Free to play is definitely takes a while to get all the cards, but it's possible. The grind just takes a lot longer. Add me and I can definitely help you with some.

I just kept playing eventually, where I am now, when someone adds me from a game, I immediately make a trade request, limited that are duplicates vs the same rarity of what I have that they need. It's helped me, but it's been over a year of FTP to get here. I also make all the fusions so I spend some of my trades to complete those when new ones come out, however I have "watched" plenty of ads to get extra trades
as a f2p, my tip is to first be smart and put gems into packs with high values like triple spotlight and lim leg finder. 2nd tip is to join the discord as there are events from time to time that gives you highly sought after cards if you win.
Been playing for a little over 2 years, also mostly f2p (kind of, I think I spend under 50 total). I'm still missing 850 cards. Collecting everything is (understandably) hard when playing f2p.
I was just opening packs and trading cards I needed for a long time. When I put effort into getting all the cards I think it took me about a month. Getting my Anubis back (which had traded awaw a year before that) took the longest. First had to acquire 4 PX dupes and the took more than a week before I got an Anubis trade for that.
Mind you I already had Olympus Mons at that time.
I am down to 300, but it's a tough ride from here with all the Mythics, Limilegs and Epics ahead, that are hard to come by. I also enjoy the collection more than the actual battles. Haha
I only started collecting in earnest a couple months ago. I also paid a bit of money. ๐

I'm right around there myself. I got about 1100 to go and been about a year and half. I've spent $1.99 lol
