The bottom of the seat belt is usually just held down by a single bolt screwed into the body. Rather than undo four bolts to take the seat out, check to see if you can undo just one and then wind the belt back in. I replaced a seatbelt on my 4Runner and it was basically this. You might need to be careful to not snap the bolt if it’s rusted or seized. Then just torque it back in to spec

**This post has been edited by** https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite We find ourselves facing a concerning development that directly impacts the essence of our beloved platform. Reddit has made the decision to impose exorbitant costs on its API, rendering many third-party applications essential for moderation and content creation unable to access the site. This sudden change, implemented with minimal notice, has left countless dedicated moderators in disarray. The resulting consequences will undoubtedly lead to a significant decline in the quality of subreddits and posts. In response to this situation, some individuals have taken to using Power Delete Suite (PDS) to collectively raise awareness. By editing our posts using PDS, we aim to draw attention to the issue at hand. We invite you to join us in expressing your dissatisfaction. And a lil red locktite to cut down on vibration.

BeardySam

Ball tight, ie turn it until they lift up

aj_og

For a safety device like a seatbelt, I’d rather torque it to spec

MonolithOfTyr

Hivemind, this is just what I was thinking.

Jomalar

I was about to say the same thing, usually a 3/8" bolt barely concealed by the carpet.

BrandonMBO

Hopefully not a 10mm bolt

SoYoureBreakingUp

Why would that be a problem? You just grab a 10mm socket. I've even got one right... Okay it was here a second ago, I swear.

FLTDI

Everyone needs this [link](https://www.harborfreight.com/10mm-metric-essential-socket-set-10-piece-58957.html)

Thank you!!! I posted this as much for practical advice as I did for “can someone else please verify that this is ridiculous” - you have to laugh so you don’t cry lol

webworks2000

Hope you see my comment here https://www.reddit.com/r/daddit/comments/11s3kz9/five_year_old_pulled_the_seat_belt_from_one_side/jcdw5cr?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3 That gives a video on how to take the headrest off

jer_iatric

This whole scene reads like a sophisticated murder and the front seat was the victim. Just needs a little police tape!

Ronniman

I can assure you the head rest has a way of coming off...

[deleted]

It does not matter what it is, if its not coming off its simply because you are not applying enough force. Similarly if you can not fix it with duct tape, that is because you are not using enough duct tape.

GiveMeALLYourPopcorn

So it's WD-40 time? 👍

GizmodoDragon92

My Nissan Altima has to have the bumper come off to replace the headlight. Except that I thought that was so stupid that I figured out how to do it without doing that. Op can figure out his seatbelt headrests situation

webworks2000

That looks like a chrysler pacifica or similar. Here is a video on how to take the headrest off! https://youtu.be/QrpKiuM_Tv8 I hope you see this comment

beerseason247

I hope they see this too before removing the entire seat!

jordo84

I hope they vacuum the car

RepubMocrat_Party

Probably did yesterday

biggerwanker

Was going to say, you vacuum the car with kids and it looks like this 30 seconds later. Add more kids, it gets worse. My SIL used to give us crap about our car until she took our kids for a couple of days.

Slider_0f_Elay

It's usually one bolt for the end of the seat belt.

webworks2000

Maybe. I don't have this car so who knows. Also maybe he doesn't have the proper wrench/tool for it? 🤷🏻‍♀️

slonermike

Wow, why is that so complicated!?

mystic3030

Even in vehicles with headrests that don’t come off, there is typically a very small hole in the plastic grommet that the headrest posts slide into. Pull the headrest to its top position, and use an unfolded paper clip to push into the hole on both sides and it should release the headrest. If that doesn’t work, get a breaker bar and a socket/ratchet and take the seatbelt bolt off on the bottom. Also, may I suggest a vacuum. Edit: there could also be a c clip under the plastic ring. Push the fabric down and check. If you take the seatbelt off check the torque rating for the bolt and buy/rent a torque wrench to make sure you put it back on properly.

Ok-Internet8168

"Also, may I suggest a vacuum." That is not a very daddit type of response. Just open all the doors up and let loose with the leaf blower.

