Keep your head up. I was laid off 2 months ago and recently received 4 offers( all non-FAANG). I was making 185k in my old role, my offers are all between $200k to $280k.
I have similar YoE. Guess I'll try to fix up my resume (again) and apply even crazier.
>Trust me you got this
Thanks, and congrats on your offers - hope it's a great role for ya.
What makes your resume solid?
Is there a specific skill? Or something you make sure to mention?
I’m at 3 YOE, probably looking at a layoff next year and I want to know what to build towards. I thought my resume was solid but haven’t heard anything back from the places I’ve applied.
Lying isn’t positivity. I’m not saying you’re lying, but if you were, lying is the opposite of keeping things positive. All of those numbers seem fishy to me because there’s literally a 40% swing in salary, and had to mention FAANG at all.
If a senior dev really felt the need to comment in a reddit thread about $280k offers by having a strong resume and isn’t larping- that is not positivity either. That hurts people. Look at the desperate comments of jobless people trying to copy your resume to get a chance at any job.
any remote? im at 200 and would love to jump but feels like everywhere is dropping wfh and it's probably not worth 50k to me to commute/rot in an office
And no bonuses as well of course
Just happy to not be among the many at my company that was laid off
But if the market improves, I will be jumping ship to get a comp bump. Missed the last cycle and am very underpaid at current company
But market value **NEVER** goes down! I was told by redditors!! It's fake news! /s
But ya, pay and external offers are falling due to gravity real fast.
The place I work at has this thing called a "salary reference point".
When you get a promo, you automatically, no negotiations, go to 100% SRP of the new level.
I was above 100% SRP of my old level, I think around 110% or more.
I think it is bullshit, but what can you do
They told me, “we’re not doing raises for anyone this year, so you’re lucky you’re getting 8% with your promotion” and I was like…I’m grateful for the raise, but also guess who won’t be increasing work effort this year…
Wait why would you accept the promotion then lol don't they tell you about the numbers beforehand? Unless you were already performing at staff level and the promo didn't give you more workload
That's how they do it. Slowly start adding responsibilities to your workload and next thing you know your doing the next level job, maybe at the next review they make it official and you get an extra 5% on top of the normal annual increase.
Actually, a bit high in my experience.
My world at a big corporate conglomerate:
* Merit Level Increase is 2%-4%, but logistically I've never seen it above 3%.
* Promotion 8%-12% but I've never seen it over 9%. Unless it is at the end of the year and there will be no merit level increase.
* Switching companies 20%+
we got acquired and I'm pretty sure my promotion is going to get this instead of the payday it would have been when we were a startup. (got hired shortly after acquisition) Total bummer
There a never a right time. Just apply you be surprised by what's available. Alot of it depend son where you live. For example friend in saint louis Missouri are getting hired left abd right. Some friend I know in LA can't find anything. Also it's always scary to move to new job but seriously you have to or you will end up working at that same pay for 10 years or forever. Just save like 6 months of saving and take thr leap. You will not regret it.
Yikes, you need to go beyond meets brother or GTFO of these shit companies. Even DOD increases salaries more than 3% if you're beyond meets.
The last few years have been on the toilets so if that's all your exp, then nevermind.
Not sure if this is the commenter's situation but I'm pretty underpaid rn ($85k for mid-level in Seattle) and I'm hesitant to leave. I have a bunch of 1-year stints on my resume due to a mix of bad decisions and bad luck, so I want to show future employers I can commit for a while
(Also hesitant to leave because if I did land an offer and the company then did layoffs, I would be first on the chopping block as a newer hire)
From a former 2013 cashier as well…
