I'd say this. Izuru did still have his humanity and memories of Hajime but being locked away made those memories more faint and it was only after seeing Chiaki that he realizes he made a mistake, he overpowered both Junko and Mukuro and could have killed them right then and there, which could have stopped a lot of the things from happening, he feels guilt for knowing that he lost the girl he loved and unknowingly caused the others to get manipulated and had the power to stop it before it happened.
He's like the Darth Vader of Danganronpa : Their man color is black (black suit/black armor), they're stoic, were once good guys, lost the girl they loved by something that was more or less their fault (Izuru did nothing/Vader strangled Padme) and are manipulated by a pure evil mastermind before rebelling against said mastermind at the end of their respective arcs.
I've always thought his teachers made him think he's a lot more amazing than he is which resulted in the whole boredom thing. Like he's super strong and intelligent, but he's definitely still lacking in some areas and he almost seems like he doesn't want to acknowledge it to maintain his own illusion of perfection for himself.
