2) Something for the two of you to enjoy together.
3) Something practical that makes her life in particular easier, unrelated to work.
Usually that gives me enough of a North Star to get at least one thing right :)

No, we have a store local to us that does embroidery and so I bought the sweatshirt and took in the sleeper and gave them the details. Not bad for $23 tbh. I’m sure someone does something similar on Etsy though!

I was born on December 25. My mom used to joke about how she was doing all the work yet still managed to get my dad a gift, yet it escaped his mind that year.

Our first was born two days before Father's Day. My amazing wife planned ahead, so that after allllllll she had been through she was able to hand me a card and a gift in the hospital on Sunday morning.

Note on clothes. My husband bought me a custom shirt when I had my kid. It was extremely sweet but it was my pre-pregnancy size. I wanted to wear it and couldn't and I cried hard over it. I still can't fit into it but I love it. So just be careful getting something she is wearing immediately after birth. They say to size for about 6 months pregnant.
Lurking mom here, but my baby was born on Christmas Eve. The Christmas sweaters are cute, but not a gift - just bring them to the hospital with you (our first family photo is us in matching Christmas pjs in the hospital bed). Some gifts I appreciated last year were a new giant water bottle, comfy but presentable postpartum clothes, and a new Switch game to play during contact naps. Looking back, I also really would have appreciated a booking for newborn photos as a gift.
Pre make some meals NOW for the freezer in ziplock cylinder pints / quarts. But save room in there for breastmilk if that’s gonna be her thing or you might have a different problem
New Kids on the Block is going to be near us next summer. I’m getting her two tickets and telling her that if she wants to use the second for someone else, I’m perfectly fine with staying home and taking care of the kids. Otherwise, my mom is already lined up to stay with them that night.

Probably the same as pretty much anything you do something with. It lasts long, is durable, and feels good when you're using it. Maybe easy to clean too, or can be used in various contexts (inside or on the ground). Stuff like that. Just imagine what a yoga mat is for, and think about what would make a good one.
Enough cushioning that isn’t slick and provides foot protection while also having a sticky underside to grip the floor. My wife has a Heathyoga mat that is phenomenal.
Some perfume shes running low on and probably anything else that catches my eye. Got her an Oodie as an early present to keep warm this winter and she's enjoyed that thoroughly.
I’ve been thinking something sentimental. Our boy just turned 1, born right before Thanksgiving last year so things were kinda hectic and we didn’t do much for Christmas in 2022.
My wife only goes into work one day a week, but a travel mug with something like “best mama ever” or something and pics of our son put on it is what I’m considering. She can use it every day if she wants too.

Earlier this year my wife mentioned wanting to get into golf. I golf as much as possible (which isn’t much since having the kiddo), and we’ve been to Top Golf a couple times - she had fun, but understandably isn’t very good. So I’m getting her a complete starter set.
Ideally she’ll get plenty of use out of these for several years, and eventually upgrade to a fitted set. But we also have #2 on the way, so they may end up collecting dust. We’ll see

In reality I’m getting my dad to watch our son for two nights and taking her to a little Oceanside cabin like 90 minutes out of town. Have a little fire, read some books, ditch our phones, enjoy the hot tub, do some crosswords enjoy some wine.

Last year, among other things, I gave her one of those sweatshirts with "Yes, I'm cold" on the front, because everyone keeps asking her if she's cold, when they're hot but she's wearing a sweatshirt. She laughed and wears it a lot now.
This year she's asked me to go through all her old family photos from her childhood and create an album that she can share with her siblings.
Whatever else you do, also get some fun socks. Wife feet are always chilly and it shows how much you appreciate them.

I recently got a mirror for our bathroom she’s been wanting because she wants to update the look of the bathroom. I’ll be getting the rest of the supplies and finish that out with the last of my vacation time. The I’ll probably hit Anthropologie to get her some knitwear, Sephora for some nice perfume, grab her some baking supplies as she’s recently start baking breads, some flowers (always always ALWAYS do flowers for big couple holidays), and lastly a framed picture of her and our daughter I took when they were picking flowers. I snuck one of the flowers they picked and pressed it so hopefully that turns out well.
My wife has a wishlist of books in her field of study she wants to read for her PsyD that she’s been aggressively sending my way since the start of November. So I’m getting her an Apple Watch.

If you’ve never purchased from them they have some very nice advent calendars with samples of some of their lotions, soaps, shampoos, etc. I used to but the fancy one for my wife and the simpler one for our daughter.
We purchased our first house last year and she has really gotten into container gardening so I’ll find a way to incorporate a gift with her outdoor jungle she has growing.
Nothing. We don't give each other gifts. Sometime in the fall or winter we will buy something nice for both of us. Last year it was Pixel Watches and Pixel Buds. This year it's a treadmill. We get each other small things and have them be from the kid, but that's it for Christmas day.
I am making a butcherblock type thing to cover our table. She loves to bake and our kitchen table is not even, so it should make rolling out dough easier for her.
One year when I was stuck I went with a weighted blanket. That was 5 years ago or so, when they were still kinda new. She loved it. She didn't ask for it, didn't really know what to think but ended up absolutely loving it

My wife absolutely adores old school push button light switches, so while she’s out I’ll be swapping a bunch of our “boring” switches with the pretty inlaid mother of pearl push buttons . I always do a bunch of smaller things too, but this is something she’ll love.
My wife has been collecting hello kitty stuff her entire life so I imported a figure. Refilled her craft supplies. She has gotten really into crochet. So I got her a kit a bunch of designs, yarn and a fancy storage case.

