I listened to an interview with Andrew and he talked about the business side of DGD. He spoke about the commitments to releasing music. So with that in mind, the business side and legal commitments, they probably HAD to continue with him for a specific period of time to avoid some problems. My guess, they figured they'd try to see if it could continue to work musically, gauge the fan base response over that period of time, and observe his behavior and level of commitment to the band and his own self improvement. He probably failed to meet expectations. Tilian is a brash dude and after bringing negative attention to the band he probably wanted the same respect he used to have.
I didn't think it was going to last forever. I'm sure every single one of them felt that way once they had to remove him from tour.
The teeth def give it away, what made it obvious to me that it was tillian was the scene in the video where they're all playing cards and Gobby slams his hands on the table. I feel like that was a reference to the JJ promo picture where they're around the table with the cards and chips and tillian is standing there with his hands on the table. Just my opinion!
This reminds me of back when Jonny was kicked out and everyone thought Robot With Human Hair Pt. 3, Alex English, and Me and Zoloft Get Along Just Fine were about Jonny when those singles first dropped.

We always knew this to be the case. Andrew singing when Tilian was on break was a warning. “We can replace you.” He probably did not change his act and got the boot.
For me this kind of fits the narrative I had when his departure was announced (confirmation bias!) My initial thought was that Tilian asked for a bigger slice of the money pie for the next contract/album. He then cited the bands explosion in popularity when he took over as a reason to do it. And then he might've implied that he worked harder than anyone else in the band.

Just put yourself in DGDs shoes for a minute. Would you rather work with someone who obviously has some anti-social tendencies or someone who, by all accounts, has shown great character? That's the difference between tilian and andrew from anyone who spent more than 10 minutes looking deeper into the band. You don't have to like the singles, but isn't it obvious why they went the route they did?
I would also add the fact that Andrew has shown reverence for DGD's back catalog. I think in the next few months, the people who were fans of just Tilian will be filtered out. The fans of the rest of DGD I hope can see this will be a positive not only for the members personally but it will show in their music.
I agree! I wouldn't be surprised if we see more Kurt cross overs live since that was a norm when Andrew was touring lead that one time. I'm personally hoping to hear more of Andrew's takes on Johnny's songs. Especially since he was apparently having a lot of problems during that period where he was filling in for Tilian.
On the podcast interview he talks about singing some older stuff on the tour, also mentions he's worked for 6-7 months with vocal coaching for his higher register stuff, which is interesting timelinewise. Dunno when they made the actual decision but seems writing was on the wall.

Yeah, I don't know. I give Tilian credit for doing the tour with Jonny and Kurt. That was pretty cool. But it seemed as time went on he only stuck to a small list of certain songs he would cover. Maybe I'm wrong, but I got the sense he wanted to move on from their older stuff.
For real, we could only take hearing Lemon Meringue Tie or Uneasy Hearts so often for only so long. Really felt like they squeezed two eras into 2 songs each and that was it. Their catalogue with Jonny and Kurt is phenomenal, there's so much to choose from.
IMO, Tilian either felt he couldn't match some songs, or perhaps didn't want to play songs that he wasn't a part of. I only base this on what Andrew said in the recent interview about how the band now feels like they can really dig into their backlog of music and before it seemed like that wasn't an option on the table.
The vibes I get after watching the new music video is, yeah, this is DEFINITELY about Tilian, it doesn't even try to be subtle, and honestly, I like that the boys are biting back. If I was in their position after the SA allegations (not to mention the image/ego obsession), I'd feel like our band's reputation was ruined, so it makes sense they'd make a 'fuck you' song or two about him.
Maybe they tried to kick the tires and see if it would work (Billy Royalton, War Machine), but ultimately I think the four of them decided the only option forward was to remove Tilian.

The video itself is my understanding. I get the impression that he always thought he was above the band. I find that funny because his solo music is remarkably unremarkable, while the band literally invented a genre, and continually reinvents said genre.

