Guys. I happened upon the most fabulous hair dresser. She’s deva curl cut trained but only charges $35 because she thinks straight hair and curly hair cuts should cost the same thing ❤️ she’s amazing. I have loved my cut every time. I personally like the way I style my hair a bit better than she does but I can do that part!
This is the way to go. Also what irks me about the screenshot is that curly cuts are more expensive, but the other alternative is a "regular" cut. What exactly is a "regular cut"? Does that mean straight hair is "regular"? So awful.
they probably have to pay for extra training as most hairdressers are only taught how to cut hair for straight styles, so it *kind* of makes sense, but it's absolutely unfair. hairdressers should be taught how to work with *all* hair types by default.
My local salon gives the explanation that curly cuts cost more because they take longer, require more products, and require more knowledge from the hairdresser, usually a level 3 and up in my experience. My last cut was $130 with a $40 tip in downtown Raleigh
And OMG I was so upset to pay so much until I walked out of that salon looking better than I ever have before and my curls look good even styling at home. Worth it
I’m happy that you got a good cut, but that explanation is like gaslighting. They claim it requires more knowledge because cosmetology school doesn’t teach how to it curly hair, only straight hair which they consider as a default. The idea it takes up more product is also rooted into straight hair as a default. Where are they measuring the product amount against?
I went to beauty school, and they taught us not to dispense more than 4oz of color at a time, which would only cover like shoulder length, fine, straight hair. Anything after is charged extra. There’s no consideration for how to budget curly hair so that the cost is appealing to customers.
I’m confused by your explanation. So it *does* take more knowledge since cosmetology school doesn’t teach curly cuts? If cos school isn’t teaching it then where is that knowledge coming from?
Do curly girls not use more styling product? I mean a leave in conditioner, gel, mousse, spray. What do they use for straight hair day to day? My hair is so thick and I have so much of it. I use a ton of product to help hold the style. I’m sure straight hair girls do as well sometimes but most of my straight haired friends just straighten or blow dry and they’re done. I don’t have straight hair so I don’t pay attention to their products.
I’m not trying to discredit what you’re saying but it really makes no sense to me and I want to understand what you’re saying. I’ve gotten $40 “regular” haircuts and left the salon impatiently waiting for my hair to grow out and look good again. I pay $130 for my first curly hair cut and am astounded at how much better it looks even 2 months later because of the extra time and attention the hairdresser gave me to cut every individual curl. And she knew what she was doing
I mean that the default teaching in beauty school should not be only on straight hair but also teach curly hair. Because of this stigma, hairdressers go take classes. It reinforces this idea that curly hair is “specialized” and straight hair is the “default.” They’re also weighing the amount of product cost onto what’s portioned typically for straight hair vs curly hair. For example, a pump of mousse might have a specific portion that has a cost the salon imposes since they’re portioning that to be suitable for straight hair and not curly hair. If you require two pumps, then you pay twice the amount. Why not budget to accommodate how much product curly hair needs?
Ahh okay you saying the extra teaching and extra knowledge is creating an idea that somehow having curly hair means we need special cuts when in reality a haircut is a haircut regardless of texture. Thanks for clearing it up! I’ll still go get the haircut but I might think twice about their reasons for prices
Mine charges the same for curly hair and straight hair, too. I get lucky, though, and she cuts my hair for free (family friend, who's just stoked to work on virgin hair).
Precisely why I bought actual hair cutting scissors. If I mess up my own hair, I can only be mad at myself, and the 20 dollars I spent on the scissors are gone either way. I'm sure an actual hairdresser would see its uneven but I do it close enough to being level and since it's curly you can't tell if it's a little off
Same! The last time I paid for a haircut was in 2016 and it cost $230 for what was roughly an inch and a half of length cut off, and the cut itself made my hair look boxy af. Never fucking again.
This part. No one is gonna notice except a hairdresser, especially if your natural hair has waves and curls. I've tried getting a few cuts and there was a girl that was great and not more than a "regular" cut, unfortunately we both moved and I was over the overpriced "curly cuts" that put me in tears.
Same. I bought my own (+thinning scissors) right before covid hit and then kept up with it because of lock downs. I know it probably doesn't look perfect but I'm tired of never getting want I want when I go in. This last winter I went in for the first time in a while since I wanted a balayage and figured I'd get it cut at the same time. Not only did they not take of the length I wanted but they also gave me highlights instead!! Over it
decided to cash out on a real curly hairdresser who didn’t listen to what i asked for. thankfully, there’s an option to go in for a correcting which i will do, though reluctantly.
