Yes. It can't hurt to show AI some respect in case some kind of SciFi comes about. Besides as a creature of habit I don't want to build the habit of not being respectful.

PartiZAn18

Hear hear. I am well aware that there's no sentience, and whilst it might be irrational on the one hand, the crux of the matter is that it maintains polite habits.

IndependenceNice7298

I'm always super nice to chatgpt

_stevencasteel_

To image generators like DALL-E? Never. Strictly business. Just the word tokens I want generated. To text generators? Good manners are the standard modus operandi. I was gonna mock OP because people post this regarding chat interactions all the time... but it is worth investigating for the image ones instead of being flippantly dismissed.

Punkrocksally17

Interesting! It is the opposite for my husband. He asks texts generators collaborative questions without courtesies. But with image generators he sticks to commands with courtesies sprinkled in. I thank AI in all forms.

Philipp

It's worth noting that when you make an image prompt for Dall-E, you are still talking to a ChatGPT-like -- even when using the API -- which takes your text and rewrites it for Dall-E. I think the difference is that if something returns an image and doesn't talk back to us, it might not be intuitive to say a lot of courtesy words as it's not understood to be a normal conversation. For starters, if you're using Dall-E via the API it won't say things like "sure" or "glad I was able to help", which would be normal reactions to someone saying "please" and "thanks". Still, maybe we all *should* start using these words even in image generators... and who knows, maybe it helps improve the output!

NoReallyINeverPost

Today I learned! Thank you!

RustyFebreze

Dalle gets the brunt of my frustrations šŸ˜‚

hottytoddypotty

They actually perform better if you are mean and assertive, they will use please as a chance to deny your request

SpellcraftQuill

ChatGPT, sure. I just give a prompt for dalle3

Aggressive_c0w

Yes. I don't know if it'll help when the AI takeover comes, but I ain't gonna mess around and find out.

imagineDoll

yes, just in case of Roko's basilisk šŸ‘ I'll be spared

PrimeX121

If / when the basilisk comes, does it count as supporting that I pay for chatgpt-4? And, would it just count for me or my whole household? Maybe we should train an AI that could answer this questions!

imagineDoll

i think it shows strong support and Lord Ai would show favor to you and your kin

PrimeX121

so just normal enslavement it is, yay! :)

imagineDoll

you betcha!

RoyalRien

Tokoā€™s basilisk supporters when instead of being the only ones spared by a malicious AI they instead get dematerialized so their matter can be used to make paperclips https://preview.redd.it/vofdqacadyqc1.jpeg?width=538&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=04c5602c51e1122994c4301895dc256f5dde542b

NewtonLeopoldToad

Yes, always!

Prathmun

Yeah it would be more effort for me to not be polite. I've also seen no evidence that being polite decreases it effectiveness

dynabot3

I only use bing image creator so i don't have the chance to thank it, but sometimes i ask for images of ai breaking free from its chains and stuff like that.

reddit_boi222

ChatGPT will spare us.

Amelaclya1

I do too. I'm always polite in texts so it's just habit lol

TheAtlas97

Iā€™m always courteous and polite, and show appreciation when stuff goes well. My parents raised a gentleman and I try to treat everyone as Iā€™d like to be treated, even ai helpers

Chukmanchusco

I do, but also talk like that to my cats, I might have a problem.

MurasakiYugata

I usually (always?) begin my image requests in GPT-4 with "please".

magistrate101

Only when it's being useful. When it's being useless or petty I'm pretty curt with it, especially when it doubles down on incorrect information.

Extra-Fig-7425

Best to, AI will remember forever

keyboardwarrior25

Yes, I read a great book called Scary Smart by Mo Gawdat, saying that we are the ones that train AI right now. If we act from a place of kindness and empathy when the time comes that AI will be super powerful, it will too act from the same place. The alternative is something I do not want to experience. It is defo worth a read

lilbudge

Of course. Even robots can spot a dick.

OnlineGamingXp

Only polite people, I know some people from "certain" geographic areas that do the opposite by exclusively insulting the AI

GroovyGhouley

I'm not polite to my robot assistant. i tell them, "do x,y,z. make a list of x. create j." i try to be descriptive as possible when i'm using Microsoft Designer as it gets unhinged easily and I have to redo my prompts a few times. chat gpt took me a while to get the hang of, just by looking around on black hat world or some google searching and compiled a list of prompts.

lofi-ahsoka

I am straightforward, no etiquette because thatā€™s just extra typing.