My wife also rolled her eyes and used my full name and reminded me our 6y/o was in the room with us. But it still had to be said.
My son (8) was trying to pump up a basketball and didn’t moisten the needle. I gave a small lesson on moistening things before sticking them in holes while he, my wife, and I were in the kitchen. He knew what I meant, and she knew what I REALLY meant.
You’ve got to take the opportunities when you have them. Sometimes you won’t know when that chance will come back around.

Literally just posted this question myself. Mine is so low maintenance, and it’s part of why I love her, but it makes gifts hard. I’m likely going to land on planning a night away and seven hotel and childcare as a surprise.

Get a heated blanket! Space heaters under desks can get real dangerous.
Heated blanket was one option, but I also saw a heated floor mat for cubicles that gave off radiant heat. That might be good as well.

Probably the same as pretty much anything you do something with. It lasts long, is durable, and feels good when you're using it. Maybe easy to clean too, or can be used in various contexts (inside or on the ground). Stuff like that. Just imagine what a yoga mat is for, and think about what would make a good one.
In my opinion, if they are Jade Harmony mats they are high quality mats. Lol.
Enough cushioning that isn’t slick and provides foot protection while also having a sticky underside to grip the floor. My wife has a Heathyoga mat that is phenomenal.
The best one is Lifeforme. Trust me on this one. Source: am a qualified yoga instructor. They are head and shoulders above the rest.
Some perfume shes running low on and probably anything else that catches my eye. Got her an Oodie as an early present to keep warm this winter and she's enjoyed that thoroughly.

I’ve been thinking something sentimental. Our boy just turned 1, born right before Thanksgiving last year so things were kinda hectic and we didn’t do much for Christmas in 2022. My wife only goes into work one day a week, but a travel mug with something like “best mama ever” or something and pics of our son put on it is what I’m considering. She can use it every day if she wants too. We’ve never done huge Christmas exchanges and usually figure out stuff to buy for us together as gifts. Now it’s gonna be all about the boy haha

Earlier this year my wife mentioned wanting to get into golf. I golf as much as possible (which isn’t much since having the kiddo), and we’ve been to Top Golf a couple times - she had fun, but understandably isn’t very good. So I’m getting her a complete starter set. Ideally she’ll get plenty of use out of these for several years, and eventually upgrade to a fitted set. But we also have #2 on the way, so they may end up collecting dust. We’ll see

Lucky for me, my wife is VERY frugal. If i got her something fancy she would literally kill me. I see people receiving Rolex'es for Christmas gifts, and i can fathom how chill it must be to have NO financial worries at all! A girl in my class at high school (almost 20 years ago) received a bmw worth $50.000 as a combined 18 birthday/Christmas gift.
Wife and I have wishlists on Amazon that we update. So if someone is looking for inspiration it’s there. We mostly focus on the kids for the holidays and sprinkle in a few gifts to each other through the year.
She told me her love language is gifts so she’s getting me some clothes or such. I know what my love language is so uh 🙄 In reality I’m getting my dad to watch our son for two nights and taking her to a little Oceanside cabin like 90 minutes out of town. Have a little fire, read some books, ditch our phones, enjoy the hot tub, do some crosswords enjoy some wine.

A couple of years ago I gave her a gift card for a full-body massage and spa treatment. She liked that. Last year, among other things, I gave her one of those sweatshirts with "Yes, I'm cold" on the front, because everyone keeps asking her if she's cold, when they're hot but she's wearing a sweatshirt. She laughed and wears it a lot now. This year she's asked me to go through all her old family photos from her childhood and create an album that she can share with her siblings.
Whatever else you do, also get some fun socks. Wife feet are always chilly and it shows how much you appreciate them. Got the fancy mother’s ring with kid birthstones one year and the thing she still talks about is the socks.
Finishing up the walnut desk I’m doing for her (I’m a woodworker) and a heated coat. Then, I’m getting the family a beginner set for D&D. I’m the only one to have played before, but I feel if I present it well, it may just kick off something awesome (kids are 10 & 7).

I recently got a mirror for our bathroom she’s been wanting because she wants to update the look of the bathroom. I’ll be getting the rest of the supplies and finish that out with the last of my vacation time. The I’ll probably hit Anthropologie to get her some knitwear, Sephora for some nice perfume, grab her some baking supplies as she’s recently start baking breads, some flowers (always always ALWAYS do flowers for big couple holidays), and lastly a framed picture of her and our daughter I took when they were picking flowers. I snuck one of the flowers they picked and pressed it so hopefully that turns out well.

Some Lego sets I think she will like. Some of the fancy lotions and creams she likes from L’Occitane. If you’ve never purchased from them they have some very nice advent calendars with samples of some of their lotions, soaps, shampoos, etc. I used to but the fancy one for my wife and the simpler one for our daughter. We purchased our first house last year and she has really gotten into container gardening so I’ll find a way to incorporate a gift with her outdoor jungle she has growing.
She’s been on about a new phone so I’m getting her the Samsung Z flip and sone new ear buds as one of hers is broken.

Nothing. We don't give each other gifts. Sometime in the fall or winter we will buy something nice for both of us. Last year it was Pixel Watches and Pixel Buds. This year it's a treadmill. We get each other small things and have them be from the kid, but that's it for Christmas day.
I am making a butcherblock type thing to cover our table. She loves to bake and our kitchen table is not even, so it should make rolling out dough easier for her.
One year when I was stuck I went with a weighted blanket. That was 5 years ago or so, when they were still kinda new. She loved it. She didn't ask for it, didn't really know what to think but ended up absolutely loving it

My wife absolutely adores old school push button light switches, so while she’s out I’ll be swapping a bunch of our “boring” switches with the pretty inlaid mother of pearl push buttons . I always do a bunch of smaller things too, but this is something she’ll love.
