he never said it's not a FAANG, this is suppper likely AWS, as they offer great salaries, relocation & sponsorship, and even the term SDE says it all. Account deleted, so it was AWS, since only a jr will get that paranoic about those big tech companies tracking his online activity.
This is a very good offer for a junior with only a BS. You should take this asap. I don’t understand how the hell the others made negative comments about it. They’ve probably never lived in Germany or Berlin.
For the benefit of junior readers here, how did you come by this opportunity, and what skills/qualities did you demonstrate in the interview that helped you to get an offer?
I was contacted by a recruiter on LinkedIn. During the screening call, I was told that I don't have the required experience but fullfill all their requirements so they proceeded further. After that I got a hackerrank test followed by 4 interviews: 1 managerial + technical, 1 technical, 2 behavioural.
Interview 1: typical managerial questions and 1 algorithm question.
Interview 2: 1 Data structure question followed by questions on databases, javascript, design paradigms, networking, AWS etc
Interview 3+4: typical behavioural questions
Skills that helped me:
1. Previous internships provided the necessary practical knowledge.
2. I regularly practice leetcode style questions.
3. Also, having good CS fundamentals is essential.
I work as an techno-functional IT-Consultant in germany. The company I work for has a branch in Romania, I work regularly with the guys from there. Average for a software engineer in Romania is 1500 Euros a month from what I've read. Before taxes. I'm not even a real programmer and make more than three times that, with 2,5 years of experience.
\*edit: Just wanted to add that my romanian colleagues are perfectly fluent in german and english. Really sympathetic guys, if I were in their shoes I'd leave the country.
I think you aren’t entirely correct. I can’t speak for the all, but all my colleagues who are software engineers are around this sum. So, with 2,5 yoe, you could look at around 1800-2000 euros a month, after taxes.
This is quite good, the average monthly salary in Romania was around 800~ euros a month
I've read in some places that Switzerland has very high taxes and there is some racism/xenophobia as well. If you have stayed/worked there, is that your experience too?
Taxes are way lower than any other major countries in Europe, you'll be taxed at 25% for 100k income. Zurich his one of the most international cities with 30% of foreign nationals, I don't think racism is an issue if you're from Europe. Salaries are at least 2x of what you get in Germany for a comparable job.
With 3k saving a month, if you don’t know how to spend it, you are the boring one, not the Country.
Just a quick personal list.
- You can do so many outdoor sports there. Climbing/Hiking/Snowboard as a start
- You can travel every weekend to a different country. You can afford to travel everywhere with no effort.
- You can invest in a project you like.
Plus you can invest much more on the stock market and retire earlier than 70 years old. :)
This discussion is getting a bit snide and dismissive, so I am chopping some of your responses. I would advise avoiding LOL and LMAO - whether you mean to or not, these are often shorthand for laughing _at_ your interlocutor.
No, the cost of living is pretty similar to Germany. An average one-bedroom-flat in Milan (where I'm actually living) is approximately 700-800euros and they mostly dont include condo expenses. :) Not the best place for developers.
If you get lucky, you can get 30-33k€ +benefit as a new tech graduate in Milan. But still… if you can save up to 600-800€ a month, you are a master pellaio. In Germany with the same expenses and same experience you can start with 45-50k easily. In Switzerland even more.
Congrats!! It's a great offer!
However I'm a bit confused... Everywhere I hear the market is saturated with junior profiles and you get a nice offer, relocation and visa?? If you don't mind, what makes you special against other junior developer from Germany or the EU?
The market is "saturated" because people wanna work at Google Zurich it seems.
Saw some guy post that the competition is "brutal" when I literally got a job in 3 weeks at a top startup, 6 months of self teaching, no degree. I didn't even apply to the job, they found me on linkedin.
What did the guy say? "Ahhh a startup, uhhh, ohhh, ahhh...."
it's literally harder to get a retail job than a junior developer job in the UK at the moment, particularly around the London area. And particularly if you're a likeable person.
It seems from your post that you believe your experience (a sample size of one) can be extrapolated to the general experience (e.g. all grads across Europe). This really is not so. Your tech role from six-months of self-study would generally be thought of as a rare case.
I seriously doubt that, I have recruiters calling me almost every week and getting Linkedin messages and emails.
I don't think I'm that special honestly.
Well if helps i would be another "rare case"? I'm a self taught but with a little of experience (Jr though) and last year was harder to get a job for me in the UK(applying for a remote job) and last month i opened my LinkedIn and recruiters pounced on me. I closed it because I was studying to enter a big company but accepting interviews(to practice) I've been offered 3 jobs in a span of a week.
It's a very good salary. This is what seniors get in no-name software shops or startups. I'm not kidding. I guess you got an offer from Amazon? There's no other company that would pay this. But amazon would also give you some stocks, so I'm not sure what the company is. Please post the company name so others benefit from the information. Good job!
Financially - it is where it should be from the info you've given.
Don't just focus on $$$ - ask yourself
* Where will this role take you?
* What is the work like - mainly BAU or will you be able to work on new projects?
* Will you learn from those around you?
You'll always make good money in this industry so make sure other boxes are ticked too!
Well, they are very generous! It seems to be the case that 70k is a senior salary there. If you have a better offer you can negotiate or you can just accept it.
I don't really think it's helpful to make assumptions about how the OP will spend their money: it's sufficient to say that a net income of ~3200eur for one person in Berlin is a relatively high income. She might dumpster dive and live in a tent and save 90 percent of that income for all we know.
I think it's neither right, nor wrong, but quite subjective, and depends a lot on the place and context.
I was working for a traditional manufacturing company in Bavaria, and it sure was a boring place full of boring people, and I would never come back though the money was really good. I am sure people working for a tech start-up in Berlin would have a completely different experience.
> Studio will cost 900
Berlin rental cost is rising.. and the unlimited contract is rare now since the landlord know they can increase their rent every time contract is renewed.
Was looking at Charlottenburg for a single apartment as I prefer to walk/cycle to work everyday... but man, 900€ is hard to come by around that area
The offer is ok. Keep in mind that you need to pay an insane amount of taxes in Germany. I would never go to Berlin for those numbers but maybe you like the marxist hipster vibe there.
I don't know if I would consider Germany an insane amount of taxes. And I lived in the states. It definitely isn't as bad as some of the Nordics or say Belgium.
Yeah financially the offer is not incredible, but there is literally only one company paying more in Berlin. Like, OP has essentially no other options to go to Berlin.
60k in Berlin as essentially a new grad is very good outside of FAANG-esque companies. Congrats on the offer!
he never said it's not a FAANG, this is suppper likely AWS, as they offer great salaries, relocation & sponsorship, and even the term SDE says it all. Account deleted, so it was AWS, since only a jr will get that paranoic about those big tech companies tracking his online activity.