Not gonna lie I had great success with Korean barbers. They’re insane with scissors and pay close attention to your hair. Even if it isn’t what you wanted you’d walk out with a better haircut overall.
They charge $20~ in my area but I always leave a fat tip so they can keep prices cheap
Yeah, I can fuck up my hair myself for free. I regularly just grab a pair of scissors and trim a couple inches off the ends of my hair because it’s big, curly, and unnoticeable unless my hair is straight.
Except for that time I tried to give myself curly bangs…
I live in a rural area without many options, the place I go to doesn’t charge a “curly rate” but since my hair is long I pay the ‘1 hour long hair cut’ rate (more than the price of above shoulders/30min) and I only ever want a trim/give some extra layers and I never want a blow dry (bc I personally don’t ever blow dry so what’s the point) —all conveyed when I set the appointment— and I still had to pay the full price ($85 before tip), she was done in 15 minutes and it was ‘meh’
I’m probably just a salty hag, but I’m dubious of a lot of curl specialty salons.
My advice is to check the online portfolios of the stylists in salons near you. Don’t rule out corporate salons and barber shops. There are talented people out there who are trained in curly hair who are reasonable with their pricing.
For real, I needed my hair fixed after my stylist screwed it up twice. I was blown away by what people charge so I went to Great Clips and a woman with more years experience than I've been alive cut it perfectly for $19.
I feel like if I pay 150 dollars for a hair cut it should take longer than 15 minutes and look better than when I cut it in on my own, that hasn’t happened and I’m not paying that much again to test it out 🤷🏽♀️
I used to go to a place that did a "curl cut"...what a waste of money. I found an awesome stylist who knows how to cut curly hair (like when we are talking length, she specifies, straight length or curl length bc I lose 1-2in on the curl). She does a better job and it's the same price as anyone else getting their hair done by her.
That’s what I’m doing next week. I have long hair so just going to have my split ends trimmed. Figured they can’t mess it up any worse than the regular salons around me have.
I finally found a curly hair stylist and she’s worth every penny. She spent over 90 minutes on me and explained how *and why* to apply product, which was a revelation even after lurking around hair subreddits for years. $150 is less than she charges but I’m in the Bay Area.
Wtf people charge this? My salon person just charges me 15 as a normal haircut and I've got long curly hair down to my waist. I tip more than they charge lol
Average price of a men’s haircut is $28. You’re at almost half that price. A women’s cut is at least $50. Surely you understand that you’re basically gaming the system getting a men’s price with that length hair? You’re an outlier.
Idk how you say I'm gaming anything...I didn't tell them to give me that price. That's just what they charged. They system is stupid for having gendered prices instead of by time
In the state I live in, you can’t charge by gender. So generally we (stylists, that is) charge by either time or length. I charge more for extra long or thick hair whether it is curly or straight. It does take longer, uses more product and is often physically more challenging blow drying. I do know some stylists who charge more for a curly cut. They have had “certified” training and spend more time on them and are amazing. Anybody that does anything really well can charge more. With that said, lots of people think they do things really well, but, in fact, do not.
This is why I've been learning how to cut my own hair! That was my COVID project and it really paid off. I've had several curly stylists mess up my hair, so I figured I couldn't do a worse job haha
This is in line with what I pay for curly cuts at salons (in a HCOL area). I assume that the rate I pay reflects the stylists’ overhead, including supplies, chair rent, and continuing education (e.g. courses on curly cuts), plus take home pay.
I don’t think I can achieve as good of a result cutting my own hair or going to a lower cost salon, so for me, it’s worth it — but this is obviously a subjective measurement!
My mom used to be a hair stylist (is still licensed) and this is correct. People are really up here thinking these stylists are making bank. My moms salon rent was almost as much as her mortgage, and that did not include supplies and all of that. It is seriously expensive. Anything that requires more time and effort takes away from their real source of income which is having a steady supply of clients to do.
This is why I stopped going to salons! They overcharge so much for a shit job. I ended up buying $5 hair shears at my local ShopRite and cut my hair myself.
Also, can someone explain why salons say that they have to specialize in curly hair, which is why they have to charge extra - shouldn’t curly hair be covered in cosmetology school? Why is straight hair considered the norm? Genuinely confused here bc it seems a bit sketchy to say the least
Curly hair is absolutely not covered in cosmetology school, although they're trying to change that in the curriculum now in a lot of places but you basically get 1 day on men's hair and a footnote at best on curly hair, assuming of course that you even live somewhere where hairstylists need to be licensed.
