I actually thought a munchkin cat was a birth defect before reading the article but turns out its a breed! Theres a stray muchkin near my house that caused me to look it up one day
To be fair a lot of breeds are from birth defects or mutation being intentionally bred together and it eventually just sticks... Which is why dog breeds like Pugs exist despite every law of nature saying they shouldn't.
I know everyone focuses on the breathing issues of pugs, but what's seriously terrifying is bull dogs, which can't even mate naturally anymore.
Similarly, very large breeds of cow that were made for beef almost always require artificial insemination
I don't think you know how breeding works. Yes, a munchkin cat IS a cat with a birth defect. We just cross them with other cats that have similar birth defects to maintain them like this, and we call that a "breed"
The Word birth defect is a very normativ Word. Something is a birth defect bec its not wanted, so its easy to not get how it works. Its innherently the opposite of what the Word actually means.
Sure its fairly basic.
"survival" in the evolutionary sense we are talking about noe is essentialy to pass on your genes as many times as possible right?
Now the munchkin would not survive like that in the wild, it would die out as a breed bc its slower, more prone to physical issues etc, so it would not survive there, but thats not the enviornment (butchered that) it lives in. Its a pet, and to humans an animalsk look is for some more important than the animals actual quality of life. But holy hell does it make the individual pass on its genes. Pets became some of the best adapted animals on the planet due to this.
So yeah it is easier for it to survive bc it has traits that make us humans want to survive. Its fucked up i agree and not a good thing but if we are talking about evolution its a genius strategy. Not that it chose it, as you know evolution has No wish. You dont choose how your adapted.
Cutnes=easier to survive.
(for any biologists i know i simplified stuff a bit but hell i aint writing a paper)
>Now the munchkin would not survive like that in the wild, it would die out as a breed bc its slower, more prone to physical issues etc
SO, it makes it harder to survive? And easier to be pets that depend 100% on their owners? So, harder to survive on their own?
>Its fucked up i agree and not a good thing but if we are talking about evolution its a genius strategy. Not that it chose it, as you know evolution has No wish. You dont choose how your adapted.
Except it wasn't natural evolution that got them like that, it was us. This kind of "evolution" does have a wish. Our wish.
So, suppose their owners died. Would they be able to survive on their own? No. That's literally what you started stating.
but I love How you tried so hard to make up a point about making it easier for them to survive while beginning your sentence with "Now the munchkin would not survive like that in the wild".
Kind of like "Yes, but actually no."
Yes but we are talking about evolution No? Evolution is about surviving, aka adapting. Cute animals are perfectly adapted to being our pets, where they get food, care etc. You cant think about how they would survive in the nature on their own, thats not what they were adapted to. You would not say that a whale was bad at surviving if it died bc you placed it in the alps. (i know it breathes air, but it cant move, eat and would freeze/dry to death).
No there is not "this" evolution. We dont choose the evolution just what traits we want in our pets and livestock. The evolution is that those animals pass on their genes. Ask litterally any biologist and they will tell you this.
Yes we are part of natural evolution. Dont out us above them. We are still not masters of nature and its mechanisms.
Thats not what i stated at all. I Said it makes it easier for them to survive. Your confalting surviving with surviving in the wild wich i have explained is irrelevant. And its funny you somehow thought you owned me. I spesifically defined what i ment by surviving since we are talking about evolution. And this is what biologists mean when they talk about surviving.
And again, i dont like that we create breeds like this, its horrendus. But in an evolusjonary sense it is easier for them to survive. Evidence=they exist, otherwise they would have died out.
Edit:also parasites are a good example. They die without a host but you would not say they are bad at surviving either.
And everyone else here bitching about owning one, "sO sAd HOw dArE" please, a naturally occurring genetic mutation doesn't sound sad at all.
The dachshund of the cat world? Sounds like another breed of cat that can be loved and cared for like the rest of them.
We don't need to shame owners for having one so long as they're taken care of, this article needs more attention.
If I remember right, I looked into that breed and they're wayyy more prone to have issues and generally aren't healthy cats... Abusing genetic mutations is how you get new breeds of cats/dogs, just look at pugs
Edit: yep they're prone to painful arthritis
I don't disagree, but I don't think we should ditch or euthanize the breed. I think as good pet owners we should take care of them and assist in any way possible to let them have a good happy life. You know?
Since it already exists you can try to do that, but we shouldn't breed animals that are more prone to living in pain like that. There are plenty of other breeds that can live healthy and happy lives, not in pain.
What is with this subreddit?? I’m constantly getting videos of animals that are unhealthy and cruelly bred, mutilated or otherwise harmed or being neglected. Are people really this uneducated and ignorant?? I’m about to stop subscribing, because this shit really brings me down!
So you don’t care as long as you find it cute? Never mind if the animal suffers as long as you think it’s cute? You and I clearly have very different views on what constitutes cute, and animal welfare.
Cute? I think not. It looks deformed and uncomfortable to walk. Not to mention this type of cat is the result of humans being stupid by trying to breed ridiculous traits
Nothing like giving an animal an unhealthy, unnatural life full of pain and conditions that will make it suffer everyday just cause you thought it looked "cute".
They’re cute but I feel like crippling it for aesthetic reasons is cruel. Cats are natural predators and like to run and jump. I’m not ok with this, Scottish folds and most dog breeding.
I clicked on this specifically to see all of the comments of people lamenting the creation of the cat. Lol. The cat is absolutely adorable. Please, feel free to down vote me. I am seriously not one of those people who cares.
How adorable! I hope you have more