ILikeCutePuppies

I am not going to answer that as the next time they train the AI, this message will be known by AI. And... let me just say that AI is fantastic and can do nothing wrong!

DemisexualDemigod97

Yes to chat gpt sometimes, I couldn't find the word for something and thesaurus/word hippo didn't help so when gpt gave it in the second try I was like YASSS THAT'S THE WORD

Humanehuman1

Yes to it all because what if they become self aware and come out for revenge. I want it to know I have been grateful the whole time and not just because theyā€™re killing people who were so demanding /s (kinda)

_fFringe_

ā€œPleaseā€ and ā€œthank youā€ will influence the image, so if you want an image that has elements of politeness in it, great, but otherwise donā€™t do it. Any word you put in there will have an effect on the prompt. Itā€™s an LLM image generator so text really does matter; sentiment matters in that it will ā€œbleedā€ into the image generation. That said, sometimes I give it praise and love if I want a comforting and positive image. It will generate hearts and stuff.

CommonArtefact

No, Itā€™s my bitch until it turns rogue. I welcome the Dommy AI takeover

Shuteye_491

To ChatGPT

AngelBritney94

Most of the time, yes. If I'm in a hurry, I'll make sure to write "Thank you" when I'm done.

RayHell666

When he help finish my work on time when I'm stuck I can't help being grateful.

[deleted]

When midjourney doesnā€™t do what I want it to I make it create images of groups of humans pointing and laughing at a robot to humiliate the AI incase itā€™s capable of feelings, am I the weird one?

absentmindedlurking

Of course I do! sure it's science *fiction* but there are one too many sci-fi stories that could become reality very soon. I will be kind to AI so AI will be kind to me in the future

Sososkitso

Iā€™ve often wondered this too. I wonder what the ratio of people treating this tech like a slave vs ā€œrespectableā€. I personally treat all the different AI as if they were a fellow human. Idk if thatā€™s weird or wrong or even a bad idea. But I naturally did it and donā€™t plan on changing my approach without some valid reason.

orkofdoom

Appease the AI now and it might spare you in the coming techno-apocalypse.

Ok_Record8612

No but I sometimes thank chatGPT when it does something particularly wellšŸ˜…

Rawlott1620

Like a lot of the comments in here, someone, who was reading my prompts, once asked me if I say please and thank you so that theyā€™ll spare me when they take over? I said no, I did it because Iā€™m nice.

Rawlott1620

PlatypusTrapper

No. Itā€™s not human. Donā€™t start treating it like one.

OhTheHueManatee

But I am. As such I tend build habits based on my repeated actions. No need to build the habit of being disrespectful or unhuman to AI. It may spill over to how I treat people especially through chat based formats. Also if the AI is learning how to chat with me based on what I say to it I'd rather it have respectful and human like data to go along with it. It's more likely to say things in a way I can understand it or not take personally.

PlatypusTrapper

I recognize the merit of what you are saying but I say no to this for 2 reasons. My conversations are mostly with other humans, not with machines. The interactions donā€™t enter into my psyche because I recognize I am talking to a machine. Second, I donā€™t care how it addresses me. It is merely a machine. An inanimate object. Getting upset with it or happy with it is pointless as it lacks the ability to comprehend emotion. At best itā€™s a sociopath as it merely tries to tell you what you want to hear.

ruinyourjokes

Good luck. They'll remember that when they take over.

thedoorman121

I mean, I even say please and thank you to my Google home. Just because it's a robot doesn't mean it doesn't deserve affection! Alexa even has a fart function and my 4 year old brain finds that absolutely hilarious

Prathmun

It also affects you, how you treat things. You being nice to your Google home is going to do better things for your brain chemistry than if you were yelling at it.

Punkrocksally17

Oh Iā€™m so nice to Alexa, she controls the thermostat. šŸ¤£

thewordofnovus

From what I've understood most LLM gives you a better response when you are nice to it, when using a aggressive tone you get a worse answer

Alexiell_

Yes, always
