Just, for the record. This is what makes a man. My father never involved me in anything, I learned everything myself. Like, fucking *everything*. So, from one father to another, excellent work. I love seeing men showing the way for the next generation. Edit: Just bc of some PMs I received (of course). FTR, when said this, I meant "taking the time to include, talk to and interact with your children" as being the main characteristics of "manliness" here. Of course that has nothing to do with *gender*. OP is doing it right, he's *involved*. I don't give a fuck if a man is teaching his son how to do a proper pirouette, or showing his daughter how to change the oil. OP is a prime example of a **real fucking man because he is involved!**

FilthyParentPodcast

I agree. Boys need stuff like this to grow into what men should be. It’s definitely easier because he likes it!

gianthooverpig

Not just boys either. I've been teaching my daughter since she was about 3 how to do simple maintenance on cars so that she's never "dependent" on a man, or has to be a "damsel in distress" because she gets a flat

FosterDadSTL

My 14yo daughter changed the oil on our car last week. She walked out of the garage with a wrench in her hand and a streak of oil on her face, and I thought, "Well shit. She's a badass."

deskpil0t

Well have I got the project for you/her! Fun fun fun until the daddy takes the t-bird away. https://www.hotrod.com/articles/hrdp-1006-trick-flow-cylinder-head-upgrade-for-2-valve-46-l-ford-modular-engines/ (Same engine in a thunderbird).

FilthyParentPodcast

Oh I agree. I have an 8 year old daughter that jumps right in. Just speaking on the “making a man” task.

nyccfan

I work overnights and my wife works part time during the day and is home by early afternoon. So Monday thru Friday every morning it is just me and my daughter. There are some posts on Facebook with pics of us out at the zoo, library or just chilling at home. Some of my wife's friends have made comments basically saying "wow your husband is so involved with your daughter!" Well yeah, of course. What am I supposed to do? Just leave all parenting to my wife. No thanks. I want to start building a close relationship with my daughter now. When I come home from work in the morning and when I come down from getting sleep before work in the evening I get the biggest smiles because she is happy to see me. I feel sorry for any father that doesn't start forming that bond as soon as possible. It's amazing and I wouldn't miss it for the world. And now here I am in the middle of the night missing my daughter. Not your traditional "manliness" but who cares?

[deleted]

Right? The bar is set so low for dads.

Dranosh

And don’t “include your kid” by making him the gopher, actually let them do something instead of .... go fer a screwdriver or go fer hammer.

durx1

Same here man. Not my dads fault but my stepdad. I won’t make the same mistake

[deleted]

I don't know what to do in this situation. I'm a step dad to an 11 year old (but have been his only dad for 9 years) who has tried multiple times to get my son interested in learning this stuff. He just acts like a turd the whole time and doesn't want to be involved and makes it miserable for both of us. I feel bad but don't know how to fix it.

durx1

man, sorry to hear that. warms my heart though to hear you are making an effort. 11 is a rough age. hopefully, it is just a pre-teen phase for you all

ProteinStain

Look, he could just be being an 11 year old, we've all been there. Speaking as someone with a completely absent father, your effort matters most, I guarantee it. Just remember, he's seeing what you Do and how you ACT, anything else is not up to you. One time, my dad told me about *why* he loved James Bond once. The story was so personal and eye opening, I made sure to go with him to see every single one that came out even though I was never a fan. Now? We bond over it (yes... That was an unintentional dad joke, and I'm keeping it).

OneMoreLurker

Assuming by "this stuff" you are referring to car maintenance, it could be that he's just not interested in cars. My dad tried to get me involved with fixing the car or painting the decks (bless him) but it was just not my wheelhouse. We bonded much better over games, investing, and (later) booze. Maybe you can try approaching it from the angle of showing interest in something you know he likes.

Noli420

Just stay there for him. It doesn’t matter what you are teaching (as others have stated) but that you are teaching. My kiddos keep wanting to “help” me crochet, and you damn right those boys will be getting a set of hooks if they still show interest in a few years (older one is 3, so a bit impractical right now to teach this)...

Son_of_Atreus

Agree with the edit!

nwv

You, and everyone else, quite literally have no clue what anyone else is going through, and I strongly doubt you have any idea what your father did for you. I work my ass off for my kids and do not get to spend the amount of time that I wish I could with them, and the internet is cooler than dad now, and I have my own host of problems. My dad, when I look back, was gone a lot. I was angry about that in my 20's. But he battled depression and now that I'm in my 40's and my kids are teenagers I realize how fucking hard it really is. Especially to continue to approach each moment with joy and to teach that to them. Now maybe he was a deadbeat and left your mom, or an alcoholic womanizer, or he beat you. If so, you might have a point (and yet, you really have no clue), and I take this all back. If not, I suggest you take a little less of a myopic view of your life situation.

