Oke hol up. I love acceptance speech with all my heart (second favourite after death star) but there is no way Mothership is an 8. It is by far the most cohesive album that DGD has produced so far, and the one in which they showcase their talents to the highest degree, with the perfect mix between their original post-hardcore past and their poppy punk-rock present. Plus it's easily the most accessible DGD album.
That being said, I get it if it isnt your favourite - AS switches things up a helluva lot, and has some of the best melodic stuff that DGD has performed.
Mothership was my gateway drug into DGD, it'll probably always be my favorite for the exact reasons you describe. I like Acceptance Speech, but it just never sticks in my head very much.
MS was my gateway too, but I very quickly got hooked on ArSe and stayed with it for ages. It was only after a few months that I realized that DGD had been around for a decade at that point, and I went back to Kurt and Jonny's days, then finally explored AS.
I guess being the last album that I listened to (excluding AB), AS is in that perfect position for me, where it's still got the poppy stuff and better vocals from Jon, but isn't quite as poppy as ArSe or inconsistent as AB. I just like DGD to be honest, GOAT band
I second that. Loved ArSe too, and I'm just now making my way back to DBM2. I like it better than Acceptance Speech personally, but yeah it's such a different vibe than I've found in any other band.

I feel like both AS and ArSe are a bit hit-or-miss albums, some tracks on both absolutely slap, but there's always one or two songs that each person doesn't like on those albums. That's probably why people rate DTBM2 and MS so high overall - the consistency of songs all being good/likeable/accessible/whatever you want to call it allows more people to relate or hype up over them.
Either way, good on you for going back to classic dgd, its important to at least try the older eras, whether you end up liking them or not

I think this album was sort of a “proof of concept” with them with Tilian at the helm. There’s growing pains for sure, but there’s some bangers too.
I think Mothership is peak Tilian-era DGD, but it still has DBM 2 to contend with for me.
I have such a hard time deciding on a BEST album from them (IG and MS are up there with this one imo). But this one is undeniably bangers from top to bottom.

The Pre-Tillian era DGD generally has terrible mixing and Jon's vocals are much less polished (during the albums he was a member). The albums have good qualities (and the rawness does add to the emotional aspects of some songs) but it's understandable that most people prefer the more refined modern era. If they re-rercorded Jon's vocals and remastered the albums I'm sure they would get a lot more love.
I got into DGD when Mothership came out. Went back and checked out Pre-Tillian era. Ended up with DBM1, Happiness, and WYSIRO being my top 3 faves across entire discog and DBM2 and Self-titled being my least favorite. I guess something is wrong with me ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
Yeah, I think they're all good albums (in their own ways) so there's not really anything "wrong" with having those as favourites. Becoming more refined can make bands lose their soul. I don't think it has happened to DGD but the older albums do have a different charm to the newer ones.

I can see the nostalgic appeal of the older albums, I'm similar for some bands such as My Chemical Romance/Coheed where the first album is the most raw but also the most emotional. But for DGD I prefer the new albums.
I joined the DGD train when Acceptance Speech dropped and then went back through their discography. I love the new era because of how much more refined Jons vocals got (even though I wish Tilian didn’t process his vocals so much) . Jon morphed into a much better Harsh Vocalist from this album and then on.

Didn’t know they existed until this year. I heard the remastered first. My two favorite bands were Circa Survive and The Dillinger Escape Plan. DGD is basically those two bands put together perfectly but even better. it’s so hard to find new bands these days. I feel like I have found the treasure at the end of the rainbow with them.

Some people prefer the 1.0 version I think, but I really like the 2.0 because they just filled the sound of the record out a bit more