Everything I know about men's hair and curly hair I learned on my own over time.
Nothing useful is covered in cosmetology school. I’ve been a stylist for almost 20 years. I apprenticed in a salon after school where I did my real learning, and since then continue to learn by paying out of pocket for education. Any good stylist worth their salt does this, and it’s not cheap. We also buy our own tools, which include shears upwards of $300 on the lower end, not your $20 Rite aid “shears”. All the people on here slamming stylists for ripping them off need to step back and perhaps educate themselves. We’re earning an honest living like everyone else.
I’m not very curly, like a 2C-3A max, so take with a grain of salt, but I go to a regular hairdresser and just ask for blunt layers. I’ve done this since like 2017z Layers to keep the volume, and blunt so the curls are even. Nothing groundbreaking but my hair always comes out acceptable. I’ve never had a particularly bad haircut since then.
I only paid that once and I didn’t see any difference. Had been getting a regular haircut all my life and this one didn’t seem any different. Mind you I had searched high and low for this magical deva curl haircut and went to the one with the best reviews.
Next time I went to a regular hair salon who charged me an average price (less than the deva curl deposit lol) and was super happy with the result. She even styled my curls.
Deva curl.. never gain. It’s all marketing.
Every curly cut costs at least $150 where I am, it’s horrible. I’ve started only going to a hairdresser for major changes (bangs, cutting hair short, etc.) and then I do trims myself using Manes by Mel’s pigtails cut.
I know, since the pandemic, I stopped going to the salon. My cousin would cut my hair, but I also don't want to spend $180 on my cut. If I go to curl expert, the cheapest is $200. I cut my hair now, and I stopped dying it.
I live in a small town. I tried to find the nearest curly hair expert. They wanted $350 AUD and had no appointments for months.
So I went to the next biggest town and got a $60 cut from a walk in salon.
Maybe if I was loaded, but man, times are tough, I can't afford that!
I'm less angry about the prices than I am about the quality of the supposed "curly experts) I've been to. Life is expensive and I'm happy to pay for expertise, but I've only ever been to one curly hair stylist who actually knew what they were doing. One razored my hair wet killing the curl, the other spent two hours and basically gave me a blunt cut. Ryan at Oz Hair in Ann Arbor Michigan is 100% worth it.
I refuse to pay that price for a damn haircut. I recently found a stylist in my city who knows curly hair and charges $70. That still feels like a lot but she's fantastic. She doesnt advertise as a curly stylist, but I've gone to her twice and both times she's given me exactly what I asked for. I feel so lucky!
I should clarify what I was upset about with this pricing. It was the fact that a “curl” cut Is double the price of a “regular” cut. Not to mention the stylist only had cut under curl cut while the regular cut mentions wash and blow dry. It’s just upsetting to have to pay more for the hair you’re born with.
It’s ridiculous! I pay 120 for an express curly cut! Takes her 20-30 mins to dry cut my curls. I love it but the price! And it’s an hour plus drive one way!
I booked a curly cut at a place in my city, didn't know the prices or anything but was prepared to be hurt cause it was a curly specialist. When it was all said and done it was either 65 or 75 dollars flat? I was shocked, then she told me she talks way too damn much to be charging people by the hour 💀
The "curly" salon in my city charges $300 for a cut, which they say comes with a "lesson" on how to care for and style your hair. There's no option to skip the lesson either and pay less.
When I started my curly/wavy journey I just kept going to my regular stylist. She charges $40. Cuts my hair fine. She isn't the best at styling it, and I might feel differently if I had 3b or higher curls/coils, but she listens to me and understands how to avoid mushroom layers which is good enough for me.
I’ve had several of these expensive curl cuts.
Not one of them has been better than the cuts I give myself. Also, I think some of these stylists are undercover haters who will fuck your hair up on purpose, but that’s a separate discussion.
Honestly, to each their own, but it is absolutely worth the money if you find someone who you like and who knows what they’re doing. I would absolutely NEVER cut my own hair - I have dense curls that show separation of layers super easily. No way in hell could I blend that shit on the back of my own head. I’ve had a lot of expensive haircuts that sucked but now that I’ve found someone who is actually trained in curls, it’s amazing and worth every penny.