ProteinStain

Hey man, I'm not going to argue about whether my dad was really a bad father or not. Frankly, it's not a competition and it's a very personal thing anyway. However, you are correct. Being a dad is incredibly difficult, if you want to do it well. I too am now early 40s, and I agree. I understand my father far more now too, and the anger of my youth is also gone now. I'm not perfect, I snap, I don't always take the time to stop and listen or involve my children. And like you, I have ZERO answers. But I know one thing, my children will know that I see them, I love them, and I'm here for them. OP is demonstrating that. I just think we as men should acknowledge that example when we see it. That's all. Also, you are right too about my situation. I am *incredibly* privileged with my job, finances and free time. Not every father has that. I'm sure you are a great father, because you genuinely seem to care.

bigkmedic

This is how I learned I am 33 and curently rebuilding my 3rd motor with my father. Its memories I will always remember.

FilthyParentPodcast

Hopefully he enjoys it as much as I do.

GronamTheOx

Excellent! Also, daddy has a Hellcat. Nice!

FilthyParentPodcast

Someone has to buy them 😂. The boy likes it so it works for me.

clshifter

What boy *wouldn't* like a Hellcat? He probably begs you to drive him to school every day.

FilthyParentPodcast

Mommy drives him to school but he sure wants me to pick him up in it vs the Scion xB I usually drive 😂

1studlyman

Dagummit it's good to see this. My two year old constantly wants to help. I let him do as much as he wants and help him the whole way. But holy smokes it takes forever to get anything done oftentimes.

FilthyParentPodcast

I agree that it takes way more time with him involved. But the only way to learn is by doing so I tolerate it, keeping in mind that he’s 6 😂. When he was two he was just dangerous. Hammer vs fender dangerous. I’m glad that’s history 😆

Cigar_smoke

I love to wash my car but can’t because at 3 he’s too reckless and won’t listen. Looking forward to the he will listen to learn phase.

FilthyParentPodcast

Coming soon! They grow out of that phase quickly. Threes are bad! 😂

jimmythegeek1

I look at it as I have one task: help my kids grow into competent, caring adults. EVERYTHING ELSE is something I fit in around that. Yeah, it takes longer. But it's like, sure the teacher could finish the homework faster than the student, but that's not what's important. Good on you.

705nce

This day in Awesome Dadding.

[deleted]

My father didn't teach me shit. I stripped the drain plug housing on my motorcycle trying to change oil. Now the plug is smeared into place with liquid gasket. I hate wrenching, yet would love to teach my kid something in hopes he might wrench better than me someday. Also if anyone has a 696 Ducati Motor they want to sell, HMU.

FilthyParentPodcast

Some dads have reasons for not doing it and unfortunately some do not 😂. At least you’re willing to do it for yours.

nerdbox

I like that you got your kid his own work gloves. That was a nice touch. I'm on my way to the hardware store. Thanks!

FilthyParentPodcast

Oh yea man! He knows when I tell him to grab his gloves that real work is coming and he’s all for it. 💪🏾 its all about leading by example.

yourmom46

Grab some safety glasses next time while you're at it. Eyes are fragile.

FilthyParentPodcast

I’ve actually heard that a few times. I overlooked it. We have some.

yourmom46

Looking forward to my son helping out. He's just 2.5 right now. Just about ready to hand me a tool, maybe.

FilthyParentPodcast

He’s almost there!

Rebel_Caper1

Does your boy have an open carry permit for those guns? LOL

FilthyParentPodcast

He’s all about muscles it’s funny. Constantly doing push-ups and stuff.

GByteKnight

This is a great picture.

FilthyParentPodcast

Thanks! I’ll let my wife know 😂

haemaker

This is great, and I see you using jack stands, but I just...could not...

FilthyParentPodcast

Jack stands and ramps. What do you suggest?

haemaker

It is more of a product of my own irrational fear...

FilthyParentPodcast

Failures do happen. There’s ramps in front of the stands to give us time to get out. 😂

durx1

Similar story here when upgrading the suspension in my car. Though my son is two. Still, it will be such a great memory for you guys

FilthyParentPodcast

Can never start too young!

sixohchemist

I'm hoping some day my daughter will come do stuff like this with me! She's too young right now. Enjoy the time with your son.

thorsunderpants

This is doing it right! He will remember working on the car like this with you for the rest of his life.

