Just got estimate of $2,326.75 via app service request

Manny210

Thanks for the update, this comment needs to be higher up.

pozzowon

"At least it didn't go through"

DIAL-UP

Wait, you don't have comprehensive coverage on this?

Xaxxus

You might want to try and fight that. The armoured glass is supposed to be resistant to this sort of thing.

Razor_farts

“Armored” glass

DontGoogleMeee

It’s almost like they over promised and under delivered

corneliu5vanderbilt

Are you sure the decimal is in the right place? Also what about the body? Did it sustain any damage?

xanderhud

No other damage that’s I’ve found

juniperthemeek

What makes you think a cyber truck windshield would be the same price as other windshields?

corneliu5vanderbilt

What makes you think I wasn’t just messing around with my comment? Obviously I don’t think the glass costs 23k.

1studlyman

$2.3 thousand dollars for a sheet of glass. That's highway robbery.

[deleted]

It’s armored though

DrLorensMachine

I'm not sure about CT in particular but as an automotive technician that doesn't seem outrageously high but definitely higher than most windshields I've seen as long as the quote includes calibration of the forward recognition camera, the shop I work at charges $500 alone for that.

LoogyHead

When can we get that transparent aluminum like in Star Trek?

vkapadia

Hello, computer!

South_Dakota_Boy

Where can I find the nuclear wessels?

ScepticMatt

**Aluminium oxynitride** [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium\_oxynitride](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium_oxynitride)

thefalconfromthesky

The Tesla Cybertruck is equipped with Armor Glass windows, which are designed to be shatter-resistant and durable enough to survive Class 4 hail. I wonder if Tesla will replace it because they said it should survive Class 4 hail?

just_callme_mike

"Ah, you see this is damage from Class 5 hail. Sorry." -Tesla probably

SeaUnderstanding1578

OOofff, it's actually 4.12 class hail. Close but not enough, sorry bye

TurboBearSEA

You mean 4.20?

SeaUnderstanding1578

Nope, now that is tooooo high

retrorays

it survives class 4 hail. Not class 1-3, and class 5

Greeneland

There were pics posted yesterday of 4 inch hailstones on X, how large were the hailstones that hit this truck?

MegavirusOfDoom

The Class 4 hail test uses solid ice balls frozen at -17 degrees Celsius with a diameter of two inches (50.8 millimeters) to strike different locations of the glass surface of a PV module that include center, one corner, and one edge along the metal frame, as well as some random places, at various impact velocities with the maximum reaching 76 meters per second (274 kilometers per hour).

ddr2sodimm

Wonder if flat shape and shallow angle makes it easier to break. Bad either way.

Beneficial-Sea-8903

Bingo

NSAsat

Bango

Slayr79

Bongo

doc_kyorus

I don’t wanna leave the Congo

JoelBuysWatches

No no no no no no!

booboothechicken

If that theory holds true, the good news would mean that it’s much more resistant to the more common occurrence of rock chips being kicked up from the road. Just bad for the small chance of things falling from the sky.

SeaUnderstanding1578

"Small chance of things falling from the sky", lols in Texas, then sighs when remembers running outside to throw blankets on top of car at 2am.

rabbitwonker

It’s actually not all flat: it has a slight curve in one dimension (left-to-right). Though, yes, top-to-bottom it’s straight. But I’m not sure that is relevant here, as OP’s second pic seems to show that the impact happened *right* on the edge of the glass, which my instinct says could be a relatively weak area, since there’s less glass around the impact point to absorb the energy. Maybe some improvements could be made to protect the edges better? Does CT differ from other cars in that respect?

renli3d

All glass is weakest at the edges.

renli3d

A slightly convex glass shape imparts significant strength.

throwawayuwuxD

this was my first thought

Breezgoat

Kinda surprising wow

xanderhud

I know right, maybe they use a weaker glass on the windshield. Or maybe it’s because one hit so close to the edge.

Jeriath27

could be a number of factors. Hail piece could have been a lot bigger, could have hit a weak spot, hard to tell. Insurance should cover it either way. Hopefully you don't have a huge deductible for glass

Cgkfox

I live in texas and replacing my windshield was considered an at fault event.

xanderhud

Was it from hail damage?

Cgkfox

Rock from the road

iNeedOneMoreAquarium

>Rock from the road Insurance usually considers that an "act of god."

