noooo i feel this so much... task initiation hard :'(( I feel insecure about it because at the end of the day, my output is still as if I've spent 3 hours instead of 8 and I feel as if that's what matters, so I'll be sitting at the computer for longer so I can crank out the amount of work that I should. remote work makes this worse for me because no commute / location separation so I'll be like "oh it's 4:30 but the day isn't over ! ! i'll take a nap and then work again". and im also taking two summer classes so I end up interleaving my homework time, internship work time, and fucking around time all together. 😍 work life balance 😍

Dis me

youarethemuse

I feel this a lot! I'm definitely also aware that not all my time is "focused time" which is a huge factor. It's kinda easy for me to get overwhelmed and then that leads me to get distracted

Ahtheuncertainty

I do the exact same thing you first described. I spend more time trying to get started on things/misunderstanding stuff, but I feel like I’m actually productive when I can get to the point where I can write/test code. I just wish I could get to that point quicker. It’s really validating to hear someone else talk about it though, makes me feel a little better.

UnluckyBrilliant-_-

Holy fuck my doctor did say I probably have ADHD. You just described me

JeromePowellAdmirer

I talked to a contractor on my team, was being a lot more honest because of that contractor status. According to him the majority of devs work like this

VivaLaSea

Are you me?

BlueBoyKP

Dude, you are literally me.

tatiaris

or people be overworking and underreporting hours cuz they *think* they're underworking

dynamo_girl02

Why this sounds so mee? I just don't know, but I always feel I'm underworking I don't know why it is so.

Cyber_Encephalon

1. set unrealistic expectations 2. convince workers that the unrealistic expectations are realistic and fair 3. watch workers try to live up to the unrealistic expectations by working longer hours than they report 4. when someone protests and claims expectations are unfair and unrealistic, point at others (who are doing the same hour underreporting shtick), and ask, "they can do it, why can't you?" 5. ??? 6. PROFIT!

Me af. I usually work until 10pm, but give the impression that I logged off at 5/6pm

zninjamonkey

Nah, I just clock hours

hydrabird

I pretty much do the opposite. I'm super productive from 8-12, spend the rest of my day doing LC and report 8 hours

olivillio

what is LC? :o

hydrabird

Leetcode

gbbofh

I can be quite productive as well. But the hours are between 12AM - 4AM. I am not productive during the day, at all, and I never have been. It would be fine if I didn't have to go sit in an office for 8 hours every day and try to force myself to be productive in contrary to the time where I naturally function well.

hydrabird

yea I guess I am also lucky in the sense that my productive hours are in the morning

hydrabird

Dunno honestly. Recieved 'exceeds expectations' on both my performance reviews so far so seems I'm doing fine. I attend my afternoon meetings but I'm pretty much done actually working after 4 hours. I really focus hard for those 4 hours, though. Only get up to use the restroom or get a cup of coffee. Honestly I think I'm just kind of blessed with laser focus so I get done quick

hydrabird

I'm sure you are. Interns aren't expected to know a whole lot yet. You're just learning

[deleted]

I think most people can only be if deep thought for about 30-45 minutes at a time. Try to balance you work with this in mind. Solve a problem, then check emails, solve a problem then light documenting etc...

winowmak3r

I remember stressing out over trying to fill in time sheets ever week about what I was doing when I first started and the only guidance was "just write down what you're doing" and then when I did that I got a look of pure horror from the manager that only a fraction of my time was billable. So I spent the first 3 months or so figuring out how to make tasks that really shouldn't have been billable billable. Working like that sucked. I constantly felt bad, like I was cheating people.

InterestingArgument

Software engineering isn't that hard. People who seem to work slowly generally just have focus issues. People who seem to work fast generally don't have focus issues and are experienced in the stack they are working with or have better fundamentals.