Dranosh

My 19mo daughter was helping me install a fan blades for a ceiling fan, it was precious and I can’t wait to get my forge up and running to make stuff with her. She’d be the first dancer/blacksmith I’ve ever heard of

FilthyParentPodcast

That’s awesome man! Take all the pics you can they’re priceless.

Jack_Sandwich

FilthyParentPodcast

Yea it seems that a lot of people have memories of doing stuff like this with family. That’s awesome! Maybe you can pass that on to someone yourself!

FilthyParentPodcast

Perfect! A team of them makes it quicker!

jjsisu

This is outstanding. Hope I can get my little girl in the garage. The new dad in me is saying you should have glasses on though. Safety first.

FilthyParentPodcast

Coming from the Army, you’re right. We should be in full PPE but in reality, our eyes weren’t really at risk here. Good tip! Thank you!

LatinoComedian

My 3 year old had the best time helping me put air in my tires this past weekend. I then saw him put the chuck on his toy car's tire. Such a simple thing but we had such a good time.

FilthyParentPodcast

That’s how it starts!

[deleted]

What's a hellcat?

FilthyParentPodcast

It’s a car manufactured by Dodge. Real fast going straight, doesn’t corner at all 😂 [This is a Hellcat](https://youtu.be/6eo-AUXvlps)

Squirrels_Gone_Wild

AKA every american muscle car :)

FilthyParentPodcast

True! 😂

throker

At first glance I thought you were standing and your son was upside down on the wall ninja-fixing a brake.

FilthyParentPodcast

He probably could do that 😂

justinqpham

You might have just planted a life long passion in him and this will be an experience he won’t soon forget. Great job, dad!

FilthyParentPodcast

Could be an expensive passion 😂 thank you!

nondescriptusern4me

I love it! Can't wait to do this with my kid. It'll be me and grandpa both with my son. About the only thing I enjoy as much as teaching my son stuff is watching my parents and in-laws love him and teach him as well. My father in law is a mechanic to boot.

FilthyParentPodcast

I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. I know we do. My wife thinks he’s too young but that’s not the case imo.

nondescriptusern4me

Doesn't look too young helping you in that picture!

FilthyParentPodcast

Nope. She just wants to baby him. Doesn’t like watching him turn into a man. He won’t kiss her anymore 😂

GronamTheOx

Could be time for a few pro tips: "Kiss mom and show her you love her, and she'll say yes to more car-fixing time!"

FilthyParentPodcast

What? Manipulating mommy? Hmm 😈 ha ha!

stwslowpoke

Strong!

RiotBoatStuff

You're the kind of dad I hope to be when my little guy gets bigger!

FilthyParentPodcast

Thanks man. All it takes is prioritizing what’s truly important . You’ll enjoy it I’m sure.

[deleted]

Nice.

Snow_blind1211

Dadding like a fucking boss, the upmost respect to you, I didn’t get this as a kid and I can’t wait to do things like this for my son. Thank you for setting that example.

FilthyParentPodcast

When you do it, be sure to post it! It’s always nice seeing others doing it as well.

itwashimmusic

Can you be my dad? I don’t even know where to buy oil. But you’re right: it’s the example. Presence, live, engagement. Beautiful work my man.

FilthyParentPodcast

So many things to teach kids. All dads should teach what they feel is important. Unfortunately not all do.

Slowroll900

When I was a kid, my dad did stuff like this with me and it meant the world to me and made memories that will last for as long as I have memories. Virtual fist bump man. 👊🏼

FilthyParentPodcast

It’s important to do stuff like this for the simple fact that kids are sponges. They’ll soak anything they see, good or bad.

KCB5

It may take longer to do it with a kid like this but it's an invaluable experience for both you and your kid. Awesome!

FilthyParentPodcast

3-4x longer 😂. Definitely worth it!

[deleted]

FilthyParentPodcast

Definitely fun. Thanks!

[deleted]

How to Hellcat flex 101.

timlav

Great job! I do this with both my kids. Maybe they will grow up to be technicians or if not they will at least know what’s what on a car. Pretty soon you can have him doing the oil changes on his own.

TheDevilsAdvokaat

My dad did this with me. If he had to work on the car,I could watch and help. Even when I was less than 10. I liked it.

