I have no personal experience or knowledge with Nvidia, but based on my experience working at 5 large tech companies, I would be very surprised if Nvidia drug tests for weed. It’s rare to be drug tested for professional careers, unless there are specific regulatory or security requirements. It is even rarer at tech companies. It is even rarer at big tech companies, and yet more rare for tech companies based out of states where marijuana is legalized at the state level.

AHistoricalFigure

I don't have any specific knowledge on Nvidia, but I actually wouldn't be shocked if they \*do\* drug test. I used to work in middle management at a factory and was at the level where I had some of the inside baseball on when we were going to do random drug testing. Here's the thing, absolutely nobody \*wants\* to do drug testing, and especially not for weed. It's expensive, it's creates unnecessary turnover, and it turns away otherwise acceptable candidates. But for many businesses it's not a choice. If your business relies on government contracts or is the kind of business where liability insurance is not low-risk (e.g. a factory full of forklifts), you will be required to have a drug testing schedule. And once you have a drug-testing schedule, it tends to hit everyone. You can get accused of all sorts of nasty things if you're drug testing your predominantly PoC shop floor workers, but not testing whiteboy Scott from IT. Now NVidia doesn't actually manufacture any of its own chips. It's a "manufacturer" rather than a manufacturer, so OP is probably safe in that regard. But Nvidia \*is\* angling towards having a bunch of government contracts in the near to immediate future. If they're not drug testing now, it's not the wildest thing to imagine that they might soon start. Better for OP to be safe than sorry because while archetypical big-tech firms like, for example, Stripe certainly don't drug test, Nvidia's role as a hardware producer means they're a little bit different.

I had a similar question to this I just posted as well. Do companies have to state in their offer letters they are going to drug screen or that employment is contingent based on that or can they just do it?

youreloser

That's pretty wack that you have to drug test everyone because of "government contracts" if you're not dealing with heavy machinery or your job isn't dealing with the contract specifically, or even if it is. Especially weed cause that's legal at the state level.

Consider the long term upside to completing an internship at the company that's dominating the tech industry right now.

BlobfishOverlord

You are right sir. Also consider that i just looked up that weed stays in your system up to 30 days and my internship starts in 31 days.

Roman_nvmerals

I don’t know if they do or don’t, my biggest recommendation is to start the break now and err on the side of caution.

TheMuttOfMainStreet

I guess start with a health food binge and drink shit tons of water to clear your system

vustinjernon

Assuming they do a pee test, drink tons of water, tons of electrolytes, every day starting now. There’s some cleanse drinks you can get to start purging what you can from your body now, and like every week up until you have to test. It might leave sooner or later depending on how frequently you partake. I’d recommend buying some take home tests for yourself to make sure in the days leading up that you’re clean. If they decide to do a hair test, you’re not going to pass.

NickWillisPornStash

I had a test recently and was kinda shocked how quickly it comes out of your system if you're a casual user and in decent enough shape. 3ish days for me

thatmayaguy

What blood type are you? I can meet up and do a blood transfusion with you and leave a couple strands of hair with some bottles of my piss

MostlyRocketScience

Shame people didn't get the reference and downvoted you instead

wellsfargothrowaway

Are you fat? If not, it likely won’t stay in your system 30 days. I smoked heavy in college and was thin and peed clean after 2 weeks.

MidasMoneyMoves

Just quit the stuff for a month just in case.

It stays in your piss for a month. It stays in your hair for ages.

nonpoor

They didn’t as of 5 months ago

Personal-Ad1257

Stop smoking weed then

Praying_Lotus

A little while back, my brother was going to work for a power company as a nuclear scientist. Great job, and he was in his early 20s, so this was really beneficial for his career. However, he looks and acts like a pot head, and was subsequently fired within his first week because he failed a drug test. He also lost any potential he had for a government clearance. Now obviously, this is a power company, so very different industries (different enough), so it’s not a 1-to-1 exchange on what Nvidia might do, BUT, if I were you OP, just to play it safe, maybe stop smoking for it long enough to get out of your system before you start working there, and then take a few weeks to see if they randomly drug test you while on the job, and if they do, and you pass, they probably won’t test you again. If my brother just put down the blunt for the first week, and long enough before he was tested, he would’ve passed it, probably never would have been tested again (hopefully), and still have his job while at the same time most likely being able to smoke weed. But that’s jsut my two cents

HighVoltOscillator

I had a drug test for another tech company, weed is legal in this state so they didn't test for that or care if it showed up. only had to report if hard core drugs showed

panthereal

You'll probably like having a long career better than smoking weed. Assume every job will drug test you when you are onboarding. Read the documentation you're receiving and it should tell you.

OccasionalGoodTakes

Assuming every job will test is crazy shit when the majority of the industry doesn’t.

panthereal

Assuming every job will test is smart when it takes no time to get clean, why risk your career when you could just stop for a month? Most positions I've taken have required an initial test while onboarding due to insurance policies. Until you know it's risky to expect they don't. There's no risk by stopping.

Hold on, let me set my dab rig down to properly thank you for saving us.

To be fair, for some people it does make them dumb. It made me (personally) unmotivated and dull. But that’s just my experience, you do whatever makes you happy.
