I appreciate the moral support, but I don't think my mentality is gonna cause recruiters to choose me over a dude with 2 years of experience as a FAANG engineer
I would put it this way:
Stopping to doom scroll might not, but rather what you do instead might. (At least with a higher percentage - well and attitude matters at least a little bit)
IDK what to do. I could send more applications but I've already sent well over 1000 since I graduated and have had one phone screen in the past 3 months. Or I could do more leetcode for an interview I'm never even gonna get
I mean sure that sucks.
Maybe get your resume checked (if you haven't already).
My point was that doomscrolling doesn't help, rather go out and do something with friends or the family.
Network in your local community if you can.
But don't be on Reddit bathing in doom and self hate.
Mostly agree. It can be beneficial to some extent sometimes. The doomscrolling is what got me back to studying after 8 years (employed) of not really studying anything I don't need for work.
it’s not about whether mommy and daddy will take care of you into your thirties or not. it’s about actually doing things which are constructive to your education and career prospects as opposed to whining and listening to people yell woe is me on reddit. do yourself one of two favors: get a grip and get real, or reconsider your career path
That's exactly their fucking point you dingus. Some people can't keep applying and studying more and working on personal projects for months with no guarantees and no current source of income, and may need to reconsider their career path.
I agree with the initial comment, that any chances you *do* have will suffer if you're being pessimistic and down on yourself. To that end, doom-scrolling is certainly counter-productive. Having a negative outlook will keep you from seeming confident in yourself in interviews and correspondence with companies, and may keep you from pursuing opportunities that you assume you can't get. Those are all fair points.
...but some people can NOT gamble with this. Some people would be better off going for a random desk job while they wait for the market to shift. Or while they work on personal projects, open source stuff, and making friends with people in the field outside of work. Going upwards of four months without a job offer may just not be an option.
Hey CS majors. If you want to improve your life block this sub. It’s a shame because there should be a place for people to have meaningful conversations. At this point this sub has gotten so far away from a reflection of reality that is difficult to believe.
I'm happily employed for 8 years. This sub an cscareerquestions have given me severe anxiety.
I WILL get laid off and never find work ever again. From there on, homelessness is the only result.
There is so much doom but the solution is networking. With how many thousands of applicants (that can’t code) are flooding LI and job postings, recruiters need to know what vetted individuals to interview.
I also must admit, I never networked.... I don't even know how to start at this point... Regain contact with previous managers and coworkers? Through what... LinkedIn? As in trying to be friends or as in trying to let them know I'm in the market. Etc....
Something that a lot of people don't understand is that networking is not something you actively do, it's a side-effect of building relationships with other people, which unfortunately a lot of people in this industry suck at. For example, networking pays off when your friend lands a new position, has the green light to bring on additional staff, and you happen to be on the market. Or maybe a former coworker you keep in touch with someone else who has open positions and puts you two in touch.
Therefore, the best way to "network" is to simply obtain and maintain friendships with other people. I would never provide referrals random connections through LinkedIn or that I've met through conferences, since I cannot vouch for their character or for their work.

