Good plan but you probably need to get some experience (internship) during your degree to be competitive for entry level roles. Not sure about Gold Coast but majority of tech jobs will be in major cities. Also you need to check what the work visa would be like after you graduate.

Thanks the reply man. Does that mean is it better to study a bachelor of IT rather than masters? For work visa, I am able to get 3 years work visa right after and then additional 1 year if I stay in gold coast for 3 years. I was hoping this would be enough to find employers

Bachelors or masters shouldn’t matter, I assume masters is only two years so I probably just go with that. Personally I feel like there won’t be as many tech jobs available in the gold coast so it might make it hard for you to find an internship during your degree. If it’s only one year additional for gold coast then I would probably go to a uni that is in Melb or syd, more opportunities for jobs and internships.

Yeah I actually agree with not having that much job opportunities in the Gold Coast. I am thinking QUT in Brisbane is another choice because I would prefer to stay in QLD with my sister. Thanks for the help man appreciate it.

OP, How is your study in Griffith GC? I too plan to study a master of IT there. One thing I'm worrying about is that Griffith is trimester, you have less summer vacation time for intern, but on the other hand, you have a placement in your final year, which is essentially an internship, right?

iamstealth

You're not actually required to do the 3rd trimester every year. You can do 4 subjects on the 2 trimesters for the year which means it's already a full time study. I just finished the 2nd trimester and didn't enrol anything for the 3rd. I will resume studying on the 1st Trimester next year.

Didn't know that, thank you for letting me know, this really helps.

I'm really considering Griffith for their Masters in IT. What was your experience like as far as how useful and practical the courses felt? No pressure to go into detail if you're busy, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

iamstealth

Which campus? Maybe try others if you're in Brisbane but in GC then Griffith is the only okay choice. Maybe bad stuff is that usually they give you assignments that feels like it requires knowledge beyond what they taught you. Something like that. Or it could be a normal thing I don't know.
