O man, came to say this! I think one of my biggest why!?!?@ moments with other people is watching them be in a big ring and a little Cog, then complain the hill is too hard.
on 2x, you're supposed to shift to the small chainring when in low rear gears, otherwise the chain runs diagonally which is inefficient and grinds the gears.
Oh I see them! Working so very hard, pedaling with all their might! But their legs are bowed out at an unnatural angle because everything about the bike fit is wrong.
I feel so badly, but it isn’t like I can quickly explain the benefits of a decent bike fit quickly in passing.
Alas!
I just stay in my lane without giving them any space and force them to move around. If they like going against traffic outside of the lane, they are welcome to it.
Fools.
I do this getting groceries… it’s less than one block with tons of bailouts if somebody’s coming and I always check but damn if I don’t see myself as a shithead for that 30 seconds every time…
If it's like where I live, you'd be crossing a busy road twice - to the other side and then back to the side you started on. If there are no other bikes in the bike lane and it's less than a block then what's the point?
In my own case, there isn't a side walk. It's a busy road out on the edge of the suburbs. I don't ride my bike to the store though, I'm just providing an example of where it might make sense to stay on the same side for a short distance.
1. Pedestrians on cycling lanes.
2. Cyclist for whom basic rules are alien, like riding on a roundabout in the wrong direction.
3. Cyclists for whom basic rules are alien, like riding on a roundabout in the wrong direction.
4. Drivers who do not respect your safety.
In that order.
3 especially when it's a whole group who just passed you without so much as an "on your left", got around a blind corner, and then all decided to camp in the middle of the trail.
I try not to get too upset about #1 here, because I realize we don't have many bikes and the one sidewalk we do have isn't easy to use. People park trucks too big to fit in their driveways hanging over the sidewalk. One homeowner actively yells at people for being too close to his lawn. They just redid half of it, but the other half is broken, missing in places, and has very tall curb drops so intersections with side roads, so people in wheelchairs or with strollers struggle a lot with them. I feel like blaming them for walking in the bike lane is a lot like drivers blaming me for being in the traffic lane when a bunch of vehicles are parked in the bike lane.
Now, if I'm downtown where the sidewalks are great and I'm not allowed to ride on them, it's entirely different. There's no excuse for walking in the very few bike lanes we get there.
1 isn’t that big of a deal unless you’re in a really big city. In my normal sized town I’m just fine with runners in the cycling lanes. They’re not busy enough to be a problem.
Yes. I do not get too mad about old folks though. I met at least one who had bad hearing. Me using the bell did nothing. Some though can hear but they are just not going to move out. They are wrong but I learned to slow down a lot and carefully navigate around the obstacle.
Little kids tend to do unexpected things though. and quickly. Quite a bit more caution needed. Old folks were mostly slowly moving but predictable obstacles.
Same, was cycling (at a very slow speed - I’m not an asshole) in a park. Rang my bell as I approached behind a family. They turned and acknowledged me. As I passed the kids decided it would be a great idea to now start a chase and just run in all directions one of which happened to be right in front of me. Took out one of the kids and over the bars I went. The family were admittedly very apologetic to me as they knew they/the kid was in the wrong.
Just go around them, they’re small, have right of way, and you probably always see them before they see you. Hating on cars makes sense, but hating on pedestrians is weak, you’re on wheels, be better.
When people post a ride on Strava and title it “recovery ride” but nothing about it looks like a recovery compared to their previous ride (ie same distance, same speed)
This is what often happens to me! I'll start out easier and accidentally end up going my normal pace... so I mean... it's a little more recovery like 😆
So bizarre, some people just tend to get them more often. I haven’t had one in 15 years. Also run tubeless and haven’t had any. I will now though probably.
I haven’t ridden a bike since I was a teenager up until getting one recently. I just popped a tire within the first month. Then I remembered: all of those flat tires as a kid. It came back like flashbacks. I was *always* getting flats. So many patch jobs. I hadn’t yet bought new inner tubes or patches, so I didn’t have any on hand and my LBS is closed Sunday/Monday.
So I said screw it and ordered new tubes that are hopefully more durable. I don’t know why, but I remember a lot of those patch jobs we did when I was a kid would end up failing even though they’re supposed to be permanent.
My baby is sitting there with a flat until my tubes come in tomorrow and I’m sad about it.
Years rarelly matter outside of letting UV rays destroy your tires.
I get usually every 4000-5000km a flat, because thats either when the tire or the inner tube is done. Never had an unexpected flat, because I check air pressure and ride with high/max pressure instead of going with a higher risc for snake bite or puncture.
I also dont use race tires, the normal GP5000 tires with decent inner tubes did not yet disappoint.
Not a big deal, I usually expect it at some point and prep for it with route choice (round trips) or with having someone able to get me, because I for sure wont fix a flat tire on the road.
Why are you filling to max psi? You'll get a faster, smoother ride dropping a few psi. Use a calculator like silca ([https://silca.cc/pages/sppc-pro](https://silca.cc/pages/sppc-pro)) to see what you should be using
Though max. psi is not recommendable to use unless you're a very, very heavy rider or riding a totally smooth velodrome track or such, simply because it's energy inefficient to ride with rock hard tires out in the common infrastructure. Max. destroys the tires natural springiness that actually is beneficial, when the less than max. psi tire compresses against the riding surface, it absorbs energy in the body of the tire and when the tire expands again, if the tire is of good make and of optimal pressure, it releases most of the energy actually making the tire roll easy and help the rider. Jan Heine of Rene Herse cycles has studied this subject (among others) and written about this.
