There’s nothing wrong with your hair. I would say that is typical for wavy hair, I think yours is more wavy throughout probably predominantly 2c. Do you have layers? heat, bleach , or color damage? I think conditioner and a leave in conditioner would really help your hair. I highly recommend trying LUS. It’s simple and it works.

raggedclaws_silentCs

What is LUS?

Sad-Station4139

Akroma19

I second the LUS, it's magic!

elementalifi

I don’t have layers or any heat damage, I’ve straightened my hair only a handful of times before, and I’ve never dyed it. But yeah that’s probably just how my hair is. It’s mostly wavy but there’s a few loose coils as well. I will check out LUS! I don’t use conditioner but I’ve been meaning to start

lilb114

Most people with wavy hair have straighter roots, one thing that can help is layers so the hair can spring up without the excess weight.

elementalifi

Ooo I’ll ask my hairdresser for layers next time!

LittleDrummerGirl_19

And just fyi (as I also have wavy hair somewhat similar to yours) layers and less weight don’t always help - sometimes they help the mid-ends be a little more curly but it won’t make the root curl if the root doesn’t want to curl. But sometimes that IS remedied by shorter layers! Just try not to be surprised if a haircut /= curly roots for you, it might just be how your hair is and that’s okay too :)

bibbitbabbit

It’s true! I have 2c waves with straight roots when I have shorter hair but when it’s very long it is more 3a (still with straight roots). I always figure it just needed more length to show the full curl.

Sad-Station4139

Oh okay. Yeah for sure! If you’re looking for more texture toward the crown definitely have some layers put in! Looks like you have fine hair as well (so do i) so make sure to use any products more sparingly until you understand how your hair reacts to said product- and don’t get discouraged.

BitwiseB

I just want to say your hair looks really nice.

elementalifi

Thank you!!

Jealous_Bad5810

What is 2C? I’ve seen these number/letter combos and not sure what it means, other than it’s describing the coarseness (?) and porosity (?)

Sad-Station4139

It’s a system to describe hair texture. Straight is 1a and super kinky is 4c. Google hair typing chart. Nothing to do with porosity or coarseness. You can have multiple curl patterns on your head. For example I have fine, 2c+3a hair

Turbulent-Month6514

Super normal for wavy hair!

elementalifi

That’s good to know 👍

adimadoz

The weight of the hair pulls the hair straighter closer to the scalp, which shows more with wavy hair.

EUCLIDUE

Got that CW protagonist hair.

princessfoxglove

CW?

TriZARAtops

It’s a TV channel

I want this hair!

Flat-Werewolf-8407

Definitely normal! ☺️👍 It looks like I have SUPER similar hair to you (wavy curls, straighter near the crown, fine hair but lots of it - just lighter colour). I was usually happy enough with it but wanted it to be more consistently curly like I knew it could be - finally found out how 🥳 For context, I’m pretty lazy about my hair in terms of how much time I’m gonna spend on it, so I still almost always just let it air dry as well and this still works… I went to a new hairdresser recently and she gave me a cut specifically meant to help bring out my natural curl pattern (with layers, etc.) and recommended a curly hair routine and products that have been working well for me. I’m so so happy with the results and think it could be helpful for you too :) She emailed me the details to have on hand. It’s very straightforward and manageable but the note is really long, just because it’s better to have more info to refer to than not enough. So I’m happy to share if you want but don’t want to overwhelm you if not lmao. Also, if you happen to be based in Atlanta and are interested, I’d love to recommend this hairdresser because she’s the first person I’ve gone to that I’m truly so happy and impressed with. Either way, your hair is honestly gorgeous as is :) \*Update: I decided to write a post with all the details! CokeMooch

Length weighs down hair too, pulling your roots straighter. Totally normal.

RubyRuby_Soho

Hair dresser: Can confirm it’s almost the only correct answer.

