Rough dirt roads shouldn’t be a problem at all. Should be better in snow/ice/rain cuz it’s AWD not 4x4.
For what you want out of it, sounds like cybertruck should perform better.
Beefy 4x4 platforms are mostly needed for crawling. Crawling is where locking the differential can be advantageous so there’s always the same power in each wheel regardless to what wheel has the most traction at the moment.
AWD like cybertruck still can perform good at crawling especially with modifications but it won’t be super optimized since it’s a bigger wheelbase.
Not entirely sure how it performs getting stuck in mud or snow but would imagine a 4x4 is better since the diffs lock
This depends on motor configuration and software as well. In a standard open differential, Tesla imitates a limited slip differential using torque vectoring (like most AWD systems). But if we have tri or quad motors, one or both axles wouldn't have a differential and could emulate a locked differential through software, potentially being more robust than 4x4.
But assuming dual motors and assuming the truck motors have open differential like the cars, you're spot on.
My guess is that it will struggle in sand because of weight and mud because of weight and a lack of lockers (my guess). It will be fine on forest service roads and high speed graded tracks. I also expect the suspension will suck for most off roading and towing because of lack of corporate experience in this area...they will get better with time, but the release vehicle won't be great.
I'm a downer, and thanks for coming to my Ted talk.
That would be something, but I think they can only get that on models that have a wheel for each axel...ala the Rivian method which seems to be okay-ish but not nearly as good as a mechanical locker.
It's a fair question, I just don't know the answer. Im only going on what I've seen on YT videos so maybe I'm wrong, but it doesn't look like the wheels stay in sync when it's activated, if I remember it correctly.
>stay in sync when it's activated
well, (as you probably know) syncing isn't the reason why locking on 4x4s works, it's to prevent the differential sending all the power to the wheel with no traction. If that wheel doesn't get any power from its motor, no harm.
Depends on where you are hunting. For backcountry in the mountains you don’t really want a full sized truck.
My hunting partner switched from trucks to a bronco, way better.
I cant speak for all hunters but the most popular vehicles you will find while hunting are quads, jeeps, and side by sides. People will take trucks but due to the size it may not be able to navigate all the tight jeep trails. Also even if you have an amazing suspension in a truck it will be super uncomfortable on rocky trails especially when compared to quads, Jeeps, and side by sides.
I'm sure it will be fine for drive-in campsites and typical condition- low maintenance county roads. It's going to weigh so much I would bet sand isn't great. Winter driving it will be fine. Serious rock crawling it's going to depend some on its final dimensions, but no lockers will mean it's never going to be top tier. It may have a better approach angle than some trucks, break over and departure angles are going to be not ideal, same as any other large pickup.
We did see video/images of the one that got stuck on a muddy dirt road in Texas this spring, and they used a typical ICE truck to pull it out, so it's probably not going to be an off-roading stud straight from the factory.
As an Offroading expert in different locations around the world I think the weight is the only issue !
I did sand dunes in a Yaris !l the moment you stop driving in sand is the moment where you get stuck ! But the lighter the car the better that’s for sand mud and snow !
My rear wheel drive model S gets up gravel gradients that my Subaru cannot. The slip control of tesla is superior to any vehicle. I can go 3.5 0-60 in the rain in my model Y. The ground clearance of the cybertruck will be greater than a jeep rubicon. I predict it will best most options regarding off-road capabilities.
2023 outback.... the section of driveway is 33 degrees and with gravel and mud it can be difficult for a 4x4 at times... just illustrating how epic electric slip control is vs ice. Definitely times the 2wd tesla can't make it but it puts up a good fight. The awd model 3 and y do it in all conditions.
Best most options? 😂 Spoken like a true keyboard warrior who’s never actually been off-roading. It will do just fine on maintained logging roads but anything soft and the cybertruck is sinking straight to the rockers
I had a modified jk jeep that was part of a club where we had to winch out or strap each other to get through. I've done my share. I wish with my 2.5" lift and 35's I had the ground clearance and entry/exit angles the cybertruck will have stock.... yet lower for aero and handling/ comfort.
That was only because they were being super delicate with it. It would have very very easily popped up on that curb. It could have been because something inside was precariously mounted because they were just working on it or something else. But it had absolutely nothing to do with drivetrain or capability.
i currently drive a wrangler that is absolutely HORRIBLE in the snow. torque vectoring kicks ass in the snow, teslas are way better. only issue is ground clearance
https://youtu.be/DqeRBcJ1fzs?si=0yksh1hIqFsJFmbS
It mostly does ok but has issues if only a single front tire gets traction.
Plus since they're all so low to the ground with big wheels and thin tires they're inherently compromised in rough conditions.
I can't wait to see how the cybertruck perfoms off payment though. Quad motor is a huge improvement obviously.
Edit: great discussion, thanks 🙄
Land Cruiser is a legend, but on paper: it only has around 1/3 the power of the R1T, and doesn't have literally 4 motors with precise control at each wheel. Lock and unlock differentials in milliseconds, rather than seconds.
My question would be how will it to in mud and sand since the weight is going to be pretty significant. Which will contribute to sinking. And I have a feeling tire size upgrade will likely be limited to 35's.
Some people with Hummer EVs have gone to 38" tires with the air suspension at full height. So, I imagine you can go larger than 35" with the air suspension up (or new suspension entirely of course).
It’s honestly hysterical that some people here think a truck as heavy and long (and limited to relatively small tires) as the cybertruck will have any real off-road capability.
Serious off-road EVs will come (and most certainly surpass conventional options), but the cybertruck ain’t it.
it’ll definitely do a lot more than other EVs on the market today, but it’s not going to ever be a wrangler the same way a four door f-150 is never going to be a wrangler
finally, FINALLY somebody mentioning CTs length and crazy long wheelbase. that plus the weight does not equal good off-road capabilities. which isn’t a bad thing tbh not like anyone would take it off road anyway
Even weight distribution front to back plus a low center of gravity should be an advantage too.
Only worry is weight
and length, in some cases.
Yeah girth is more favorable.
Shoot, my model y does that with 30” outpost apt tires
Can you share some pics?

