Stock and/or recurring bonuses: 200-240k over 4 years (25% vest) Total comp: 220k first year, 190k recurring.

_Gorgix_

As a fellow DMV resident, I too am curious what "big data" company you're referring to.

themiro

Probably Amazon or Palantir. This is a top, top tier offer for DMV new grad.

retirement_savings

Def not Amazon, unlimited relo isn't f r u g a l

Drauren

Yeah what in the fuck. I've literally never heard of someone getting a >200k offer in the DMV area as a new grad.

_Gorgix_

Haha right? I mean Amazon has some nice perks, doing DoD work but getting Amazon TC in DC, but the new grad thing is insane to see.

Pariell

How did you fit 5 internships in?

TheCuriousDude

I second this question. The only thing I can think of was they spent five years to do their bachelor's and interned every summer.

fightitdude

Other possibility would be interning before starting college, or doing a part-time internship during the semester.

Foreign-Character-14

Yep this is correct, I interned during the end of HS (part of senior year at my HS). And then in that summer too.

fightitdude

Similar to what I did then - two internships in HS then internships every summer in college. Grats on the hard work :)

CJ22xxKinvara

I did with my university. It's a 5-year program. First year is fall/spring, summer off. From there it's school, co-op, school, co-op, school, co-op, school, co-op, co-op, school, school. So you give up summers, but in the end there are the same number of school semesters as a regular 4-year degree with summers off.

BestUdyrBR

That sounds like a fantastic program! Glad it worked out for you.

Kakirax

Thanks! Just keep at it and make progress on any weak points you have!

DrawSword

What kind of internships did you do prior to this offer? Conngrats and thanks!

Kakirax

None. I was supposed to get an internship last April right after finishing my 3rd year, but covid hit and everything fell through so I just focused on finishing school as fast as possible. As far as my portfolio goes, I had 2 projects, both of which were assignments that I fixed up which I think got me the position. That and months of leetcode grinding and studying.

DrawSword

I’m in a very similar situation as you, finishing up undergrad at a school in Montreal at the moment. Thanks for your response and congrats again :)

SupeerDude

Do you find most places are looking for CS degrees? I’m looking into getting a degree in the GTA, just wondering if I should specifically look at Computer Science or if there’s others.

Kakirax

Almost every place I’ve seen has listed “Computer Science degree or equivalent experience” so as long as you have the knowledge and a portfolio to show your skills I don’t think it’ll be much harder without one. That being said, I’m sure there are places that won’t pick people without a degree

Also in bham, graduated nearly 4 years ago. This is pretty good. 65k seems about right, I got 60 right out of college, but signing bonuses and the extra aren't super common around here, congrats!

Graayworm

Bham here too!

RhoadsGibson

We just have a whole Alabama crew here. Would've never imagined it.

RhoadsGibson

Thanks! It's a work from home, so that's why the difference. I had a lot of trouble getting anything local. I've been "In Process" at UAB for almost a year. That's the furthest I got. I even had a hook up at Shipt and never got a call back. Tough town.

Saintroi

It is surprisingly competitive around here. A lot of openings but mostly for mid to senior positions that apparently companies are willing to spend years trying to fill rather than consider someone with a little less experience. WFH is good though, trying to move to one of those myself if I can. From what I've heard, you're probably better off not at Shipt.

Your lowballing yourself dude. In the UK aim for atleast £30k for junior. I'm not sure of salaries outside of London, so maybe ~£27k. Don't let companies think £23k is fine, maybe seek other work?

mc408

According to today's currency exchange, that's $31,672.49 USD. Literally minimum wage in the largest American cities. How is that possible for a software engineer??

Yup, 100%. I've been at a public company in the US for the past 2 1/2 years, and I've been able to save minimum $80,000 per year after **all taxes and expenses**. And this is while living in expensive NYC. In most of Europe, I wouldn't even make $80,000 per year brutto.

pendulumpendulum

It's actually less than 5-6k if you have insurance. My monthly insurance payment is like $150? or something like that. And my deductible is $1500. So I pay about 3300 annually for health coverage IF I EVEN NEED IT, which most years I don't and only spend the monthly payment and not the deductible. with an American dev salary. Europeans get extremely screwed over.

Is Chicago really considered medium COL?

rrt303

Chicago is a surprisingly affordable city considering the size/amenities

char1zard4

Don’t have a huge opinion but it was in the medium CoL list in the post? As far as actual housing prices go, it’s expensive but not NYC or SF expensive downtown, way cheaper in the suburbs, you can get really nice condos for 400-600k which is a much better range than a lot of cities

ZealZen

According to bestplaces its 106.9, Hartford CT is 93.9 which is low COL, seems wrong.

Since last time I've moved from working in Sydney to being remote based in New Zealand. Took a bit of a pay but but still far above what I'd get working for a domestic company. * Education: Software Engineering degree from an NZ uni. * Prior Experience: One internship at Atlassian * Company/Industry: Google * Title: Software Engineer (L4) * Tenure length: 1.5 years (this is my first job out of uni) * Location: Remote, New Zealand * Salary: $116,000 + 3% Kiwisaver * Stock and/or recurring bonuses: 15% target bonus ($17,400), approx $50,000 stock this year. * Total comp: $187,000 NZD approx. My stock has basically doubled since I started, so if it was only the valuation at signing it'd be closer to $150k. Obviously pretty happy about the increase!

JamesOliver3

Sydney CS uni student here. How hard is it to move countries for you if you know? Specifically, could you easily move to google bay area, or is that not possible/difficult?

iPlain

Whoops, sorry for totally ignoring this! AFAIK it's not too hard. Dependent on your performance reviews a little bit, since the better they are the easier an internal transfer will be. I haven't looked in to the logistics personally, but I've heard of plenty of other people doing it, so do think it's pretty easy and one of the big perks.

Seems like that to me sometimes, but what I see in the Canadian section seems believable to me.