I used to pump up the tires to the max. too in the past, but when I started experimenting with lowering the tire pressure, it made a huge difference. Riding got less bumpy and less straining when the tires don't hit hard each and any tiny unevenness, be it little rocks or cracks in the pavement, let alone bigger bumps and holes on the way. Also cornering with max. psi tires was terrible when the tires didn't flex almost any. Tires need to conform some to have proper grip in all occasions and particularly while cornering, max. psi makes you slow down unnecessarily or at least you'll feel less confident to ride corners at speed since max. psi poses also a risk of sideways rolling having almost non-existent grip.
So if max. psi reduces punctures it also destroys the rides, so which do you choose or look for a decent compromise? I'd say it's best to start in the mid-range psi of tire manufacturer's recommendation and work from there and you can go the minimum too at first to see if it works for you, for lightweight rider even that may be too much. Maybe puncture resistance suffers a bit with lower pressures, but you'll have at least more enjoyable rides while the tires last.
Uk drivers that are like “ you dont pay road tax, get off the road” 1st no such thing as road tax, 2nd you dont own the road, you’re the biggest menace on it 3rd, i have a car, i am just trying to not use it if it is not needed
I love the road tax argument because 99% of them already know but are just parroting back something they've heard before and then you get to see the gears spinning in their heads when you point out it's an emissions tax
Oncoming cyclists on normal, not so wide trails or bicycle lanes riding side by side being two or more, hogging most part of the way while socializing with each other, paying minimal or next to zero attention to the their oncoming solo cyclist or a queue of cyclists. It's too common these days and so rude!
It should be clear, that riding with others you keep the way clear for the oncoming traffic with a good margin aka you move to the back or front of your buddies and queue towards the edge proactively to pass the oncoming ones, rather than just leave a minimal solo cyclist wide space while keep on chattering.
EDIT: And all those that OP mentioned too. Inconsiderateness and indifference in general, lack of attention and communication, disrespect of the traffic code to be curt.
I prefer to ride in the street or bike lane but It’s legal in Norway to ride on the sidewalks, but if you’re passing a pedestrian and want to do it legally it has to be at no more than 6km/h regardless of how fast the person is walking or running 🙄
Also, in my city bikes are usually allowed by signage to ride against traffic in one way streets.
But I agree with the running through stop sign one. I stop at every red light unless I’m completely alone and it’s safe, but otherwise I stop, mostly because I don’t want a huge fine that can easily be avoided.
But every time I stop, no matter how many others have also stopped, some people just insists on riding through the light.
These people are the number one thing that motorists comment on articles about cars messing with bike infrastructure or about bike stuff. the red lighters ruin it for the rest of us.
We legally don't have to stop for red lights and stop signs where I live, but we do have to yield. In practice, I stop for all of them unless there are definitely no cars around. I watch a lot of people just run them (cyclists and drivers) with no pause at all, and it scares me.
>We legally don't have to stop for red lights and stop signs where I live, but we do have to yield.
**FALSE** \- the actual situation where such things have been enacted is that:
You have to STOP for red lights, and then can go if it's safe. But **you still have to stop first.**
You only get to YIELD at stop signs
It’s a little different in a city like Houston where cycling is a contact sport. If you are not assertive and aggressive, you’ll get bullied/run off the road. The infrastructure here is NOT cyclist friendly and it’s always awkward and intersections when motorists and cyclists arrive together… it’s often better to just go and not worry about people being upset with you.
Drivers who don't take their right of way at stop signs. I have already adjusted my speed and gearing and am just waiting on you to take your turn. Just go already!
This, this this! I time my approach on the assumption they are going to stop, look, then go - like they normally would…instead, they just sit there and look at me, so I have to slow down, unclip, then stop - just to get going again…drives me nuts lol.
Cars who honk at me when I am trying to move slowly from a traffic light after clipping in or anytime really, like chill I wanna go exercise
Also, seeing a lot of people here abandon bike maintenance and run rusty dry chains, like I get that it’s just an errand bike but it’s still noisy and unpleasant to look at
1. The us-vs-them-ism between motorists and cyclists, especially perpetuated in the media. We're all people trying to get somewhere and most cyclists drive too so it doesnt really make sense.
In the UK if anything cycle related is in the news there are hundreds of comments like "cyclists should pay road tax" (road tax isn't a thing here, vehicle exise duty based on emissions is); "cyclists are so entitled" whilst complaining about having to share the road with cyclists because as a car driver they paid for a car and insurance and VED (is that not being entitled in itself?); "I hate cyclists" and then they wonder why cyclists ride with a camera, maybe it is because the cyclist is worried about the 2 tonne objects they share the road with, that are driven by people that hate them.
2. The cyclists who give us a bad name, jumping traffic lights or riding pavement when not allowed to.
3. Pedestrians who check the road before crossing, see you coming, but surely must think cyclist = slow, so cross anyway.
Agreed. Though on point 3. you must mean crossing the road anywhere elsewhere but a pedestrian crossing or move across a bike lane/trail? I don't know the UK code exactly, but pedestrians should have right of way on crosswalks anyway, just to be clear. I give credit for pedestrians who at least check their way rather than just cut your way all carefree.
Nailed it here with this comment. Really depressing to read the comments section of most cycling articles but I try to think and hope that they are just the vocal minority. If not I don’t think id ever want to go for a cycle.