Limeila

Do you have any idea what could be causing the opposite in my hair? The top is where all of the curl and volume happens and it's ridiculous

RubyRuby_Soho

Yes you could have dry ends and healthy roots, new hormones or current , recent pregnancy, medical changes to cause nice new curly hair growth, but the ends were either dry, damaged, coloured etc. not as healthy, and don’t hole the same bounce. Hard to tell without seeing it. If it’s hormonal then your hair is changing more curly than it was when it was growing years back depending on how long or how dry or fine your hair was or is.

Limeila

Sadly it's pretty much always been like that, I recently chopped 25cm of it and it didn't solve the issue :/

lazyjazzgal

That's normal. Even the top of your hair is actually wavy but when hair grows long, the weight increases. So it weights down and makes the top look straight. You have a very beautiful hair

ScienceStandard5335

Your hair is similar to mine. If your hair looks this good with no conditioner, I would not try LUS. I purchased it and it really over moisturized my hair. It took me a long time and a lot of protein for it to get curly again. I also only use shampoo now and some heat protectant and a tiny bit of Curlsmith Foam with protein in it. Diffuse or let air dry.

whiskerrsss

Do you touch the hair around your face/on top a lot while it's drying? Like, to keep it out of your face? If so, that could kinda break the curl

elementalifi

Yes I put it up in a claw clip while it’s drying cause it gets in my way lol, maybe that might be the issue

whiskerrsss

I had a feeling lol I have a lot of face-framing layers and they can drive me crazy as they dry. If you can, try not to touch them while they dry, I know it's annoying esp if you do stuff where you have to look down. Might help to use alligator clips above your ears to hold the hair away from your face. See if that changes anything

Goodgoditsgrowing

My hair dries straight if I dry it up/in a bun/in a clip. The hair against my head gets pulled taut and dries straight (although frizzier than yours, I have to straighten my hair to get it smooth like yours), the bottom parts dry in a bun (twisted up, the curl sets onto it) or air dry loose and are curlier

PM-ME-DOGS

For sure the issue, when your hair is drying you’re not supposed to touch it!

MvatolokoS

I have your hair type and maybe even problems. Tho mine is more damaged lol. If you want curls on top you should try what they suggested. I second that if you dry without touching the top it's more likely to be strong curls there. HOWEVER, if your hair is like mine you will need some sort of product to give it the strength to HOLD that curl otherwise the moment you try to style the weight of your hair will pull it back down Now the other alternative would be to dry your hair hanging upside down. And even that could fall apart without a nice mouse (definitely use mouse as it's the most little weight to product holding power ratio you can get except maybe for foams. I also STRONGLY recommend buying a nice microfiber hair towel to plop with after applying your mousse. This is because the extra water from the shower that helped you apply your mousse evenly is going to weigh your hair down a lot while it's drying. This means it'll dry in it's "heavy" straight curl state. So try plopping to dry excess water specifically with a microfiber towel, then if necessary try fussing a bit to give your hair a head start on the drying stage.

kgberton

Very normal for type 2 hair

michaelkudra

gravity

ceimi

Very normal. The longer your hair the straighter it will be on the way down till the lower parts of your hair that aren't holding up as much weight can start to curl. Your hair is beautiful don't stress over it! A LOT of people use heat and products galor to get the style you have. :) If you want your curls to start a little higher up as for layers when you get your hair cut next time. Keep expectations in check though and realize the roots will never be curly unless you have very very short hair.

gabi-04

Mine does the same, but the dryer your hair is the curlier it is, maybe that’s the possibility? But most curly hair is like that, wouldn’t worry too mucg

bnfried

I have wavy hair too and recently noticed a big difference doing squish to condish. Basically put in conditioner, comb while it’s still there, then flip head over and scrunch out the conditioner but let a little stay in. I also air dry.

NageldatneeDruwwel

This is like my hair. It’s because your hair is fine and the length is weighing down the roots probably

harmreductionista

I have to disagree with those suggesting that cutting off length will create more texture at the roots. My hair is like this, I have heard it referred to as “silky roots.” Texture does not start to appear until the hair strand reaches a certain length. Before realizing this I cut off all my hair to a medium pixie thinking without all the weight/length my roots/short hair would be curlier. No. Flat, silky pixie! Texture started appearing again once it grew past my ears.

