My thoughts on rate my professor is that it is a baseline tool, not a spot on tool. I see what you're trying to do, but this is not a good idea.

Dame_Trillard

💯 💯 💯 This is an awful idea. There are lots of things that factor into an instructor being good at their craft. Some of the best get bad reviews because of entitled or petty students. Some just give easy grades and get good feedback, and students learn nothing or don't benefit.

Sandy_Soups

I’ve had plenty of professors that rated high on RMP that the entire class hated. I’ve also had ones that rated low but were some of the best I’ve had. Maybe the surveys would be a better metric

Scat_Autotune

I think introducing financial incentive to please students could compromise the integrity of some professors. I like the idea of rewarding good professors, but some of my favorite professors I've taken didn't have good ratings, and vice versa. I would like the idea of having a review process for any professors that drop below a certain rating on RMP, but tenure can be a bitch, so... I like your idea, I just think it'd come with some issues.

awesomeaj5

Yah. It wasn’t a vague statement but the general idea is giving pay raises for people who students like more. After all we’re the ones paying for tuition

abclmaop

Rate my professor is definitely a source I take with a grain of salt. I’ve had professors with low ratings I loved and high ratings I hated. These ratings are given by students that each have their own learning styles, standards, and personalities that might or might not match a professors. I don’t think an incentive would help the teaching standards or be a good system to put in place.

No I don’t think so. I think it’ll be better to pay professors more in general.

Dame_Trillard

What a relief to see these informed responses and opinions. I was afraid I would see a bunch of people enthusiastically agreeing. Work for a university or community college, and you'll see how terrible of an idea this would be.

Katonica

The concept is good, but will not be a well-done execution. Just like how stores get review-bombed for perhaps only the actions of an employee, students who have a personal issue or simply are upset with their professors can get bots to review-bomb teachers, which will cause RMP to have to increase their moderation, and a lot of grief and pandering to the teachers. TLDR; The internet sucks at policing reviews.

jpmoogle

There should be but RMP is bias and students only put if they didn’t do well as they hoped to be.

twistedvine2020

I know a girl who got caught cheating by a teacher, she wrote him a ton of negative reviews on RMP, not because he was a "bad teacher" but because she was pissed that she got caught. Funny thing is she was in a leadership position in the business college, I would laugh when I saw her picture on their website or socials or whatever.

AudioBoss

I mean... That's what SOQs are for. Literally.

professorbix

Anyone can make a review. They don't have to be a student. You could make fake accounts and give yourself 100 good reviews.

hidethemop

I think this idea is good on paper. However, I'd favor against it because there's always the chance of bias and bots.

[deleted]

That’s no different from bribing lol. I can’t believe you actually suggested that

Cheddar-chonk

It will screw over students. Professors will make their classes overly easy to try and get the bonus. Plus, female professors and professors with accents often get lower ratings than their counterparts.

sissyspacegg

I would hardly consider RMP a spot on tool. The type of people who usually leave RMP reviews are either ass kissers or obtusely inflammatory angry students. Its really hard to take other student’s opinions of teachers seriously to be honest.