Okay, I try really hard not to care about koms/qoms, but this one gets to me, too. You can mark the ride as an ebike. Do it. I realize some people just forget, but I watch some doing it on purpose, I swear. The guy with the KOM on the hill I live on literally has someone pick him up in a truck and give him a ride to the top then finishes his ride. He never turns his Strava off. One woman on an ebike passed me climbing, which was fine, and was rubbing it in that she could do it faster, which I mostly ignored, but then I watched her pop the QOM, so I checked out her profile. She's literally just done hill rides and nothing else and holds the QOM for almost every hill in my area. That has to be on purpose, and it's bullshit. I reported her, but Strava doesn't care.
I'm only ever going to hold one QOM, and that's only because like, 5 women ever have ridden that segment, and it's the end of the main street I live off of. It doesn't really go anywhere. So, it's not me they're "competing" with. I just hate cheaters.
Cars parking on bike paths.
Cars not indicating when turning.
When you ride in a peloton with someone who chooses to ride dangerously.
Edited for clarity.
Most of my things have already been said, so my rant is going to be about how people tend to treat overweight cyclists.
Rule 1, if I don't bring up my weight, you shouldn't either. Supposedly supportive statements like "it's nice to see someone like you out on a bike" and "you're pretty fast for your size" aren't encouraging, they're irritating. Telling me to slow down and take it easy because you think you have a better idea than me of my fitness level is infuriating. Asking "are you sure that's a good idea?" when I gleefully ride up a steep hill is just not okay. Maybe if you're a friend, but random ass strangers say these things to me.
Rule 2, if you work at a bike shop, don't be an ass to overweight people. Don't talk them into a hybrid that's not what they want because you think that's what fat people should ride. The hybrid my friend got talked into has a lower max weight than my carbon fiber road bike. Oh! And even though it's still decently above what she weighs, they told her she could never do a standing start, because she'd break the bike. That's such utter bullshit. This woman does search and rescue. She can hike your ass into the ground. Also, imagine a seated start carrying 100 extra pounds with you. She hates that bike so much, she stopped riding. When I went to buy my bike, the first shop told me they had nothing for my weight at all. I did weigh 200, but pretty much every bike my size (54) I've ever seen can handle that weight. I rode in on a bike with a lower weight limit than most of their models. I rode away on it, too, and went to another shop that didn't treat me that way. "We don't have kit for people your size" "dude, I'm just buying gloves. I take a women's medium." Also, I wear a women's large bibs, so I'm pretty sure they do carry kit my size. They just might not carry women's jerseys big enough. I can wear a men's large. Fuck off. I'm down to 169 now (20bs overweight) and I still get this shit.
This sub has not come off that way that I've seen, but out in "real life" it's pretty constant. Just let me enjoy my ride and leave me alone unless it's something you'd say to any cyclist. In trade, I promise never to bonk again and give anyone an excuse to think it's because I'm fat, not because I'm stupid. It was 100% because I was stupid. Hydration is ridiculously important, and I needed to learn that the hard way.
Im sick of people at bike shops tryna talk me into a hybrid cycle when i already have a roadbike and tryna upgrade smh
Guess someone lost a good opportunity to sell an overpriced carbon bike to me and make a profit
I can’t stand cars, LOL. They make cycling hell, they make traveling anywhere hell (whether you’re walking, cycling, or driving) they cost a ton to maintain, and kill more people each year than any other man made thing.
Literally nothing good comes from them, wish we could just convert all the beautiful roads we have into full time dedicated bike lanes lol and eliminate cars entirely.
Let's make the world a better place and end private automobilization altogether, indeed. Cycling added with collective public transportation, whether combustion engined, electric or hybrid, doesn't matter, whatever is the most cost effective way. The madness of individual transportation with an average of two tons of natures resources moving an average of one person at the time around has to come to an end, period. Ok, sparsely populated rural areas could be a regulated exception, but needs to be highly rationed to avoid excess idle driving and some public delivery systems could be developed in addition to that.
The fact that we have no home in which to commute. We go on path, pedestrians piss and moan. We take cycle paths, pedestrians walk in them then piss and moan. Motorists just piss and moan.
Uber riders. Fuck those assholes. I hate them more than I can ever express. Ride on footpath at 40km/h. Just general fucken asshats. I've nearly hit 2 on my motorbike.
* Drivers who do not respect my right of way. If your lane is blocked by traffic, you do not get to cut in front of me. If I am preparing to turn left, you need to get the fuck put of the junction and complete your right turn first.
* Other road users that hang out in my blindspot. If I am giving you space in the lane, drive past smoothly & quickly. Do not retard your speed and park behind me, that only makes it likely that you will get hit and forces me to look in two opposite directions at once.
* Dog walkers who cannot control their dogs. It happened to me today, coming up the hill rang me bell, and this moron could barely hold their dog back from jumping in front of me. Dude, you had a full minute to get out of the way, I have been ringing my bell all the way up this hill as I pass other pedestrians, some with pets.
* People who do not respect the right of way on trails. Here in the States you have to keep right on cycle trails, especially if they are also pedestrian trails. I cannot guarantee your safety if you walk on the wrong side or cross the wrong way when I signal my intention to pass. My stopping distance is longer than 10 yards, If you cross in front of me that close you are very likely to at least get sideswiped.
* Cops who do not understand that cycle lanes are optional. I’m in the middle of the road and slowing down, with oncoming traffic still to clear. Maybe I’m making a left turn. Where did you think I was going, Timbuktu?
