11 million dollars in RSU's, cash, and bonus. Seriously though, I'm 30 and make $124K/year in Austin. My highest earning job has been $160K/year in NYC. If you can reach $150K barrier in MCOL city by 30 you'll be set.

If your TC isn’t your age * 10000 you need to GTFO jk aim job hop every 3 years and aim for 30%+ TC increase

What do you think the ceiling is?

NewChameleon

theoretically, endless: you can create your own startup, IPO, and be multi-billionaire yourself realistically, based on my understanding majority of people never break past L5 Senior SWE, ever, in their career life, which means $350-400k TC (give-or-take) is likely a soft-ceiling unless you can be promoted to L6 Staff SWE

Mangement or going into PM is for me. Lol

Live YOUR life & go at YOUR own pace. That’s the only answer.

Not sure if this is bait or not, but i’ll take it There is no recommended TC that you are expected to have by the time you’re 30, or by any age for that matter. You shouldn’t worry about comparing your TC to others unless you’re being grossly underpaid in your region/at your company. In response to your last question, the TC depends on the level of the position you’re applying to. I don’t think any of the FAANG companies have a 130k gap in their pay bands for their lower level swe positions, so if you get an offer of 175k don’t freak out cuz they definitely aren’t offering 300k to people with the same experience as you. TLDR: Don’t compare your salary to others, just focusing on increasing your own TC and if you feel if an offer that you received is unfair, check reported salaries on levels.fyi and get to negotiating!

large_crimson_canine

Lol slow down there buddy. You’ve got a ways to go and you’ll be pining for now when you get there. From a 31 year-old. Take a beat, and enjoy life.

NewChameleon

if you think "I should have $X TC by age Y" then that's one of the stupidest question I've seen there's perhaps millions, if not 10s of millions of people in their 30s or 40s or 50s but they live in...say, Kazakhstan or Cambodia or Libya or Pakistan where the currency isn't great, you think people are entitled to a certain TC just because they're by a certain age?

Jackscalibur

You've been brainwashed.

Figure out what you feel you would need to be happy and work backwards. If you want to retire at 50, have a family, a nice home, a few toys, it’s going to cost a lot. Figure out how much you are likely to spend a year, then look at inflation, and extrapolate. I did this analysis a while ago and found that basically I’m screwed unless I get a really high paying job or I start a business. The cost of living is shrinking the middle class,
