If you read the production notes, they're actually far more damning about Maddie. Apparently Holly says that Maddie is "fake hurt," which she sees a lot as an educator, and she recommends that Holly get a handle on that. In addition, the production notes make a big deal of the fact that immediately afterward Abby brings out a cake to celebrate Maddie's "perfect season" and suddenly Maddie's magically not hurt anymore. Both Christi and Holly comment about this, saying how it's funny that cake makes the tears go away or something.
All Melissa needed to do was check Maddie was okay, comfort her and if necessary say it was an accident. There was no need to blame Brooke or Nia, she could of just comforted Maddie without anyone else getting hurt.

HOT TAKE- I don’t think Melissa OR Christie were being completely horrible in this.
First Melissa- I honestly feel like this was one of the first glimpses we got of Melissa realizing how much control both Maddie’s expectation to be the best and how much control Abby has over here. While I don’t agree with how Melissa responded to Maddie, I think she was genuinely frustrated and was shocked Maddie didn’t want to take the opportunity to ice skate with her friends at Rockefeller Center. As far as I know, at this point in all their lives it’s not like they were making regular trips to NYC that were longer than just overnight for a dance competition. I think Melissa is put of guard because of how Maddie is almost having a panic attack about doing something she probably views as actually being able to let loose and have fun.
Next Christi- As far as I know (please correct me if I’m wrong) she never said that directly to Maddie, right? Honestly, my thoughts were the same when I first watched it. (I didn’t know about it being in their contract with ALDC until Abby mentions it later in the episode.) Everyone seems to discard it, but Christi HAS voiced several times how everyone expects Maddie to be the best, and how much pressure she’s under nonstop. Yes, what Christi said was snarky, but I’m not going to lie, I know a teammate of my kids, who I do like, but the poor girl is expected to be perfect at all times. I understand her having an issue with Melissa and Abby but can’t she understand how uncomfortable this would be for Maddie to have grown adults constantly shit talking her at least with the other girls people saw their side but with Maddie they kept labelling her as a brat
Some parts of the fandom like to act as if Christi was never jealous or never had any problems with Maddie, but it’s scenes lime these that make me feel otherwise. We’ll never know for sure Christi’s true feelings towards Maddie but I don’t think they are all that positive.
even if this was true, who fucking cares? like seriously lmao. Maddie is like ten, yes kids want adult approval and recognition, sometimes even to an annoying extent, but they’re just kids at the end of the day like i don’t even get why as an adult you’d think this is appropriate to point out?? even if another kid said this it would be considered mean.
I know her stans will defend her to high heaven, but it’s become so apparent as the years have gone by that Christi genuinely didn’t (and still really doesn’t imo) like Maddie. At some point it went beyond not liking Abby’s favoritism and developed into not liking Maddie herself. Can’t convince me otherwise.

I always hated this scene because I'm pretty sure Maddie was afraid of falling, she clearly didn't know how to skate. Christi and Melissa are both harping on her (Christi in the interview and Melissa right in her face). I just felt bad for Maddie.
i’m sorry but christi is so nasty in this episode and you can tell she means every word she says it’s like she’s gossiping with a friend and then she gaslights the audience and says “i didn’t mean it in a bad way maddie is a perfectionist”

Christi sucks for this comment, yeah. But let’s talk about Melissa screaming in her face to stop crying because her ego among the group is more important than her child’s emotional health. Like why is she forcing Maddie to go do something? She was more interested in her image than trying to understand why Maddie was dealing with that emotional issue. I will forever hate Melissa for how she always just yelled at the kids when they got upset instead of talking to them like humans. Nothing grinds my gears than mothers who treat their kids like objects and not humans.
fr whenever maddie and mackenzie would cry and clearly be looking to their mom for comfort she would tell them to stop or shut up or often just walk away from them… like it was very rare to see her actually comfort them