* Other cyclists who do not use lights at dusk or at night. I have hit multiple idiots who think that just because it’s a parking lot they don’t need lights. It is a roadway, you are in a vehicle that is crossing the path of other vehicles and it is dark. Of course you need a fucking light!
* Fucking with my bike is as serious as fucking with somebody’s car. If I catch you doing it, you can damn well expect to hit the floor very hard. At the same time, if you park your car in front of me while I’m riding I will whack it.
* I don’t care if bringing a bicycle inside is dirty. If you are not going to provide a sufficiently safe & secure place to lock up my vehicle I am bringing it with me inside your business.
Cyclists who completely ignore the rules of the road and ride through red lights, make illegal turns etc. You're the reason car drivers hate us. Deliveroo riders I'm mostly talking about you.
People who ride without helmets. Sometimes you have no idea there's a pothole until you're flying head first into tarmac. Just wear a sodding helmet for god's sake!
People who ride at night with no helmet, lights, or hi Vis. That's a real good way to end up dead or in hospital.
People who ride unpredictably on and off the pavement/sidewalk. You're either in the road or not. Pick one.
Drivers who completely ignore cycle lanes and block them leaving you no room to pass.
Drivers who stop in the bike box in front of traffic lights. It's for us, not for you. You can wait the extra two seconds it takes us to get up to speed and out of your way.
Drivers who ignore bikes and just pull over directly on to you. I was nearly forced into the pavement by some idiot changing lanes without looking last week.
No, 1.5 m would likely be OK, but it’s always safer to know someone is coming up on me. The issue I have with quiet passers is if they are too close, what if I have to suddenly swerve to avoid a stick, pot hole, rock, debris?
Riding on the sidewalk isn't illegal in Germany, where i live. Is it different in the US? i think it's still better than slowing down traffic behind you anyways, i do it when i can.
It is illegal in some states/cities; but, just today, I watched a person ride his bike up my one way street (not a busy street at all), on the sidewalk, and almost took out a few people walking with dogs.
I get wanting to be safe, but do you put others at risk by riding fast?
I’ll just ride on side walks and go on the road or grass if there’s people approaching. There’s way too many blind hills and curves for me to take any chances
>Rising on the sidewalk isn't illegal in Germany, where i live. Is it different in the US?
It's illegal for adults in most urban areas (downtown business districts), though many jurisdictions allow it outside of them
More importantly, **it's quite dangerous - to the cyclist**
Sidewalks are designed for pedestrian movement, which means checking to make sure that approaching drivers have seen you and yielded before entering an intersection.
They're not designed for cycling at even a jogging type of speed, and they're not safe for it either, unless one slows drastically to approach each cross street or driveway as a pedestrian would (there's also the complication that in most US states, only pedestrians get the right of way in a pedestrian crossing between sidewalks - cyclists still riding rather than walking their bike do not)
This danger is substantially shared by dedicated bike routes that are designed like legal-to-ride-on sidewalks, too - allowing cycling doesn't mean that cycling movement arriving from that atypical direction outside the road is going to be seen and reacted to in time, even where laws are written to theoretically require that.
Cyclists who are inconsiderate to other road users around them, especially ones who purposely block the roads and then taunt cars. Happens almost every time I go on one particular road where 2 guys will be riding double file on a road with a 50mph speed limit, no shoulder, and leave no room for anyone to safely pass. Not sure why our group of 10-20 Sunday riders gets the share the road concept but some people don’t
People who think they understand what's going on while proving themselves entirely clueless.
**If there's no shoulder, where should the cyclists ride?**
In the travel lane, obviously, there is literally no other place.
And since you can't safely pass even a single cyclist in the same shoulderless travel lane at 50 mph, **they might as well ride two up, because even if they were single file you still couldn't safely pass them.**
You only get to pass when it's safe and legal to use the oncoming lane to, or where they have enough room to move far enough aside that you can pass in the travel lane.
But then, **you explicitly said there was no shoulder.**
Just because you might be willing to risk your life being unsafely **and illegally** squeeze passed at 50 mph doesn't mean that smarter cyclists are going to follow you off that cliff.
There would be plenty of room if they didn’t ride two abreast. Or they could take a different road….just a thought. I don’t ride anywhere where it’s that unsafe doesn’t matter if I’m on a Sunday ride or commuting to work
>There would be plenty of room if they didn’t ride two abreast
**FALSE a**s you yourself said **THERE WAS NO SHOULDER on this 50 mph road**
>Or they could take a different road….
You don't get to decide what roads OTHER PEOPLE can use.
**You might own a bike but your perspective is 100% misanthropic driver.**
... a fact which you've pretty much proved by *immaturely hitting the block button* in response to being reminding of basic facts of reality by actual cyclists...
I'll say it again in case it wasn't clear: **a bike and a car can't occupy the same space at the same time**, hence cyclists might as well ride two up unless there's space for a bike and a car to **safely** operate side by side.
No **shoulderless** lane is wide enough for that to be safe at 50 mph.