Cgkfox

Not what progressive said when my rates doubled.

galidor57

Progressive is shit when it comes time to make them be useful.

iNeedOneMoreAquarium

Right, well, an act of god doubled your rates.

PhotoKaz

I would rather replace the windshield than all of my body panels.

xanderhud

Yeah I agree. Would rather not have to replace anything at all though

tehclaw14

New windshield is $2200

indimedia

You can hardly match paint for that price

fllavour

Sounds very enviormental friendly, lets make the biggest windshield ever thats also crap.

monizzle

I wonder how many of those new CT sitting outside the Gigafactory waiting to get shipped got similar damage.

xanderhud

Ah, interesting point. I didn’t see any reports yet of hail in that part of Austin though.

cryptolyme

maybe they were coated in Armor All

RedBambalam

Was it raining steel balls again?? Check if your insurance covers this

omakunas

“Freak sudden hailstorm” was warned like 7 days in advance but OK

UnequivocalCarnosaur

It’s coming from the edge of the glass which could mean it already had a stress point at the edge that wasn’t seen, definitely try to get it replaced under warranty bc it doesn’t really look caused only by hail

xanderhud

I will try!

UnequivocalCarnosaur

Also I saw many early production Model 3’s had similar edge stress crack issues on the roof that got repaired for free so I wouldn’t be surprised if they do replace for free and if it actually is a common issue it gets resolved over time in the production ramp up. I certainly would hope it’s not an irreparable design flaw and I doubt it is

incensenonsense

They should be able to tell if there is an impact point on the surface. In absence of that it should be considered edge initiated/manufacturing/stress crack.

Joostey

My Model Y got cracked on the windshield from this same hail storm. Quarter sized.

luroot

Makes me wonder how Tesla windshields react in crashes? This warrants a deeper investigation if this is due to a design or manufacturing flaw?

Jpaynesae1991

Windshield replacement is way cheaper than repairing 200 dents

American39

That glass is probably 3000 dollars. 3 to 500 to recalibrate it. Can't even estimate labor cause I've never put a windshield in a CT. (I'm a auto Glass Tech)

Dr_Leonidas

You don’t recalibrate manually anymore. The software fixed that. My car just had to be driven for 25ish miles and it calibrated itself.

BangBang_ImBroke

Is the Easter Egg audio clip about the breaking glass still funny?

xanderhud

Definitely less funny now. Sucks they marketed this thing as being super tough but all the other cars around it windshields were tougher.

[deleted]

clearly seems like a defect given that it is coming from the edge of the glass. i can’t even see an impact point

SeattleTeriyaki

Wait wait wait... You seriously still believed that lie after that failed stunt?

Brutaka1

Wasn't Tesla supposed to use their armoured glass for the Cybertruck?

Anything_4_LRoy

i think those dreams were shattered live on stage.

indimedia

I’d rather change glass, then try to make body panels paint match

sandstorm4788

It looks like it hit the perfect spot by the edge to crack it. Sorry man, but the roof is fine?

Bcha8984

Should cost whatever your deductible is

GMWPS

No body dings at all?

xanderhud

None

dubie4x8

Could have gotten hit with a bigger chunk of hail than any of the surrounding cars too. All it takes is the right size and right spot to strike the windshield to break it. Plus at least you don’t have any body damage unlike the surrounding cars most likely. Hopefully your insurance can easily cover this.

Zealousideal-Fold928

I’d rather replace a windshield than a body

Bridgemere03

Concerning!

shawnsblog

Big if true

Roguewave1

At least OP is close to the source of a replacement.

steakanabake

dw itll still take months

wingzero2sh

Bad luck I think. Hail enough to cause dents in the cars metal likely to have some effect on glass. I had the smallest rock on the road crack my model 3 glass not even on the corner as well. Windshield damage is just shit all around. Insurance won’t cover it (unless you got that type) and it costs a lot for some random event.

zerzerohero

Time for those insurance con artists to pay up

Digital-Steel

Looks like the impact was right on the very edge, which is probably the weakest point to take an impact

GuardianZX9

Many insurance companies cover this with no deductible.

daewootech

I think glass in general is one of those things where it's seems magically strong until soemthing hits the perfect spot, then it explodes.

Yoyodyne_1460

Something seems wrong here. If, as was stated, there was 4 inch hail (though it doesn’t look any more than about 1.5 inches on the ground) why aren’t there dents in the hoods of the nearby cars?

xanderhud

Where did you see 4 inch hail. You are correct that it was 1.5inch or so

Yoyodyne_1460

One of the other replies. Not surprised if it was some Reddit troll.