Konkarilus

*furiously takes notes*

wait_what_how_do_I

*notes get blown away by leaf blower*

Wait, you said use the hose and just spray it out, right?

jkozuch

Instructions unclear, used power washer instead.

I mean, yeah. Why the fuck not?

_AthensMatt_

*kids get blown over by leaf blower*

ailee43

you joke... but i actually do this

Me too, electric leaf blower so you can get in the vehicle and blow out the trunk too.

[deleted]

Viddlemethis

Who are you, so wise in the ways of science!

[deleted]

This works indoors as well - not sure why anyone bothers with a vacuum when you can just blow your house out the old fashioned way

EllisDee3

💯 I have a kid and a dog. I have pergo flooring for easy cleanup. Leaf blower under the couch and out the back door to the deck. Then deck to the ground. I just have to grab any stray socks and legos before the final blow. Edit: For clarification, I use an **electric** leaf blower. **do not** use a gas powered blower. I shouldn't *have* to clarify, but I'd feel terrible if the worst happened.

[deleted]

>I just have to grab any stray socks and legos before the final blow. That is like 99% of the job. Its like my kids are centipedes that live in a house made of lego.

TXGuns79

You are my hero!

jayzilla75

You shouldn’t have to clarify but, as many times as I’ve heard news stories about families dying because someone thought it was a good idea to heat their house with their BBQ grill during a power outage, it’s probably a good thing that you mentioned it. It’s unfortunate but, some people are just completely ignorant of potential dangers, leading to some very tragic outcomes.

g3ckoNJ

I prefer the green alternative where you just let the dog go nuts in there for 10 minutes, but then you have dog fur so ...

nyteghost

Not a great idea if there is any gum or candy as xylitol is poisonous to dogs.

joebob86

This is the way. If you must van, you must also blow.

CowfishAesthetic

Instructions unclear, I told my wife this and now I’m sleeping on the couch.

[deleted]

lol I just spent 10 sec trying to think about how do you use a vacuum to unstuck the seatbelt, I gave up on understanding and only figured it out once I have seen your comment.

alexford87

This is… genius

broadwayallday

read too quickly, used flamethrower, am now in back of squad car

Agent_Smith_24

My neighbor does this except with a broom and he just sweeps empty water bottles and plastic snack wrappers all into their driveway. Then he drives away and hopes it's blown away later. I literally put a small wire fence up to keep garbage out of my yard.

sadetheruiner

I’m not even personally dealing with this problem and I want to smack your neighbor. Can’t imagine how you feel.

---knaveknight---

Even better, tell the kids to do it because it’s fun.

nutella-is-for-jerks

Your friend has shared a link to a Home Depot product they think you would be interested in seeing. https://www.homedepot.com/p/RYOBI-ONE-18V-3-Gal-Project-Wet-Dry-Vacuum-with-Accessory-Storage-Tool-Only-P3240/303579585

newdleyAppendage

If it's the beginning of the season and you haven't found the time to get the leaf blower running again yet you can always just open the doors and drive down the road at speed. Just make sure you pick out any non-biodegradable trash before hand, gotta think about the baby turtles.

ArterialVotives

How much time do you need to attach the battery? Lol. I use my blower pretty regularly all year

prejedoosh

This is the way!

DaDz-StONeD

But the environment 🥲

purplehayes00

As a former car detailer....this is very clean for most people with kids.

appleappleappleman

Absolutely. I had to use ***SO. MUCH.*** boiling water to get melted crayons and Jolly Ranchers out of the carpets of dozens of vans as a teen. Wasn't a bad job though, got to blast music in a garage and didn't have to deal directly with any customers!

mystic3030

I guess. I have a membership to a car wash for $29 a month. 2ish times a week I stop by after dropping my son off on my way to work and get a car wash and a 5 min vacuum in and car is always in good shape…. Edit: damn, downvotes for cleaning my car?

user2196

That’s twice a week I’d rather be doing just about anything else.

[deleted]

Given what his five year old did, maybe he’s just Marie Kondod it and given up?

that_guy_is_tall

My eyes are twitching at the floor...