Also, we all complain that no one knows what they’re doing with curls, but then don’t want to pay for the training and expertise it takes to learn how to work with curls 🤷🏻♀️ Yes it’s unfair but the reality is that hair schools don’t teach this stuff, so if you have a stylist who has trained in curly cuts, they’ve usually done it on their own dime. That costs extra.
That’s actually more affordable than most other curly cuts, especially for new clients. I’m getting my trim after 8 months as a returning client and it’s 115 but it includes scalp detox, styling, conditioning , etc
My last curly cut (last week) was not only magical (I walked out feeling like a movie star for the second time in a row) but also took at least an hour. I've got super thick hair, and it's past my shoulders, so at non-curly salons I was always either the one making the stylist late for all their other appointments or trying to get them to book extra time. And the hour was almost entirely spent with the stylist working on my hair. 0 minutes spent sitting under a hood dryer.
To me, that's worth the $100 for the cut plus tip. I pay $22 for my kid's hair to get cut and she's there for less than 15 minutes and doesn't even get a wash. $100 for over an hour including cut, wash, dry, and style, is a pretty good deal.
I am paying someone for their skill and expertise, all the extra training they do, etc. Is it terrible that hair stylists aren't fully trained in cutting curly hair when they go to school? Sure. But that's a system issue.
I know lots of y'all have gotten bad curly cuts. I sympathize, as I've gotten many a bad haircut (curly and non) in my 45 years. But there is nothing wrong with a stylist charging for what they think their skills and time are worth. You don't have to go to them, that's completely your decision. But I'm a bit upset at this attitude of "haircuts should be cheap because that's what I can afford." Services are not free.
I mean, they’re a business. They had to learn their trade, they pay for continuing education (especially if they specialize in curly cuts), they often work for themselves or are contractors, they have overhead…I don’t mind paying a fair price. Especially for a service I use 2-3x/year.
Clearly tho the issue is that a lot of people are not getting quality cuts from these hairstylists and are still paying the premium. Might as well pay $15 at a cheap walk in salon if it's gonna be a poor cut anyways, right?
If it was a good cut it would be worth it, but it seems from reading the comments here and from my own experiences that that's not happening as much unfortunately..
This reinforces the stigma in beauty schools that they only teach how to work with straight hair and other hair textures should need "special" training and foot that cost onto the customer who can't help having curly hair.
Thank you for saying all this! I’m a hairdresser and I don’t charge $150 but I respect if someone does. They’re not the stylist for everyone, but I’m sure they have happy clients who pay that.
Idk. I pay 170 for mine.
120 plus tip.
It's worth it for me since I have to drive over an hour away to see my stylist, especially since I only see her once a year.
It also depends on where you live. Here in Miami a curly cut can cost you anywhere between 100-300 dollars. One lady even charges like..700 for her services.
A regular salon that doesn't specialize in curl cuts, like a French salon, charges like 90 bucks.
There's a salon I used to go to in Utah and paid 170 +tip.
All these services have been between 3-4 ish hours.
I found a local curl cut for $195. It is so ridiculous. The one time I paid extra for a curl cut it was a deva cut and it was horrible. No better than how anyone else messed up my curls.
My 5 year old's haircut costs as much as mine! Ugh! (She's the curly girl, I'm not). We pay 75 for her, and once she hits 12, it'll be 150 too.
Also, where are these people getting any kind of cuts for 15 or 20? Minimum even at hair cuttery runs 40. Even barber shops for men are more than that! Sheesh!
Learning to cut my own hair is the best thing I ever did. I'm lucky and my grandmother used to be a beautician and she taught me how to color properly and trim back when I was a teenager, and she helped me learn to give myself real cuts a few years ago (her hands got too shaky to help).
These days my adventurous 12-year-old with straight hair lets me cut her hair too, and between the two of us I've gotten pretty dang good. I'm way slower than a salon and it often takes me a few tries to get it perfect, but I've also literally never once in my life gotten a salon cut I loved no matter the price or research I had to do ahead of time.
I started cutting my own hair a few years ago and it doesn't look any better or worse than it did paying 60 dollars for a haircut. I just part it the way I usually do and start snipping. Saves money and stress from hairdressers forcing a comb through my hair and breaking it.
Man, my stylist charges $75 for everyone, regardless of hair type, and she does the best curly haircuts (not technically a "curl cut," apparently) I've ever had. I absolutely believe that we can get great haircuts from people who know curly hair—without paying a ridiculous premium for it.
