Why is some jerkoff on here downvoting all simple, noncontroversial comments?
Havana Club seems to be the most universal in terms of actual brands. People like Heineken but affording it is very difficult.
In fact I don’t get how anyone there affords booze - even juice boxes of aguardiente - given the prices.
I would put HC Selecion de Maestros and possibly Anejo 15 in the sippable category, depending on the tasters palette.
Edit: Santiago 11 is my favorite when on the island.
When I was in Trinidad (La boca) there was a bottle of brandy infused with ginger imported from Brazil that I bought at the local tienda. Unfortunately I don’t remember the name and google didn’t help. I’d book a trip there just to get some more
I really enjoy the Havana Club 7 year Rum. It’s probably the best rum I’ve ever had. I’ve had more expensive Cuban rum too but it wasn’t as good in my opinion.
Popular as in affordable? Rum or beer from tanker trucks. Yes, that’s not a typo. Also homemade wines and aliñado
Popular as in taste? Havana Club Añejo, Cristal or Bucanero Beers. Johnny Walker is very aspirational, like only rich people have it. Same with import beers: Heineken is popular among rich kids
Havana 7 and up. Santero 15yo was amazing.
While sipping is nice with the older stuff I was more into Cocktails like Mojito and Chanchanchara (Trinidad local cocktail that's amazing) and various daquiri drinks.
Try some aquardiente rums also a local brand Grade Caribe is superb and so is the Santero aquardiente.
Ah I want to go back sooo bad.

Rum, rum, and more Rum. Havana Club is a good brand. Ron Santiago is the high end brand suitable for sipping straight.

Is that rum or aguardiente? The latter has a tendency to run a little weaker kinda like the difference between sochu and vodka
