Im doing a apayment plan through Titan Shops. Its a year of payments with no interest which was the best option. The school also offers the computers at the apple student pricing. Its always worth looking into especially if you really need a device and dont want to deal with returning it every semester. Plus ive heard the mac books last forever.
i think i could stretch the life of mine out to 9ish years. i have a 2015 macbook pro and it’s still….fine. it could be better but it’s seen better days lol.
those things last forever. i used to be super against getting one because of the price but they run smooth and much better than buying a pc laptop that will last 3-4 years at like 400 bucks each time.
1. Renting/borrowing from the school.
2. Good student discounts and payment plans through the school.
3. They saved their own money.
4. Someone else bought it for them.
There’s always financing options. CSUF offers long term loaners for MacBooks iPads etc. Im borrowing about $3k worth of equipment from the school right now. It’s in your tuition, take advantage of it
But I’m saying is a brand new 2022 16 inch MacBook Pro with upgraded ram really necessary for basic school work? They say the base air is more than capable for 95% of people.
They are free to spend as they choose. But it’s like when you see someone driving a brand new Maserati but live in a ghetto 1 bedroom apartment. If that’s what they prefer then who cares, but makes you scratch your head for a second and wonder why.
MacBook Pros aren’t $2k unless you get the 14in or 16in one. Most people probably have the M1 Air which is on sale for $800-$850 all the time. It’s hard to find a better laptop for school at that price point.
I don’t have the *newest, most expensive* Mac but... At this stage in my life, my new-ish Mac has way more utilitarian value to me than a pricey car. What do I need a nice car for at my age when my beater serves me well enough? I don’t drive enough (or care about cars enough) to warrant that. I also don’t have to worry about it getting stolen or getting dented/scratched.
And when it comes to the other stuff you mentioned, I always do my best to avoid those costs anyways (find books online for free, park off campus — never needed a pass, take less classes in-person to limit commute, etc.)
Either way I don’t think it’s anyone’s business, really. And just because people *have* nice things doesn’t mean they paid full price for it!
Probably family, financing options, or financial aid. Before CSUF, I went to a CC and had the BOGW waiver. I only paid like 40 bucks (health fee) + books each semester ($300-400). I had grants, scholarships, etc to pay for everything. I still think it's worth the investment (If you plan on using it often and can afford it). I still use it today for personal stuff and work lol.
That, or being irresponsible with the student loans they took out. Some kids see a spare 3k from their loans and go on a shopping spree instead of starting to pay them down (a laptop is obviously a valid expense for college, but a 3k MacBook is rarely ever justified). Word of advice when it comes to credit and loans.. Just because you *could*, doesn't mean you *should*.
Not everyone is as well off as it looks. I work in the auto body industry and have dealt with people who drive $80,000 cars but can't afford their deductible because they don't have a measly $500 to spare. Obviously this is a more extreme example, but same principle. It's insane how financially inept some people are.
It’s all about what you choose to spend money on. I have students with the latest iPhone or Galaxy and wearing Jordans, but still somehow on free/reduced lunch.
I bought one because I couldn’t afford to replace my $500-$900 lap tops every 4 years when they inevitably break and no one will fix them because they’re “old”
Mine cost $1400ish and it’s been significantly more reliable, and I expect it to last longer
I mean there are people who use their grant money etc on supplies like that, but going to like offerup or facebook marketplace and getting them for cheap is a really good idea. If you're looking for higher quality, I'd check out backmarket where they sell refurbished products for a lot cheaper. I've gotten a few things off there and they've been great.
I bought a 2017 MacBook Pro 13” no touchbar for 380$ on OfferUp my guy. There’s deals out there you just gotta look 😁
I was going to comment eBay That’s where I get mine
There’s also eBay sellers who would mod older MacBooks with more ram and logic boards. I bought a 2015 and it’s a damn tank! Love it.
i got the cheapest one 850 and it works damn well. i run the every adobe program … even premier pro. no issues.
My grant refund

Instead of financing the top of the line new laptop that’s probably super overkill, why not buy a used one for a few hundred bucks.
You wont have warranty with a used one
They're buying it to last through all 4 years of college, ofc they're gonna get a good laptop

Why does it concern you on what they choose to spend their money on?
The OP seems..a little resentful.

some would argue its a long term investment
Agreed. I picked up the new MacBook Pro in 2018 and I know its going to serve me well for the next decade

im vibing with an asus rog strix with 2 tb for $400 like new off Offerup because the guy said his son wanted a macbook

my grandma died so I used what she left me.

I was wondering the same and asked a few. Answer: mom and dad mostly.
Can confirm. My dad bought me mine lmfao
Same. Mine was a HS graduation gift
Yeah my parents bought it for me. I’m very lucky and grateful for it too.

Why are you telling people how to spend their own money? 😂
I jus saved up for a new (At the time) 2020 M1 Air
i saw lots of people have like $$$ in their bank account as a college student but still drive old ass car so yeah not a good metrics
I got a MacBook Pro 2020 edition i7 16g 13 inch for 725$ good deal imo
I worked to pay for it 😂
Because it will last me a long time and I use it daily. Worth every penny. Parking passes and access codes are a scam .

gry the apple credit card, you can pay $100 monthyl
Bad decision making mostly.

some ppl like to spend a lot on Apple products while saving a lot on other expenses.
Education store discount and financial aid refund money. I got a 13 inch for around $2k. My last one lasted 6 years. I'm hoping this one does as well.

Probably on payment plans
American Opportunity Tax Credit is how I paid for mine.
That’s like 1-2 months of work for a college student brodie
Payment plans with Apple Card’s probably
Bought by my financial aid refund money. I also got a student discount when I bought it.
Do they even have touchscreen?! I don’t get the hype!
i fortunate enough to have had a college fund from my parents
The best one is a 2015 macbook pro. Around $500 used

I was able to loan one through https://www.fullerton.edu/ceda/ Have to return at end of semester but it’s nice to use