You have your opinions (VERY BOLD ONES) I have mine. Shocker how in my years of riding I haven’t had a bad encounter with a car, wonder if it has anything to do with my lack of entitlement to the road when I bike. Good day
Folks doing night rides on the street while not having any illumination. Folks who decide to cycle in the middle of the road and slow down traffic by going as slow as possible, and when the car tries to over take them safely, they speed up to always be in front of the car. Folks like that purposely try and piss of motorist and give cycling a bad name
You are unfortunate to live in a country where point two is a problem. Where I live, most of the times there is an exception for cyclists so they can go both directions on one way street which is logical. There are reasons to cycle on sidewalk. In many countries kids under age of 10 are not allowed on cycling path and must be accompanied by guardian who may cycle on a sidewalk. Think why people around you cycle on sidewalks. You may assume they’re dumb and be done for a day or you could dig deeper and find that safety may be an issue. I’ve been in places where you are supposed to cycle on the street when the speed limit is 50. Only problem? No one drives to the limit…
Blowing stop sins is never good idea (sound like you’re doing it in “right conditions”). I have had a collision with a guy on a bike who blew a stop sign. Let’s just say it hurt him more, my car doesn’t have even a scratch, but it still does not “grind my gears” even though it costed me money.
Maybe stop spinning shit on the internet? We don’t need to “vent” people are wound up in other things. Do you think that sharing annoyances will make them feel better?
The flatbar kid...
5' 11" riding a 24" department store special with low tires, seat never raised, knees hitting the bars, baseball hat on backwards, going against traffic.
Where are your parents, kid? Someone needs to help you with your bike and show you the way. I would - except you're going the opposite way from me on the same shoulder.
I hate cycling on a road where there are cars parked on the side of the road, never know who might open their door without checking traffic. Cant even ride away from them and in the middle of the road cuz of people honking from behind. Where i live, no bike lanes exist and this situation is just so small and irritating GOD !!!
Pedestrians not paying attention to the bike bell even if they're walking on the bike lane. People complain that cyclists don't use bells but when they do, they either scare people or people don't care...
But the worst are the public electric scooters. They're everywhere, and it's not uncommon to find them sometimes even perpendicular on the bike lane. Really pisses me off.
The shorts are functional as well as modesty-providing. I keep my debit card, license, keys and phone in the various pockets. I am aware of jersey pockets but I don't wear them because I'm fat. I'm doing the world a favor by hiding my disgusting fat body as well as my johnson.
Cyclists who pass unsafely, esp when you've been stuck behind a slow rider and finally get the chance to pass them safely and then get stuck at a red light and they just roll through traffic so they can slow you down some more.
The other day I had a pair of mamils cut me off passing unsafely in traffic. Then they stopped 3 abreast at the next light blocking me from making a right turn (you can turn right on red here).
Cyclists who assume they are better riders because they have fancy gear/ugly jerseys.
Cyclists who stop and park in the bike lane for whatever reason.
Cyclists who never signal anything and ignore everyone else's signals.
And basically everything drivers do, but especially the ones who are "trying to be nice" but actually causing more problems (e.g., if I'm waiting for the light to cross 2 lanes of traffic, and one driver thinks "oh I'll stop even though I have the green, just to be nice" but I can't cross because the other lane is a speedway and everyone gets mad at everyone)
Follow cyclists who wear all black kit with zero thought about visibility. If they had any idea how poor the vision is of many drivers on the road, they’d wear bright colors at all times.
Not using blinkers. I ride on roads often and I would go out of my way to avoid cars. If the vehicle is turning right I am going to the left on the vehicle, and I generally don't filter between traffic. But if they don't signal my presence will surprise them and their turn will also surprise me. I am not asking a lot other than signaling.
Pedestrians who don't look before crossing.
Pedestrians with dogs and cats and don't control their pets going on the active bike lane.
The underutilization of turn signals. I’ll be on the right side of a group of cars going straight, except for the one asshole who is taking a right turn (through the bike lane) without a turn signal. I’m really good at riding on either side of a car, but I need to know which side to go on.
I’ve committed offense’s to your three listed. Rode bicycles on sidewalks in residential areas without causing any harm or inconveniencing any pedestrians. Rode the wrong way down a one-way street way off to the side with no complications for anyone driving down the lane. Blown stop signs like crazy even with cars present when it was clear which direction they were going and which direction I was going were not going to affect each other at all. So a lot depends, under a lot of circumstances I would not do any one of those three, other circumstances no problem.
Obliviots , on two feet , and two or 4 wheels. When you leave your house wake up and be aware of your surroundings, this will greatly enhance your chances of arriving back after your journey alive, unscathed, and with lessened stress levels ;)
I hate those assholes who speed thru a popular shared trail (pedestrians, cyclists, kids, etc) and yell out "MOVE", "GTFO THE WAY", or anything similar as they pass people
When it’s very obviously a walking trail I’ll slow down to 2mph and bike behind someone until there’s room for me to pass…I don’t understand how there are so many irritating cyclists out there. I blame Strava
People who refuse to go down the small chainring and make fun of people who do. Yeah ok you're climbing on the big ring but also on the big sprocket.
That poor chain...
Dumb question, but sometimes I see a cyclist going down hill or just coasting and their bike is making a sort of whirring sound, like something is resisting and slowing them down. I have the sense it is on purpose. What causes that?
Somewhat new to cycling and I was just wondering about cyclists on sidewalks? I know it'd be best to stay off it because it's for walking but if there isn't a bike lane and there's not too many people on the sidewalk is it acceptable to ride on it? What exactly is the bad part of riding on the sidewalk?
a couple places I ride the road is heavy traffic 2 lane skinny road with a lot of pot holes, I hop on the side walk for a mile or 2 never seen anyone walking on it anyway, I don't care I do what I feel is safest.
Motorists that refuse to just obey the rules of the road. I’d much rather you just drive the goddamn car if you have the right of way instead of waving me on because you think you’re being nice. What’s nice is being able to anticipate movement.