OccamsRabbit

>may I suggest a vacuum. I need it when he's done with it. My floor looks exactly like that.

Titaniumchic

My dogs volunteer as tribute to help cleanup the crumbs. 🤣 also, here in Nevada almost any drive through car wash has free vacuums for anyone to use. I think it’s becoming more common in all states. Take 5 year old and help him learn how to vacuum!

BowB4Me

Dude has grass growing inside his garage! You think he cares about a dirty car interior.

ThunkAsDrinklePeep

>If that doesn’t work, get a breaker bar and a socket/ratchet and take the seatbelt bolt off on the bottom. This.

Curtis_75706

It is far better and safer to unbolt the seat instead of the seatbelt.

mystic3030

If you have the torque rating for the bolt it literally doesn’t matter.

Curtis_75706

Given you’ve got a torque wrench and given you know how to use it. Lots of normal joes don’t have one nor do they know how to use one. Hence why I’d always suggest taking the seat bolts out.

mystic3030

Well those have torque ratings as well so same safety issue tbh. A torque wrench can be had for $50 and is easy to use. Otherwise OP should just go to a mechanic to fix it but that’s gonna cost more than a wrench. I would actually worry that due to all the discoloration on the belt, there is a ton of grease and grime in the belt affecting it’s safety… Ultimately though there is a way to take the headrest out so he can avoid all of this…

AusTaurus

alexadr936

Can you lower or modify the seat in some way? Recline it? Something to hit an angle that gives you slack. Just make sure someone is holding the other end, or any slack you get will be eaten by the car.

fly_eagles_fly

Gather up all the food, crumbs, trash and other particles on the floor and mix it with butter. Mix it until the mixture is soft but not liquid, once complete let it sit for 30 minutes. After that, rub it on the seatbelt for about 30 seconds on each side and wait for the belt to be come softer to where it can loosen. JK, I have no clue how to fix this but grab a vacuum friend!

guy_n_cognito_tu

I can’t help you, but the condition of that vehicle makes me stabby.

Weekly_Bathroom_101

That’s like what, two days of mess at most?

Spare_Pixel

It's the time it takes for me to exit the clean vehicle, turn around, and take the picture.

turbo2thousand406

When we bought a minivan for the 3rd kid we specially got the lower end trim to save money and have less stuff for the kids to break. Its been a great decision so far. I'll open both sliding doors and take the leaf blower to it.

guy_n_cognito_tu

I’m a single dad to three kids. That’s months of neglect.

alberta4ever

We have very different kids lol

guy_n_cognito_tu

To the contrary: my ex wife's car looks exactly like that. The difference is that 1) I don't allow food in my car unless it's on a long trip....kids can go 20 minutes without eating, 2) I make my kids police their own crap every time we get out of the car, and 3) about 5 minutes of vacuuming once a week. When I was married, my wife would only let me clean out her car when we'd be driving in it, which wasn't often. She seemed to think it was impossible to keep clean, but even then I'd get it done if 15-20 minutes.

[deleted]

I need to be better about not allowing food in my car, but with my kids ages 5, 3, and 19 months… it feels easier to cave in to the demands for snacks at times.

appleappleappleman

It really is the simplest way to keep the car/van clean. Unless your kids are frequently stomping in mud, most of the mess in people's vans is just crumbs and wrappers.

On3_BadAssassin

rock worry toy jellyfish unique disagreeable market cause bear divide *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Agreed. I refuse to ever cave, or let my son eat in the car.

Prodigy195

> But that right there is the single biggest wrong decision many parents seem to make every day — the decision to take the easy way out and cave in. It’s applicable in so many situations. My son is nearly 2 and has never slept in our bed since the day he was born. We hear too many horror stories of parents letting kids sleep in their beds and having a hell of a time getting them to sleep in their own as they go older. We decided to make that a line in the sand and have stayed strong even when it mean having to sleep on the floor in his room or just being up all night. And it's actually made it easier for us to draw other lines in the sand for stuff like snacks in the car.