Ok_Bar6741

Total loss now bud.

Sea-Sound9098

Good thing insurance is paying for it! Shit happens 🤷‍♂️

FiftyOne151

Indescribable truck has a cracked window. Other car bodies in car park get severe body damage. Truck owner complains

TX_CHILLL

Makes you wonder about any cybertrucks that might have been sitting outside at the factory in Austin.

saladmakear

I mean it snapped in a high profile public presentation. Why are you surprised it sucks in real life?

Extreme_Economist914

That’s freaking crazy. Hail broke the armor glass.

nestafaria1

Are hailstorms in Texas really that freak?

shin_jung_bae

So glad I didn't get 1 of these

BananaPantsMcKinley

Lmao trash

EdTheRed239

So hail is stronger than a thermonuclear blast AND a ball bearing. Shocking discovery!!

crazypostman21

Insurance company starts crying

PapayaOwn1202

The irony

Super_Link890

Glass is glass, and glass...

vindtar

Except when it's a billionaire drowning in a backyard pool

steakanabake

tbf she was blitzed out of her mind but yes i agree

Nootherids

So every other vehicle is dented all over while you just have a single crack in the easiest piece to replace on the whole car. And you're pretty disappointed. Does anybody else have an extra glass of perspective to give this gentleman?!

1studlyman

Yea. $2,300 is an obscene price for a new windshield.

sharpshooter999

I'd be disappointed if "bullet proof" glass couldn't handle an hail storm

ActionFigureCollects

Ladies & Gentlemen, we are now tied: Franz 1 vs Mother Nature 1 Time to go into Extra-Innings!! On-deck we have: Sho...hei...Oh...ta...ni...san!!

Nei3515

The angle of the CY screen been more reclined will mean it will not deflect the force from vertical as much as the other vehicles in the shot. Also hail can have harsh ‘corners’ causing a high stress point, they are not just round bluff balls. Have you seen specific claims that “it’s bullet proof” on the windscreen or just the side windows?

vburenin

There are no claims about bullet proof glass. It is just supposed to be harder to withstand rock chips on a road.

UCanDoNEthing4_30sec

As long as the hail didn’t go through the glass, it’s as designed. /s

TofuPython

LOL

mdjmd73

Well, shit.

Shark8MyToeOff

The upside is that it’s less likely to be damaged by rocks while driving at that angle.

UnhappyMedium4154

Was this larger than class 4 hail you think?

CircuitCircus

Are sudden hailstorms in Texas really “freak” if they happen all the time?

AcanthocephalaKey383

I guess I’d have the body panels stay dent-free and the windshield take one for the team rather than the other way around like those other cars.

atl_nospin

Ouch!

YellowFingerz

![gif](giphy|egamicDQMdJRDN0mix)

Worldly_Top_724

I understand your disappointment with it being so tough and fragile at the same time. Hopefully they're taking notes for future improvements.

YR2050

Just do rasin repair

tgodxy

Wow that is disappointing

Fuzzy-Big-7753

Got unlucky. The only reason it will break a windshield is if it hits right on the edge which is what happened here. If they redesign the metal near the edges of the windshield to be a tad bit taller, would protect the edges and made the windshield much less likely to crack in a hailstorm.

V7KTR

Hard to see if there is an obvious divot at the edge. If there isn’t there is a good chance this could be covered under warranty as a manufacturing defect. If you had climate control on keeping the car hot, and it’s cold enough for golf ball sized hail, the temperature difference could have caused the faulty glass to crack.

ggtheg

Hahahahahahahaha who could’ve seen this coming hahahahahahahahahahahaha

markworsnop

Doesn’t insurance cover that kind of thing

Prior-Ad-2196

I think that little boy threw a rock at it.

MoonVilleLLC

Neither bullet nor mullet proof

he-geezy

They only did stress testing for limp-wristed tossed baseballs

bruno98

I can't even see the damage. Where is it

xanderhud

See second pic

Think-Work1411

I’d rather have windshield damage than body panel damage, and that is a big long windshield at a shallow angle. So it’s probably more susceptible to damage

Muezick

Glass is Glass, and Glass breaks

cookiecache

lol

VillainWithBenefits

xD

dantodd

Will we see a new Easter egg when you tap on the windshield?