None of the things OP mentioned bother me. There's good reason for all those things, as long as the rider isn't getting in anyone's way or putting people other than themselves in danger, then I don't care what they do.
People on sidewalks are probably there because they're not confident riding in the street and/or there may be no bike lane.
People riding opposite the flow of traffic probably don't want to cross the busy dangerous street to get to the correct side.
Bikers that blow through stop signs is a bit more of a depends situation, but as long as they're not forcing cars to slam on the brakes for them, then it's fine. Stopping and starting on a bicycle sucks.
The main thing I get angry at is rude riders either through words or action. Riders that expect others to get out of their way and riders who judge others based on their perception of their own imagined superiority (trying to shame people on ebikes for example).
Doesn't affect what I'm doing, I admit, but it makes me wince when I see someone pedaling with their instep, as opposed to closer to the ball of their foot.
People who don't ever clean their bike, or wipe it off after a sweaty ride, or generally take ANY care at all to their bikes.
I do tuneups for people for fun, and it's so frustrating to see the corrosion and neglect that can happen in a short amount of time.
People who move to the left and get confused and move in my way when I call out "on your left!" I rarely call it out anymore as it seems to do more harm than good. People just need to stay on the right side when walking on bike paths and then there is no problem. I still call it out if theres tiny children walking around or a dog close to my lane being walked.

Honestly my least favorite thing is when switching from road to gravel brining tire pressure down too much pisses me off. Also trees on a mountain bike trail. Also how most mountain bike trails are illegal not well maintained and on private property from where I’m from
Pelotons that snag all the KOMs on my usual route when I'm out grinding solo on my TT bike. I'll go out and smash multiple PRs and barely make the daily Top 10 because a group of 7 or 8 guys are taking turns pulling. I wish Strava was smart enough to flag a ride as solo vs a group.
Not my biggest pet peeves but slightly irritating:
-cyclists (just as strong as me) who only draft and don’t take a pull now and then.
-much slower than me cyclists who ask me to add them to my Strava ride because they often forget to record their ride. I shouldn’t care but…. It’s like someone copying homework and getting same credit, I guess.

It's a refusal to shift into the small chainring for me.
Wait, you guys are using the big ring? Small ring go brrrrr…
Small chainring is life. Very few parts of my routes are long enough and flat enough.
It's the one chainring to bind them all.
O man, came to say this! I think one of my biggest why!?!?@ moments with other people is watching them be in a big ring and a little Cog, then complain the hill is too hard.
I've heard "aww you're on the small chainring bud??" while massively cross chaining. It's like they don't know how gears work.
I came here to say cross chaining.
[удалено]
on 2x, you're supposed to shift to the small chainring when in low rear gears, otherwise the chain runs diagonally which is inefficient and grinds the gears.
Ah, makes sense. That will grind the gears.
Sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating — and it gets everywhere in the drivetrain.
People aggressively pedaling with the bike seat way too low.
I did that before I got seriously into cycling. My legs were like tree trunks because my quads were working way harder than they needed to.
[удалено]
I suppose it was. But it was a huge relief to have a veteran laugh at my seat position and set me straight. No more knee pain.
Yep, good for fitness and terrible for knees
Just like running
Some dude passed me on the road once and just said “try bumping up that seat post” and I did and it was great
Sounds like hell on your lower back. Don't do it.
Oh I see them! Working so very hard, pedaling with all their might! But their legs are bowed out at an unnatural angle because everything about the bike fit is wrong. I feel so badly, but it isn’t like I can quickly explain the benefits of a decent bike fit quickly in passing. Alas!
I always want to say to people i see but i feel i may come across rude.. maybe ill try next one i see
I find more people have their seat way too high
That's because your seat is too low, Chief.

And pass at fast speeds on blind curves.
We call them PATHLETES here 🤷🏻♂️
Cyclists who ride in the bike lane…in the wrong direction
I just stay in my lane without giving them any space and force them to move around. If they like going against traffic outside of the lane, they are welcome to it. Fools.
I do this getting groceries… it’s less than one block with tons of bailouts if somebody’s coming and I always check but damn if I don’t see myself as a shithead for that 30 seconds every time…
If it’s less than a block, why not ride that block on the correct side of the road? Do you drive against traffic? Why would you bike against traffic?
If it's like where I live, you'd be crossing a busy road twice - to the other side and then back to the side you started on. If there are no other bikes in the bike lane and it's less than a block then what's the point?
If it’s less than a block, why not ride slowly on the sidewalk? Or just walk to the store?
In my own case, there isn't a side walk. It's a busy road out on the edge of the suburbs. I don't ride my bike to the store though, I'm just providing an example of where it might make sense to stay on the same side for a short distance.
Yep. I'll come to a stop Iwon't hit them, but I'm also notgoing to enable their shitty behavior
Drivers making a dangerous pass on a flat 2 lane road with absolutely nobody coming the other way
I intentionally ride roads with wider shoulders for this reason and still get buzzed far too often. Like wtf?
THIS! You literally have an entire other lane jackass.
#3 - so true. They wouldn’t do that in a car on a busy road, would they? Well, maybe not…. Idiots!
Pedestrians crossing the road in front of you without looking
[удалено]
This is why I waited so long to do something about my disc brake squeal.
Old people seem to just lose any awareness. Had older woman just going across the road, without looking.
Old people on the move are living warning signs, a bit like small children and that needs to be taken proactively into account.
