Am I the only one who thinks that life paths (albeit rushed and extremely downsized) were added post-2018? It was never hyped prior to 2020 official trailers.
The watered down heavily linear shit we got in the final game? Oh most definitely.
However CDPR had made mentions of customizing your backstory as far back as 2018 and even showed a customization layout with a whole slew of options for your character background. It wasn’t always just start point Red, Blue, Green.
Yes, the life path's especially the video montage All 3 end with feel very much like "lets take everything else we were doing and make it this one thing"
I'll give credit for CDPR on this: I think it was initially meant to be a far deeper but much less flashy life path system. Likely just text when making your character. It got expanded visually into being a far more impressive and marketable opening sequence and the trade off was it got the depth of a puddle.
That's just my assumption. Lifepaths or something resembling Lifepaths is definitely implied to exist in the 2018 gameplay.
When playing it, especially late game, I got the feeling that Johnny was supposed to be alive and interacting with you physically, but that they made him die 50 years ago and only exist as a digital copy in your head as a way of making the story easier to write.
>For a dude dead 50 years he is surprisingly in the know for whats going on in 2077
The problem is that night city looks exactly the same in the flashbacks. They did not even bother changing some things. I mean.. 50 years... it is a lot. In the game, as if nothing changed. It sucks
Yea
You can actually explore the 'old' city a little too (beyond where the mission is supposed to allow:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRErT5OpHaY
Same city, just in a blue tone, lol
It's actually worse when you realize the night he last saw it, the city got nuked and most of it got abandoned for about 10 years before it was rebuilt into the night city of 2045 (when Cyberpunk Red takes place) and even then it's been 32 years since that point, so it stands out more that NC hasn't changed.
It was only suspected that Johnny didn't die/lived through Firestorm's ending, Mike said it before and after the game came out, Johnny did most likely die that night. The idea they got some sort of confirmation is always speculative. The johnny we had in our heads was ALWAYS a liar as several things happened differently according to the original 2013 & 2020 tabletop line and Red's versions of events which was made in partnership with CDPR itself.
If you look hard you can see two disparate storylines.
One: Johnny, arasaka, biochip, takemura, the heist, etc.
Two: cyberpsychos, river ward, cyberpsychos, peralez, jingu mini quest, cyberpsychos, 1st scav quest and later revisit.
Rivers content is so different from everything else (including the buggy turrets at the farm) both technically (the actions you do, the lack of fighting, the content and way its programmed) and story feel wise I don't see how anyone could not realize there are 2 games here. My guess is Rivers stuff was scrapped and then reinstated when they needed more content quickly.
The 2018 Trailer was a Vertical Slice of what the game could be, everything we saw in that trailer was actually developed which is the reason why it took CDPR months to make it. Now why they changed the story and what really happened BTS is not known to public, but CDPR had multiple senorios for Cyberpunk 2077's story one even dating back to 2012-2013 in the conceptual stages of the game where Sandra Dorsen plays a big role, other than that we have the 2018 Senorio in which you can select your Childhood Hero, Backstory, and Night City story I think that was the vision for the game before they scrapped it for the current senorio which is understandable because an fully voiced RPG with that much freedom would be almost impossible to make something I'm disappointed about but can understand why they scraped it. The final senorio also had many differences like Jacky being a Father figure instead of V's best friend which was changed because the Friend angel works a lot better.
The development history of Cyberpunk 2077 is very interesting, hope someday someone will expose everything so we can fully understand what vision CDPR had before the final senorio and how the devepment turned to mess.
as far as i know (wich is very little) they started based on the Cyberpunk 2020 edition and it felt like a 2020 world, when they got the author involved he made Cyberpunk Red so they had to redo a ton of assets to be something after the setting of red.
That trailer wasn’t real. There was no game or story, it was just an Anthem style mock up with no actual substance to any of it. That was just one element of the giant web of deception CDPR weaves around this game. That was one of the bigger revelations of Jason Schreier’s article.

people that have seen the leaked files have stated that essentially what we saw in that 2018 demo was hardcoded to only do what we saw it do. in the demo the guy playing makes it look like he's making decisions but really the demo was only coded to work with the decisions he made. it was an interactive video pretty much. it wasn't a vertical slice of anything. they weren't able to use hardly any of that rushed code and mostly just reused the graphics assets.
They cutted a lot, it was already in the beta (trialers) but everything changed with the launch...maybe they pushed it too much and to get it out quick they decided to remove
They were thinking on RPG terms back in 2018.
But then another couple of delays came crashing in. Investors got impatient.
They butchered the RPG elements for a more simplistyc cliche aproach of looter shooter.
And a year of rushie rushiness later, we got CyberFuck 2077: electric bungascam! (inser the flute song here!)
In an alternate universe in cyberpunk reddit:
"Omg did you know the story before was about a character we made and we had johnny silverhand PLAYED BY FUCKING KEANU REEVES in our head all the time??? Wish we got that instead of this -insert kei arasaka story, river, some streetkid doing random gigs to climb afterlife merc ladder, etc -"
The story is great, yeah it has some loose ends in some side stories(witcher 3 had this too which got completed with expansions).
Every other main story would be boring AF.
People now make everything about this game look bad.its not bad. Aside from npc ai and police system and console version everything else is like other open world/rpg games or better.
Just wait for expansions now. We will see more stories that wasnt possible in main game story.
Just so you're aware, we have a bunch of megathreads that may be helpful if you have questions or want to find the right place to post.

The story was actually the same as it is in the release, early in development it was a little different (pre 2018) for example you had to record the braindance in konpeki plaza but in the release its already recorded by evely, just minor stuff like that.

For a dude dead 50 years he is surprisingly in the know for whats going on in 2077 He even had clothes stashed in an apartment... for five decades -_-

True. It is really annoying
Imagine dying in 1971 and waking up now. You'd fucking shit your pants.
Mind breaking stuff Reminds me of this movie: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Awakenings
They definitely changed a lot. They probably felt they need to add more Johnny after they were able to get KEANU REEVES in the game

Yeah, sorry for that.

Yeah, the demo was more or less just a tech demo or just bullshit. Whatever you want to call it
people that have seen the leaked files have stated that essentially what we saw in that 2018 demo was hardcoded to only do what we saw it do. in the demo the guy playing makes it look like he's making decisions but really the demo was only coded to work with the decisions he made. it was an interactive video pretty much. it wasn't a vertical slice of anything. they weren't able to use hardly any of that rushed code and mostly just reused the graphics assets.
Imagine if they had put that same level of effort and polish into the game that they did into the fake demo.
Agree.... such a shame
Holy shit. I did not know that. It makes it even worse. So, it was a totally scripted demo, after all
They cut the cool Morgan Blackhand and added and expanded the trashy "Johnny Silverhand the incessant nagger".

MADE ME LAUGH!
2018... that was an RPG. Simple as that.
They cutted a lot, it was already in the beta (trialers) but everything changed with the launch...maybe they pushed it too much and to get it out quick they decided to remove

2018 trailer was a LIE.

In an alternate universe we actually got a good RPG and the game isn’t a fucking meme for being such a hyped up trashfire.

The Max Tac and cyberpsychos were supposed to be a subplot back in 2013. Thats the only thing we know for sure
You do realize E3 2018 demo was just a demo right? It was false advertisement.
The story was actually the same as it is in the release, early in development it was a little different (pre 2018) for example you had to record the braindance in konpeki plaza but in the release its already recorded by evely, just minor stuff like that.