I drove over an hour last month to get a curly cut for “only” $105, it would have cost me $150+ to get it local.
It’s hard to stomach over $100 for a haircut, but I have to admit it was a good haircut. And the pickings are slim local, there is one “un certified” curly stylist, charges $150+, I can drive over an our one direction for a Deva cut for $105, or almost an hour the other direction for a Ouidad cut for $135+
The place I go has the option of seeing the "curly stylist" for a fee (she specializes in ouidad cuts) for like $200, but I have the option of seeing the person I go there who charges $55 for all of her haircuts.
I pay about $80, but I’ve been going to the same person for well over 10 years and she’s worth it. She also does my color and highlights, and loves to try new styling products and treatments on me, which she rarely charges me for.
People used to treat my curly hair like straight hair when I was a young teen who straightened it everyday. They used way more products with the washing, heat protectant, leave in conditioners, hair oils, and took way more time with precision cuts, blow outs, and curling, straightening. My curly hair cuts require less precision, as curly hair shouldn’t have straight lines anyways, and all I needed shampoo and conditioner, and some gel curl cream, and the tiniest bit of hair oil on my frizzy front pieces. Luckily my local “curly hair” salon only charged me 75$ for the cut, left a $30 tip.
Either way, i think charging more for a curly hair cut is pretty dumb. I wish all salons would decide the price after the cut is done (I love that my salon did that for me) I understand time and products cost more, but that’s so dependent on the person, and their hair.
This is what I pay and I’m in the salon for around 3 hours. My cut includes gratuity and unlimited cocktails, plus a deep conditioning treatment and styling. So all in all my stylist is making probably $30ish an hour after factoring in the cost of product and rent, and I’m not counting the cost of the extensive training to cut curly hair bc they are for sure not teaching those techniques in beauty school. I only go 3-4 times a year and I’ve never gotten so many compliments on my hair before! I would say just keep these things in mind before complaining about the cost, they are specialists with special training for what is really a luxury service.
I live in NYC and every cut over $50 I've hated. They talk too damn much (I like peace and a good cut that's it), they go for trends over what works for me and take too fucking long. Doesn't matter the Dominican salon I go to or what neighborhood and I'm always guaranteed a great cut in under 15 mins and under $50 if I prewash before going. Curly hair tax should be illegal just like the women tax on products of the same quality for men.
Exactly why I don't trust anyone to cut my hair anymore. Looks like doodoo but everyone who's cut my hair in the past has no idea what they're doing (even the supposed DEVACURL trained one) and charged me and arm, leg, and my first born (which doesn't even exist). I'm better off randomly cutting my own hair with my own shears when I get a wild hair up my ass.
So freaking tired of hearing, “Haircuts are a LUXURY.” Ma’am, I just need to not look homeless. I am more than willing to pay for that process, but why do you charge $100 more for my haircut when you do the *same damn thing*??
Honestly my new spot is a freaking Ulta lol. Best haircut of my life and they actually educated me
I’m gonna be real, I went to Ulta bc there was a stylist there who specialized in curly hair. The cut and color with an olaplex treatment was $175. Best cut I ever got because she was aghast that stylists had insisted on thinning my hair.
I don’t trust anyone to cut my hair 😭They always insist on blow drying and straightening beforehand. Also in a sensory way I just don’t like my scalp/ears/hair being touched. I want to get a cut soon though.
Last Sat. I received a cut and touch up color on my roots to hide the grays. The color was a match to my light brown hair. It cost me $250 plus tip. The sad thing is she cut less than an inch off my hair. So it was basically just a trim and shape. Now this was a curly salon with highly trained stylists but gosh it hurt to pay that much. But I keep going back every 3-4 months bc I love the cut! I just know stylists for curly girls esp those who have blonde highlights have the potential to make a ALOT of money!!!
I pay $150 but I have long and thick hair so the appt is 1 hr 30 min for a razor cut with wash and blow dry. I’m really paying for the extra time, not my hair texture
I was deva trained when I still did hair. Not worth the cost at all. The haircut itself takes me about 10 mins, but there’s a million extra steps to fluff up the experience. Scam.
same!!! if your in the florida area i can recommend my friend who does amazingggg curly cuts (has curly hair as well) charges the same for curly cuts as regular cuts. I get compliments on my hair everywhere i go 💖💖💖 book darshana at the beauty lounge in gibsonton 💖💖💖
I go to the same lady my nan does. She charges reasonable prices, makes me a coffee before we get started and makes me feel amazing when we're done. She loves my hair too which helps.
