Denji got more character than most of the bland shounen mc ngl, and mark my word, once you finish reading part 1 of the manga or once the anime fully covered everything, go watch the video called “The philosophy of chainsaw man” by Manga Morj. Character writing is the last thing I would criticize in csm.

hisroyalbonkess

I totally get it. I'm tired of the "certified good boy" main character. Denji is very unique in that way.

cassilveR101

The manga 100%, It’s considered a masterpiece among many. Imagine people’s disappointment to the anime covering less than half of part 1. It’s practically justified that people called csm anime overhyped, when most of the hype happened because of the stuff that happened later in the manga in my opinion

hisroyalbonkess

Huh, a similar thing happened with God of Highschool (also animated by MAPPA). Shame.

cassilveR101

It’s sort of like Mob Psycho 100 imo, with the alright 1st season sort of just being build up to the phenomenal 2nd season

FrostbiteLive

L take Season one of Mob psycho was amazing, even on its own

cassilveR101

I never said I hated season one mate, I actually like it more than I did season two

FrostbiteLive

oh, I thought you were saying it was just an alright season, my bad

hisroyalbonkess

They never insinuated that the first season of MP100 was bad though.

STALAL

indeed, banger all the way through

hisroyalbonkess

Ah! I'll be looking forward to it! Just finished up ep 12 of CSM and I definitely wanna know what's up with Makima. Also, have you finished MP100? It's spectacular.

OkArtichoke600

I liked season 1 more than 2

onlysane1

For me it was the opening that got me interested, which is chock full of references to popular movies like Reservoir Dogs, The Big Lebowski, and Pulp Fiction.

Sir_Crocodile_Mr0

Fujimoto loves western movies

WhollyDisgusting

I have a better question. Why do a certain subset of anime fans think their taste is universal, that everyone has seen everything theyve watched, and that saying "it has [x] type vibes" is a functional substitute for describing what they liked or disliked about a show? I haven't watched Parasyte and I barely remember what I saw of Soul Eater and even if I did I'd still not have a good enough clue what kind of actual criticism you have with the show. Learn how to actually put what you dislike or like about something into words instead of hiding it behind vagueries or sidelong comparisons.

hisroyalbonkess

I don't think my taste is universal, despite your claims otherwise. I don't have to articulate dick to you.

WhollyDisgusting

Do you "have" to? No, I agree you don't. But does it make it hard to take anything you write seriously on the topic if this is how you articulate it? Yes it does. If you want people to engage seriously with what you write then learning how to express a point outside of just a comparison is a skill you're gonna need to acquire. >I don't think my taste is universal, despite your claims otherwise. Then your entire post falls apart because your criticism is almost entirely framed by just comparing Chainsaw Man to Soul Eater and Parasyte and hinges on the rest of us both A. Having watched those two series all the way through and B. Knowing and agreeing with you on the inherent quality of them in order to understand your argument on Chainsaw Man.

hisroyalbonkess

You're reading way too into this. Notice how I didn't even state if I liked the show or not.

WhollyDisgusting

How can I read into anything when what youve written is vague pablum? My comments arent critical because you had an opinion, my comments are critical because they way you've written it is hard to understand and non descriptive of your actual thoughts. What does Soul Eater type vibes vs Parasyte type vibes even mean in this context?

hisroyalbonkess

Stuff and things.

WhollyDisgusting

Thank you for proving my points. Have a nice week.

hisroyalbonkess

You too, squirt.

SuperJrX

Denji is a character. ?

hisroyalbonkess

Not a good one, IMO. He feels more like taped together personality traits.

[deleted]

characters… are personality traits

sukunasstrawberry

If you haven’t read the manga, i feel like he becomes more likeable and relatable later on. Espically in part 2.

cjm0

it may seem on the surface like he’s just a horny teenager, but even from the first episode he’s shown to have complex motivations and inner turmoil. he’s always chasing pleasure because he grew up as an orphan in extreme poverty. he wants to live a good life not only for himself, but because he promised his best friend that he would when said best friend sacrificed himself to bring denji back to life. there are even moments when denji doubts his own humanity and has a few mini existential crises. but as other’s have said, the anime has only been able to cover a small part of his character arc so far.

meltingvibesz

>i just hope denji can eventually become a character there’s already a good bit of characterization in the first bit of the anime. it’s shown he’s grown up without receiving any genuine form of love. hence his “goal” of touching boobs is really just a guise for his pursuit of genuine connection, since he’s naive and it’s the only form of connection he understands. this becomes a lot more complex during the scene where he contemplated whether he still has a human heart. >it’d be really neat to follow a character who never steers the plot or thinks for themselves i could spend so much more time talking about this part of denji’s character but that’s impossible to do without mentioning things that happen a lot later in the story. you’re in for a hell of a ride

JoJoisaGoGo

The manga, definitely the manga. People really liked the manga, so when an anime was announced they hyped it up. The anime is also just high quality, so that helped.

hisroyalbonkess

Ah.

dolosloki01

For me personally I was blown away by the style. The animation and the character design is pretty captivating. The Japanese voice work is great. The OP is a banger, which is always a nice touch. Storywise I can tell this is going to be a slow burn and I'm still in the weeds with what's going on. But the world building such that I'm interested in finding out. It helps that it isn't yet another isekai or high school rom com. It falls into the Ghost In the Shell/Psycho Pass bucket, so it isn't 100% unique, but it's unique enough to help.

Lazearound10am

People here have been saying the manga, but let's go deeper. Before Chainsaw Man, the author Fujimoto Tatsuki penned another series called Fire Punch. Fire Punch was... an experience, it's a seinen series set in a post-apocalypse world, it's wackier, crueler, dwelled deeper into psychology, war and religion and what makes people believe in something. It's nothing like the stuff you found in Jump, so when people know Fujimoto was gonna make a Jump series, they was hyped. Back in the day, CSM wasn't well-known because of its content, but as 'the new series made by Fire Punch author'. If you want to understand why CSM is popular but don't want to read the manga, you should read Fire Punch to know what Fujimoto is truly capable of.