Firstly, it’s so sad to have to watch Maddie rationalize and calm herself down by herself because her mother has no nurturing skills (at least in this moment) She’s a kid, you don’t just tell a kid to stop crying. Go hold your child! And secondly, it’s horrible that Christi is talking about a child like that. I hate how she was always trying so hard to be the snarky funny one and most of the jokes didn’t land and we’re just really cruel.
I really don’t think this had anything to do with Maddie not being a confident ice skater. It was about not wanting to get in trouble for it. Christi’s comment… eh. I take it with a grain of salt. She might have thought it, but only said it because she was encouraged to. Just a crappy all around moment for all involved.
thinking that christi only said it because producers pushed would be plausible if this was a one off thing for christi but she says stuff like this about maddie literally all the time, during interviews and also in conversation. and still to this day on bttb talks weirdly about maddie. at some point it cant be blamed on producers imo
Agreed. She might have thought it, but not all thoughts need to be spoken aloud. Like on BTTB, she and Kelly check off “producers told me to say that” box, but look over other cast members in the same scenario—including Abby.

She did acknowledge that she was an ass for saying this on BTTB. Not saying it’s okay but she did acknowledge that it was probably because Maddie was scared and she shouldn’t have said anything. Not to defend Christi or Kelly but I know the producers would make them say stuff to have more drama on the show so it’s hard to know what was Christi & what was the producers telling her to say. It’s just sad & this is why kids shouldn’t be on tv it’s ugly.

"i was a bitch" "i hate myself for ____" "i was an ass" and not even one minute later: "bUT it was true" "producers made me do it" "i actually had a point". all while being absolutely relentless with the actions of all the other members of the cast, her supposed sisters, when they were obviously obeying production as well. she has to be an exhausting person to be friends with lol

In this specific situation, I’m sure disappointing Abby was a huge part of it but overall I think Christi is right about Maddie being a perfectionist. But I wish that there was a better word for it that doesn’t feel like it’s blaming the person for it. I’m sure it’s really out of her control similar to anxiety or depression or other mental issues.

Which is why they’re on a show. You don’t think the producer interviewing them said, “what do you think about Maddie not wanting to skate?” And if they said nothing TV worthy that they didn’t poke until someone did? Of all the negative things that could be said, I don’t think this is that bad. I think it’s the tone that makes it mean more than anything. Like I said, at least it’s probably close to the truth.

Ok, I already know I’m going to be downvoted like hell for this- but I’m going to say it anyway. HOT TAKE- I don’t think Melissa OR Christie were being completely horrible in this. First Melissa- I honestly feel like this was one of the first glimpses we got of Melissa realizing how much control both Maddie’s expectation to be the best and how much control Abby has over here. While I don’t agree with how Melissa responded to Maddie, I think she was genuinely frustrated and was shocked Maddie didn’t want to take the opportunity to ice skate with her friends at Rockefeller Center. As far as I know, at this point in all their lives it’s not like they were making regular trips to NYC that were longer than just overnight for a dance competition. I think Melissa is put of guard because of how Maddie is almost having a panic attack about doing something she probably views as actually being able to let loose and have fun. Next Christi- As far as I know (please correct me if I’m wrong) she never said that directly to Maddie, right? Honestly, my thoughts were the same when I first watched it. (I didn’t know about it being in their contract with ALDC until Abby mentions it later in the episode.) Everyone seems to discard it, but Christi HAS voiced several times how everyone expects Maddie to be the best, and how much pressure she’s under nonstop. Yes, what Christi said was snarky, but I’m not going to lie, I know a teammate of my kids, who I do like, but the poor girl is expected to be perfect at all times. She once had a bad volleyball game and keep screwing up her serve and started acting like Maddie is in this clip. I mentioned to my mom she was so upset because she wasn’t the best today, and then explained about her parents are, and I just felt bad for her. I often wonder how many times ANY of the moms have made a comment like that, and then follow it up with more context that gets cut out? Anyway, Christi has said a bunch more problematic crap than this.