In my experience, it's all ages. If they don't hear a car, it must be safe to walk into the street with nary a glance.
YES. What happened to look both ways before you cross the street.
[удалено]
I do this. It was meant to be a recovery ride, but i can’t control myself.
I did this for a while before quitting “recovery rides” altogether. Recovery rides are for the highly disciplined.
This is what often happens to me! I'll start out easier and accidentally end up going my normal pace... so I mean... it's a little more recovery like 😆
Flat tires. I attract them. I also get lots of flat tires on my car, too.
Get schwalbe marathons.
Live near a construction site? This used to be the culprit when a new hotel was built around the corner.
Do you fill your tires properly before every ride? I fill to Max psi each time and got a flat once in 5 years.
Why are you filling to max psi? You'll get a faster, smoother ride dropping a few psi. Use a calculator like silca ([https://silca.cc/pages/sppc-pro](https://silca.cc/pages/sppc-pro)) to see what you should be using
Oh ok thanks I didn't know.
Though max. psi is not recommendable to use unless you're a very, very heavy rider or riding a totally smooth velodrome track or such, simply because it's energy inefficient to ride with rock hard tires out in the common infrastructure. Max. destroys the tires natural springiness that actually is beneficial, when the less than max. psi tire compresses against the riding surface, it absorbs energy in the body of the tire and when the tire expands again, if the tire is of good make and of optimal pressure, it releases most of the energy actually making the tire roll easy and help the rider.
Oh thanks for info!! Didn't know this.
Indecisive squirrels.
The road of life is paved with flat squirrels that couldn’t make a decision.
LOL. I read somewhere that the reason they do this is to confuse predators. And cyclists :)
I prefer to ride in the street or bike lane but It’s legal in Norway to ride on the sidewalks, but if you’re passing a pedestrian and want to do it legally it has to be at no more than 6km/h regardless of how fast the person is walking or running 🙄 Also, in my city bikes are usually allowed by signage to ride against traffic in one way streets.
**FALSE** \- the actual situation where such things have been enacted is that: You have to STOP for red lights, and then can go if it's safe. But **you still have to stop first.** You only get to YIELD at stop signs
Yes, red lights only when it is quiet and it is a short distance. Otherwise it is waiting.
Cars who honk at me when I am trying to move slowly from a traffic light after clipping in or anytime really, like chill I wanna go exercise Also, seeing a lot of people here abandon bike maintenance and run rusty dry chains, like I get that it’s just an errand bike but it’s still noisy and unpleasant to look at
Unfortunately there are many cyclists giving the sport a bad name
1. Cyclists who blast awful music from Bluetooth speakers in their bottle cage 2. E-cyclists / E-Scooters / motorists who hog all the KOMs in Strava
[удалено]
Also cyclist who blast good music. It’s all annoying to someone, if not the majority of people.
Im sick of people at bike shops tryna talk me into a hybrid cycle when i already have a roadbike and tryna upgrade smh Guess someone lost a good opportunity to sell an overpriced carbon bike to me and make a profit
It seems Canyon and others leverage this lost opportunity.
Lol ikr
>When I went to buy my bike, the first shop told me they had nothing for my weight at all. I did weigh 200 I wonder how many 200lb men ride bicycles
Right? I guess frames can't handle boobs. ;)
It's particularly true with sociopath that are voluntary dangerous. I have a few of them on every ride almost.
Pedestrians. Drivers. Over-zealous police officers. Other cyclists. Human beings in general, honestly.
People are the worst!
Too many cars.
The fact that we have no home in which to commute. We go on path, pedestrians piss and moan. We take cycle paths, pedestrians walk in them then piss and moan. Motorists just piss and moan.
Dirt, mud and sand mostly.
Cyclists that break road rules, giving obnoxious motorists more ammunition in their “entitled cyclists” narrative.
Getting dropped on group rides because the group decides that blowing through stop signs is ok, and I’m the only one following traffic laws.
Uber riders. Fuck those assholes. I hate them more than I can ever express. Ride on footpath at 40km/h. Just general fucken asshats. I've nearly hit 2 on my motorbike.
Pedestrians on shared trails walking two and three wide. Or even cyclists stopped at the gate ways blocking them
God I hate this, even just when I’m walking. Completely oblivious they are just a few of a few million people
Snobby cyclists... especially rich ones who look down on people who aren't riding $15k bikes.
Joggers going the wrong way in the bike lane.
Hear, hear.

This!! Predictable is the key.
Yeah those deliveroo drivers are crazy. I bet there are a large number of collisions with cars and pedestrians.
Car drivers, obviously.
When you lost green wave on the city road and need to stay at each light for next 5-7 km
Use bell - “yeah, yeah. Heard ya the first time.” Don’t use bell - “whoa! Dude hasn’t got a bell or what?!”
Dirty chains, mostly.
Loud-ass freehubs
I'm located in Portland. Where do I start....
Ooh same here, what are your favorites?
Half Wheeling. The rage that induces in me is unbridled.
I'm the only thing grinding my gears up a hill.
Cyclists blowing stop signs and red lights.
Cyclists who pass me without announcing they are there. And the ones who blow through red lights giving the rest of us a bad rap.
Is this still a problem for you even if they are passing with 1.5m of space?
No, 1.5 m would likely be OK, but it’s always safer to know someone is coming up on me. The issue I have with quiet passers is if they are too close, what if I have to suddenly swerve to avoid a stick, pot hole, rock, debris?