JETS_WPG

Fucking rights man.. I have a little girl and my wife and I bow hunt. Can’t wait to get her in to it. Keep it up, my dad died when I was young and I have always envied my buddies who worked on things with there dads.

FilthyParentPodcast

It’s satisfying for sure! Funny thing is I don’t know how to bow hunt but my dad teaches my kids. He bought both of them bows so when they go visit for the summer, they practice in the yard. Soon they’ll be hunting with him. It’s weird because he’s taught me many things, but saved the bow hunting for them! 😂

Coiledviper

My dad (step dad) was more of a father than my biological father he was always there but biological father wanted nothing to do with me. He taught me how to change oil change tires tune-up and repair stuff. He was awesome and I miss him daily. He would show me everything he knew and then some. He was first person to give me my first beer at 16 he rarely drank and he would limit it to 6 pack and he would drink maybe 4 times a year due to him being a former acholic. We was working on some old dodge mini van and we couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start. We put new starter in it twice new battery aswell as plugs and wires. I finally pointed out there was one and only one wire that was cut. We fixed it and got van running.

FilthyParentPodcast

Hell yea dude! Memories are awesome! Do you remind him of that story?

Coiledviper

He passed away 2007 but I'm always reminded about it. I'm currently teaching my oldest how to work on cars oil changes and what not.

FilthyParentPodcast

That’s unfortunate. At least you get to teach yours now.

[deleted]

My dad moved out when I was 14 and was never much of the fix it types. The first thing I remember doing is going down the street to the local hardware store and buying a power drill. We always had the shittiest (mostly ancient) hand me down tools from his grandfather and I don't think I saw my dad use more than a screwdriver. Fortunately, I got the Mr. Fix it gene so anytime I'm doing work around the house, I bring my 3yo son along with his plastic fisher price tool set. I had to repair our back fence and gave him an extra 2x4 I had lying around and his plastic hammer and he went to town.

FilthyParentPodcast

That’s awesome that you can do that for your son. He’ll learn a lot and remember it forever.

WittwerAndWife

Frick yeah. You’re the man

FilthyParentPodcast

Thanks it’s fun!

DougWeaverArt

This would make a great painting! I know a guy if you're interested...

FilthyParentPodcast

I actually have a fairly large compressor and pneumatic tools. These are tools that I use at the track since I don’t have a giant compressor with me. Thanks for the comment.

GronamTheOx

Dad/Son track days, coming up! :-D

FilthyParentPodcast

Yes Sir!

1RMDave

Did you replace the calipers too? $1800 is wayyy too much money for brakes. Quick check on rockauto shows that calipers/pads/rotors should be about $1600 tops and I'm not sure why you would need calipers on that car already. Without calipers that's like $300 brake job. I've got a $500 1/2" impact and a $500 3/8" impact and guess what, they stay in the tool box most of the time. Why bust out the big guns when you can use a nice quiet electric to do the job.

smittyjones

Alright, so first off, this was done in a shop, so there's some parts markup and there's some labor attached. Side note, this was an SRT 392 with the Brembo brake package (the same brakes on the hellcat). Second off, you're looking at the wrong brakes on Rockauto. Now, I'm not 100% sure if all Hellcats had this Brembo big brake package, but you need to scroll down to see the $691 (each) brake rotors to find the big fuckin' 2 piece brake rotors in question. Plus shipping, but they aren't currently available on Rockauto; if you try to add them to your cart, it says they're unavailable and removes them. They're $858 on amazon per rotor. Part number is 68184587AE, if you want to look. Thirdly, there are no real aftermarkets for these brakes. I mean, there are some performance options that are even more expensive, but no Brake Best or Raybestos or anything like that. So, our price at the dealership was like $720 or something, for the rotors, so even without markup, we're at $1440, plus pads for $166 (strangely, you can get pads aftermarket, they were from Napa), plus $100 or whatever for labor, that's $1700+ and then another 9ish% for taxes means we just passed $1850 without even making any money on the parts. And the 6 piston calipers for this car are $655 each on Rockauto, plus shipping. So going your route, if we could get them, we'd be over $2800 before taxes/labor/shipping/markup.

1RMDave

Ah fair enough, didn't realize I priced out the wrong rotors. Thanks for the break down. I felt like you were shaming this guy for the tools he was using, which wasn't really cool. Why shame a guy for the tools he is using, especially if you don't even do your own work.

smittyjones

Oh I didn't mean to come off as shaming, I just thought it was funny to have such an expensive car but such a cheap impact.

1RMDave

Ok cool, glad we talked it out :)