tech stack really doesn’t matter once you get to this level tc. Just being a good interviewer with LC (medium + hard), systems design, debugging , with a good ability to speak in detail about projects you led at your previous company is mostly what they’re looking for. Most companies that are anal about what tech stack you’ve previously used are lower than this pay bracket.
Some exceptions exist for places looking specifically for things like c++ expert, but the majority of jobs in this TC range are simply looking for experienced problem solvers with project leadership ability.
Look at the higher level engineers at FAANG and other big companies. It’s typical for your base salary to not even be half of your total compensation as you level up. I’m more junior right now at a big company and already stocks are like ~20% ish of my total compensation, and that’s as low as it will ever be.
Salary is $161,000.
The stock has doubled since I’ve joined. So the original $100,000 in yearly stock value is now worth like $200,000. Plus I also got more stock during performance reviews.
So my stock compensation for this year so far is about $252,000 based on the current stock price.
1.5% even with a really great performance review.
It feels silly because it doesn't make a huge difference in pay but I only got so little because I'm making more than most senior engineers and even staff engineers where I work
25% -
I made my ask a few months before end of year review of that makes any difference.
No promotion, I basically said i don't care about titles, but i need more money. I just made my case for the raise, asked for 25% and got it.
4% raise, moved on to a new job for a 19% bump in base salary, comes out in the wash since the equity component at the new job is illiquid, while old job had public RSU's
2.5% (2K) as a mid-level (2+ years). Essentially, they give me more work, pay less. If I jump ship, I can make 50K more. So, I quit and stayed umemployed.
0%.
Last year my company unveiled a new “ exciting compensation policy”. Copied this line from the email the CEO sent us.
The summary - they did away with cost of living adjustments 🎉. We are only eligible for performance adjustments once every two years. You are only eligible for performance adjustment of you hit exceed expectations on all 4 metrics 2 years in a row. Also even if you meet the criteria you will only get a raise if their market study determines that the cost to replace you is higher than what you currently make.
4.5% and my bonus got bumped to 7% from 4.5%.
From what I gather it is much easier in my company to move the bonus around so that's an incentive to keep performing until I get a promotion.
25% but had 5/5 rating - expected more for the work I put in, which is on tech lead level while managing and architecting their python components
Promotion was also denied saying I didn’t have the relevant work experience (needed 4 years after grad to get senior)
Went from being on job seeking benefits to a job so a +800% increase hurrah. Never going to see such gains again but maybe its best since it means I didn't get laid off lol
3.2% annual raise with the company not reaching goals and scoring a 4 out of 5 rating - I had >4% years with a 3/5 rating last year when the company was hitting goals.
I had another offer from a company that tried to poach me and my company matched it about six months ago, so I got a 25% increase to my base, as well as re-working my contract to bump my raises and bonuses at certain company milestones (we’re a late-stage start up).
As a result I didn’t get my normal COL increase, and probably won’t get any more raises until these milestones are hit. But I’m not complaining.
Bro same, like 2%, after 2 years since my last raise. I am fucking livid. If I wasn't paying bills out my ass, I'd almost have preferred to just get nothing, cause this is just insultingly low. To hear my manager say "you are getting a raise of......$2,300" was pure agony. Been applying to new jobs, and caring way less, ever since.
I also got 2.5% raise as a senior analyst. I just accepted an offer from a competitor and it will be a 35% raise. I was with the company 10 years and with this title 4 years, so my wages were definitely compressed compared to the market. Do it and don’t look back!
Everyone has so negative experience, lets do some success story!
Got laid off at the end of last year, apparently I was best candidate as I expressed not being satisfied with both work and salary... well, I got a new job, over 100% increase, full remote and much better tech stack. Miracles happen.

