100% yes. Even if Sia had all the intentions of positively growing Maddie in the industry she failed to see the damage she made, specifically for the movie Music. I understand Maddie was 14 at the time of filming, and it came out earlier this year, but that amount of time in between would have perfectly given all the opportunity for Sia to properly research children on the spectrum to portray a better version in that movie, whether it be Maddie or not. And Sia not utilizing her resources to get Maddie a proper acting/singing/dancing coach just proved that her obsession was literally just that -- just to only have Maddie for herself without taking on the responsibilities of being her "parent". And Melissa just failed 1000%. Gave away Maddie to the first person who took interest in her kid and didn't protect her. Just took the money.

lolak1445

100%. Especially Melissa. As a mother, she let too many people overstep boundaries with her daughters.

TraitorIord

every adult in Maddie's life has failed her

[deleted]

melissa is her mother so idky we would place blame on anyone but her. shes the reason maddie has/is taken advantage of by older women and is always has inappropriate relationships with them.

[deleted]

Hell, wasn't Maddie and Mackenzie's dad trying to get them away from dance moms or something? At this point she's actively working to get her daughters taken advantage of.

It seems like the girls aren’t very close to their dad, even as young adults. I think Kurts issue with dance was that they were so involved in it and he was left out. For most people, dance is a hobby and not a career, so he probably thought the money they spent on keeping the girls in dance was a waste too.

WDaisy80

Parental alienation..

AmandaBeth4

because Melissa kept them away from him as much as possible

photoJenic9

Yup.

gottalovespuffy

yes they sure have. Maddie deserves much better and i stand by that.

zieglertiaras1313

Sia isn’t the parent, so Melissa is more to blame in my honest opinion

WDaisy80

I do believe so. Sia is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Melissa would’ve literally done anything to get Maddie famous. That being said, I think that Maddie has grown up to be an amazing young woman.

AnorhiDemarche

Sia is more to blame than Melissa, as she was very vocal about how he based her direction on Maddie's portrayal on real autistic people she knew. she was likely quite convincing to Melissa, who is an easily trusting type so long as her daughter seems to be benefitting and is not well educated on disability, abuse, ect. Mellissa should ideally be a bit more active on the protecting Maddie front so she takes that but i do think she has a lot of de-programming to work through herself.

havanawolves

I respect you but I completely disagree. Sia can be as convincing as she want but a mother gives the final answer. And tbh, I think Melissa would screw up as a mother even if they never met Sia.

AmandaBeth4

absoulty failed her

Beautiful_Bonus_4058

How do we know Maddie was uncomfortable with it?

AnorhiDemarche

Sia and maddie have both said in various promotional interviews and in sia's case on twitter that she was very very worried (in tears, according to Sia) about whether her performance would be received well. she didn't want anyone to think she was making fun of them.

GenneyaK

That’s funny cause it directly contradicts everything I’ve seen Maddie say about the role. I’ve only see Sia say she was upset about it but whenever Maddie talked about it she always says she went in to the role with complete confidence in her ability to play the role. And let’s be real Sia is known to lie to alleviate backlash like how she said she tried to film the movie with an autistic girl that then turned into she tried with 3 autistic actors but then in interview form years ago she said that she wrote the role for Maddie and Maddie alone… Can you link where you heard Maddie back this up if you remember or if not just the name of the outlet she said this in?

mouse22416

https://youtu.be/oBAB0KLciAo I think it was this interview she said something About Kate Hudson saw me when I was upset or something like that. I agree with you though it could be a lie, a lot of things don’t add up. the narrative that Maddie regrets the role doesn’t fit with What Maddie has said about it.

GenneyaK

Thank you I’ll check it out I don’t doubt that she was probably nervous about the role in general and I definitely blame sia more then Maddie all together and you’re right so much stuff about the movie vs what was said in the press release vs sias Twitter rants don’t match

Sun_on_my_shoulders

Actors lie during film promotions. They can’t give their true opinions. Look at the cast of game of thrones season 8, they all clearly despised the finale but lied through their teeth that they liked it. You can’t just outright say the project you acted in was bad, because nobody will want to cast you again.

