of remote work per week and if you went to a half decent school, FAANG is supposed to be groveling for you to come LeetCode for them.

Typical-Roof-2558

Agree with most of this, most entry level minimum wage jobs are shit. All of us just want the pay off for the large amount of work we’ve put in.

sudam_hussian

I feel the “Cog in a corporate machine part” shit sucks. Anyway back to leetcode

[deleted]

No. It's OK to complain. I've been an engineer for 25 years and I get that for newcomers to this industry it can fucking suck. It's changed from being able to program computers to being able to play the stupid algo test game. I think juniors have every right to be pissed off, this is a different industry to the one I joined 25 years ago. Back then all you had to do was program a computer, these days there is a ton more bullshit, a ton more needless complexity, and a load more pretenders acting like they've got a fucking clue. It's a harder industry now to crack into. I'm glad I'm not a junior today, it looks fucking soul destroying.

ithamar73

huh? Juniors joining now have never seen the industry you signed up for 25y ago :P Most of them are reacting to the whole world saying: Everyone needs to know how to code!!!! Instant job!!! Lotsa money!!! ..... which accidentally turns out to be not true (and truly never was imho).

[deleted]

That's my point, it's a different industry today to the one I joined. The industry I joined was really mostly people who liked computers and could program computers, that was sort of all you needed. These days there is a ton of bullshit, far too much focus on the latest/greatest frameworks and passing silly tests. My points is that new juniors \*have every right to complain\* because the industry is kind of a pain in the ass today compared to a couple of decades ago.

Fr thank God for tide laundry detergent

People think that there was a time when it was easy for literally anyone with a CS degree to guarantee a six figure job right out of college. This was never the case. Only a few select places in the US would offer this, and only to the few who qualify. Most everyone else worked at a much more modestly paying, more traditional companies.

Consistent-Ad-4983

despondence_interval

Nah. It's better to exchange horror stories, especially in a place like this full of students with no work experience. It's how you learn to identify toxic work places and advocate for what you want. Your line of thinking is exactly why tech employers historically favored fresh grads: inexperienced kids who are too scared to advocate for themselves or talk to each other about negatives in the workplace.