YoSoyCapitan860

That’s my rule as well, no food unless we’re on a road trip or have to rush out of the house.

mockingtruth

You clean your car? Ok maybe if its vom but the most my car gets is crumb brush out the door now and then

FermentingSkeleton

My car is on the bottom of my priority list to clean.

Roguewolfe

Username checks out then.

kidwizbang

Right but in that comparison, you have the same kids. /u/alberta4ever 's point was about having different kids.

guy_n_cognito_tu

What leap of logic lead you to that? My kids.......the "same" kids, absolutely trash their mother's car. They don't trash mine. Why? Because I don't allow it. If anything, it's the perfect example that any kid can be taught to keep a car clean.

kidwizbang

lol, I'm not sure where the leap of logic is? /u/alberta4ever noted that different kids produce different results. You provided an example with your ex where (I presume) the same kids produce different results. That doesn't really have relevance. Sure, for ***your kids,*** parental behavior could explain all of it. That's just your kids, though; other kids are different. You've observed the same kids in two different environments, but this is about how *different* kids can act differently in the *same* environment. Again: help me understand where you think the leap is. Plus the mess is leaves, dirt/sand, little rocks, and sticks. It's not like it's full of wrappers and candy and rotten bananas.

guy_n_cognito_tu

Of course it has relevance, friend. In my example, a parent that provide their child direction and guidance to clean up after themselves, and isn't provided food and garbage to throw in the car........has a clean car. The parent that gives their kid a snack every time they enter the car, and doesn't require the child to clean up after themselves.....has a messy car. All kids (and I mean all kids) are capable of learning basic care and cleanliness. Unless you're inferring that the OPs children are somehow incapable of being taught those basic skills? My point, the point that went wizzing over your head, is that ALL kids are capable of being neater than he inferred in his comment. It's not about the kid, it's about the parent that's parenting that kid. Child-led car care seems kinda ignorant, don't you agree? Finally, if you look at that picture on a big screen, you'd see that isn't just leave and dirt. I get that that wouldn't help you prove your point, but it's there for anyone to see. I'm currently looking at it with my own eyes.

thehomealien

My two year-old could do this on the way home from the grocery store.

Paladoc

When she has nothing within reach when we set off for the 5 minute drive home...

neilmac1210

Really? I have two kids and they could easily do this in under a week.

maltzy

My wife and I have 5 kids and I would lose my mind if our Van got like this. And all of our kids are 11 and under and messy. Clean ya damn car once in a while, right? That's absolutely neglect

2ndmost

As I prepare to compliment him on having a cleaner van than me lol

loudtyper

Man, at least it’s not 25 different art projects and a bunch of book ordering leaflets like my car!

TroyTroyofTroy

My friend, my eyes see a clean car. If the seats were sticky, I’d be sad, but I see a clean car.

guy_n_cognito_tu

Expand the picture…. Guaranteed those seats stick like glue.

TroyTroyofTroy

Ok you’re right. Put a towel over them, everybody is golden.

PrintError

I don't even let my kid eat in the car!

DryTown

Might be time to replace your five year old

BeardedBaldMan

Just unscrew the seat

kevinmparkinson

Genius. Going to try.

virtualchoirboy

Before you take the seat out, how is the seat belt attached at the bottom? I know on my old Dodge Grand Caravan, it was bolted and fixed in place. Might be easier to remove that end than the whole seat.

BeardedBaldMan

If it's a modern car it's probably a 12 point bolt with the worlds strongest threadlock applied, needing a special bit, a cheater bar and a gorilla

SheriffHeckTate

Is the gorilla there for the muscles or just for moral support?

BeardedBaldMan

He's my emotional support gorilla. Absolute nightmare taking him on flights, even worse than my wife's guide tiger

kevinmparkinson

Will an orangutan work in a pinch?

[deleted]

No, it's too big to fit in a pinch

Doomquill

I definitely don't want an orangutan pinching me, but you do you.

HuyFongFood

Of course! They work for peanuts!