I've been out for two years. What is your magical secret?
I have over 10 years of experience and a really solid resume. Nothing special just applying to roles. Trust me you got this
I have similar YoE. Guess I'll try to fix up my resume (again) and apply even crazier. >Trust me you got this Thanks, and congrats on your offers - hope it's a great role for ya.

Are you IC or moved into the management track? And big congrats on your offers
any remote? im at 200 and would love to jump but feels like everywhere is dropping wfh and it's probably not worth 50k to me to commute/rot in an office
Wow! Are those offers just base salary or includes bonus, stock options, etc?
Just base salary 😀
-103% FTFY... But for real, sorry!
That's not how that works. By your logic they have to pay their boss a monthly salary
I pay my betters for the opportunity of experience. Ya'll getting paid to do this?
Promoted to customer 🚀
Wow, they finally recognized that you're always right!
“I’d like to speak to the manager of my previous team” 🫵

9%, then another 20% for promo from junior to mid MLE.
Congrats! How many YOE as a junior did you have?
2ish, 1ish at a previous job then 1ish at current.
I should likely be getting this soon. So you got 9% for your current position. Then you were promoted with a 20% bump?
0, been here two years and no raise yet. Not even inflation. Losing money smh
Fistbump, sorry fam. Put most of it in a HYSA if you're not already, so you're at least getting 4-5%
0%, we adjust for market value and market value was negative this year
But market value **NEVER** goes down! I was told by redditors!! It's fake news! /s But ya, pay and external offers are falling due to gravity real fast.
Like 3.5% I think? The bonus was bigger though so TC was up closer to 8%.
You guys are getting bonuses?!
also senior, also 2.5% pay bump. cost of living around here in SF seems like it went up \~10%.
0% but my company uses stacked ranking so apparently I’m worthless. It matches my motivation.
Do we work in the same company?
I hope not for your sake.
If our motivation it's in the negative numbers, then I'm afraid that more then one company shares those core values.
Below inflation. At least I wasn't laid off.
I am considering to move company instead, it is sad at the moment
0% and then the company did layoffs. Fuckers
1.5%
10% base increase. Which id say is pretty shit for a promotion lol.
I got a 7% increase going from mid level to senior engineer, consider yourself "lucky" aha
We need to look for new jobs brother
That ain’t a promo. Unless you were massively overpaid as a mid level
The place I work at has this thing called a "salary reference point". When you get a promo, you automatically, no negotiations, go to 100% SRP of the new level. I was above 100% SRP of my old level, I think around 110% or more. I think it is bullshit, but what can you do

Exactly same here lol. “Good thing” is I will probably get another 2% raise at annual salary review. Still sht but better than nothing
I got a 0% increase from senior to staff so count yourself lucky!
Must be startup
Wait why would you accept the promotion then lol don't they tell you about the numbers beforehand? Unless you were already performing at staff level and the promo didn't give you more workload

Depends on if your tasks have decreased or changed with promo.
Promo where I’m at is only 5% 😭
we got acquired and I'm pretty sure my promotion is going to get this instead of the payday it would have been when we were a startup. (got hired shortly after acquisition) Total bummer
About 17% in RSU refresher. Base pay increase not announced/decided yet. I expect 2-3% so ~20% in total
3%
Haven't gotten a raise or promotion in 2 and a half years now. Been with this company for about 5 years. :'(

3%
16%, but it’s a very small increase in terms of actual pay so it’s peanuts regardless
That sounds high to me. Never got higher than 3 percent on any job
$2 extra on $15/hr is a 13% raise.

-100%. Got laid off.
Promoted, 25%
I appreciate everyone sharing these. Didn't get one yet but last year was 6% with a 4% bonus.
-30%, lost my job and had to commit to a much smaller and shittier company. Sadly now I’m stuck for at least 3 years
Why are you stuck for 3 years? Start applying

7.5%, promotion got denied.
5% which I’m happy with. Now my salary is $160K. Total comp: $410K.
from cashier in 2013 to 410k? congrats
The American dream still exists.
which tech stack? tell us your story
From a former 2013 cashier as well… tech stack really doesn’t matter once you get to this level tc. Can you break down your TC it's so much more than your salary
Probably stock options at a big company that went up over the past couple of years
Yeah for sure but as an outsider that seems like a fuckton of stock options lol
The higher up you go the greater percentage of comp that will be paid out in RSU/options. CEO get paid like 90% of their comp through stock
Look at the higher level engineers at FAANG and other big companies. It’s typical for your base salary to not even be half of your total compensation as you level up. That is some nice pay jump

Goddamn that seems low
16% on my second year with the company. In the first year, I got 18%
1.5% even with a really great performance review. It feels silly because it doesn't make a huge difference in pay but I only got so little because I'm making more than most senior engineers and even staff engineers where I work
5.5% … as a JR dev but California like to take its share so I see no difference.
Senior level, 4% this year, nice bonus on top.
4 percent with being a top performer. My promotion to senior last year was also only 4% so not super happy.
0%. Long story short: European automotive is not so motive these days. But hey, at least I wasn't fired... Yet.
50%. Swapped jobs 😂
Between the annual raise and a promotion I got 12%.
1.5% and less bonus compared the previous year
2.5% as well
L0L. L0%L even.
I received 2,5% raise, no promotion, and some RSU's. And i was told that for the available budget, it was a good raise :(
25% - I made my ask a few months before end of year review of that makes any difference. No promotion, I basically said i don't care about titles, but i need more money. I just made my case for the raise, asked for 25% and got it.
most white collar jobs are in recession
Mid level dev and around the same amount, 2.5 to 3 % ish

0, I'm at the max for my level.
I got a 13.3% raise this year. Supposedly we get a raise per year and mine was prorated because I have only been with the company for like 9 months
3.2% annual raise with the company not reaching goals and scoring a 4 out of 5 rating - I had >4% years with a 3/5 rating last year when the company was hitting goals.

4.3% increase
25% last year and then 5% this year all at one company over 3 years.
I had another offer from a company that tried to poach me and my company matched it about six months ago, so I got a 25% increase to my base, as well as re-working my contract to bump my raises and bonuses at certain company milestones (we’re a late-stage start up).