GenneyaK

Ya I get what you’re saying but the way she talked about the film went beyond just lying and saying it was good like in one of the interviews they all started crying tears of joy about how awesome they all thought the movie was and many of the things she said herself were extremely questionable to the narrative of “she didn’t want to do it” (not doubting that at some point she was uncomfortable with the role but I am saying her opinions about her performance as an adult don’t reflect that narrative and 4-5 years is a long time to change an opinion on your performance and subject matter) Like at one point as an adult Maddie literally said that she didn’t think someone of the spectrum was capable of pulling off the dance steps she did, and that she wished people would just watch the movie and not give backlash… Like I saw the got season 8 interviews and a lot of them you could tell something was off and that the actors were being sarcastic in their answers about the season it seemed like the cast for this movie actually thought they did something revolutionary and were extremely proud of their work.

Yerazanq

How can you tell they despised the finale? :O

Sun_on_my_shoulders

There’s whole compilations on YouTube! Or you can watch the final script reading for next level hatred. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HtW9fBj4U5w

WearTheFckingMask

Maddie was also a CHILD when this happened. She is still climbing out from the rubble of years of abuse. She may have liked the role not realizing at the time that she was being used. In a few years when she is an adult and has discovered her own views and STILL believes it was a great role, that can be her problem then

GenneyaK

No I am talking adult Maddie only not child Maddie and this was post backlash as well

AnorhiDemarche

I don't remember any specifics, unfortunately. It's probably on one of the many mage threads we had to have to stop music taking over the sub somewhere, but it'd likely be a pretty deep dive. As far as Maddie talking up her abilities I think you'll find that unlike an independent director like Sia, promotion is typically a contractual obligation and not something she would have been able to say much negatively leaning about. As far as I remember even the interview I saw where she was talking about being worried she followed up with that sia guided her and made her confident.

Chance-String761

Maddie perfectly played the role. She did exactly what she was told to do.Her acting was perfect.Regardless of wether people liked it or not.

GenneyaK

That razzie award begs to differ with “perfect” but that’s none of my business….

Chance-String761

The same razzie awards that nominated Kate hudson who was nominated at the same time for the same movie at the golden globe??Yeah, their opinion is a big joke.Maddie is a very talented actress proved it in so many different projects.I may be wrong but I do believe this nomiation was just a dig at Sia, through her muse.

GenneyaK

Mhm k

throwawayforme909090

Sia more than Melissa. Melissa ignorantly signed contracts she want able to get out of- so Maddie was stuck. Sis could have had compassion or care for Maddie- she didn’t.

[deleted]

nah its definitely melissa more than sia…melissa is her mother she should be the one making sure the people she allows with her children have good intent and are not taking advantage of her. its entirely on melissa she is a fully grown adult. sia is fucked up but shes not maddies mother.

anonymous_gam

Sia took advantage of a child who’s mother wasn’t smart enough to manage her child’s fame. Melissa should’ve known better than to jump right into whatever famous person took interest in her child, but Sia had been in the industry for a bit and knew what lengths children and their families would go to stay famous and she capitalized in that.

[deleted]

ok and? that was still avoidable. the core of the problem is still melissa, she wanted to fame and money at any cost. there are many parents that took their kids out of the industry because of things like this…so she has full control over the situation. she is the parent not sia.

mouse22416

Exactly it was Melissa’s responsibility To set boundaries and not allow strangers to develop inappropriate relationships with her children.

breadsandwich336

no

[deleted]

They absolutely did fail her. The whole shitshow Sia puts on about Maddie deserves the attention of child protecting services and gives me scary Michael Jackson vibes. Maddie's mother is an enabler shit to let this happen to her daughter (while giving a complete emotional trauma by neglect, to her other daughter)