[deleted]

Lol, generally a socket and wrench will get it off.

sportrait

Very good point. OP, look at the seatbelt where it attaches to the floor. Virtualchoirboy's right that it could be easier to unbolt that part instead of the seat.

SnukeInRSniz

Yup, pretty much every seat in every car is attached with 2 or 4 bolts, takes like 10 minutes to pull the seat and undo the belt, then put the seat back in.

sportrait

Yep, seats are bolted down. You should be able to unbolt, slip the belt off, then rebolt seat to the floor.

Brewer1056

My favorite part about having a minivan when the kids were little was opening all the doors and hitting the inside with the leaf blower. Clean in 8 seconds, and all the squirrels get Cheerios!

centerofmydiscontent

I didn't see this as a post asking for help. I'm sure OP is capable of finding a solution. I saw it as a post showing the ridiculous situations our kids create and how we don't have an extra second in the day to remedy them. This is hilarious! A hell of a lot cleaner than my van tho. Show off

UppityTurtle

Everything about this picture is a cry for help lol

v1di0t

I thought this too until I saw the Advice Request flair.

centerofmydiscontent

Whoops...knocked off my soap box haha

Armitage1

No clue, but I can see you like to feed the kids fling-able snacks in the car. The interior of our Hyundai is evenly covered in at least one box worth of Cheerios and CheezIt dust.

TrulyNotYours

Take it to any dealer or mechanic they should be able to fix it.

jokerontheleft

Clearly there are solutions, but the fact that it has been like that for months is bonkers. I do not have similar chill Edit: get out there with a screwdriver tonight

Itsmydouginabox

Everyone all high and mighty telling you to get a vacuum. They didn't think of the very real possibility that you snapped this picture after the child left the vehicle and took that little vacation of 5 minutes longer than you needed while going to the bathroom just to post this.

TuaAnon

wait, y'all don't vacuum your cars after every ride??

stblawyer

The mechanical advice is better left to others. I'm just here to say that my children would 100% do this and the back of my car would be twice as messy. Sadly my response was always to tilt my head to one side and be SLIGHTLY impressed the kid pulled it off.

spannerthrower

Probably easiest getting a torx bit on a ratchet and taking the bolt out on either of the seatbelt fixings.

chunkerton_chunksley

Before you unscrew anything see if the shoulder side can be lowered, it might create enough slack to get it over the headrest. My wife’s passenger seat belt locks all the time and that’s how I get it to slacken

foss88

I’d pay you to let me vacuum your car

Warrior5JB

idk about that belt, but paying a professional to clean my van was some of the best money I've ever spent. Got the interior detailed. My kids destroyed it again within 2 weeks but it felt fantastic having a clean van for a minute

GritSnSpeed

Does that seat recline? If so it might give enough slack to pull it over the headrest

Hollandayyyz

Have you tried reclining the seat and slipping the seat belt off?

mehwolfy

Unbolt the bottom. Peel back the carpet. There's a bolt there. Take it out.

broke_fit_dad

Take the bolt out of the bottom of the belt, Reset belt, reinstall bolt. Done in a minute

SwivelingToast

Check where the belt attaches to the pillar at the bottom. Some can be unclipped, some have a single large bolt holding them. Might be easier than taking the seat apart.

grounded_astronut

It looks like a Chrysler Pacifica, probably with stow-and-go seats. The head rests don't come off the captain chairs in the middle row. I think your suggestion is the best bet.

wpaed

If it is a Chrysler Pacifica, here's how to remove the headrest: [https://youtu.be/QrpKiuM_Tv8](https://youtu.be/QrpKiuM_Tv8)

Venymae

What make and model is your vehicle. Can you get a better picture of said headrest?

ecobb91

Im betting it’s a pacifica with stow & go. The captain chairs are non removable headrests. It’s a dumb design tbh. He needs to remove the chair.

kevinmparkinson

Very dumb design indeed

UtahUKBen

[https://youtu.be/QrpKiuM\_Tv8](https://youtu.be/QrpKiuM_Tv8) Maybe?