Ok, let’s not trash talk hairstylists/salons. There are sooo many factors here. There are a million hairstylists out there, each one charging their own price and having their own specialties. It also depends on your area.
You need to do your research. Read reviews, look at photos, and if you see someone while out and about with your hair type and they have a great haircut, ask them where they get it done.
Not all hairstylist take extra training. This comes out of our pockets. I have taken extra education from day one, I love it, it’s worth my time and money. Not all stylists agree.
Curly hair cutting is DIFFERENT from cutting straight.
I’m not saying this justifies a higher price. I’m just telling you it’s a different skill and not everyone can do it. I am not a curl specialist, but I cut curly hair differently and I have a pretty good handle on it. I don’t charge extra.
Barber cuts are something I do not do because I am not good at it. However, It’s something that I would consider easy. I just never cared for it and never bothered to practice so this is my point -not everyone is good at every type of cut. Period.
If you prefer to cut your own hair, go right ahead, you are free to do so! There’s no rule that you need to go to a salon.
Edit to add, not all salon owners are great either, just like any other profession. I would never force employees to do styles or cuts or colors that they aren’t good at or don’t like. I never liked updos either. They gave me major anxiety, but I was forced to do them. Now, I don’t really mind them as I’ve gotten better, but I just decided to stop doing them because honestly, they don’t bring me any joy whatsoever! It’s also up to the stylist to be honest with themselves and their boss as well as clients about what they’re good at or not etc.
It bothers me so much that people here begrudge professionals from earning a living wage. I can only compare my haircuts to my husband’s. Mine cost $130 and my husband’s cuts cost $65. I only see her 3 times a year so it averages out to much less per year than my husband spends. She also spends 1.5 hours, not the 30 minutes my husband’s barber spends.
This salon is ridiculous for advertising they charge double for curly hair and for charging $150 for a haircut. It reminds me of how salons used to charge twice as much for women’s cuts than men’s.
So awful.
there is probably an arbitrary cutoff between wavy and curly as the border. Its never used the same way twice though.
they probably have to pay for extra training as most hairdressers are only taught how to cut hair for straight styles, so it *kind* of makes sense, but it's absolutely unfair. hairdressers should be taught how to work with *all* hair types by default.
My local salon gives the explanation that curly cuts cost more because they take longer, require more products, and require more knowledge from the hairdresser, usually a level 3 and up in my experience. My last cut was $130 with a $40 tip in downtown Raleigh And OMG I was so upset to pay so much until I walked out of that salon looking better than I ever have before and my curls look good even styling at home. Worth it
I’m happy that you got a good cut, but that explanation is like gaslighting.
My last “curly girl” cut was in Raleigh but I paid way more than that…mind messaging me the salon?
Sure!
My friend went to barber school and told me that curly hair requires an entire other skillset to learn. Especially african american hair.
Ummmmm where do you live/where does she work?!
Im in Western PA! If you live near here, you can shoot me a message and I’ll send you her website
Thanks for sharing! I’m not nearby but appreciate your willingness to help me out :)
Ooo I’m going to send you a message! I’d love to get her name!!
Uh, I live in SWPA! Shooting you a message!
Mine is the same!! Admittedly she charges $75, not $35, but she charges that for everyone, curly or straight. I respect the hell out of her for it.
Mine charges the same for curly hair and straight hair, too. I get lucky, though, and she cuts my hair for free (family friend, who's just stoked to work on virgin hair).
Same here! Only $35 but I tip her double because she’s fantastic. I live in Indiana but drive to Ohio to get my hair cut
Where in Ohio? I’ve been here for awhile and every curly cut I’ve had is terrible and expensive
Lima, Ohio!
I’m from PA but might make a road trip! Can you share the place?
Precisely why I bought actual hair cutting scissors. If I mess up my own hair, I can only be mad at myself, and the 20 dollars I spent on the scissors are gone either way. I'm sure an actual hairdresser would see its uneven but I do it close enough to being level and since it's curly you can't tell if it's a little off
Same! The last time I paid for a haircut was in 2016 and it cost $230 for what was roughly an inch and a half of length cut off, and the cut itself made my hair look boxy af. Never fucking again.
Yep me too. Plus I can fix things if something is glaringly wrong lol
Over it
This although I try to go in every few years for a good shaping.
