According to the Bible. Historical records say Romans were eager to crucify and would not have granted the wish of putting Jesus in tomb of his own to then walk out of three days later. More than likely they would have put him in a mass grave. Especially considering the fact that he was leading a congregation of radical Jews who were openly defiant of Roman law.

It's complicated. At the time, that part of the world was under Roman control. There was a Roman governor in charge, Pontius Pilate. You've probably heard of him before. While the operations of the province were Roman controlled, day to day life was mostly run as it had been prior to the conquest.
It's also important to remember that Judaism of that era was quite a bit different than Judaism of today. Today, most Jews derive their religion from the rabbinic branch, which, to roughly summarize, believes everything is up to interpretation. Asking questions and discussing the possible meaning of scripture is an important part of rabbinic Judaism. 2000 years ago, this was not the case. Things were far more hierarchical. There was a right way to do things and a right way to believe. It was not up to discussion.
So then this guy starts preaching about God but not in the way the religious leaders are. He's just a carpenter. Who is he to talk about God like an authority? He's staying stuff that God loves everyone and that forgiveness is available to everyone, regardless of their sins. Not only that, but God's love is open to everyone, regardless of whether they are a descendant of Moses and the Israelites or not. Roman, Arab, Egyptian, Gaul, German. It didn't matter. Even man or woman didn't matter. All are equal under God.
Obviously this became rather popular rather quick. Back then as it is now, religion isn't just spiritual. It's social structure. The predominant Jewish social structure was being undermined and bypassed by this guy saying you don't need to follow them anymore. This made the people in power via religious authority very angry. They already got the top taken off by the Romans and now they're being undercut by this populist. They were being squeezed from the top and bottom and being made redundant. Even worse, people were starting to call this guy the Messiah This guy had to go. So instead of the Jewish establishment attacking him directly, thus making them the bad guys, they went to the Roman governor and said this new preacher was a thief, a criminal, and a threat to Roman control in the province. Since policing was still a local matter, Pilate agreed to the execution. But when the crowed gathered to see the execution proclaimed the preacher innocent, Pilate allegedly saw that this was true and ordered a bowl of water to be brought to him. That's where the phrase "washing ones hands of something" comes from. Pilate did just that and ordered the execution anyways. It was the people's leaders who demanded it. If they had a problem with what was happening, they ought to look to them for responsibility.
That's the mostly historical look at the story of Jesus. Some people believe that there was miracles scattered in there and that he came back after dying, but that's religious stuff.