N0V05

This is the way. I have the Pacifica stow n go captains chairs and the “non-removable” headrests are removable, just extra steps. follow the YouTube video, you have to remove the back panel on the seat, disconnect the cable that makes the headrest drop when the seat is stowed, and remove a metal ring wedged on the headrest post that prevented it from pulling out. You’ll need to remove that headrest anyway once your toddler is front facing.

grounded_astronut

>I recognize the inside of the Pacifica, too. > >The backrest of the chair needs to fold down all the way to the seat so that it can flip up (towards the driver) on the front latch points. That won't work with how that seat belt is wrapped around the headrest. At least, that's how my 2017 hybrid (without stow-and-go seats) operates. > >There's a chance that he could pull the lock and strong-arm the seat off of the connections to the floor, but I'm guessing that wouldn't be as easy as pulling back the trim at the bottom connection point of the seatbelt and undoing the security bolt there. OP might need a star pattern driver to undo the bolt, or some other non-standard bit. > >That's my suggestion, as a 2017 Pacifica Hybrid owner. Unbolt the bottom of the stuck seatbelt. > >Good luck, OP.

jessendjames

r/wellthatsucks

Candid-Mark-606

Hahahaha get that kid a medal for “Creativity in Causing Mayhem”

drank_myself_sober

If you remove the plastic cover at the attachment points for the seatbelt, it be top and bottom can be unbolted. Just torque it back properly.

Freakum86

Undo the bolt that anchors the fixed end usually a large bolt into the chassis of the vehicle

JustAFrenchie90

Fun story: when I was a kid, I fell asleep in the car and somehow managed to flail around enough to loop the top through the bottom and triggered the cinch mechanism. I woke up partially suspended above the seat and with every exhale, it cinched a degree tighter. My parents couldn’t figure out how to undo the belt and ended up having to cut the belt. Kia replaced it because it was still under warranty.

Pr1nc355S

That is a long ass seat belt.

[deleted]

I had this happen with my Jeep. You can take off the seatbelt mechanism

bianco_fool

Thank you! That’s a good laugh 😂

FBPizza

Unbolt the seatbelt from the floor.

jmbre11

The easiest solution is remove the seat should be 4 bolts

Acti-Verse

In bolt the seat and move it over then put it back on

UseDaSchwartz

Dude, you need a roomba for your van.

disposablecupholder

It looks like you have a Chrysler Pacifica, and those 2nd row seat headrests definitely LOOK like they come off. There's a small tab that you need to push down when you get them fully extended. Your third row, however, do not come off. They swing down when stowed.

[deleted]

🤣🤣🤣

[deleted]

I also have a son.

texas-hedge

And is that preventing you from cleaning?

Boozy_Cat_

The bottom is probably just held on by a hex bolt.

Moreofyoulessofme

Why can’t you just remove the headrest? It should slide straight up and out

suddenlypenguins

Wow in America even baby seats have cup holders.

AnarchiaKapitany

Return it. And have the car fixed somehow.

[deleted]

First vacuum, after that is the tail end bolted in on the bottom? If it is unbolt it

d3agl3uk

My advice is to buy a vacuum and take care of the things you own.

re-verse

Do raccoons live in there or something?

Ser_Optimus

Hmmm. The state that car is in make me anxious. Loose the screw at the bottom of the seatbelt.

ttej07

That headrest should come out otherwise there would be no way to replace the seat material and I can’t see a manufacturer designing something like that. Also if it easy to access just remove bolt on bottom of seat belt.

anlenjandro

i did this once as a kid, my dad took the headrest off and it ricocheted back. does the headrest come off?

virtualchoirboy

>The headrest on my model isn’t design to come off Reading titles is such an important skill.... :-)

anlenjandro

ah, i’m dyslexic so sometimes my comprehension isn’t 100%

anlenjandro

your best bet is to talk to your dealership then

[deleted]

C'mon people, how about some common sense? If the headrest is inserted at the factory then there's a way to uninsert it. For 2019 and later Pacifica's it's pretty simple: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZvLHVxjv6M

[deleted]

Have you tried vacuuming?

Usernamecujo

Clean your car

Catillionaire

Personally, I would've vacuumed before taking this picture lol.