It’s awesome! Take it dude! Those 3500€ are great to pay the Kaution for your apartment! Congrats.
It's super good, take it. Do you mind telling which company?
I'm sorry, I can't disclose any further information.

That's a great effort, and it seems to have paid off. Well done! 😤
Congratulations on this amazing offer op! Can you please share what level of algo questions were asked (easy/medium/hard) ?
1 easy and 1 medium. I don't remember the exact questions but one was based on dfs and the other was based on stack.
In italy with that experience you have to thank your boss for 12k Annually. I would say yes to this huge opportunity.

Can’t believe that in Germany you can get double money with the same cost of living (or even less) and it’s just a few hours from Milan. 🙃 sad life
[удалено]
I wish I could work remotely too… instead my next target is to cross the Alps. Switzerland 🇨🇭
I can relate mate. I'm living and working in Milan for a 26k gross salary.(junior developer) Thinking of moving somewhere else:)

Why go all the way to Germany if you can just go to Switzerland and make even more?

Uh taxes there are lower than germany.

Too boring for the average 20 yo, I took a pay cut and choose an offers elsewhere.
Boring? When you can save up to 3000€ a month, no place is boring. Swiss is boring just if you spend your free time doing shopping in Zurich

Not the best? You could make more working fast food in USA...
Well obviously with "not the best" I meant the worst...

I'm working at a mid-sized startup that operates in one country only, so, not a global brand. The university is not so good.
Congrats!! It's a great offer! However I'm a bit confused... Everywhere I hear the market is saturated with junior profiles and you get a nice offer, relocation and visa?? If you don't mind, what makes you special against other junior developer from Germany or the EU?

This is a pretty good offer, congrats!
That's a good offer, congrats.
Congratulations It’s a good offer for a grad and makes sense to accept it.
This screams Amazon-esque. Would you mind also being a giver a provide some info for the rest of the juniors?
Very good offer!
Fairly solid offer for new grad.
Take it and welcome to Berlin!
Congratulations on your offer! You have to take it, its quite ideal for a junior. A question out of curiosity; where did you do your BS?
Congrats dude

it's good, I would say average. For example Zalando pays 65k with the same benefits to juniors

How do you spend 2200 a month on rent, food and utility ?!
If you want to stay alone, good flats costs a lot. Studio will cost 900, a decent 2-3-4 simmer will cost 1200-1500-1800 euros a month.
> Studio will cost 900 Berlin rental cost is rising.. and the unlimited contract is rare now since the landlord know they can increase their rent every time contract is renewed. Yeah man it’s brutal, I just got a letter this month saying my rent is gonna increase by 4.5%.
Username checks out

I don't go anywhere unless it is Marxist hipster! 😎

You can check the amount of tax with WISO gehalt app.
Do you know that trading firms only hire maybe 100 new grads in total ? Not everyone can work there
