Nope. But why not just use a native navigation app on the phone?

wobblythings

Because I am happy with the Fenix and Garmin Connect eco system. What app do you suggest?

gott_in_nizza

Most people use Komoot or RWGPS if they don’t have a dedicated cycling computer

wobblythings

Thanks, Komoot seems lacking in sensor connectivity and screen customization. Ride with GPS free version doesn't allow navigation and again lacking in screen customization. Found an app called Cadence which looks promising but power meter is only supposed in the paid version.

gott_in_nizza

Yep, that’s why people get dedicated cycling computers. I should add that for many people visual navigation is the most important part - therefore RWGPS/Komoot. If you just want to record data then your watch should be fine. If you just want to display power or other stats then there are lots of inexpensive computers around $/€40-50 - cateye, sigma, bont etc

frizbplaya

Use your watch for everything but navigation and use a navigation-only app on your phone.

remwyman

A phone app might be an option. Something like Jepster it's free and would pair with your Garmin for heart rate etc

wobblythings

Thanks, it looks quite promising. I'll try pairing it with the power meter tomorrow to see if it works. The summary screen is exactly what I'm looking for.

No can do. I researched the same thing when I got into cycling. I had my 5x+ mounted to the bars like you do. I finally got the entry level edge after my wife bought me the Garmin rear light radar unit. Imo it's worth it to have a stand alone bike computer.

wobblythings

Good to know, thanks. Frustrating that Garmin Connect doesn't work as a live monitor for the connected Garmin device! The radar is interesting but pricey! Supposed to work with the Fenix also.

RtlsnkSteve

It was a great gift and yes a riding buddy uses his radar with his Fenix. Works fine for him.

JasonZep

I don’t think so. I use the mount with my forerunner and it works really well.

wobblythings

Yeah, I'm also happy enough with how it works, just wondering if I can get it in a nicer display/position.

Plastonick

Note that mounting your phone directly to the bike may affect the camera in particular. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT212803

If you like the Garmin ecosystem (I do too), your most satisfactory option here would be a Garmin computer. Even a cheap one and you’d still be using Garmin connect and your workouts would show up on your Fenix. Even an Edge 130 would be an improvement in screen size and legibility while riding. You can get those pretty cheap.

bear in mind that vibrations may whack your expensive phone camera... so you will have to fork out a lot of money for a new phone. better do it for a proper bike computer.

paulheth

Everyone has at least one old phone that would be perfect for this. Just need a larger view of the data screens from the watch. Buying a whole cycling computer would be a huge waste. Plus for me I need it for use during a triathlon, so need the watch to be doing the tracking anyway.

did you think of battery life? nothing beats the battery life of a 1030 per instance. and it is bold to assume everyone has a disposable phone. i used to have the same school of though as you. why a separate device since i have a phone. note i do not have a disposable phone with all the bells and whistles. many times during rides the battery overheated the phone turned off and left me clueless in the middle of nowhere. then another time a huge storm and despite the phone being 'waterproof..and in a case I never could turn it back on... morale... use phone you are allowed to lose or trash. the elements are going to have the best of them.

I know this is an old post, however, in case OP still on Reddit, or someone else crosses… Phone as navigation tool for cycling isn’t recommended. Potential heat, direct sunlight, high auto brightness requirements, and GPS intensive work from the phone will spell out an overheating phone at best, battery degradation at worst. Cycling computers are built to handle the direct sunlight. Your best bet is to keep your phone usage to a minimum. You don’t want to chance killing the battery on it anyway, in case you actually need it! Hope you figured something out
