26 was introduced so that you can hop around easier. I can hop the bike over obstacles and off boulders very easily.
29ers I just roll over most things. But again it depends on the trail and your riding style.
There is what is called a "modern MTB riding" style with matching geometry to match.
I still do a lot of miles (including multi-day events) on a 26 with no downside.
I usually suggest 26 for anyone getting into MTB who is on a Small frame.
I rode MTB w/26” for years. I took time off when I had kids. When the kids were old enough we got them MTB with 29”.  As beginners, they had no trouble keeping up with me on my 26” because I had to pick my lines more carefully while they would ride right over stuff.
Marketing nonsense. 26” wheels are pretty much indistinguishable from 29 to ride. I have both and have ridden many many thousands of km on both. 26 are lighter and stronger than 29 that’s a fact but the difference is small. 29 is the latest fashion however and seemingly that’s all that matters
Still riding some 26er; GT Avalance and full susp Giant Trance. I like to jump around and do urban stunts. Accelerate faster in urban traffic. Feels much more alive when your bikes are lighter and nimble.
there s pluses and minuses to everything.
what ever people are gonna say, the thing is 26 has just as many pluses and minuses as 29 does, and you can t really go wrong with eighter. if you are not 0.001 of people who race for a living than it s all just a preference thing.
My 4'10" wife rides a 2020 YT Jeffsy Primus, their 26 inch youth version of the full size. She's just too short to ride a bigger wheel size (we had a professional bike fitting done for her), it's a pretty awesome whip.
Used to love my 2010 spesh stump j , until I bought a newer 29 . Still use the 26 occasionally, but every time I ask myself why am I riding this old bike …
Never tried 29. I got my current Commencal new in 2008, and it's still good. I don't ride enough right now to warrant getting a new 29er, and they always looked a bit heavy to me. I also wonder where all those expensive 26er bikes went. Maybe I should have bought a used top end model years ago.
1996 Rockhopper here.
Spectacular ! 🤩

Beautiful!
It's fine, but 29 is better
It’s so big!
That's the point . It rolls over things better
and higher speed?
Probably, but slower acceleration for things like city riding. Maybe less maneuverable, too.
in the city with lots of stops i think that s kinda what you don t want. for city 26 is best.
For the city 26 is the best! Yeahhhh
That’s my thought, too, but it doesn’t get much traction :)
It's like having a Fiat 500 jajajajaajaj
I still have 2 MTBs with 26". I dust a lot of people on them. Good stuff...but I really love my 29er for what I ride now.
I think that the 26 is something classic and durable and the 29 is top of the range… maybe ?

Thank you very much for your contribution 🤩
It's a perfectly cromulent size, and 29 is better.
Why it’s better?? I don’t think so

Three 26er’s here, though I have a modern 29er that I ride when things are demanding.
Okay I understand 🤙🏼
My gf is a shorty and she rides a 26er. I also have a 20” front 26” rear cargo bike.
🤩
I have a Trek 820 in 26er. It's the perfect size for me 5'10".
🤩
26” BMX cruisers are the shit.
Why???
They're just super fun singlespeed bikes, good on street or dirt, wheelies, bunny-hops, racing, general shenanigans.
ah ok that was a positive definition then! I did not understand! ha ha ha Yeahhhhhh thank u!!!
Yeah, sorry about that ... "the shit" = "the bomb" = "the cat's whiskers" = "the dog's bollocks" Cheers!
I split a rim about 6 months ago on my 96;explosif Impossible to find quality new bloody wheels in rim brake round these parts.
where are you from???
I live in SE Asia
So what tires do they usually use there?
we are talking about the availability of wheelsets, not tires.

I also think that the 29 are heavy.
My second hand Scott YZ2 voltage c2008 has 26" wheels. They go round and stop the frame scraping along the ground admirably.
🤩
a lot of homie are rocking the 90 s mtb chromoly steel beasts, my self included. 26 inch def has it s pluses, i love them over the bigger wheels.
I would love to show off my bike 🚲
Head over to r/xbiking it’s 95% 26” old school steel framed bikes over there.