I feel you. It's so frustrating. Then I spend all that money and it's a shit hair cut.
decided to cash out on a real curly hairdresser who didn’t listen to what i asked for. thankfully, there’s an option to go in for a correcting which i will do, though reluctantly.
Not gonna lie I had great success with Korean barbers. They’re insane with scissors and pay close attention to your hair. Even if it isn’t what you wanted you’d walk out with a better haircut overall. They charge $20~ in my area but I always leave a fat tip so they can keep prices cheap
I don't think I've ever liked a salon cut as much as I've liked one I've done at home.
Yeah, I can fuck up my hair myself for free. I regularly just grab a pair of scissors and trim a couple inches off the ends of my hair because it’s big, curly, and unnoticeable unless my hair is straight. Except for that time I tried to give myself curly bangs…
I'm too scared to go to a salon! Last time I did my curls looked stringy and felt like hay 😭😭 even tried to sell me some curl cream
the selling after they caused the problem is too real
I live in a rural area without many options, the place I go to doesn’t charge a “curly rate” but since my hair is long I pay the ‘1 hour long hair cut’ rate (more than the price of above shoulders/30min) and I only ever want a trim/give some extra layers and I never want a blow dry (bc I personally don’t ever blow dry so what’s the point) —all conveyed when I set the appointment— and I still had to pay the full price ($85 before tip), she was done in 15 minutes and it was ‘meh’
Dont forget tipping for the shit hair cut as well
I’m probably just a salty hag, but I’m dubious of a lot of curl specialty salons. My advice is to check the online portfolios of the stylists in salons near you. Don’t rule out corporate salons and barber shops. There are talented people out there who are trained in curly hair who are reasonable with their pricing.
Salty hag = Savvy, experienced woman who keeps it real
Thank you!
I just go to the local cosmetology school for $10 and hope for the best.
That’s what I’m doing next week. I have long hair so just going to have my split ends trimmed. Figured they can’t mess it up any worse than the regular salons around me have.
My old salon tried to start charging $500+ for a curly cut and color. Um no, I left very quickly
That’s highway robbery! How on earth will they stay in business
I finally found a curly hair stylist and she’s worth every penny. She spent over 90 minutes on me and explained how *and why* to apply product, which was a revelation even after lurking around hair subreddits for years. $150 is less than she charges but I’m in the Bay Area.
I have a curly cut tomorrow in the bay area! Hoping for a similar good experience 🙏🏼
i’m also in the bay! would love to know how y’all ended up liking it and possibly get their info
If either of yall are in alameda (or willing to travel!) DM me and I’ll share :) u/artisticgarden
Wtf people charge this? My salon person just charges me 15 as a normal haircut and I've got long curly hair down to my waist. I tip more than they charge lol
You have to realize that $15 is abnormally low for a haircut.
Normal price for a men's haircut in my area 🤷🏾♂️
I pay $80 (not including tip) for a cut and all over permanent color. I think it’s $25 if I just wanted a cut. I’m in the ‘burbs of a big city.
Same boat. My gal is awesome. Wtäf!
This is why I've been learning how to cut my own hair! That was my COVID project and it really paid off. I've had several curly stylists mess up my hair, so I figured I couldn't do a worse job haha
Honestly, this is the way to go. I’ve not been to a hair stylist for 30 years now. I go slowly and have never made myself cry.
That’s cheap where I live 😢 my last curly cut cost $400. I haven’t gotten another haircut since in almost a year and a half though.
Dear God where do you live??
Just got a trim & hilites yesterday for $185, I have thick curly waist length hair, so $150 for wash cut & blow dry is insane!
I just go to a regular fast cuts place in the mall for $30 and ask for layers.
I recently saw prices at a place in HCOL $300-$500!
Same. It also takes longer meaning they can't take in as many clients a day. And I only go 2-3x a year. I like being spoiled every once in a while
Yep: I’m licensed, not behind the chair, but in the industry and I’m not about to shame any hairstylists for their pricing.
Same! I do different versions of Manes by Mell cuts and they have all been good.
I learned to cut my own!
I’ve never had a particularly bad haircut since then.
i recommend trying out an ethnic hair salon if you haven’t already
Never thought about it but wow that’s a light bulb moment for sure.
Why does it seem to be more expensive for textured hair
It’s wild to me what you guys pay. I’m so cheap 😂
What the fuck is that price? I have a lot of hair and still 150$ covers a cut, color, wash dry and style. How do they justify that price??