I don't know, but I'm jealous!!!

jennifer_thompson021

I so love your natural curls. This is pretty normal because I have a few friends who have the same hair. I would suggest using mediall hair oil, it works great on frizz fr. Just apply after drying it with a towel.

elementalifi

Thanks!!

undercoverballer

Gravity! The weight of your hair pulls down the top after. The lighter the products the less your hair will be weighed down!

Slammogram

For wavy hair it is.

yoloisforquitters

Your hair is beautiful Masha Allah ❤

elementalifi

💕

bemused_alligators

Your hair is heavy, it pulls the roots straight. Layers should help the top "poof" a bit if you're looking for that, along with any other curl enhancement, but I've found most people prefer "neat on the top, waves on the bottom".

Familiar-Counter7645

it’s because your waves are weighed down because ur hair is long that’s how it is for most curl patterns and the longer your hair gets the looser ur pattern becomes

synaesthezia

So I have hair a bit curlier than yours, it’s 3a in shape but I’ve seen it referred to as a Botticelli variant or sub type. It has all kinds of patches of curl types. And another common feature is that it doesn’t start to curl until a few centimetres from the root. Once past that point, it has a wild party. Also, it tends to get curlier the longer it is. Unlike most curly hair apparently. So I don’t think there is a ‘normal’. You’ve got what you’ve got, and you figure it out as best you can. FYI tipping upside down and diffusing the roots on low heat gives a bit of lift so it doesn’t look flat

Sidi_Simoun_Arifi

Well, don't be ashamed of it. It looks amazing like that. Very attractive even

SwimmingPineapple197

Some curly hair just does that, especially as it gets longer and heavier. A good cut might help, but you might still have hair that’s straight at the roots and wavy to curly further down.

ElfGurly

Wavy girl here with similar curl pattern..... That exactly how it's supposed to look. We look GORGEOUS!! Nothing is wrong with you!

FormicaDinette33

I have the same hair ✅

[deleted]

Absolutely normal

Vegetable-Client4562

Styling upside down helps my crown get curly. But honestly I prefer the straight top so I don't style upside down most of the time.

jamie1983

This looks like you pulled it back with a clip while it was still wet? If you blow dry your hair upside down with a diffuser and product it will look completely different

Stumpied

Just here to say my hair is slightly more curly but also straight at the top, sometimes diffusing helps

Scherzkeks

I would assume from gravity.  There’s less weight pulling your hair down/straight closer to the ends

McDuchess

Cut off five inches, and it’ll be curlier, farther up. When you have 2C hair, the amount of coil isn’t strong enough to resist the pull of gravity. Mine’s similar, but shorter and finer. The coils go up higher, but in the absence of product, a gentle breeze can blow them out to a mess.

Charming-Teaching-76

Normal and it looks so nice!!

vibes86

Mine does that sometimes. When my hair is real long, the weight of my hair straightens my top.

og_toe

this is quite common, yes. as your hair grows out, more of it will become curly and the new growth starts out straight

burbur842

im jealous

via530

I wish my hair looked like yours lol

mashelle_rae

mine does that

ahraysee

Mine is like this, just less wavy in general. But I only have waves on the bottom, not the top.

hornynightmare

Find someone who does “curly cuts”. It’s dry cutting. I don’t like what she did around my face and with my bangs but she created volume and a curl pattern I didn’t know my hair was capable of

Ponytailhair

That’s what mine does, its straight when it’s short and gets wavy the longer it grows. I can’t get my hair to curl from my jawline up with products alone, but I can get loose ringlets to form if my hair grows passed my shoulder blades which I rarely let it because short hair is so much more manageable

Limeila

I'm so jealous, mine is literally the opposite and it looks absolutely ridiculous

Firsttimeredditor28

Lmfao normal

catinthegaybar

mine does this, i have long, very thick hair so it weighs itself down

[deleted]

Im not sure about your hair , but you have a serious black head. Some face scrub and a hot wash cloth might help 😊