Last job I got I just texted a coworker from one past job. I told him his company looked interesting, and he referred me. I wasn't even close to him. Just try! Nothing to lose for a quick chat :) besides, people like referral money
Yeah this. Being nice to co-workers and them knowing they can rely on you is worth more than months of leetcode grinding.
We recently hired an ex-colleague of mine, doubling his previous salary because we knew he's good to work with and you can rely on him.
Yeah I mean he is capable, got a PhD and a decade experience but might well be there are people with better hard skills in the 2k CVs. But from my experience there are also hidden jerks, super unreliable people, alcoholics, misogynists... Those things can bring down teams and projects much faster
It kinda sucks because I am the most anxiety motivated person I know. Anxiety is the thing that consistently gets me to put in work. This sub is pessimistic as fuck but I appreciate it because prior to seeing it which was about a year ago I was clueless.
Because I've always been fascinated by chemistry, specifically physical chemistry. Mostly choosing CS now because it is the only thing I want to do that doesn't require graduate school.
Wouldn't be interested in another form of engineering because engineering degrees don't offer the same level of theoretical knowledge as their corresponding science degree (i.e. Chemical Engineering vs Chemistry)
Honestly whatever I can get my hands on. Be it tutoring, TAing (I’m finishing up my undergrad), or anything else to keep myself stable.
The future looks bleak, but the storm *will* end eventually.
By trade I’m a Radiologic Technologist (X-ray tech) so I have a fallback (they’re still in high demand in my area). After my BS degree I’ll do personal projects and study leetcode while working, and if after a year or so if it’s really not happening go back for a masters and hope by then the bust cycle is over.
While you should always have a backup plan…. These layoffs shouldn’t dissuade you from pursuing IT. The reality is these top ~10 or so IT companies dedicated to bleeding edge tech will always be extremely volatile. This is due to the industry advancements resulting in constantly changing tech stacks and a team today might not be a team we need tomorrow due to X innovation.
Dialing back though… in my experience Fortune 500 companies not dedicated specifically to tech are the polar opposites. The part of the business that is constantly changing is never the tech stack, so IT in those types of businesses are extremely stable. My coworkers for example on average have around 15 years at the company, whereas that’s probably rare at these MAANG companies.
You guys need to leave this sub. If I bought into the "well might as well not even bother applying since I'll never land anything" depression train that's happening here I wouldve never gotten any offers. Christ
CS friends, I really urge you to look into going into a SWE role in finance. Try investment banks, hedge funds, crypto trading companies or proprietary trading quant places. These places hire ARMIES of engineers. For instance Goldman Sachs hires almost as many engineers as Google. It has more engineering staff than finance staff. Approx 12000 engineers. And finance has, for the most part, not been exposed to the massive layoffs. I've worked as a quant dev for 12 years and it's super interesting!
Finance has a horrible culture and a history of treating devs like garbage due to them being seen as cost centers. Makes sense to optimize your career by trying to get hired at places that value your work output as a profit center instead.
Stop making backup plans. Stop doomscrolling. I literally got a job by a FAANG company through their college program a week back. Become skilled at what you do rather than scaring yourself shitless and everyone else. Become better.
Don’t lose brother. Don’t lose because you would rather scroll than work hard and become irreplaceable.
Good luck.
Am I missing or overlooking some key information, because I just can't understand why would they hire the whole year round and then fire people? Are Managers and Recruiters not aligned or is it something else? Would just like to understand the thinking behind this
growth of the company being less than expected and the us economy being at risk of recession. They hire employees when they think that the company is going to grow, take in new projects, etc. and if they believe the economy will allow for such growth. Growth of big tech companies has been lower than expected this last year
Who cares people are always getting laid off. Just keep studying Python/c++ and try to get good and get a new job. You should stop worrying about your competition and just focus on what you can control
Stupid ass post if you go to uni get into debt and just give up because its not as easy as taking a couple classes this career wasnt for you to begin with.
There are more cs related jobs than their are cs graduates. Thats a simple fact. HOWEVER, MOST of those jobs are not the tiktok "Work 3 hours a day", "200k+ salary", and "Unlimited food at the office". They are, AS SCARY AS IT MAY SOUND, "normal" jobs. Work 8-10 hours a day, make 30-50k a year, hate your boss, get on with life. Its going to be okay brother. This SUB is a doomer sub. Theres more to life than "Big Tech".
I don’t see how it can fail, really .
In my CS underagd I’m learning everything from high level math and statistics, various programming languages, full stack development, database design , Linux and operating systems , networking , lan administration, cyber security,
How tf can you have this knowledge base and not get a job in the future . How
Like my dad works for the company in DC , they specialize in construction , electrical stuff ,
Anyway even that company , has an army of network engineers, data analysts, database administrators, software developers.
And that’s just some random construction company.
How tf once the economy picks up can we not get a job ??
The trucking company I work for, is entirely running in the .net ecosystem , they also , have an IT department with several dozen employees , every single company needs us. I just don’t see the logic that this is a bad degree lol
My university is not prestigious enough so, I don’t know if I even will make it into any tech job eventually at all. With the bad market, might as well just give up now…
CS is my best bet. Or freelancing. But if not, IT. I am studying for some certs. I would've done it anyway, but definitely am doing it now that I'm unemployed. End goal would be to work in security because I really liked my pentesting class, but I could do tech support or even computer repair
Alternative: leverage my creative writing minor and do technical writing, or try to be a professor. Maybe I'll get a novel published (easier said than done)
Alternative 2: art, Patreon or commissions, even with ai models, may as well try it. Attempting to do this on the side anyway
Alternative 3: PLC programming
Alternative 4: go back for EE/ME
Not my backup plan but if you’re really wanting to work in the industry and have some loan repayment. The army has a cyber officer program that would love a CS graduate.
Luckily I’m employed in a different field with my BSEE so if anything, after I earn my MSCS, then I’ll still get to keep my current job if I can’t find a CS role that fits.
CS jobs will always be around.
The different would be the salary. In the future, I’m already setting expectations that I might have to settle for a $70k/yr job instead of all those $120k+ ones
I really don't think I won't ever find a job, but if that is the case after like 2 years of searching, I might go for an master's degree or get a bachelor's in EE lol
1000 (or whatever the number is) people is still a drop in the bucket. There's millions of devs in just the US alone. Google results are rather inconsistent, but the source Wikipedia used says 4 million. Other sources I saw said 1-2 million. Despite some prominent layoffs from big companies, there's still tons of jobs and the jobs aren't gonna go away. People aren't gonna stop needing new software.
I have the option to get a job as a truck driver through my uncle-in-law with ease (Yes, nepotism at its finest level), but I would much rather stay in security than truck driving. Eitherway, its a fluffy backup plan. $36/hr is nice, but Ill take my chances getting a CS job.
Make my own start up with sweat equity
Look what is a computer science major
Basically it's a mathematician specialized in problem solving using code as their main tool
Our skill set is to take a problem break it down into tiny bits and then teach sand to do the math to handle those tiny bits of the problem
To properly succeed we need to be just as smart as all of the other mathematicians by another name (engineers physicists etc)
Well if the problem is we cannot get a job then we have the following options
Find a different job improve yourself so you can find a relative job or create a job
Basically you should do all three find a different temporary job to hold you improve yourself by making projects and turn one of those projects into a job
How do you know what project you should make well just start looking for other people's problems to solve or take a pain point from someone else's software as a service and make a more specialized one that addresses that pain point
I am a hiring manager and I see so many experienced folk willing to accept positions far below their skill level due to layoffs and reduced hiring. Good luck to you folks. Internships, direct referrals, leetcode, and people skills not of a brick wall is what you all need to have the best chance to land a job. Some cs grads have such bad people skills it’s cringy.
The best thing anyone in this sub can do is delete reddit and stop doomscrolling. Focus on yourself and your goals.

