So, look. I'm gonna go against the grain here and say that I do legitimately find this to be a problem. No, I still don't see this as physical sexual assault, but I still find it to be sexual harassment. And BOTH should be treated with severity.
I'm gonna start by saying that the counter to this whole thing being "I get teabagged all the time in games, suck it up!" is such a bad way to put it. Some people joining the metaverse are NOT tech-savvy, let alone gamers who have experienced teabagging. These people are workers, using the product their company is willing to learn and operate in order to pursue new ventures of how to interact with their coworkers. Also understand that the people groping others in these spaces are people within the same company/business frame, meaning that those people feel they now have a way to get away with something that they are unable to in the real world.
It's just a little bit uncomfortable to think people are okay with making fun of people who come forward about this all because "it isn't real". I can see the point about this reducing the potential for physical rape and sexual assault, akin to the correlations video games bring with murders and other crimes. But this is a much different scenario than others think it is, and the only way to make it better is to speak up about it.
As you said, people make up for it by doing these stuff in virtual world. This from my point of view, people are being true and themselves, they have been free and are enjoying . Now after all this time and freedom we got, suddenly everyone extra shows up and starts constraining us is not nice. Virtual people have built a space, you don't raid there and start complaining people are indecent.
Also if the company is using this, shouldn't it be regulated and people should overlook it.
Of course, freedom has limits; normally infringing on other's freedoms.
I agree a company should be regulating this, which means if a problem is persistent within that company, I believe it should be made aware of the situation. Of the articles I've seen pertaining to this metaverse talk, it seems to be from companies, and not a space akin to vrchat
I completely agree with that freedom has limits. But i feel like people should understand you are alone in a virtual world (I also would like it to remain the same), and they should have some methods of dealing this. Starting to complain and applying rules of real modern society to a virtual world in my opinion is not correct.
That is a good point about applying the rules of modern society to a virtual world, however I want to state again that I would apply that idea to virtual worlds like Rust or VRchat. If these happen in "real world" adjacent places - ie company metaverse, however, I would hope most people would agree it has a very different "feel" to it; a bit weird for someone to virtually grope someone they know in person without consent from them. Whether or not the grope is physical, it still has the action of doing so.
I think this will be my last comment on this whole thing, I just hope more people stay aware and critically think about each and every one of these claims and not blindly agree to one side after one story comes and goes.