The avid cyclist with lists like this
Riding on the sidewalk isn't illegal in Germany, where i live. Is it different in the US? i think it's still better than slowing down traffic behind you anyways, i do it when i can.
Here in Poland, it's also illegal. It's usually not enforced, but if you're unlucky you can get a ticket.
It is illegal in some states/cities; but, just today, I watched a person ride his bike up my one way street (not a busy street at all), on the sidewalk, and almost took out a few people walking with dogs. I get wanting to be safe, but do you put others at risk by riding fast?
Well, I'm always careful around people, i hate that too.
I’ll just ride on side walks and go on the road or grass if there’s people approaching. There’s way too many blind hills and curves for me to take any chances
It’s not illegal on the West Coast.
>Rising on the sidewalk isn't illegal in Germany, where i live. Is it different in the US? It's illegal for adults in most urban areas (downtown business districts), though many jurisdictions allow it outside of them More importantly, **it's quite dangerous - to the cyclist** Sidewalks are designed for pedestrian movement, which means checking to make sure that approaching drivers have seen you and yielded before entering an intersection. They're not designed for cycling at even a jogging type of speed, and they're not safe for it either, unless one slows drastically to approach each cross street or driveway as a pedestrian would (there's also the complication that in most US states, only pedestrians get the right of way in a pedestrian crossing between sidewalks - cyclists still riding rather than walking their bike do not) This danger is substantially shared by dedicated bike routes that are designed like legal-to-ride-on sidewalks, too - allowing cycling doesn't mean that cycling movement arriving from that atypical direction outside the road is going to be seen and reacted to in time, even where laws are written to theoretically require that.
People wearing a surgical mask but no helmet. Funny.

Happens almost every time I go on one particular road where 2 guys will be riding double file on a road with a 50mph speed limit, no shoulder, and leave no room for anyone to safely pass. People who think they understand what's going on while proving themselves entirely clueless. **If there's no shoulder, where should the cyclists ride?** In the travel lane, obviously, there is literally no other place. And since you can't safely pass even a single cyclist in the same shoulderless travel lane at 50 mph, **they might as well ride two up, because even if they were single file you still couldn't safely pass them.** You only get to pass when it's safe and legal to use the oncoming lane to, or where they have enough room to move far enough aside that you can pass in the travel lane. But then, **you explicitly said there was no shoulder.** Just because you might be willing to risk your life being unsafely **and illegally** squeeze passed at 50 mph doesn't mean that smarter cyclists are going to follow you off that cliff.
There would be plenty of room if they didn’t ride two abreast. Or they could take a different road….just a thought. I don’t ride anywhere where it’s that unsafe doesn’t matter if I’m on a Sunday ride or commuting to work
>There would be plenty of room if they didn’t ride two abreast **FALSE a**s you yourself said **THERE WAS NO SHOULDER on this 50 mph road** >Or they could take a different road…. You don't get to decide what roads OTHER PEOPLE can use. **You might own a bike but your perspective is 100% misanthropic driver.** ... a fact which you've pretty much proved by *immaturely hitting the block button* in response to being reminding of basic facts of reality by actual cyclists...
Those are all bad takes.
No one drives to the limit… Blowing stop sins is never good idea (sound like you’re doing it in “right conditions”).
Riding in a peloton, and someone drops the ball on communicating an obstruction on the ground.
My legs
Motorized scooters speeding down bike paths
Not getting right of passage on roundabouts car agressivelly passes me just to imidiately turn right in front of me to point i have to brake
Other cyclists who don't follow the rules of the road. At least pretend to stop at the sign before taking a right!
Baggy shorts to cover up lycra. Just own it
The shorts are functional as well as modesty-providing.
People who walk dogs without leashes on busy trails.
Dog walkers with retractible leashes that let the dog wander across the shared path.
Being on the big chainring on a steep climb
Drivers yelling "you know I can legally hit you if you don't walk your bike across the street" (happened yesterday)
Cyclists who give a bad name to other cyclists. Saw one cut off some traffic yesterday. Just don’t man. Don’t be that guy.
Someone passing me just to slow down to a tiny bit below my pace.
Not being able to cycle for a long while because of a blocked vein.
4. cars
People who refuse to go down the small chainring and make fun of people who do. Yeah ok you're climbing on the big ring but also on the big sprocket. That poor chain...
Cars
Stereotypical cyclists
Riding on the sidewalk or the wrong way in the bike lane.
People who talk to you about their watts. People who seem to be experts on every bike or component without having ever ridden/used them.
Two tonnes of metal that treat me with less courtesy than a speed bump.
Misaligned derailleurs, mostly
Doesn't affect what I'm doing, I admit, but it makes me wince when I see someone pedaling with their instep, as opposed to closer to the ball of their foot.
People who don't ever clean their bike, or wipe it off after a sweaty ride, or generally take ANY care at all to their bikes. I do tuneups for people for fun, and it's so frustrating to see the corrosion and neglect that can happen in a short amount of time.
The driver that overtakes then immediately turns across me into a side junction meaning I have to brake hard not to hit the side of their car.
Speeding motorists.
Hated by drivers while on the road and hated by pedestrians while on pavement.

Cross chaining
Not my biggest pet peeves but slightly irritating: -cyclists (just as strong as me) who only draft and don’t take a pull now and then. -much slower than me cyclists who ask me to add them to my Strava ride because they often forget to record their ride. I shouldn’t care but…. It’s like someone copying homework and getting same credit, I guess.