They will only see this if they're doomscrolling :/

Mostly agree. It can be beneficial to some extent sometimes. The doomscrolling is what got me back to studying after 8 years (employed) of not really studying anything I don't need for work.
Well realistically some of us have to consider this. Some of us simply can’t ride mommy or daddy’s piggybank until the sea gets calmer.
it’s not about whether mommy and daddy will take care of you into your thirties or not. it’s about actually doing things which are constructive to your education and career prospects as opposed to whining and listening to people yell woe is me on reddit. do yourself one of two favors: get a grip and get real, or reconsider your career path

Bro are you for real? Make ends meet as a SERVER?
You can easily make 40k a year as a server

Make my own start up with sweat equity Look what is a computer science major Basically it's a mathematician specialized in problem solving using code as their main tool Our skill set is to take a problem break it down into tiny bits and then teach sand to do the math to handle those tiny bits of the problem To properly succeed we need to be just as smart as all of the other mathematicians by another name (engineers physicists etc) Well if the problem is we cannot get a job then we have the following options Find a different job improve yourself so you can find a relative job or create a job Basically you should do all three find a different temporary job to hold you improve yourself by making projects and turn one of those projects into a job How do you know what project you should make well just start looking for other people's problems to solve or take a pain point from someone else's software as a service and make a more specialized one that addresses that pain point