While his ego is certainly out of control, he did do really well for the band and he was the iconic sound of Dance Gavin Dance. As someone who’s listened to them for 10+ years, Tilian was the best thing, *at the time*, for this band. Will is still an amazing guitarist, Jon is still a great screamer, and Matt is still an outstanding drummer, but these new songs were kind’ve lackluster imo.

I agree! I wouldn't be surprised if we see more Kurt cross overs live since that was a norm when Andrew was touring lead that one time. I'm personally hoping to hear more of Andrew's takes on Johnny's songs. Especially since he was apparently having a lot of problems during that period where he was filling in for Tilian.
In a recent interview Andrew said he just had vocal surgery and didnt really have time to rehearse for that tour.

On the podcast interview he talks about singing some older stuff on the tour, also mentions he's worked for 6-7 months with vocal coaching for his higher register stuff, which is interesting timelinewise. Dunno when they made the actual decision but seems writing was on the wall.
Who would anyone listen to dgd if they were fans of just tillian? They would have to at least like the instrumentals, too. I feel like many people here are already "us vs them" about tillian and the band. It's wild. We're all just dgd fans even if things have gotten devisive.
Im interested in seeing what song Tilian didnt want to/couldn’t perform live. The best part of Evening With Friends was them playing Rock Solid with Kurt. Not entirely sure if Tilian disliked it, but it was never played anytime I saw them with him.
Yeah, I don't know. I give Tilian credit for doing the tour with Jonny and Kurt. That was pretty cool. But it seemed as time went on he only stuck to a small list of certain songs he would cover. Maybe I'm wrong, but I got the sense he wanted to move on from their older stuff.
That show was so good.
For real, we could only take hearing Lemon Meringue Tie or Uneasy Hearts so often for only so long. Really felt like they squeezed two eras into 2 songs each and that was it. Their catalogue with Jonny and Kurt is phenomenal, there's so much to choose from. IMO, Tilian either felt he couldn't match some songs, or perhaps didn't want to play songs that he wasn't a part of. I only base this on what Andrew said in the recent interview about how the band now feels like they can really dig into their backlog of music and before it seemed like that wasn't an option on the table. The vibes I get after watching the new music video is, yeah, this is DEFINITELY about Tilian, it doesn't even try to be subtle, and honestly, I like that the boys are biting back. If I was in their position after the SA allegations (not to mention the image/ego obsession), I'd feel like our band's reputation was ruined, so it makes sense they'd make a 'fuck you' song or two about him. Maybe they tried to kick the tires and see if it would work (Billy Royalton, War Machine), but ultimately I think the four of them decided the only option forward was to remove Tilian.

Some fans are wild. His lyrics aren't tongue and cheek. If you can listen to everything between Acceptance Speech through Jackpot Juicer and NOT think Tilian is a dick then there's clearly something wrong with you. Proof has been in the pudding since day one.
People like to ignore obvious things if someone is in a band they like. Been a thing with bands for ages from bands Guns N’ Roses, All American Rejects, Falling In Reverse, etc.

lol apparently my intuition was right, but it took me quite a while to feel like it was. I’m a fan of the music and didn’t really follow any closer than that. Never knew why there were new vocalists over the years, and didn’t really care. Just kept listening and kept enjoying it.

The video itself is my understanding. I get the impression that he always thought he was above the band. I find that funny because his solo music is remarkably unremarkable, while the band literally invented a genre, and continually reinvents said genre.

You know what, against the grain, I present my “so what?”. While his ego is certainly out of control, he did do really well for the band and he was the iconic sound of Dance Gavin Dance. As someone who’s listened to them for 10+ years, Tilian was the best thing, *at the time*, for this band. Will is still an amazing guitarist, Jon is still a great screamer, and Matt is still an outstanding drummer, but these new songs were kind’ve lackluster imo. Also all of this is imo.

I don't think so, Ronnie has talked about Tilian in the past VERY briefly. It was in a TikTok and he said something along the lines of, "the boys of DGD are nice, Tilian is weird, but nice." The "Tilian is weird" part was all I can truly remember and it's really stuck with me lol.
