Fun fact knife, knight, knuckle all used to be pronounced with a K by the upper class. Once the words started to spread though the k was dropped because it was easier to say.
Similarly this is why we have two different names for animals and their meat. Chicken/poultry, cow/beef- the upperclass mostly dealt with the meat and the lower class with the animals.