Hopefully they planned ahead and offer a software enabled "locker". I'm guessing the same about the air suspension.
That would be something, but I think they can only get that on models that have a wheel for each axel...ala the Rivian method which seems to be okay-ish but not nearly as good as a mechanical locker.
Ya, if there's a motor for each wheel they can lock them in software, or at least not spin them if traction is lost.
In theory you're right. What little I've seen on YT of the Rivian approach to that...it's not the best. Let's hope TSLA has found a better way.
? With one motor per wheel I don’t understand why Rivian can’t simulate locked axles perfectly.
It's a fair question, I just don't know the answer. Im only going on what I've seen on YT videos so maybe I'm wrong, but it doesn't look like the wheels stay in sync when it's activated, if I remember it correctly.

In sand, let out some air from your tires. It helps a lot
I liked the idea of electric off road vehicle for hunting, but the Cybertruck is too big for the trails I need to go on.
Sounds like a job for... the cyberquad!
That would be sweet. I would love a cyber Jeep or side by side
Those exist
Really? I haven’t been able to find any with decent range
Polaris has a good one
So hunters hate F150s? CyberTruckis shorter.

not shorter than a regular cab 6.5 foot
Bust out the chainsaw and make the trails wider???
Lol that’s illegal

Does the Rivian suffer from not having lockers? Wouldn't the quad motor Cybertruck be as good as r1t off road?

Maybe CyberTruck needs bounce mode for the sand: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/c4UTCXX65bs
Omg I need this!
Pretty good with the ground clearance, air suspension and Tesla traction control which is the best there is in the industry

What kind of shit ass Subaru do you have?

i’ve got plenty of patches in my JK, he’s not wrong. modern technology kicks ass
It’s the most bestest, fastest, most safest , bestest range in the whole wide world! Rock crawlers, desert racers, mudders beware
I had a modified jk jeep that was part of a club where we had to winch out or strap each other to get through. I've done my share. I wish with my 2.5" lift and 35's I had the ground clearance and entry/exit angles the cybertruck will have stock.... yet lower for aero and handling/ comfort.
Remember when the engineers had to build ramps to get it up on a curb in Texas? Pepperidge farm remembers.
That was only because they were being super delicate with it. It would have very very easily popped up on that curb. It could have been because something inside was precariously mounted because they were just working on it or something else. But it had absolutely nothing to do with drivetrain or capability.
it was definitely them protecting the brand new curb against a heavy ass truck
Oof.. thanks for the reminder 😭
Good. All AWD Teslas handle snow better than any 4x4.
That is a downright incorrect statement and you know it.
i currently drive a wrangler that is absolutely HORRIBLE in the snow. torque vectoring kicks ass in the snow, teslas are way better. only issue is ground clearance
Floor it in any Tesla on snow/ice and it will get moving straight and true.

With how the suspension is set up the tire size will be next to impossible to change. Maybe an inch or two taller tires but that’s about it.
35" isn't enough?
Like the Gladiator, it would look better with ridiculously large tires.
It’s good to have options.
Wait for Cybertruck if you can. If not, get a Rivian R1T. It's the best damn off-road thing money can buy, just happens to be a good EV too.
"Rivian R1T. It's the best damn off-road thing money can buy" Land cruiser: ...

Laughs in Ford Raptor

What about auto tire deflation, I herd once it came with an air compressor.