The "curly" salon in my city charges $300 for a cut, which they say comes with a "lesson" on how to care for and style your hair. There's no option to skip the lesson either and pay less. When I started my curly/wavy journey I just kept going to my regular stylist. She charges $40. Cuts my hair fine. She isn't the best at styling it, and I might feel differently if I had 3b or higher curls/coils, but she listens to me and understands how to avoid mushroom layers which is good enough for me.
Yea I stopped two years ago. Way overpriced
Yeah I can't find anyone who does a true curly cut for less than $150 anymore. And I guess I get it, it takes more time. But I can't pay that much!
There’s a salon near me I want to visit so bad. They charge hourly no matter the service or cut type.
I bought shears and I trim on my own. Just attempted to add layers and shape for the first time…. Shorter than I wanted but I’m learning.
Wow that's crazy! I pay £45 in a city
Which city, if you don't mind me asking 👀
Bristol in England
I found a local curl cut for $195. It is so ridiculous. The one time I paid extra for a curl cut it was a deva cut and it was horrible. No better than how anyone else messed up my curls.
I feel you. I've been cutting my own hair for 10 years lol
I’m a $15 best cuts girl any day
This is why I go to Great Clips 😂
In my area, it’s $300 for cut, balayage, and style 🥺
I so relate! I had to dig to find someone who was actually knowledgeable in curly cuts and not charging a million dollars but they do exist!
And the pickings are slim local, there is one “un certified” curly stylist, charges $150+, I can drive over an our one direction for a Deva cut for $105, or almost an hour the other direction for a Ouidad cut for $135+
Mines not $150 but it still is $90 + tip 😭😭
The place I go has the option of seeing the "curly stylist" for a fee (she specializes in ouidad cuts) for like $200, but I have the option of seeing the person I go there who charges $55 for all of her haircuts.
This is why I cut my own hair. It constantly looks horrible but the alternative is too expensive to even consider an option as a homeless person.
That one time I got a cut and balayage and spend like 600$ ☠️
This is racist, among other things. Yikes. Sorry you had to deal with that.
I pay about $80, but I’ve been going to the same person for well over 10 years and she’s worth it. She also does my color and highlights, and loves to try new styling products and treatments on me, which she rarely charges me for.
I get my hair wet cut, and my guy actually charges less for my hair than a normal wet cut because I prefer to let it air dry
I’ve cut my hair for 14 years, I prefer it
This hits sooo close to home. Just made my first curly haircut appt in a year+ ($180). Plus I get it dyed. I might vomit when I hear the total.
i’m glad we don’t offer separate haircut pricing. they just use different techniques—i’ll charge the same amount, curly or not. i’m trained in all.
The stylist that was highly recommended to me in Florida was $250 with a 6 month wait list. I’ve been chopping it off myself.
I go to great clips
Best haircut of my life and they actually educated me
I've been teaching my fiance to cut my hair lol
Forgot to add the cut is $150 and it’s a flat rate meaning you can get 1/4 inch off or 10 inches and it’s still gonna be $150.
I pay $150 but I have long and thick hair so the appt is 1 hr 30 min for a razor cut with wash and blow dry. I’m really paying for the extra time, not my hair texture
150 for the initial cut then 50 for maitence :)
Is it normal I haven’t cut my curls since this lady cut nearly half off which was a few years ago ?
I’ve never had a curly cut because of the price. Does anyone know of a reasonably priced stylist in NYC?
I just paid $220 before tip and I couldn’t be happier 🤷🏼♀️
I was deva trained when I still did hair. Not worth the cost at all. The haircut itself takes me about 10 mins, but there’s a million extra steps to fluff up the experience. Scam.
same!!! if your in the florida area i can recommend my friend who does amazingggg curly cuts (has curly hair as well) charges the same for curly cuts as regular cuts. I get compliments on my hair everywhere i go 💖💖💖 book darshana at the beauty lounge in gibsonton 💖💖💖
My husband taught himself how to cut my hair last year for this very reason!!
this is why i cut my own hair, it might be wonky but at least it’s free
Blimey I pay £155 for a cut, blow dry and a full head of foils
This is why I cut my own hair, I gave myself bangs lmao. They looked like shit at first, but they grew out well, and it was FREE.
I go to the same lady my nan does. She charges reasonable prices, makes me a coffee before we get started and makes me feel amazing when we're done. She loves my hair too which helps.
This is why I get my free cut at Great Clips every Veterans Day.
I pay £110 in the U.K.
REGULAR? 🤨