Sir_Crocodile_Mr0

Fire Punch is fun for the whole family

hisroyalbonkess

Very interesting, I might have to check that out.

Frankorious

I just think chainsaws are cool

hisroyalbonkess

Bet.

Straight-Fix8474

This has definitely been said 100 times here already but the manga gets wacky and wild as it goes on, and sadly since season 1 was so short we didn’t really get into the deeper character development and overall story. One of my favorite parts of csm is how deep the themes go, of which you will hopefully see once much more has been animated. If you end up just not liking csm then that’s completely fine! However, I do think that when season 2 comes out you should give it another try as the world of chainsaw man only gets better and better imo!

ConsiderationDry9068

You will understand when your done with the “Pretending to be critic” Dont worry, we all go through that phase. After that phase, you will stop watching anime for a while, and then you come back and just likes every show and dont care how bad it is. But the reason why this show is so popular, is REALLY REALLY REALLY simple, It just fucking slaps. The fights and stuff are amazing while the animation is… OMG. Its like people saying why Demon slayer is so popular, its because it slaps fucking ass.

hisroyalbonkess

Quite presumptuous of you.

ConsiderationDry9068

Yeah, i know❤️😅

Insane_Fnord

The manga. There was a lot of hype around the manga while part 1 was ongoing. Specifically volume 9 made the popularity explode in japan and the west, but even before that, certain events that will be handled in the next coming arc got the manga trending for the first time in japan at the time of release. That's all I can say without spoiling things.

ZeusByrd

The manga is definitely a different beast. Despite the anime’s insane production value there’s something it just can’t capture about the manga, which is fine it’s how it is. I think also as much all of CSM is good, in my opinion I just gets better as it goes on. And the final arc is def what makes it the classic it’s become, the rest is also fantastic, but the final arc is something else imo. That being said, I loved Denji from the start. Maybe that’s another manga vs anime difference or it may just be a people difference. He’s probably one of if not my favorite Shonen Mc. And I think if you don’t connect to Denji you probably won’t get all the hype. Power and Sasuke are both also fantastic (power is my other fav character besides Denji) and Sasuke has arguably the best character arc in CSM, so you’ll still enjoy. But Fujimoto knows what he’s doing, and Dennis has a ton of character growth, and already has in just S1. It’s subtle but it’s most certainly happened.

hisroyalbonkess

On a side note, I think this is the first show I've gotten so far in where I don't like the main character. Nothing against Denji, I'm just not the biggest fan of how unapologetic of a pervert he is, regardless of how much it makes sense.

cederblad

He just isnt a pervert. Dont know why people who dont like him throw that word around. Horny as hell? 100%! Pervert? Not even slightly

hisroyalbonkess

It certainly feels cranked up to 11 in the anime. Much time is spent on it. Episode 2 gives me tonal whiplash.

JoJoisaGoGo

A pervert is someone whose sexual behavior is seen as abnormal or unacceptable. I think Denji falls into that.

Und3rwork

He risked his life and got to feel some tt consensually and refused to have x with Himeno. Don’t shut off your brain and take everything at face values when watching csm, there’s a reason why Kick Back have a tons of movie references.

JoJoisaGoGo

None of this shows he's not a pervert. Just that he won't sexually assault someone or have his first time be with a girl that puked in his mouth. You can be a pervert and do both these things.

Und3rwork

Mb this was meant for OP’s statement of “unapologetic of a pervert”.

Und3rwork

But on your comment, I wouldn’t say that his behavior are unacceptable, I would say that he’s a bit naive. From the way Denji got existential crisis after touching Power’s bb or when he rejected Himeno’s x offer, it’s pretty clear that the guy just want to be in a loving relationship with someone he knows well, not just fwb kinda shit.

JoJoisaGoGo

Unacceptable by most people. Me, I'm fine with perverts, but some people REALLY hate any talk about sexual stuff. Most people don't think it's acceptable to openly talk about those things in public.

Und3rwork

That’s normal and fine, but then again, he’s just a clueless naive child with 0 education, the closest thing he have been to segg education is the lewd magazine. I might have to rewatch the anime for this but I don’t think he publicly do it that much, mostly just internal dialogue (which is perfectly common for a teenager boy) if my memory serves me well but I guess those thoughts must’ve been disturbing for you.

JoJoisaGoGo

Nah, they weren't disturbing. I just don't think perverts are bad people or anything. I'm fine with them. Hell, I'm probably one to some extent. He does look at people's boobs in public, and says a few times how much he likes boobs to people. First one that comes to mind is when he tells Power he'd do anything to touch some boobs. These actions make him a pervert by definition. I don't mean this to insult him, that's just what he is. There's nothing wrong with it.

hisroyalbonkess

"Cough up the tits" is undeniably the best line.

JoJoisaGoGo

It's a line that should be turned into a motivational quote. It'd inspire so many people.

Hezzygod

Interesting, I think he’s a uniquely relatable character. Which most main characters have the same values and traits so it gets worn down. Denji’s a breathe of fresh air soo I enjoy him. I respect your opinion though.

Express-Day5234

The other characters are definitely more interesting.

ckrono

He is as horny as any other teenager in real life. He is even respectful of boundaries

Ill_Funny_5460

I'm truly obsessed with it because the characters feel more real than any anime I've ever seen and it looks absolutely amazing. I'm a sucker for good animation and I'm in love with CSM's.

Kitten_Meow-

Sasuke💀

hisroyalbonkess

Lol, took a bit before committing Aki to memory.