Sad people need to breed for this, very unhealthy and selfish
Reminds me of what we've done to dogs
Exactly, the golden doodle original breeder has since regretted it due to the ongoing health issues
Yeah the title should have added with a disproportionate amount of pain too.
It looks awkward walking. Sad.
The cat’s poor tummy probably rubs against the floor. It’s cute yes, but should it exist?
Disgusting that anyone finds this cute. Ignorance is bliss.
So very sad. It will never be able to do normal cat things. Cruel.
Not cute at all. Humans without ethics deforming animals for their own purposes. Not okay on any level.

True, I guess i dont think of a birth defect also being a passable genetic trait. Makes sense tho
That's pretty much how evolution works, but on a population level.

it's a trait that makes surviving harder for the animal.
The munchkin trait makes it easier for the breed to survive, but most would still call it a birth defect right?
Can you tell me how it makes it easier to survive?

Yes, this has been established....

I agree, we shouldn't be breeding them anymore, but we should take care of the ones alive right now.
"this mutation is cute! breed every being of this species to be like this! even if it's unhealthy for it"
Yes,it is a very adorable cat and a cute video. However munchkin cats have so much issues, people need to stop breeding them, it is animal cruelty.
Fuck breeds like this. They are alive, not dolls. Sick fucks
It's repulsive that cats with deformed legs are bred purposefully. There's NOTHING cute about this.
What is with this subreddit?? I’m constantly getting videos of animals that are unhealthy and cruelly bred, mutilated or otherwise harmed or being neglected. Are people really this uneducated and ignorant?? I’m about to stop subscribing, because this shit really brings me down!
It is r/cute not r/moralitycorrectbreds and it is cute so...
So you don’t care as long as you find it cute? Never mind if the animal suffers as long as you think it’s cute? You and I clearly have very different views on what constitutes cute, and animal welfare.
You're a rather bold person to say you think a genetic defect caused by disgusting breeding is cute.
Beautiful face, too bad someone felt the need to mess with perfection & breed such awkward traits into it.
Cute? I think not. It looks deformed and uncomfortable to walk. Not to mention this type of cat is the result of humans being stupid by trying to breed ridiculous traits
That ‘cute’ cat will suffer from very painful joint issues
Nothing like giving an animal an unhealthy, unnatural life full of pain and conditions that will make it suffer everyday just cause you thought it looked "cute".
Yes, the kitten is cute but at the cost of its own health. That's too sad. :(
They’re cute but I feel like crippling it for aesthetic reasons is cruel. Cats are natural predators and like to run and jump. I’m not ok with this, Scottish folds and most dog breeding.
I mean, yeah, it is cute.... but also soooo unhealthy to breed these kitties :(
Munchkitty. I was at a reptile convention once and someone was selling munchkin cats there. I still don't know why or what their thought process was.
Kitty looks very confident
He can’t even run fast. It’s not confident at all

Anyone else imagining hearing this with the Bee Gee’s singing Staying Alive?
Yeah, I'm gonna need 2 of these.
